Chapter 11: A House is a Home
Today was the day that Emily and Spencer would get to see their child for the first time. Although she was excited for this adventure, Emily was still very nervous. She couldn't help but worry about this baby, especially after what happened before. She really wanted this child because she was more than ready to become a mother. After the appointment they were going to take advantage of the day and pass by the house that Emily had shown Spencer weeks ago. They were also going to call Derek to meet up with them.
"Everything is going to be okay this time, Emily." Spencer promised her as he held her hand to comfort her while they waited for the tech to come back in. They didn't have to wait long. A few minutes had passed, and the doctor walked back in. She explained the procedure to them. Emily was excited but the doctor sensed that she was nervous. She tried her best to put Emily at ease.
"Mom and Dad, are you ready to see your baby?" The doctor asked them. Emily and Spencer nodded excitedly. "Let's get our first look at this baby." She added as she explained to Emily that she may feel a little bit of pressure as she started the procedure. Emily took a deep breath as she started and waited to hear good news. The doctor continued to move the probe around to get different views before speaking to them again. The silence was making Emily start to worry.
"Is everything okay?" Emily feared the worst. Spencer squeezed her hand to remind her that he's right there with her. That little squeeze reminded Emily that she wasn't alone in this journey and that she shouldn't automatically assume the worst. It was kind of hard for her not to especially after what happened last time. Her doctor finally spoke up.
"Everything looks fine!" She replied as she moved the probe to get a different view for another image. "Would you like to see your baby and possibly hear the heartbeat." She added as she changed the setting so that the heartbeat could be heard. Emily started crying the second she heard their baby's heart beating. The doctor also turned the screen so that they could see and explained her findings to them.
"That's out baby, Spence." She cried tears of pure happiness. All Spencer could do was nod in agreement as he stared at the image on the screen in awe. This new life that they created was the product of their love for one another. This little genius was part of both Emily and himself.
"The heartbeat is nice and strong. Based on the measurements that I took and the date of your last cycle you are six weeks. This would give you an estimated due date of December 26th." The doctor explained as she typed the last of the info in. She also informed them that she would print the images she got from today's scan. She then left the room to give them privacy so that Emily could change.
"Looks like we have a special Christmas present to look forward to." Spencer said as they exited the room. They scheduled their next appointments before leaving.
"Are you ready to go look at our possible new home?" She asked as she looked down at the images again. Emily could not believe that this was actually happening. They called Derek once they were almost to the house. He gladly accepted their invitation. They decided to wait until Emily got to her second trimester before telling the team. Rossi was the only exception because he already knew.
"Prentiss, Reid, you ready to go look at this house?" Derek asked as he saw them walking up. He was already at the house waiting for them when they arrived. They hoped that he wasn't waiting for them very long. The happy couple nodded. He could tell that something was up with the two of them but couldn't put his finger on what it was. He thought that Reid could have asked her to marry him, but he didn't see an engagement ring. Maybe they were happy to move in together. He wasn't going to pry. Derek was happy that the two of them had asked for his advice on their possible new home.
"Let us know what you think of it and if we should put a bid on it." Emily responded as they made their way in the house to tour it. There were a lot of things that Emily loved about the house. They started with the den which was impressive. Spencer was already trying to picture the furniture in place and liked the image he got in his mind.
"I like the house so far." Spencer spoke up. The other two laughed since they haven't even looked at the rest of the house yet.
"Spencer, we've only seen the den so far." Derek reminded him. They forgot that Spencer didn't have a big house like the one they were touring when he was growing up.
"I know, but just from looking at the den, it's more than I had when I was growing up and definitely more space than I have now." He answered. Emily on the other hand grew up in nicer houses, but never really had a family to enjoy a home with. Her mother was often busy, so she was often lonely.
"I'm glad you like it because I'm starting to like it as well." Emily replied as they walked into the kitchen. The kitchen was nice and had plenty of space.
"Do either of you cook?" Derek asked.
"I'm not the best but I do enjoy making a few things her and there." Spencer replied. Emily wasn't the best cook either, but she enjoyed trying to make meals. Spencer gladly tried them with her.
"Same here." Emily added as she opened the door to the walk-in pantry. This was when Derek informed them that it was a professional kitchen.
"Well, whoever was in this house before really loved cooking. This is a professional kitchen with a top-of-the-line stove, oven and other appliances." Derek informed them just how good the kitchen was. He also asked if they planned on hosting any dinner parties.
"Leave that to Rossi. We aren't that good." Spencer teased as they made their way out of the kitchen. The master bedroom and bathroom were more than Emily and Spencer were expecting.
"The master bedroom and bathroom look much bigger than they did online." Emily was taking in the sight. Like Spencer, she was picturing the room with all their belongings in it. She smiled at the thought and stared off into space for a few seconds. This didn't go unnoticed.
"Picturing the room with all of our furniture and belongings in it?" Spencer asked startling her.
"Yep." She replied as she followed Spencer into the master bathroom. They noticed that Derek had gone off to a different part of the house not noticing that they stayed behind. The walk-in shower was huge and even had a bench seat in it. "We could make use of that." She gestured to the bench in the shower. Spencer's cheeks went red when he realized what she meant by that. He was hoping Derek wasn't close enough to hear that or what he was about to say.
"I'm game." He mumbled hoping that Derek wasn't close enough to hear that. They passed the massive bathtub with jets and made their way out. They ran into Derek who had just realized that they weren't behind him.
"There you are! Where have you two been?" He asked. Spencer explained that they were checking out the master bathroom that he passed up and that they were also impressed with the place so far.
"We were just checking out the master bathroom." Spencer spoke up. Derek motioned for them to follow him to see the rest of the house.
"If you are impressed with what you see so far you are really going to like the rest of the house." Derek added as they went into another bedroom. This room was big for a guest room or unknown to Derek the baby's room. There were three other bedrooms but this one was close to the master bedroom which was perfect.
"I don't think I even need to see the rest." Spencer replied. Emily shook her head.
"It's important we see everything." She countered Spencer's comment. Morgan agreed that they should look at the rest of the house. Spencer was a genius but his emotions and excitement to have a place for his family was currently getting the better of him. Never in his wildest dreams did he think he would find someone that loved him for more than the fact that he was smart let alone have a child of his own on the way. Much to their delight there were more things to love about the place that they may call home. Emily's phone rang just as they got to the last bedroom. She walked away for a few minutes to take the call. It was Clyde Easter. Derek and Spencer continued looking around. They could faintly hear what Emily was saying. They heard her say something about not taking an offer.
"No Clyde, thank you for the offer, but I am thinking about staying here." The two men wondered what Clyde had offered her. Whatever it was, she didn't sound very excited about it. Spencer was confused, she never told him about any offer.
"Isn't Clyde her former colleague from Interpol? Morgan asked as they waited for her to come back. Reid nodded wondering what Clyde Easter had offered Emily. The two of them went back to talking about the house before Emily came back.
"Is everything okay?" Spencer asked as she rejoined them. The look she gave him told him that she'd tell him later when they were alone. She assured him that she was okay though so Derek wouldn't worry too.
"I'm fine." She assured them. "Just an annoying phone call that I've been ignoring. I finally decided to answer so they stop calling." She explained that someone had been calling her phone multiple times. It wasn't a complete lie, Clyde had called multiple times and she had been annoyed by it.
"What do you two think of this house?" Morgan asked changing the subject knowing that Emily didn't want to go into detail.
"I could see this being out home." Spencer spoke up for both of them as he looked up to Emily to see if she had anything else to say. She started crying when she heard him say that this house could be their home. She wiped her tears away before anyone noticed. Unlike Spencer and Derek, Emily never truly had a home. In her eyes a house is different from a home. She grew up constantly moving from place to place due to her mother's job. Not only that, but she also never had family that was always there for her. Her mother would put her work before her own daughter. She wanted their baby to have everything she never had.
Emily wasn't going to quit the BAU after the baby was born and neither was Spencer. They were still going to spend time with their child and be a family. They were going to make it work somehow. There was still plenty of time to make those arrangements.
After touring the house Derek suggested that they grab a bite to eat before parting ways. Spencer and Emily gladly took him up on that offer. After they finished lunch, they went their separate ways.
"See you tomorrow." Derek said before driving off. Spencer and Emily went back to her place. They went back to Emily's place to enjoy the rest of their day provided they didn't get a call for a case. Very rarely did they have a day where they weren't called in. They were taking advantage of every moment of it.
Once they got inside Spencer decided to ask Emily about the call from earlier. She sat down on the couch next to him and began to open up about the calls from Clyde. Spencer didn't know what to say. He knew that Emily didn't like bringing up Doyle and felt bad about asking, but he didn't want to lose her.
"Ever since that terrible case came to an end Clyde has been asking if I wanted to go back to Interpol." Emily admitted and looked up to see Spencer's reaction. "He says he thinks I would be a great unit chief for the London office." She added.
"Do you want to accept the offer?" Spencer asked. He didn't want her to go and take their child with her. The BAU was his family, and he really didn't like the idea of picking up everything and leaving the country.
"If you would have asked me that few years ago, I would have said yes instantly." She answered truthfully. He wondered where she was going with this.
"What about now?" He asked fearing the answer.
"I told him I'm thinking about staying here." She pulled him closer as she explained her reasoning. "I have a reason to stay here no amount of money could make me abandon the little family that we have created." She started crying happy tears.
"You said thinking, does that mean you were considering it?" He asked causing her to chuckle. He was confused as to why she thought this was funny.
"No, I wasn't, I just didn't want to be rude and burn bridges." She admitted causing him to laugh. She was right it's smart to have connections. "Next time he calls I will give him a definite answer." She stated.
"I'm glad you are staying because you two mean the world to me." Spencer said relieved that she wasn't leaving for the job opportunity in London.
