Chapter 2

The next day, Jane met the gang properly. Besides Axel, who she was unfortunately already acquainted with. Dottie was their newest and had just left the loonie bin. Funshine was the biggest of them all, their muscle. But as Kali pointed out, despite his size, he was really a teddy bear. Mick was their eyes, their protector. After Lisa, Mick was probably the most reasonable of the group, agreeing with her that it was way too soon to being going on the hunt again. Jane looked for a number on Funshine's wrist as he shook her hand, but didn't find one. Kali explained that none of them had numbers but they were just like them, because they were all outcasts. Society left them behind, hurt and discarded them, left them for dead. But Kali and Lisa had saved them, so now they helped them.

In life, Axel declared, you roll over or fight back and they were all fighters. Which prompted the question, who did they fight?

Lisa dug out their stash of trophies, various IDs from former employees at the Lab, and dumped it on the table. Every single one belonged to a person who was, in some way, responsible for what happened to them. Jane didn't understand at first, until it hit her that they killed the "bad men", as she called them. She sounded both uncertain and surprised. But Lisa put it as simple as possible: the bad men were criminals and they made them pay for their crimes. Society certainly never would and someone had to, so why not them? While Axel and Dottie doubted Jane, she informed them that she was a fighter, that she'd killed. Of course she had, Lisa thought, it was was Papa raised them to do. To what end, the girls neither knew nor cared to discover.

"These men you killed," Kali questioned, "did they deserve it?"

"They hurt me," she answered quietly.

"And they still want to hurt you. To hurt us."

"We're just making the first move," Lisa added diplomatically.

"Come." Jane followed her older sisters as they led her out into the day. "We were just like you once. We kept our anger inside. We tried to hide from it, but then that pain festered." Jane didn't understand the word.

"It spread," Lisa explained. "We couldn't control our gifts. They would lash out, hurting us. Hurting each other." Kali tugged her sisters hand into her own, lacing their fingers together.

"Until finally we confronted our pain, and we began to heal." The girls hopped off a small ledge and onto the abandoned nearby rail yard. "Do you see that train? Draw it to us." Jane looked between her sisters, uncertain, but neither offered any comfort or assurances. She raised her hand toward the abandoned train car covered in graffiti in the distance. Both her sisters could hear metal creaking. They watched as the train shifted, but it barely moved. It just squirmed in place. Jane was struggling, but she kept trying to pull it toward them until she couldn't anymore. She lowered her arm and the train stopped dead.

"I can't," Jane gasped, leaning over and panting.

"Last night, you told me you lifted a van once." Their little sister nodded, remembering the moment vividly. It had been Papa, he was going to steal her from Mike and her friends. "The bad men were trying to take you away again and that made you angry. Find that anger. Focus on that. Not the train, not its weight." Jane nodded and took a breath, lifting her arm again.

"You have to find something from your life. Something that really pisses you off and channel it," Lisa instructed. The train started to creek but it wasn't moving.

"Dig deeper," her other sister ordered. "Your whole life you've been lied to. Imprisoned." She held her breath, her anger rising with every word. The train began to move. First at a crawl, then steady and sparking against the concrete. Lisa shared a look with Kali, nodding as a grin grew across her face. "The bad men took away your home, your mother." Jane's nose began to bleed as she strained to move the train even closer. "They took everything from you."

"They stole your life, Jane. They stole all our lives!" Jane screamed and the train finally came to a stop in front of them. She collapsed to her knees and let out a breath as the gang ran up, cheering and praising her. She couldn't help but smile, falling back onto her bottom. It almost felt like she was back with her friends again. Axel, Dottie, Mick and Funshine - they were a bizarre mirror to Mike, Will, Lucas and Dustin. Different, but still good. They protected her sisters from the bad men, the same way her friends had protected her. Kali crouched before her with a smile while Lisa knelt behind her, rubbing her back.

"So how do you feel?" Jane took a breath and nodded.

"Good." For the first time in a long time, she felt so good.

Once they were back inside, the gang led Jane to the board of all their targets. Dozens of them, all with notes of any information they had gathered. If they'd moved addresses, if they'd changed their names, what cities they'd moved to and when - whatever they could get their hands on. Some of the pictures had been crossed out, problems they'd taken care of. Her sisters informed her that all the pictures were of the bad men they believed were still alive. Because these people knew about them, it made them hard to track. Hopefully, not anymore. Not with Jane and her gift. When they asked if she knew any of them, Jane pulled one of the clippings and said he'd hurt her mother. Ray Carroll. He'd done a hell of a lot more than hurt her mother. He'd taken particular sick pleasure in torturing Kali and Lisa, electrocuting them with a cow prod for any minor infraction. Or maybe because he was just bored and felt like it.

It was decided, for Jane's sake, that Ray was their target. It took some time. Jane had specific needs in order to find someone. She needed complete silence beyond the static of a radio and she needed total darkness. Lisa used her hanky to blindfold her sister and then Jane went to work. Ray's picture was crumpled in her tight grip for a long time. The others sat and waited, some more patiently than others, until she finally ripped the picture. Nose bleeding, she removed the blindfold and tossed it back to Lisa, telling them the details she managed to capture. Dottie pulled out the phonebook and went to work finding Gramercy Apartments. There was one on Washington and Bethel in Lilburn, an hour east. The fact that they didn't have a new ride was of the most concern to Mick, the very thing Lisa had brought up the night before. Kali wasn't concerned though, proclaiming that they'd just swap plates.

"It's risky," Mick warned. Lisa gave her sister a pointed look, as if to I told you so.

"And where's the fun if there's no risk? We want to give our sister a memorable first day, right?" Dottie was down for anything. Funshine and Axel were immediately in, the former with much less enthusiasm. Out numbered, Mick said screw it and the gang went to work. Kali turned her eyes turned to Lisa. The blonde looked at Jane, who was watching her carefully. Reluctantly, she nodded.

"Fuck it. Let's do this." Jane smiled, happy her sister was going to join them. "But not dressed like that." The curly haired girl immediately frowned and look down at her clothes. "Rule number one of being badass, Janey: dress the part. You can't be a badass looking like a farmer."

Kali and Lisa set about finding Jane new clothes, something to help her fit in with the rest of the gang. Dottie designated herself as Jane's stylist, slicking her hair back with gel and doing her makeup. Funshine and Axel secured their arms while Mick worked on getting the car ready. They just had to hope changing the plates would be enough to cover their asses. When all was said and done, the group hit the road high on adrenaline. While Mick sped down the road, Axel and Dottie were busying jamming out. Funshine watched them, amused as always and shared a laugh with Kali as she helped Jane pick out a mask. Lisa wasn't laughing though, Electric Light Orchestra blaring in her ears through the headphones of her Walkman. Either she was the only one who noticed them driving past some cops busting someone or the others just plain didn't care. Eventually, they had to pull off for supplies and stopped at Oscars Gas'N'Go. Mick stayed outside to fill up the tank while the others went inside.

"Hey, your bathroom is leaking," Kali told the clerk, Darrel. He looked over the counter, confused. Until he saw the veritable river of shitty water Kali told his brain was spilling out from under the door. Darrel rushed to the bathroom to fix the imaginary problem. The moment the door was shut, the game began.

"Okay, contestants, you have a minute and a half. Let's begin your Supermarket Sweep!" Axel joked and the gang scattered.

While he jumped over the counter to get the cash and cigarettes, Funshine was busy grabbing beers and sodas. Dottie lackadaisically grabbed tampons and some candy for herself and the other girls before trying on sunglasses. Lisa pulled Jane with her, snagging a basket to load up with food. Lisa snagged cereal, chips and some premade sandwiches, all great options for being on the road. She also grabbed a few packs of her favorite brand of bubblegum. Jane, however, went straight for the frozen waffles. Eggos were an odd choice, but Lisa opted not to argue considering how happy her little sister was snatching them. What a weird kid, she thought with a bemused smile. They'd get better groceries when the job was done, restock their fridge. Hell, maybe they'd go out to eat, treat Jane for her first night out and joining the gang. It wouldn't be hard. They could get in and out anywhere in town for free thanks to Lisa.

"Hey!" Everyone froze. It appeared Kali's illusion wore off, as Darrel was back with a gun aimed straight at Axel. "Put that back or I'll blow your head off!" Lisa stopped at the end of the aisle, waving Jane to stay behind her. "You hear me, freak?" Kali wandered into his line of vision, completely unbothered.

"Put the gun down," she ordered calmly. Darrel pointed the gun at her, telling her to stay back. She only raised her arms and slowly began to approach him. "Darrel, your money is insured. We're only stealing from the war criminal billionaires who own this place. You won't even lose a dime."

"I said stay back!"

"We're on the same side. I promise." Darrel warned her to stay back again, the barrel of his gun inching ever closer to her face. Kali's eyes met Lisa's and the blonde nodded.

"I got this. Watch," Lisa whispered to Jane. Sneaking up on Darrel, she pressed her fingertips to the back of his neck. The effect was immediate, his eyes glazing over with a milky film. "Drop the gun," she ordered. Darrel did so and Axel hopped over the counter. He quickly snatched up gun the fallen gun, happy to have another for his vast collection. "Just stay calm. We're not gonna hurt you."

"You're not gonna hurt me," he repeated dumbly. Jane walked to stand beside Kali. The elder was grinning proudly, but the younger watched completely dumbfounded. It was just like Lisa had said: she spoke, he had no choice. It was like the man was in a trance.

"We were never here. Do you understand, Darrel? You never saw us."

"I never saw you." Lisa looked at Jane and winked.

"These are not the droids you're looking for," she joked. The others shared a laugh too as Darrel repeated the phrase. But the laughter soon stopped as the sound of police sirens reached their ears. The gang bolted out of the gas station, Mick tearing out of the lot and taking the pump with her. Apparently, changing the plates wasn't enough.

It was late when they finally arrive in the sleepy neighborhood.

Mick wanted them to stick to the routine, case the place and be assured Ray was alone before going to work. But Kali brought up an excellent point: they had Jane, who could case the place without even leaving the van. Jane concentrated a moment before informing them that Ray was watching television, alone. Mick quickly pulled on her cat mask and waited for everyone to hop out before moving the van to the back. She'd keep it running, ready to make a quick getaway when the job was done. While Jane had chosen the plain and simple baby doll mask, the others sported their usual picks. Funshine put on his Funshine Care Bear mask, hence his name, and Axel kept his unravelled mummy. Dottie enjoyed the clown mask that resembled the makeup of the recently incarcerated John Wayne Gacy. When she first picked it out, none of them chose to comment on what that exactly meant regarding her mental state. Kali put on her standard green phantom with a sickening smile, which made sense considering her gift for phantasmagoria, while Lisa happily put on her lamb mask. No one ever suspected the little lamb to actually be the wolf amongst the sheep.

Jane got them into Ray's apartment with her gift, shutting off his TV and unlocking his door with practiced ease. They crept in nice and quiet. Ray was busy fiddling with his TV, completely unaware of the danger lurking behind him. By the time he realized someone was in his apartment, it was too late. Funshine forced him to sit then moved to guard the door. Even if Ray could get up and leave, there was no way he could overpower the much bigger and stronger man. Ray was terrified, telling them to take whatever they wanted. Axel assured him that they would, Dottie following up to demand his wallet. Ray told them where to find it so the pair wandered off to collect it, and to help themselves to whatever else they wanted in his bedroom. When Kali and Lisa removed their masks, Jane looked between them questioningly. Her sisters nodded that it was okay and, cautiously, she took hers off too. All three of them had their eyes pinned on Ray, who was shaking in his chair as he looked between all of them.

"Do you remember us?" Ray shook his head. Kali used her powers, projecting an illusion of the three of them as children in the Lab. "What about us? Do you remember us, Ray?" His eyes widened in horror as he realized just who they were. He started to beg and, incensed, Lisa punched him. The blow sent him clear off his chair and onto his knees.

"You assholes always beg for mercy," she snarled. "We begged. Did you ever show us any mercy?" No. Never. No one at the Lab did, no matter how much they'd pleaded and cried.

"You hurt Mama." Jane shouted and threw her arm out, sending Ray flying against the wall. He laid there, against the crack he'd made, bleeding and grunting in pain.

"Please, listen," he pleaded shakily, groaning as the girls stalked toward him. "I just did what he told me to do. He said she was sick!"

Kali shook her head and scolded him, "You had a choice, Ray. And you chose to follow a man you knew was evil." Jane raised her hand again, ready to hurt him when he pleaded for her to wait.

"I can help you find him!" he cried.

"Find who?" Lisa asked. They'd keep Ray alive just long enough for him to lead them to others who worked at the Lab. Just like all the others that had come before him. Instead, he shouted that he could take them to Brenner and Lisa paled, eyes whipping to her sister.

"Papa is gone," Jane stated firmly. Ray reiterated that he was alive.

"Don't lie to us, Ray," the blonde warned.

"I'm not lying!" he cried. "I swear," he whimpered pathetically. "He trusts me. I'll take you to him."

"If he is alive," Kali said confidently, "Jane will find him. Just as she found you. Do it." Before he could plead for his life again, Jane clenched her fingers and Ray collapsed to the ground. "Not too quick. He wasn't so generous with your mother." The older girls watched unsympathetically as Ray's body slid across the floor, choking under the weight of Jane's power. Their little sister was shaking, straining, rage quaking all the way down to her bones. Until suddenly, she stopped and Ray could blessedly breathe again. "What's wrong?" Jane didn't answer. "What's wrong?!"

"We got a problem!" Axel announced, rushing back in with Dottie hot on his heels. There were kids in the apartment. It seemed Ray had a family. How nice for him, Lisa thought sarcastically, to move on from torturing children to having his own with such ease. But Kali didn't care.

"Did he show your mother mercy? No! He took her from you, without hesitation."

"We gotta go, K! They called the cops!" Axel warned.

"We finish this first!" Kali shouted. "Jane, now!" While Ray begged, it became clear that Jane wasn't going to kill him so Kali took matters into her own hands. She pulled her gun and aimed it but, before she could shoot, Jane twitched her head and the gun went flying out the window. Kali gasped and stare at her little sister, shocked and angry. But Jane was defiant, refusing to back down. "Go, Jane. Go!" The little girl refused to move until Funshine gently nudged her out the door, reminding her the cops were on the way. The last thing any of them wanted, Jane especially, was being picked up by the cops. "Lisa." The blonde nodded at her sister and leaned over Ray, wrapping a hand tight around his throat. Just like with Darrel, his eyes glazed over the moment her hand made contact.

"You're not gonna tell anyone about us, especially not Papa," she ordered and Ray chocked out the words, completely under her spell. "Because you're not gonna talk ever again." Her grip on his throat tightened and he gasped for air, but Lisa didn't care. "Everyone you ever hurt, every one of our siblings, they're gonna keep you company for awhile. You imprisoned and tortured us, Ray. It's only fair you experience the same. Have fun, you fat fuck," she spat, pushing away from him.

The others had already scampered off, but Kali had waited for her. The sisters linked hands and bolted, leaping down the stairs. Their gang was screaming for them to hurry, the cops had already pulled in out front. Mick didn't even wait for them to shut the door behind them once they were secured in the van. She just took off like a bat out of hell. While Kali berated Jane, shouting at her that she could show mercy if she wanted but to never ever take away her choice, Lisa wiped the blood from her nose. She hadn't pulled that trick in awhile, not since she was with Papa. He'd discovered it one day when he placed her in isolated testing, far from Kali, sending in various nurses and orderlies for her to test her powers on. Stretching her muscles, Papa called it.

One of the first things they'd learned was that she could imprison a persons consciousness within their own mind. Eventually, they discovered she could also overload another persons mind in a variety of ways. Psionic inundation, Papa had called it. Sometimes it was as small as memory loss or minor brain damage, others lost consciousness for a time, some ended up in a vegetative state and a few even died, much to Papa's displeasure. He knew the skill would prove useful, but he so hated having to hire new staff to accommodate her putting them out of work. That was usually when he'd send in Ray to punish her with the cow prod. Papa was always too chicken shit to hurt her himself.

But Lisa had more control over it now than she did all those years ago. Ray's fate wouldn't be random like the nurses and orderlies had been. After taking a long overdue mental beating from the memories of all her siblings, Ray would die. She made damn sure of that.

And she couldn't care less.
