Nearing the coordinates, Maura dials Agent Thompson and then leaves the phone in her car. Hoping it will give her enough time for help to arrive. Entering the disused building it is full of dark corridors and stairs. If she didn't have instructions on where to go she would easily get lost. SHIT! She thinks to herself, a dawning realisation hits her, even if the FBI gets here they have no idea which room to find them in. And this place is like a maze.
Turning the corner she can see a light source. Nearing it there is a door that is slightly open. Slowly and cautiously approaching it not knowing what she is going to find. Pushing the door open her heart feels like it's going to beat out of her chest. Scanning the poorly lit room, she sees an outline of a figure slumped in a chair. Forcing her eyes to focus more she sees it's Jane, hoping that she is just unconscious. "Oh Jane" she says almost in a whisper. Every fiber of her being is screaming at her to run to her. But she knows she can't, not knowing what danger she is going to find.
Seemingly from nowhere a dark figure appears from behind Jane. She can't make out the face but the voice she'll never forget. "Hello, Dr Isles or should I say Dr Isles-Rizzoli"
"Hoyt" The blonde says frozen to the spot. "Impossible...I autopsied you" She says in shock.
"That might be so…. Are you afraid of me now?" He says
Maura is transported back into the interrogation room when he had threatened to rape her. And she told him she wasn't afraid of him. That memory alone sends a shiver down her spine. How can this be Hoyt? Her scientific mind is telling her is it physically impossible that a dead man can come back to life. Yet her senses are telling her it's him.
Hoyt can see how the blonde has tensed up and the wide eyed look of horror in her eyes. He can see she is afraid of him. He lets out a playful laugh. "Now, pick the scanner up?" he orders her.
Looking to the floor, Maura can see there is a handheld scanner that security uses to detect metal objects on people. Fuck she thinks to herself and her heart sinks. Slowly bending down and not taking her eyes off of the dark figure. She starts to move her hand around until it touches the scanner. Still keeping her eyes focused on the danger ahead, she starts waving it over her body. Trying her best not to set it off, but she's not that lucky. It keeps beeping, indicating she is hiding something on her person.
"Toss it to me, please," Hoyt asks.
Reluctantly removing Jane's gun from the back of her pants, Maura tosses it in the direction of Hoyt.
Picking up the gun. "Tut tut tut" Hoyt says. "Did you honestly not think I would know about Janie's second gun...hidden in the wardrobe safe".
Unable to hide her shock, Maura lets out a visible gasp. "How?" She says. Quickly glancing over to her 'unconscious' wife who still hasn't moved.
Ejecting the magazine and cocking the bullet out of the chamber before chucking the gun to the corner of the room where it lands with a loud bang. "I must say, you and Janie here" he says whilst putting his hands on Jane's shoulder. "Have a lovely home, and an even lovelier daughter".
No longer able to contain her anger "You son-of-a-bitch" She shouts "You stay away from our daughter".
"Don't worry Doctor...I only want you and Janie" Hoyt says with a laugh. "Now I want you to handcuff yourself to that bed over there" he says, indicating to the blonde woman.
Looking over to her left there is what looks like an old bed frame with a disgusting mattress, covered in god knows what. Suddenly a horrible thought enters her mind about Jane and Hoyt. Mentally shaking them away. I need to focus! I can't start imagining stuff like that, right now! thinking to herself. Instead she doesn't move, staying her ground looking at Hoyt in total defiance.
"Very well then...we can just jump straight to it" Hoyt says, pulling Jane's head back to expose her neck. Slowly cutting it with the scalpel she didn't realise he was holding.
Seeing the blood starting to roll down her wife's neck sends a jolt through her system. "Okay, okay, please stop" she says rushing over to the bed and handcuffing one of her wrists.
Seeing that the small blonde woman is complying he stops cutting Jane's neck. The wound is only superficial, nothing serious but the amount of blood that has flowed has served its purpose. Satisfied that Maura won't cause him any more trouble, turning to the wall behind him where Jane is still seated. He flicks the light switch, bathing the whole room in a bright white light. No longer is he cast in shadow.
The sudden bright light hitting her retinas causes Maura to squeeze her eyes shut. Before the room was almost in complete darkness apart from that one spot light. The sudden change in light has caused her eyes to lose focus, to compensate she tries blinking rapidly to try and let them adjust. Whilst trying to refocus she can hear the sound of footsteps walking towards her, getting nearer and nearer. It can only be Hoyt.
But when her eyes focus on the figure in front of her, it's not the fabled boogeyman. "Who are you?" she says with shock in her voice. "You're not Charles Hoyt".
Standing there is a man, approximately in his late 30's. With short brown hair and a smug smile on his face. "Of course not….Charles Hoyt is dead" he says with a smirk. "You should know that Doctor..after all your wife put a scalpel through his heart".
Maura's head is swimming, she can feel herself starting to feel faint. Her mind is not understanding what is going on. And how she heard that monsters. "But...You spoke like him," she says almost in a stammer.
"Oh, that," He says, waving his hand in the air nonchalantly. "That was nothing….a little bit of tech know how. I accessed samples of Hoyt speaking and voila" he says pulling out a little box. Speaking into it. "I sound like the legendary serial killer, the surgeon himself".
Maura is almost hyperventilating by this point. "But...I don't understand...why? Why go to all this trouble?".
Moving closer so he is face to face with Maura, she can almost feel his breath on her skin. "Good old fashioned revenge" he says with a hint of anger in his voice.
Looking intently into those blue eyes. They look so soulless, and empty. "Who are you?" she asks, finally getting her breathing under control.
"Shaun Graham" he says with a grin. And before the blonde can react he grabs her hair and slams her head hard against the wall behind her knocking her unconscious.
Opening her eyes and trying to get them to focus. Feeling like she had gotten drunk the night before and is now going to be nursing a killer hangover. Moving her hand to place it on the back of her head, but something is stopping her from doing so. Looking down and seeing the handcuff everything comes flooding back to her. Except whilst in her unconscious state, Shaun had adjusted her and now both of her hands are handcuffed. Knowing that he had touched her without her knowing makes her sick to her stomach.
"I'm glad that you're awake" Shaun says.
Glancing up and focusing on the voice in the room she see's Shaun standing behind Jane. Who appears now to be awake. "Jane," Maura says. But there is nothing, no reaction. Looking into those brown eyes, they are glazed over like she is in some sort of trance or daze. "What have you done to her?" she asks. Trying not to break down in front of this deranged psychopath.
"It's amazing what you can do to someone's mind" he says whilst placing his hand on top of Jane's head. "Given enough time and trauma".
No longer able to hide her anger. "You mean by murdering and drugging someone" Maura says.
"Yes, those drugs were very helpful, I knew if I altered Jane's mind chemically, then I could alter it permanently through actions and words" he says whilst displaying a wicked grin.
"You are a sociopath...they were right to kick you out of the FBI" Maura shouts out, unable to stop herself. As soon as the last word left her lips she knew she had made a big fist was moving so fast that she didn't see it, but she definitely felt the force of it as it hit her in the face. The force of the punch alone would have knocked her off the bed if she wasn't handcuffed to it. Feeling dizzy, shaking her head as if to try and shake the effects away. Lifting her painful head up, she is positive he has just broken her nose as she can feel the warm flow of blood running out of it. Trying to hide the pain, swallowing she is instantly hit with a coppery taste. Her belief was correct.
Grabbing the blondes face hard in his hand. Running the scalpel softly down the petit woman's face, but not breaking the skin. "Your dyke!.. wife, cost me everything" he says. "But It won't be me who kills you doctor" , roughly letting her go. Heading over to where the trance like Jane is still sitting. Her eyes are open, focused intently on an unseen force. Pushing her chair that is on wheels over towards her wife, so they are now face to face..
"Jane," Maura pleads. "Please baby...wake up". Again no response from her.
Kneeling down next to Jane, Shaun asks "Do you recognise this doctor?" holding up a scalpel for her to see.
Yes she does recognise it, she should. It's one of her own. Not responding, instead just glaring at him.
Letting out a laugh Shaun continues. "Well, okay then" taking the scalpel and placing it in Jane's hand. Instantly her hand tightens around it.
Maura doesn't like seeing her wife like this, but she is starting to feel frightened. That Shaun has truly broken her wife, and that she's about to do something she will regret for the rest of her life.
"You see, my apprentice here will actually be doing the killing" Shaun says with a smile.
Maura's stomach drops.
Pulling out the little device he talks into it. "Remember how you felt Janie….when you killed Maddie" he says.
Maura knows her wife didn't kill Maddie but then she hears Jane it sends chills down her spine.
"Powerful" Jane says.
"I want you to do it again Janie, I want you to feel the good doctor's blood on your hands" he says.
Seeing Jane's body language change. Maura is sure that she is about to attack her. "Please baby….wake up" she says crying.
Leaning in closer to the brunette's ear. "Feel powerful again Janie, do it" Shaun demands.
Starting to lift her hand up that is holding the scalpel, Jane leans in closer to the blonde.
Maura's whole body is shaking. She didn't think it would end like this. That the love of her life is about to kill her. She truly believes this is the end. Through tears she declares her forever love to her. "Jane...I love you" she says one last time. Not wanting this version of Jane to be the last thing she sees, she's about to close her eyes. When Jane winks at her. Before Maura can react. Jane leaps off the chair and onto Shaun.
"JANE!" Maura screams trying to get out of her restraints. All she can do is watch as Jane seems to have Shaun pinned down to the floor. There's a quick swish of her arm and then blood starts to pool underneath them both.
"Oh god..Jane '' Maura screams again, still fighting against the handcuffs making the skin red and starting to bleed around her wrists.
Everything seems to stop...and goes eerily quiet. Shaun is lying motionless on the floor under Jane. But Jane seems to be frozen to the spot not moving.
"Jane…" Maura shouts again.
Turning around and looking at her wife, before glancing to her chest then back up to the blonde. "I love you too" she says before collapsing on her back.
"NOOOOOOO" Maura screams. During the fight, Jane must not have known that Shaun was holding another scalpel. When the brunette slit his throat he had managed to plunge it into her heart. Watching helplessly as she can see her wife struggling to breathe as the scalpel is sticking out of her heart. There was only one thing she could think of, to do. And with a quick pull motion snapping her thumb in its socket. "FUCK!" she screams. That hurt more than she was expecting. But it enables her to pull her hand free from one of the cuffs. Knowing that time is everything she couldn't rest. So she did it again with her other hand. Once she was free, not caring about her own pain. Throwing herself to the ground next to her wife. "Jane," she says.
Jane couldn't believe there was an angel standing over her. She had dreamt she had seen Maura being held prisoner but she wasn't sure. The drugs made everything foggy and confusing. "Are you real?" she asks through a ragged breath.
"Sshh..don't try to speak" Maura says, cradling Jane's head in her lap. "I'm real, my sweet girl...I'm here" she says, placing a hand on Jane's cheek. Frantically looking around for anything she can use to try and save Jane but she knows there's nothing.
"I'm sorry" Jane says through slurred speech.
The brunettes breathing is getting more and more laboured. Not able to stop the tears they are flowing freely now. "For what my darling" Maura says lovingly.
Jane coughs, coughing up a bit of blood and struggling to breathe.
"Jane….please hold on….please" Maura says.
Once again Jane tries to finish what she was saying "for..not..being..with..you..and..amelia"
"Oh Jane," Maura says. Leaning down and placing a kiss on top of her wife's head. "You'll always be with us".
The room is suddenly filled with lots of people all screaming and shouting. "FBI".
Not even looking up, staring into her wife's eyes, as if to will them to stay open watches them close. Maura doesn't hear the voices, until she feels a hand on her shoulder.
"Maura...let the EMT's work on Jane" Agent Thompson says.
Lifting her up off the floor and trying to help her walk. But he can feel she is unsteady on her feet, then without warning she drops to the floor. That's when he notices the blood on the back of her head. "WE NEED ANOTHER MEDIC HERE" he shouts out.
Surveying the room he doesn't know what the hell happened. He has one dead with a slit throat, another fighting for her life with a scalpel in her heart and another unconscious with potentially life threatening head injuries.
He just prays that both women survive. But glancing over at the EMT's working on Jane. He doesn't hold out much hope.
Authors Notes: Still more to come with this story. It is by far no way finished. I hope you liked this chapter. Short but sweat.
Peace and Love.
