A/N: I wrote this last night as I was watching my Lost DVDs (actually, after I finished watching them) and I noticed something—well, odd. In "Whatever the Case May Be," Jack and Kate have a little falling out thing, after she first swipes the key from the dead marshal, then after he asks her about the plane, he yells, she cries. BUT! In the next episode, Hearts and Minds, he comes spying on her in the garden, and they have the guava seeds moment. No tension between them over what had happened the day (?) before. I always thought that was weird, so I wrote this little oneshot to try and bridge the gap. It's so short it's not even funny, but it helps a little. ONESHOT. R&R!

He couldn't sleep. Her face kept coming into his mind. The way she had looked at him when he took the key from her, guilty. The way she had gone almost limp when he'd grabbed her, how when that final confession had come out of her mouth, she had broken down before his eyes. He had never seen that kind of pain on anyone's face before, and plenty of people had suffered and died in his presence.

The others around him slept, but he found that he couldn't. The sun wasn't up yet, but it was early. Jack got up and lit one of the torches, and took the trail to the beach. The others were camped further down, and he would be alone to collect his thoughts. By the time he got there, the sun was peeking over the water. Jack extinguished the torch in the ocean and looked up at the sky, holding his breath. It was beautiful. The meeting of sky and sea, a burst of reds, oranges, yellows and purples, mixed with white clouds and the blue ocean. He wished he had a camera.

When the sun finally rose over the ocean, and the sky began to tint with blue, he turned, wondering what to do next. He thought of checking to see how Rose was doing, but stopped short. She was there, waiting a few yards up, he didn't know how long or when she had come. Her face was unreadable. He turned, almost ashamed to look at her, after what he had done to her. She was frozen where she stood, looking down. As he passed her, something made him say, "I'm sorry."

She didn't have to ask what he meant. "I know you are. And you don't have to apologize. It's as much my fault as it is yours."

"It just felt better to apologize. So, we're cool?"

She nodded. "Yeah, Jack. We're cool."

He stood for a moment, looking at her and she at him. In this morning light, she was even more beautiful, her features softer. He had an urgent desire to kiss her, just once, quickly, just to see what it was like, but he held himself back. A simple apology was all. Neither of them needed any outpouring of emotion because he'd apologized and she'd understood. But he had to get out of there quickly, because he was going to do something stupid if he wasn't careful.

"I'll see you later, okay?"

She nodded and smiled, and his body did funny things. He started back toward the caves, then stopped, turning back to look at her.

"Did you watch the sunrise?"

"Yeah, I get up early every morning to watch it. My dad and I used to do that all the time."

"Maybe tomorrow I can come down and we can watch it together."

Her cheeks were a little pink and she glanced at the ground for a moment, then looked back up at him with that shy little smile he loved so much already.

"I'd like that,"

"Great. Well, I gotta get going so I'll–."

"See you later, Jack."
