Another Shorter chapter ahead.
I wanted to post one more chapter before this one, but honestly it wouldn't add anything to the story and I wanted to hurry up and get into the meat of it. So here we are: The Entrance Exams!
Also! Something to clarify from last chapter:
Initially the start date for the U.A hero exams was supposed to be August. I eventually changed the date to November because... I don't know. So where it says "2 months" in a dialogue with Aizawa, it's supposed to say "5 Months". I would fix it, but I lost the file.
That is all (aside from some general typos and errors). I apologize you must suffer my incompetence.
Now time to play the game "Can you spot the cameo/reference"
[Okay. After releasing this I realized that I should not have as there were a lot of consistency issues with this chapter. I've also done my best to go over as many typos as possible. Hopefully I won't have to do it again.]
Yoruichi sat on a train bench right beside Mina Ashido. When the pinkette learned that Yoruichi had eventually applied to U.A she practically jumped in elation over the phone. She kept going on and on about how they should show up together, and how much fun it would be see Yoruichi's quirk in action. This was at least a months after Yoruichi had applied.
She found it safe to say that Mina had grown attached to her, and Yoruichi reciprocated just enough to share Mina's opinions.
It was now the day of the entrance exams. The two rode next to each other, chatting quietly as to not disturb the other passengers. Yoruichi sat in a more relaxed posture, her eyes looking towards Mina but her face towards the roof of the train-cart. Ashido, meanwhile, was leaning into the Shinigami with just enough space for her friend.
Yoruichi was curious to see how Ashido's quirk worked. She did ask the girl, and Mina answered in kind. Apparently she could control the level of solubility and viscosity of her acid, but when asked if she could control the acidity of it, Mina told Yoruichi that she could not. It was strange that she couldn't when it would seem natural that she could. Yoruichi did say to Mina that maybe in the future she would be able to.
The train had begun to slow down and a few passengers stood from their seats to walk towards the door. Mina and Yoruichi stood as well, and ended up filing out with the rest of the crowd.
U.A was only just a few meters down the road. The exam orientation wouldn't begin for another thirty minutes and it would take them less than twenty to arrive.
"Do you know what this year's exams will be like?" Yoruichi asked Mina as they began their walk to the school.
"It's different every year," Mina answered. "I think last year they had sidekicks from a bunch of different agencies play the villains and the students had a time limit to make a capture."
"Sounds easy," Yoruichi commented, resting her hands in her jacket's pockets while trodding along with Mina.
"For you maybe," Ashido returned with a comment of her own. "You're like, really fast! You're sure you don't have a teleport quirk?"
"Positive," Yoruichi answered.
The school's tip had made itself a shadow in the horizon as it came into view. If either of the girls could gauge the distance they could assume it to be another five or so minutes away.
Several cars made their way through, all likely headed for the school just ahead. If the reports she read were right, every year, around when the U.A entrance exams begin, traffic gets backed up for miles on end. Busses and trucks get delayed, and some businesses allow their employees to stay home because they likely won't show up for work until it's halfway done because of the traffic, taking return traffic into consideration.
Trains were always a solution for it, so most people would wind up at work anyway regardless of the optional time off. Most of the people on the train they took looked like they were going into work, probably some eight-to-five job that made them rip their hair out. Then again, students would also take the train to avoid traffic, therefore taking up space on the train that a lot of employees needed.
U.A finally came into full view, no longer a shadow on the morning horizon but only another street down.
Ashido and Shihouin joined group of students who were ready to cross the road onto the school's grounds. When the crossing guard saw the group increase by another two students he held the cars incoming from their side of the road to let the students cross.
A chilly, late autumn breeze came down through walkway to the front doors of the building. It was gentle, but the chill made Yoruichi shiver just a bit and sent Ashido into an almost frozen paralysis. Another girl just to their left, with large eyes and swampy green hair almost looked like she was about to fall asleep from the cold.
"Deku!" An angry voice shouted from behind them.
They turned their heads to the source, looking at angry blonde who was approaching another green haired child. Yoruichi remembered the boy. Midoriya Izuku was his name.
"That's an interesting nickname," Yoruichi commented.
"What's so interesting about it?" Ashido inquired.
Both girls faced back to the entrance as the blonde became verbally aggressive with the other boy.
"I've met the kid before. Green hair, not the asshole." Mina looked at her and nodded in response. "His name's Izuku Midoriya. Depending on how you pronounce the characters of his first name it can have a few different meanings. 'Deku' is one of the pronunciations."
"But Deku doesn't have any meaning to it."
"I know. That's why it's interesting. Why give a kid a nickname that isn't a word?"
Mina shrugged. "I can't say."
Leaving behind the two boys, Mina and Yoruichi once again walked towards the doors of the school. On entry, the two were greeted by a sign that pointed them to the left, in large bold letters stating 'ENTRANCE EXAM'. They could see just down the hall where they needed to go, and proceeded as needed.
Yoruichi had been seated for ten minutes in the auditorium. As more and more students piled in she felt the time go by.
Soon, the lights in the room dimmed and eventually shut off. A handful of lights shone down on center stage, showing a podium where one man took stage. He was a skinny man of average height with electric yellow hair that was slicked backwards and up. He wore sunglasses with triangular rims, and had a wide pointed smile.
"That's Present Mic! The voice hero!" She heard Izuku exclaim in the best whisper he could with how much excitement was coming from the boy's body.
"IS EVERYBODY REEAADAAAAYY!"
Dead silence.
"CAN I GET A 'HEY'!?"
Still silence.
"Tough crowd," he noted in a normal tone of voice.
He began to walk towards the podium. A small chorus of hushed sighs and relieved breaths surrounded Yoruichi. Present Mic then pressed a button on the podium, turning on a screen behind him which displayed the schools logo: two large letters 'U' and 'A', both large and red with a white border, with the 'A' comfortably sat inside the 'U'.
"Alright, alright, alright," he repeated in a nonchalant manner. "No doubt you've already taken the written exam, or you wouldn't be here. Now let's move on and get to what you all came here for!" His voice may not have been as booming loud as it was before, but he still paused in wait for a cheer or some other kind of celebration. Again, he was met with dead silence.
"Well then," he continued. "Let's jump right into it. Immediately after the presentation you'll all be headed to the specified battle center labeled on the card you got, okay?" A new image popped up showing right separate boxes lettered 'A' to 'G' all connected to a larger box via lines.
Yoruichi and Ashido looked down at their cards. They had sat next, Mina left side of Yoruichi. After they analyzed their own cards, the looked at each other's.
While Yoruichi had gotten Battle Center A, Ashido had gotten Battle Center E. 'So you can't work with your friends.'
"For years practical exam, we're having you all partake in ten minute urban mock battles combating faux villains, in which you will be using your quirks to immobilize them." Mic pressed a button on his podium, sliding to the next image of three different robotic shadows, each with the numbers '1', '2' and '3' labeled onto them. "These villains will be scattered across the battle center, and points will be earned based on the level of difficulty. Keep in mind, attacking other examiners and any other unheroic acts will be grounds for disqualification!"
'Sounds easy,' Yoruichi thought to herself.
Any speech from the teacher was interrupted by the boy to her right raising his hand. She couldn't imagine why anyone would have questions about the point system.
A spotlight shone on the boy next to her, the bright light temporarily blinding Yoruichi until she adjusted to it. Present Mic pointed a finger at the boy, letting him know he could speak.
"I have a question!" He shouted. The kid's posture was straight and proper like he were a member of the Kuchiki clan.
"Okay!" Present Mic shouted in poor English.
He pointed to a printout sheet, showing four Faux Villains instead of three. On the sheet she saw the fourth one was worth zero points.
The student began again. "On the printout sheet there are four types of villains shown. If this is a misprint, then U.A, the most prominent school in Japan, should be ashamed to have made such a mistake!" He paused for a brief second to hold a closed fist over his heart. "Every student in this room is here because we wish to be molded into exemplary heroes..."
'Relax,' Yoruichi thought, giving a surprised huff at the boy. 'I doubt he forgot.'
Turning around, he then pointed his finger at Izuku. Yoruichi sighed. The kid couldn't get a break today. First the blonde haired kid with the explosive personality, now he has to deal with another good ball obsessed with being proper. This kid would be a better comparison to Soi-Fōn than Aizawa.
"Additionally, you with the curly hair. You've been muttering this whole time. It's distracting! If you aren't here to take this exam seriously then you should leave!"
Yoruichi saw Izuku cover his own mouth apologetically. All eyes were on him now when originally none were. Yoruichi didn't even hear him. It's either a testament to the fact the kid next to her has exceptional hearing or hers is going bad.
"Calm down Examinee Number 7111. We were getting to that."
The next panel showed up on the screen, displaying the zero pointer.
"The fourth type of villain is worth zero points. That guys an obstacle, so to speak. There's one in every battle center. An obstacle that will go crazy in narrow spaces. It's not impossible to defeat, but there's no reason to defeat it, either. I can only advise you all try to steer clear of it."
Yoruichi had a few questions herself about this zero pointer. Why avoid an obstacle and not get rid of it? If it would only impede them would it not be wiser to eliminate it?
Yoruichi raised her hand this time, ready to repeat her thought. A light shone down on her, nearly blinding the girl.
"Examinee Number 7112! Question?"
"Wouldn't it normally be better to eliminate any obstacles?" She asked. "If it's only going to get in our way of getting points then why ignore it when it would be smarter to eliminate it as fast as possible? Is there some kind of catch?"
Present Mic grinned maniacally. He started to snicker to himself before answering Shihouin's question. "Great question! Unfortunately, I can't tell you. Sorry to disappoint!"
The light disappeared off of Yoruichi, shining back onto the presentor. There were some silent murmurs in the crowd, most comparing the zero pointer to be akin to an obstacle in a video game.
Yoruichi had played a game only twice, both times with Mina. Neither time had an obstacle in it as they were older racing games. The closest thing they had to obstacles were items used by other players to impede the process of others. Something told her that the zero pointer was easily compared to something like those.
"That's all from me, listeners! Now before you all make your way to the locker rooms to get changed, let me give you a message from our school to your ears: Plus Ultra!"
Yoruichi had wore her chosen suit to the exams under her clothes. She saw it best for a quick change instead of a lengthy one. Also she'd have to get naked to put it on and didn't feel like disturbing any potential future class mates... yet.
Shihouin had chosen to wear a black, leather body suit similar in structure to a leotard. On her arms were two wool-made sleeves disconnected from the rest of the suit. Her shoes were flat-footed and heel length in height. It reminded her a lot of her old suit she wore when fighting Aizen.
Due to her being quicker in getting herself ready, she was one of the first people to arrive at the testing grounds.
One by one more students piled into the front area of the testing grounds. To her surprise Midoriya's tormentor was there. She was inclined to ask him what his deal with the kid was, but it wasn't her business anyways. Not that she cared either. For that she held her tongue.
Eventually, when the last person had showed, the metal gates had begun to open at a slowed pace.
Students rushed in, each one piling over the other to be the first one in. The blonde haired kid she spotted was in the front of the crowd, but he wasn't the first in the grounds.
Yoruichi had used her Shunpō to be the first one in, immediately crushing a two-pointer with a single punch and then using Shunpō again to immediately disable a three-pointer with a swift and heavy kick. She was in first place with five points right off the bat.
Other kids had rushed to get to other faux-villains as well, getting individual points as they went on. Meanwhile, Yoruichi was increasing her own score: five to six, six to nine, nine to eleven. There wasn't anything to keep track for her so she had to keep track herself.
Yoruichi saw the angry blonde rush in for a few faux-villains, hoping to reach them in in time. It was a two pointer, which had also targeted him as he targeted it. Within a matter of seconds the two stood face to face, and the blonde had extended out his arm.
Yoruichi smiled a mischievous grin. He was right in her line of sight. Using Shunpō again, she appeared right in front of the boy, taking the two-pointer he had lined up in front of him by the tail and throwing it over her shoulder. It flew across the street and hit a one-pointer directly, having her count another three points to her total.
"That was mine!" He yelled.
"Should've been faster," she returned with a wry smile. She used her Shunpō to disappear again, going elsewhere to score more points for herself. This time, she wouldn't steal someone else's points.
"Does that count as villainous behavior?" An odd looking man in a trench coat asked his colleagues, watching the girl on the screen take away points from another examinee.
"It was never explicitly or implicitly stated in the rules that what she did wasn't specifically allowed," an animalistic staff member answered in kind. "And whether or not it's villainous behavior, I would say no."
"Just immature," Aizawa added.
"They're only children Aizawa-san," the mouse-like creature commented. "Immaturity is expected among them."
Aizawa grumbled to himself and continued to watch the various screens in front of him and the other teachers. It wasn't even day one and Yoruichi was already making enemies.
"Thirty-five points," Yoruichi said to herself, recounting her eliminations over the past four minutes.
She had no doubt that the blonde kid was somewhere behind her, maybe closely trailing her. Of course she could easily elongate that gap between them, but that wouldn't be as fun.
There was something that caught her eye upon shifting her vision to the a left hand street. It was an examinee trapped under rubble in an empty street aside from a faux-villain. He was seemingly uninjured but only able to move a single arm the other was trapped. It was a three-pointer that was walking towards the kid at a steady pace. If internal injuries didn't kill the kid, the three-pointer will.
"Why the hell not," she said, shrugging and taking the free points for herself.
Yoruichi Shunpō'd in and struck the robot with a heavy blow. It was stopped immediately and sent flying back into a light pole, its chassis completely dented and crushed inward.
"You okay?" She asked calmly, counting her score up by another three. She had no idea by how many points she lead by, but felt as if she could afford to help the kid. Yoruichi had kicked a slab of concrete off the boy's chest and onto the ground.
"Y-yeah," the boy answered. "Thanks for that."
After she had helped the kid to his feet, she left him behind to immediately get back in the game.
Yoruichi would admit this to anyone: she was having fun. She could now fully understand why the members of Squad 11 loved battle so much – at least she thinks so. This was nothing more than mindless catharsis, and holding back her strength made it more fun than normal.
Even when restraining herself she wouldn't be a match for any of the examinee's there. It almost made her feel bad when also considering the centuries of experience she had under her belt. But destroying things was too much fun for her to consider it fully.
As she kicked a one-pointer quickly and hard, it flew across the street and barreled into two two-pointers. She added the five points individually, counting her score go up by one and then two and two again. Forty-two points.
Again using her Shunpō, in rapid succession she had destroyed three individual robots that were almost being engaged by other students. One, two, one, in that order. Then after, she would attack more faux-villains forcing her to count up even more.
Forty-seven.
Forty-nine.
Fifty-one.
Fifty-four.
She had moved to a roof to gain a vantage point. Carefully she scanned the lower streets, happy to see a handful of robots all by themselves. She smiled, happy to know that no one would be in her general radius.
It was speed.
At first Bakugo thought it was teleportation given how fast she could appear and disappear, but teleportation doesn't carry momentum.
Whoever that girl was, she was incredibly fast. Bakugo deduced that by using the speed she built up in such a short timeframe, the momentum being carried was used to reinforce the strength of her hits. But had to be some kind of limit, some kind of drawback. Maybe vertigo? Or whiplash?
He didn't know. He didn't care either. Bakugo was just... angry. He shouted in a fury, placed on top of a three-pointer and sent a massive explosion downward into the robot.
Fifty-four points, he counted. He finished up his robot and looked up at the street hoping to find some more.
Bakugo was seething. Not ever had he come in second place. He was always best. Best at everything. Then some random girl shows up, steals his points while also using what was supposed to be his points to make her own increase.
He's supposed to be on top. He is supposed to be number one.
Bakugo didn't have time to lure in another robot. He extended his arm, reinforcing it with the other, to fire off a single long range explosion that knocked a one-pointer into another. The strength of his explosion singed the hair on his arm. That's why he lured them in. He would use the multiple weaker explosions on a faux-villains top to destroy to reduce the strain of his quirk on his body. But this... it hurt.
He was on the move again, taking out a one-pointer robot to total out to fifty-six. Despite her earlier interference, it wouldn't stop him from coming out on top. He could only hope that she'd pass so he could run his victory in her face, to show that no matter what she did he would still be the best.
Suddenly, his heart skipped a beat.
It was just a few streets down. It had felt as if the air had gotten heavier, the pressure threatening to crush anything that would dare get near it. Bakugo could almost see where the air gained weight, a visible cloud of pressure just a few yards to his left.
Then it stopped. The whole street had stopped. It was almost like standing before death.
"Three minutes left on the clock," the animal teacher commented, looking at a timer on the top left of the screen. "Cementos-san?" He said, looking to his colleague.
Cementos, in turn, looked towards the other teachers. "Yagi-san? Ectoplasm-san?" They shrugged and nodded. When he turned to Aizawa, he waved to him in a way he interpreted as approval.
Present Mic grew a manic grin, flicking open the lid for far left button on the dashboard before being stopped by one of the other staff members. His smile dropped for a second, not a frown, but a bit confused.
"I suppose we could," a female teacher in a tight, white bodysuit agreed. "Anyone else?"
"May as well. Things are getting pretty boring."
All heads nodded in agreement. Present mic seemed exited at the premise of being able to release the monster of a robot.
He pressed down on the button and a small notification on the television screen displayed that he had deployed the zero-pointer. he voice hero kicked back to watch the carnage ensue.
Who'd be willing to fight these monsters?
Her score was now seventy-one. She smiled, knowing full well the points gained in the Reiatsu crush must have put far ahead off the blonde.
She stood atop a utility post, looking down at a lone two-point robot. Anyone who was honing in on the thing didn't have time to blink as she crushed it beneath her feet, cracking the road beneath it as well.
She huffed slightly.
Yoruichi eyed the rest of the examinee's in the street. Only three had targeted the two-pointer, and the others had been focusing on others. Yoruichi cursed at herself when she saw a three pointer being ripped apart by a girl with vine-like hair.
"Can't believe I missed that," she sighed, immediately getting over it within a few seconds.
She went to move elsewhere again, but the earth started to shake. Everyone on the street stopped, even the blonde-haired boy who had just finished off another robot.
This street was clear, so there was no need to linger. But something kept them from moving. The rumble became more intense and violent as the seconds went by.
"I-is it an earth quake?" She heard one examinee inquire, unable to keep even footing on the ground.
Some examinee's fled before it arrived, thinking it to be little more than a tremor. But those that stayed go to see it in all its glory. The zero-pointer.
It was then Yoruichi got to see the catch about the obstacle. This thing was massive. It easily towered over the tallest buildings on the street by twice their height.
Almost everyone began running, including Yoruichi who simply refused to fight something that wouldn't contribute to her score. The ones who stood in place out of pure fear were either left behind or dragged along by others. Two of the students that were left behind appeared on the rooftops beside the Shinigami, no longer in the way of the zero-pointer, but instead five streets down.
She had better get points for this. Still, she refused to let them die because they were too scared to move.
"Sorry about this, but there's probably a way down." She pointed to a doorway that led to the inside of the building from the roof. "Right there. Bye!"
Back in the street she immediately started off by ripping the dome off a three-pointer and throwing it into the ground. It was still moving but the circuits were exposed, allowing Yoruichi to rip out the wires and stop it from moving.
Two more faux-villains tried to pinch her from the side, one from her left and one from her right. A two-pointer and a one-pointer. Impatient this time, she didn't hold back. From an outsiders perspective it seems she didn't even move, and both faux-villains were destroyed in less than a second.
A loud beep echoed across the arena, followed by Present Mic's voiceand the zero-pointer had stopped in place.
"TIME'S UP!"
Sixty-nine points, Bakugo counted.
Letting out an exhausted breath and wiping the dripping sweat off his forehead, Bakugo stood tall with a smile on his face. His arms hurt from his continued quirk use, but they'd be fine in a few hours.
Katsuki had cocked his head side to side, loosening any stiff muscles. He couldn't wait to see his score. Deku was one thing, but would never dare challenge Bakugo like she did. She had made the challenge, not him, and he barely obliged the little extra.
He was counting on her to have passed, and from the way she used her quirk he had no doubt she would. To see her sour face when they next crossed paths would be all the more worth it.
It was fun. It was really fun. To be able to just destroy things with little end goal in sight cathartic to her.
At the moment she had found herself walking back to the train station with Mina, both talking about their experiences in the arena. Mina had apparently been in seventh place, two places behind an old school mate of hers. Apparently the two had only interacted twice and it was purely by accident.
When Ashido had heard Shihouin's score the girl's head had nearly blown off her neck. "Seventy-seven points!?"
"Is it really that impressive?"
"I mean, it has to be! I don't think anyone in my testing grounds had gotten anywhere near that score!"
"Someone in mine probably did."
"Who?" Ashido questioned.
"That blonde haired kid who was yelling at Izuku before the presentation."
"Izu- oh! That kid who got yelled at by the boy next to you! Now I remember." Ashido hummed in thought, remembering the room and the kids in it. "Wait, weren't they sitting next to each other?"
"Yeah. Can't guess why though."
"Maybe there's some-" Mina's train of thought was interrupted by a melodic ringtone from her phone. "Hold on, it's my mom."
Yoruichi let Mina answer the phone and instead went off into her own train of thought. With the score she got there wasn't any room for doubt that she would get in. Yoruichi never had to experience human school before, unlike Rukia who had done so on a monthly basis before her departure. When she asked the adopted Kuchiki about it, it was apparently mostly old literature, mathematics and various sciences regarding biology and similar fields.
The only issue is that Yoruichi would find herself in Super Hero School. She had some doubts that the aforementioned subjects would be the only things taught at the school.
Anything to stave off any potential boredom she may receive from being at home all day with next to nothing to do.
The Following Week
Yoruichi laid down on her small couch watching television. Currently in the menu of the television, browsing through various channels as a means to entertain herself.
She had gone through three news channels, two American shows and a handful of cartoons. At this point she may as well sleep.
Still in the process of surfing through channels, her doorbell rang. Her eyes slowly shifted towards her door. Yoruichi stood up to answer. She opened the door to see who was on the other side, somewhat surprised to see Aizawa standing in front of her.
The man had invited himself in, at least having the decency to take his shoes off before stepping on the carpet. Yoruichi wasn't mad, but would have at least preferred to extend the offer first.
"A bit intrusive, don't you think?" She said while shutting the door behind him.
"Sorry," Aizawa apologized. Yoruichi had begun to walk back to the living room to sit on her couch. "I've had a long day." He had ended up sitting on the couch next to her, eyes glued to the television but not paying attention to what's on the screen.
"What brings you my way?"
"I'm here to give you the results," Aizawa told her.
"You can't just tell me?" Yoruichi inquired, a single brow lifted in curiosity.
"You passed the written exam with a mid C – 74 percent to be specific," Aizawa explained, handing her an envelope with something circular inside it. "You also got a higher score on the practical than most"
"77 points, right?"
Aizawa nodded. "That's not including rescue points, which you got 17 of."
"So helping people got me points?" She asked.
"Specifically it's rescuing people," Shouta corrected. "There were two instances where you did so: once with a three pointer where and once with the zero pointer."
"I remember," Yoruichi commented. "So what's with the letter?"
"It's just a holographic recording of All Might welcoming you into U.A."
"Neat," Yoruichi noted, tossing the letter on the empty cushion next to her. "Is that it?" Yoruichi asked.
"I'll be your home room teacher." An odd silence formed between them. Both of the two sat in silence, contemplating the information spoken.
It wasn't something Yoruichi disliked, but if given the ability to choice she'd pick the next guy in line. She didn't hate Aizawa – she didn't like him either – but he was a hard man for Yoruichi to get along with. Primarily because of the fact he was in a higher position than she was.
"It's gonna be strange getting used to calling you sensei."
"Get used to it," Aizawa stated bluntly. Briefly and sharply, he huffed. "School year starts on April 2nd. We'll be using our quirks a lot on the first day."
"Katsuki!" He heard his father call his name. "The letter from U.A is here!"
"Coming," he called back down in a bored tone.
He already knew the outcome and so did his parents. He passed, and he didn't need to be told, but he still wanted to read the letter.
When Katsuki entered the room he saw his mother and father sitting at the dining room table, both with smiles plastered across their faces.
Katsuki's mother handed him his entrance letter, the latter of which nearly snagged it out of her hands. "Lemme see," he said, tearing open the letter to pull out a small disc.
He placed the disc on the table, then begun to fiddle around with it until a recording began to play.
"I am here! As a projection!"
"Holy shit, All Might!" Katsuki exclaimed with excitement.
"Watch your mouth!" His mother scolded, lightly slapping him in the back of the head.
Bakugo turned around, ready to bite back with words of his own, but was drawn back to the recording by All Might's voice. "Young Bakugo!" The boy's heart nearly jumped out of chest when he heard All Might say his name. His parents looked equally surprised. "On the written exam you passed with flying colors! Getting an 98 percent overall!" Bakugo smiled to himself, not even mad about the 2 percent he didn't get. "In the practical exam you had also passed! Getting 69 points on the leaderboard!"
The screen zoomed out, showing all the faces on the leaderboard. Several faces darted the top fifteen. He counted each one, only to stop when saw his face in second place.
His face dropped slightly. When he saw the face in first place, he nearly snapped the edge off the dinner table. His father paused the video, annoying him more as the dark skinned girl's face stared into his.
"Don't pause it!"
"That's your father you little shit!" His mother shouted again, causing the grown man to recoil in fright. "Don't talk to him like that!"
"Shut it, hag!"
His mother grabbed him by the hair, forcing his head down in his father's direction. "Apologize!"
Katsuki growled, forcing his mother's grip on his hair to tighten. "I... I'm sorry," he ceded, still growling in agitation.
His father, anxiously sweating, unpaused the video and let it play out. "With 69 villain points, and 0 rescue points, you passed the practical in second place! With both these scores combined, you've been welcomed to U.A! Your schedule can be found in the letter!" The screen shut off and went back into the disc.
"Second place," Katsuki thought aloud, grinding his teeth as he did so.
"Congratulations on getting into U.A!" His father sheepishly exclaimed, not at all unaware to the situation unfolding.
"It's just second place," his mother chimed in. "It's not the end of the world. Now chin up! You actually did a lot better than the rest!"
"Y-yeah," his father said. "The girl in third only got 39 points," he added, noting from where he had paused the video.
"I wasn't first," he noted, seething with each word.
"You don't need to be first," his mother spoke, "just strong. Now get over it and calm down."
Bakugo stood from his seat and proceeded to leave the room. In at least a minute, they heard their son slam his bedroom door shut.
Katsuki had always been a competitive boy, even before his quirk manifested. When he did get his quirk, he was praised all the way to heaven. Both Masaru and Mitsuki were guilty of doing it too much, so they tried to dial it back a bit when his ego was getting too big for his head. Unfortunately, it didn't work as well as they hoped.
Due to Katsuki's nature he always sought to be in the spotlight. This was the first time that was not the case. When they saw that Katsuki had gotten second place of all examinee's, they knew knew he would have a bad reaction. At least there was one good thing to come out of all of this: maybe Katsuki would finally learn humility.
There were a few different ways I wanted to play this out, but all of them just needlessly stretched out the chapter with nothing actually relevant to Yoruichi's story. This would be version 4, and the one I felt the most satisfied with.
A side note: for the foreseeable future, expect frequent enough updates because I have nothing better to do, and this story is pretty my love child atm.
REPLIES:
xerad: that is a valid criticism which I have no counter to.
bob115: I wasn't trying to push the idea of Yoruichi being pinned, sorry if it came out that way. Also, I had more in mind that Yoruichi doesn't expect anyone at UA to help her expand Shunpo, she's going to be doing that by herself (as much as UA will let her anyway). As for the pacing, yeah I can agree it's a bit slow. Lastly, I can see your point, it's a valid critique.
EricFreak: Well I'll be writing it with my style of writing. But seriously, I'll continue to do my best. Thanks for being here!
