Kelly was pacing the waiting room of Chicago med when Gabby and Casey came running in. "Severide." They approached him and Casey immediately embraced him in a hug. "What happened?"

"I don't know. I found her on the floor completely unresponsive. She had a pulse when we pulled into med." Kelly was visibly shaking.

"Has anyone come talk to you guys?"

"No. Halstead rushed us out of her room when she was rolled in." Kelly tried to choke back his sobs. "I can't lose her Matt. She means everything to me."

"I know Kelly." Casey held Severide close as he cried. Kelly wasn't one to cry. The only times really anyone seen him cry was when they lost Andy and Shay.

Within the hour most of 51 had arrived to sit in the waiting room with Kelly and Hermann.

It had been several hours since Alex was wheeled into Chicago med and no one could give them any answers. Dr. Choi and Dr. Manning had to both talk Kelly down and keep him in the waiting room.

All they knew was she wasn't doing good and that Rhodes and Halstead were in the OR trying to save her. But no one wanted to tell Kelly as they knew what would happen.

The sliding doors of the ED came whooshing open and out walked an exhausted Dr. Rhodes and Dr. Halstead. "Severide. Hermann."

Both men jumped to their feet and met the doctors halfway into the middle of the waiting room. Kelly was fuming since no one would tell him what was going on or if Alex was going to be okay.

"Alexandra is a fighter." Dr. Rhodes began. "she will have a long road to recovery if she wakes up."

Hermann shifted uncomfortably. "What do you mean IF?"

"Alexandra took several hard blows to her head which caused some swelling and bleeding. Neurology believe they got it under control but they are monitoring her very close."

"She also has a dislocated shoulder and several cracked ribs which all will heal in time. Dr. Charles is concerned with her mental state after suffering an attack of this degree. But he can help her with that so hopefully she won't have to be committed again."

Both Hermann and Severide were caught off guard. Both of their necks snapped up to look at Rhodes and Halstead. They never knew Alex had had mental health problems in the past. "What do you mean again?"

Both Dr. Rhodes and Dr. Halstead exchanged a look with one another. "We thought you knew."

"Clearly not Connor." Kelly spat back at him. "When was this?"

"According to her chart it was for 8 months between 2014-2015."

Suddenly it clicked it Hermann's mind. That's why she didn't come to Shay's funeral or why he didn't hear from her for months afterwards. "Did she check herself in?"

Dr. Rhodes began scrolling through her chart on his table till he found the form he was looking for. "No her husband Mason checked her in. Apparently she suffered a manic depressive episode and threw herself down some stairs."

"Bullshit."

"Severide..."

"No Hermann! You know damn well Lex didn't do that. And I bet if we look at the dates it was right around when Shay died!Mason didn't want her coming back to Chicago because he knew she would stay!"

Hermann knew how Kelly was feeling. He was always Alex's protector and to find this out was breaking him. Imagining the pain she went through and he wasn't there to help.

"I hear you Kelly but right now let's just focus on Alex. Mason can be dealt with later." Hermann recognized the look in Severide's eyes. It was the same look when Katie had been taken. The last thing anyone needed was Severide diving off the deep end and going after Mason.

"She needs to rest but you guys can all step in to see her for a few minutes." Hermann nodded and the doctors headed back into the ED. The firefighters of 51 all then headed up to see Alex.

The nurses had been warned about the group of firefighters headed up to see Alexandra and were advised to allow them enter. Hospital policy usually only allowed 2 visitors at a time but exceptions were always made for the those in uniform.

Hermann and Severide were the first to enter Alex's room. They took in her state and could see the bruises forming on her face. Her head was wrapped in a white bandage and a tube was helping her breath.

The two men sat on either side of Alex and held one of her hands. The rest of 51 filed into the room and stood at the foot of her bed. No one had ever seen Mouch cry but even he had a few tears sliding down his cheeks.

Everyone was silent as the beeps from the machines around Alex's bed filled the empty space.

Kelly and Hermann had stayed by Alex's bedside all night watching for any sign that she might be waking up. Kelly was starting to nod off when there was a knock at the hospital room door.

The door came open and in walked Burges and Ruzek. "No change?" Kelly shook his head no as the two police officers walked closer to Alex's hospital bed.

"Did you guys find anything?" Intelligence had stopped by when they had first arrived at the hospital to gather any information Hermann or Kelly had.

The two officers exchanged a look to see who was going to deliver the bad news. So Ruzek took in a deep breath. "We ran down Mason and there's logs of him being on shift durning the time of the attack."

Kelly jumped to his feet a fast that Hermann feared he may have to hold Severide back. "That's bullshit!" Kelly was furious because he was realizing Mason was going to get away with this.

"Kelly do you know who her husband is?"

"He's a cop that's all I know."

"He's a sargent one of the youngest ones Raleigh PD has ever had. His dad is the freaking police commissioner."

"Unbelievable so he's just going to get away with this?"

"Not on my watch." Everyone's eyes looked back at the rough voice that was standing by the doorway. "We just need to find the proof that he was here in Chicago and not back in North Carolina but it'll take time."

"What are we supposed to do till then Voight? Sit by and let that jackass walk free?"

"That's exactly what I need you to do Severide. I need you to be by Alex's side till we catch this monster. I don't want you going all lone ranger and confronting this guy."

"But..."

"No Severide. If we want this guy we have to play by the book. He's a cop and his dad is commissioner. They know all the games and how to make a false trail. So you sit tight and let us handle this. Do you understand?"

Kelly reluctantly nodded his head yes.

"Good. Now someone call us the second she wakes up. Her statement can be the difference in this guy walking free or dying behind bars."

Kelly nodded. Hank, Burgess, and Ruzek left Alex's room closing the door behind them. Kelly sat back down and turned his attention back to Alex and continued to watch her sleep.
