Chapter 10: Family Dinner at Rossi's
The next morning Reid woke up to find that Emily was already awake. He got up out of bed to go get ready himself. As he was getting ready, he heard retching sounds coming from the bathroom. Spencer stopped what he was doing to check on her, only to find the door wide open.
"Emily are you okay?" He held her hair back out of the way as she emptied the contents of her stomach. Once she knew she was done she got up.
"I'm not sure." She admitted as she grabbed her toothbrush. She felt awful. Emily also blushed remembering what had happened on the jet the previous day. She never got sick, not this bad at least. If anything, it was a minor cold here or there. She told him that it was the coffee that made her sick. "I got up early to make us breakfast. I put the pot of coffee going and was about to start cooking, but the smell of the coffee for some reason made me feel nauseous." She admitted.
"You might want to get that checked out." He replied as he went back to the bedroom to get his phone. He didn't want her passing out of him again. She didn't protest, but instead went to grab her phone to try and make an appointment for today. Reid texted Hotch they may be a little late. He explained that he wanted to drive Emily there, especially after the incident on the jet. Reid didn't have to explain anything else to his boss after reading the response he got back. Hotch just asked Reid to keep him updated.
"They managed to fit me in today. I have an appointment in an hour." Emily said as she came back into the bedroom. Spencer told her that he would drive her there, and to his surprise she didn't argue with him.
They finished getting ready and made their way downstairs. The two of them sat down to eat the breakfast that Emily had made. Fortunately, the smell of the freshly brewed coffee had died down. She was actually able to eat this go round.
After finishing breakfast, they left for the day knowing that they wouldn't be back until later that evening. Emily grabbed her purse and her work gear and walked out to the SUV. She handed Spencer the keys and got in on the passenger's side. The ride there was quiet, but not in an uncomfortable way. The doctor's office wasn't that far from Emily's apartment, so the ride wasn't that long.
Once there, Spencer let Emily out while he parked the car. She was still in the waiting room when he finally walked in. He sat down next to her and started reading the book he brought with him. An anxious Emily was playing scrabble on her phone while waiting to be called back. Deep down inside she knew there was a slim possibility, but she was refusing to get her hopes up. She always pushed that thought away ever since the incident. Her name was called just as she closed out of the app.
"Emily." The nurse called from the doorway. She got up and followed the nurse to the back. Emily was then taken to a room and the nurse took her vitals. She was asked a few questions and told that the doctor would come in a few minutes. While waiting for the doctor she texted Spencer. She assured him that she shouldn't be too long and that they would be on their way to work soon. Even though she had only been waiting for a few minutes, Emily felt like she was waiting for what seemed like hours. After waiting for what seemed like forever to her the doctor knocked on the door.
"Good morning, Emily. What brings you here today?" The doctor asked as she walked into the room and closed the door. Emily had explained everything that has happened in the past few days.
"I haven't been feeling well lately. At first, I thought it was food poisoning, but now I think it may be a stomach bug that has been going around. Possibly a gastrointestinal issue I never knew I had." Emily admitted. She went on about how she's still feeling sick after a few days. The doctor continued asking Emily questions and listening as she wrote things down. The question that she asked next took Emily completely by surprise.
"When was your last period?" The doctor asked getting a bewildered look from Emily. It took her a few seconds before she answered the doctor's question.
"The twenty first of March, I guess. If they were regular again, I'd be four days late." Emily replied also informing the doctor that she miscarried two weeks before that. "I can't be pregnant if that's what you are thinking." The doctor could hear the hurt in her tone and knew that Emily was upset after mentioning her miscarriage.
"Actually, you can conceive again as early as two weeks after." The doctor explained. Emily not waiting to get hurt again still did not believe it and insisted that she couldn't be pregnant.
"At my age?" She asked still not believing her doctor. Emily reminded her that she would be turning thirty-eight in six months. She did not want to get her hopes up for something that might not happen.
"Yes." She told Emily that it was still possible. The doctor then said she wanted to run a blood test to rule out pregnancy. "Based on this and some of your other symptoms I want to run a blood test." The doctor explained. They drew a few vials of blood before sending Emily out. "You will get a call with the results as soon as they come in. That should be sometime today." The doctor said as she taped the gauze on Emily's arm.
"Thank you." Emily replied as she walked back out into the waiting room to see Spencer reading his book. He looked up when he heard the door open. He closed his book and got up. As they were riding to work, he asked her about what the doctor had to say.
"Did they figure out what is making you so sick?" He asked truly concerned about his lover. She paused for a moment to think about what to say. Two things were preventing Emily from just telling him. One was that she never did ask him if he wanted children, and the other was that she didn't want to get his hopes if up he did want children. She used the pending blood work results to her advantage to buy her time.
"They aren't sure yet. They ran a few tests and said that they would call back when the results were in." She said hoping Spencer would believe it. She wasn't lying to him because her doctor did want to run a blood test. This worried Spencer, but he wasn't letting that show.
"Whatever it is, we are going to get through this together." He promised her. He knew there was something that she wasn't telling him, but he wasn't going to push the issue. Emily smiled wondering what she did to deserve someone like Spencer Reid. She never did actually ask him if he wanted children. The child they lost was the product of their first time making love to one another. With the possibility of her being pregnant again, it reminded her that she needed to talk to Spencer and see how he feels about children. Emily hoped that he felt the same way as she did, hoped he wouldn't agree to it just because she wanted them. It was something they had to discuss, and soon if the doctor called back telling Emily the result was positive. She made a mental note to tell him later in the day.
They arrived at work and noticed that everyone was at their desks and Hotch and Rossi were in their offices. It looked like it was going to be an uneventful day working on paperwork from the previous cases. Reid began working on his tasks as soon as he sat down at his desk. He looked over at Emily and noticed that she was distracted by something. She kept looking down at her phone that was out on her desk. He assumed that she was waiting to hear back from the doctor.
About half an hour later Emily's phone starts vibrating on her desk. She immediately got up and stepped away from her desk to take the call. Spencer looked up for a second and went right back to what he was doing. Her voice was faintly heard from where he was sitting. He was able to make out her responses, but he couldn't tell if they were good or bad. All he gathered was that she was making another appointment soon.
"Are you sure?" He heard Emily ask with caution. He gathered that she was surprised. "I guess I'll be making an appointment with my doctor soon to confirm this." She replied and thanked them before hanging up. Emily went back to her desk and immediately began the paperwork that needed to be done for the day. When Morgan got up from his desk, Spencer took the opportunity to ask Emily about the call.
"Are you okay, Emily? You seem on edge." He asked her when it was just the two of them. She looked up from her work. Was it really that obvious? She was in fact on edge, she didn't even know if Spencer even wanted children. She was now torn between telling him today or after her appointment to confirm her pregnancy.
"Well, I'm not contagious or dying." She joked earning a chuckle from Spencer.
"What is it then?" He asked truly concerned for her since she was joking about it. Spencer knew Emily well enough to know that she sometimes uses humor and sarcasm to cover up the fact that she's scared. She noticed that Morgan was coming back to his desk and used that to her advantage. This time she was actually thankful for him walking up on them.
"I'll tell you later." She whispered mentally thanking Morgan for buying her more time. Emily was fine until Morgan sat down at the desk with a mug of hot coffee. The smell of the coffee once again sent her running for the nearest restroom.
"Is she okay?" Morgan asked after Emily had run off. Reid nodded and remembered how she reacted to the smell of coffee earlier in the morning. He assured his friend that Emily was fine. He also made a mental not of the two incidents with the coffee.
"She's fine, or at least that's what she told ne." Reid answered not knowing what to tell him. He hoped that he didn't say too much and also hoped that Derek wouldn't pry more. Both men looked up when Emily came back to her desk.
"Prentiss, you okay? You don't look so well." Morgan asked as she sat down at her desk. Emily looked over at him and shook her head. "Is it that bad of a hangover?" He joked trying to lighten the mood. He knew that she would never show up to work hungover but was just trying to get her to laugh. She knew that too, but still decided to glare at him because she was feeling awful and not in the mood. She went on about how the smell of coffee made her nauseous. Emily decided to let the comment slide knowing he meant no harm by it.
"I'm fine!" She snapped completely ignoring the hangover comment altogether. "Just keep the coffee away from me, the smell of it makes me sick." She looked down at his mug that has since then cooled down lessening the aroma of it. Emily Prentiss was not happy about not being able to drink coffee, let alone not being able to be around it. Spencer and Derek both felt bad because they knew how much Emily enjoyed her morning coffee. Reid remembered that there was hot chocolate and tea in the breakroom as well. He got up from his desk and went to the breakroom.
"How about some hot chocolate, Em." Spencer surprised her when he placed a mug on her desk. She gladly took the mug of hot chocolate from him.
"Thank you, Spence." She thanked him before taking a sip. He even added marshmallows which he knew she liked. She was now content and focused on getting her paperwork done.
The workday went by very slowly because it was an uneventful day. This was a rare occurrence for the BAU. This meant that Rossi would be able to host the family dinner at his place later that evening.
"What's on the menu for tonight?" Morgan called out when he saw Rossi coming down to the bullpen. The older man filled them in on what he would be preparing for dinner. Everyone was looking forward to the family dinner later.
After finishing up her paperwork, Emily was looking at a house that she had been interested in. When she had asked Spencer his thoughts on the place, he wasn't much help. He was happy as long as he was with her.
"What do you think of this place, Spence?" Emily asked as she pulled it up on her computer screen. He looked at the pictures with her. He was honest, he didn't care where they were as long as he was with her and that she was happy.
"That's a nice place, Emily." He answered looking through the info with her. "As long as you are happy, I am too." He added. She was relieved that he liked the place because she was thinking about placing a bid on the house.
"I'm glad you like the place because I might put an offer on it." Emily admitted. She felt bad for not mentioning it earlier, but she couldn't pass up the opportunity. The house had many features that she liked, and she was ready to plant roots here. She had also received a call from Clyde Easter offering her a position in London. She hadn't given him an answer yet either. "We can look at it one day after work." She added.
"I would love that." Spencer replied as he read the information about the house. "Five bedrooms is a lot though." He added when he saw that the house had five bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms. Emily shrugged off the comment and tried not to overthink his response. She had been doing that a lot lately. She really wanted a family that included children, but she wanted the whole package. She didn't want her children to grow up like she did. Her fear was that his responses were his way of saying he didn't want children.
"Is someone looking at houses?" Derek asked surprising both of them. He told them that he would love to help and reminded them that he renovated houses and rented them out on the side.
"I'll let you know when we go look at this place." Emily invited Derek to come along as well. It couldn't hurt to get another opinion, especially from someone that knows houses.
The rest of the day dragged on slowly. Eventually it was time for everyone to leave for the day. Rossi told everyone what time to show up for dinner before heading out himself. Everyone was starting to make their way out after wrapping up what they were working on. Garcia managed to convince Hotch to leave when everyone else did. Everyone on the team thought that he spent the night in his office sometimes. Aaron Hotchner was always the first person there in the morning and the last one to leave in the evening.
"How is she?" Hotch asked Reid when he noticed Prentiss walked off with Garcia. He let the boss know that Prentiss was okay. Spencer didn't go into detail but told Hotch enough to make him happy.
"Prentiss is fine." Reid replied trying to keep it simple and to the point. He honestly didn't know much himself. All she told him was that she wasn't contagious, and she wasn't dying.
"That's good to hear." The unit chief replied as he was gathering his things to leave with the rest of the team. Spencer quickly made his way out to catch up with Emily since they rode to work together. He didn't want to keep her waiting too long. Hotch went back to grab a few more things and lock up his office.
While waiting for Spencer, Emily was thinking about how she was going to tell him. She was still debating on if she wanted to tell him before her first appointment or after. She was so busy thinking about the pros and cons of waiting she didn't even notice Reid approach her.
"Ready to go?" He asked startling her from her thoughts. They got into the vehicle and were now headed to Rossi's. Emily figured the Ride to Rossi's would be a great time to bringing it up. She knew it would be unfair to leave Spencer out when it affects him too.
"Spence, can I ask you something?" Emily gathered up the courage to bring up the subject now fearing for the worst. He quickly glanced in her direction before focusing on the road again.
"Of course, Emily, you can ask me anything. You know that." He answered wondering where she was about to go with this. He noticed that whatever she was about to ask him made her nervous because she was biting her nails. He assured her that whatever she was about to ask him would not send him running. "I promise I'm not going anywhere." He added hoping to calm her down some. She wasn't so sure of that because what she was about to say could potentially change both of their lives.
"I never asked you if you wanted children. Everything that happened was just thrown at you." Emily tried to apologize but Spencer stopped her before she could continue.
"I didn't bring it up either." He went on about how he assumed that she wanted them based on how motherly she was towards children on cases. He noticed right away that it came naturally to her. "I knew you wanted children." She started crying after hearing this which had him confused. The hormones were now getting the better of her.
"Do you want children though, Spence?" She asked hoping to get an actual answer from him. He thought about it for a second before giving her the honest answer that she had been waiting for.
"Are you opposed to having a child with me?" He answered her back with another question. Then it dawned on her why he was asking her this question. He was worried that schizophrenia could possibly be passed on. Emily knew that he was worried about that because of his mother.
"Not at all, Spencer. In fact, I never realized how much I wanted this until I lost it." She let him know that she wasn't worried about their child inheriting schizophrenia. After hearing that her gave her hand a gentle squeeze and held her hand in his as he pulled into the driveway.
"I feel the same way." He agreed and went on about how heartbroken he was over the loss as well. That was when he told her about his dreams of what could have been with their happy family. After hearing this, Emily made her decision to just tell him now before going in. They had a little bit of time. They were the first ones to arrive.
"That call earlier was the doctor calling back with the test results." She figured now that she had her answer, she would tell him now while they were on the subject.
"And?" He asked waiting for her to finish. He knew where she was going with this and was waiting for her to say it.
"I'm pregnant, Spencer." She answered back confirming where he thought this conversation was going. She explained how she thought about telling him after her first appointment and viability scan. He was glad she told him now because he wanted to be there with her for it all.
"We're going to have a baby genius?" He asked making sure he heard her correctly. She loved that he referred to their baby as genius.
"We are!" She beamed with excitement. Emily allowed herself to be excited now that she knew Spencer felt the same way. She was fully prepared to keep the baby regardless of his response. Emily Prentiss could not live with herself if another innocent child was lost because of her. She often felt remorse for the two that she lost and still blames herself.
It didn't take Rossi long to answer the door when they knocked. He invited them in and offered them some wine which Emily immediately turned down. Rossi was shocked by this because Emily usually never hesitated when it came to wine. That was when she realized that she would have some explaining to do. She didn't want to tell the team, not now at least. She had no choice but to let Rossi know because he already figured it out.
"Passing on wine now, are we?" Rossi asked giving her a knowing look. David Rossi was not one to beat around the bush, so he just straight up asked her. "How far along are you?" He asked knowingly. Emily was not really surprised that Rossi just straight up asked her.
"Positive test kind of far along." She quipped back letting him know it's still very early. "Please don't say anything at dinner tonight." She asked knowing that he wouldn't do that, but still asked anyways. He told her that juice in the wine glass would look a little less suspicious.
"I remember when Carolyn was pregnant with James. We went to a party and her turning down wine was a dead giveaway." He chuckled at the memory. Rossi also told them about his son James. He knew about Emily's past and her first loss and knew that she would understand. He was like a father to all of them. Emily felt comfortable opening up to him about what had happened.
"Nothing ever prepares you for loss." Emily admitted as she told him about what happened after she was rescued from Doyle. Like Hotch, he too put two and two together and realized what had happened, but never said anything. He waited for Emily to come to him to talk about it.
"I'm so happy for the two of you." Rossi congratulated Prentiss and Reid. He also said he couldn't wait to meet the new addition the BAU family. "Give us a girl. We have two boys as of now." Rossi joked as he began preparing dinner.
Everyone started showing up not long after Rossi's little heart to hear with Prentiss and Reid. Morgan and Garcia showed up not long after Prentiss and Reid. They stopped at the bakery on their way to get the dessert.
"Sorry we're late. We couldn't agree on the dessert, so we go a few different things to try." Garcia said as she placed the cake on the table and joined everyone at the table.
"You can never go wrong with cookies." Morgan argued as he placed the cookies down next to the cake. This caused everyone to laugh.
"All of it sounds good." Spencer replied causing everyone to look up.
"Says the person who likes a little coffee with their sugar." Derek laughed he wasn't wrong Spencer did have a sweet tooth. Not long after Morgan and Garcia arrived Hotch and JJ walked in.
"Who's ready for this family dinner?" Rossi asked as he started serving everyone some of the pasta dish that he made. Everyone enjoyed the pasta and the dessert. Even after they finished eating they sat around the table and caught up for hours that evening.
