The bell that signaled it was time to go home finally rang, but she wasn't the least bit happy. It was raining. She hated the rain; loathed it. And to make it worse, she'd have to run into him on her way out. His favorite days were the rainy ones, and he'd be out in front of the school soaking up the rain as if it were sunlight.

She'd known him since kindergarten. He was the kid that always did his work, got straight A's, and still managed to be the coolest guy in school. In their first year, he'd had the fifth graders kissing his feet.

He'd been around ever since then. She didn't like him at all. He'd never done anything other than smirk at her and walk away. Not that she minded.

She lingered in the doorframe longer than necessary. Even after exiting the building, she still stood under the safety of the awning. But, after realizing almost everyone was gone and school had been out for twenty minutes, she decided she'd have to walk in the rain to get home whether she liked it or not.

She slowly walked down the steps, hesitating before stepping off the last one. She was instantly met with thousands of tiny rain drops.

And there he was, standing in the rain.

She clutched her books to her chest, head down, and started across the school yard.

"Olette!" She nearly jumped when he called her name. While, at the same time, she wondered if his voice always sounded so…silky when he spoke. It was the first time he'd ever said her name. He was walking towards her, and she wasn't moving away. It was raining, and he was soaked and walking towards her and she wasn't doing anything.

Her mind was full and her face was pale.

"It's raining," He said. "It's raining and we're the only ones here to enjoy it. Pity, hmm?"

"Go away," she told him. "I want to go home. I don't like the rain."

But he knew that.

"Let's dance." He pulled her towards him, and she gasped out loud. But he couldn't hear it over the rain. Her heart matched the beat of the rain. Or maybe that was his heartbeat.

"I can't." She managed out, blushing. Her hair was wet and her makeup was running. Her clothes were probably close to transparent, and she was cold. And he wanted to dance. "I don't want to." She said, more firmly this time. "I don't want to because rainy days are always bad memories, and I won't want to remember it." Her nose was in the air and she was being stubborn again, just like her normal self.

He, on the other hand, was being erratically different.

------------------------------------------------------------

"It's okay, we'll move like today

never happened."

And he pulled her along, swinging her around the schoolyard. She dropped her books, but didn't seem to notice.

She didn't want to be seen. He was known for his love of water. She was known for her hate of it.

She was glad they were alone, and that he was taller than her. He shielded her from most of the rain, and she pulled closer to him. She rested her cheek against the cool wetness of his school shirt, which he'd unbuttoned sometime after school. His white undershirt was plastered to his skin, and she almost blushed.

She'd looked forward to going home and sitting in front of the fireplace to warm up. She had looked forward to staring into the flames, flickering with the light of another era. She was known as fire, being extinguished with the slightest chance of rain.

------------------------------------------------------------

But, fire is sacrificed for the love of rain
