In this story the blue spirit episode happens before The Southern Air Temple, where Aang learns about the genocide of his people.
This is mainly because I wanted Socka to meet blue before getting his sexism knocked out of him by Suki.
The blue spirit was not impressed with the avatar and his companions.
Given the fact that they handed their trust over so easily. Not even an hour after meeting him they unrolled their sleeping bags and passed out.
He was left standing in the middle of their camp wondering what to do.
The girl had volunteered her brothers sleeping bag, much to socka's annoyance, but he had refused.
Then after a fascinating conversation they had about him, in front of him, which he uttered not a word during, they decided to let him sort himself out.
To be fair that wasn't what was bothering him so much. The blue spirit had been on his own for years and had grown accustomed to sleeping in small forts he built.
It was the fact that they made themselves so completely vulnerable to a stranger that bugged him.
They didn't even come up with a watch schedule or anything.
Joining their group was a terrible idea.
If the masked vigilante was to be traveling with them he knew he needed to make some changes.
Someone had to keep these children alive.
So with a silent sigh the blue spirit searched the nearby trees for a sturdy branch. Shimmering up the trunk with unnatural ease, the young man found a post.
He twisted to his side and curled into a more comfortable position and there he sat, resting efficiently up in the canopy like panther-lion.
Experience left him without fear of falling.
He surveyed the woods once more and closed his eyes. He'd sense any heat signatures in the area long before they reached him.
The blue spirit readied himself for another sleepless night.
Katara woke to the smell of something delicious cooking.
Sitting up she surveyed her camp. Who could possibly be cooking? A quick glance told her Aang and Socka were still in bed. Even if they were up she doubted they'd ever help with preparing breakfast.
"Woman's work," socka had called it.
A masked man made his way into the clearing carrying edible mushrooms.
Katara nearly jumped out of her skin before remembering this was Aang's savior.
The newest member of the group. Katara stood up and collected herself best she could in the middle of the woods.
"Good morning blue"
He nodded in acknowledgment.
Right, he doesn't talk.
"You made breakfast for us!"
Finally another person to help out around camp. Between his skills in fighting and sneaking around combined with his survival abilities, Katara was positively thrilled to have him join the group.
He can cook!
Katara made herself useful in preparing the dishes for breakfast.
A loud yawn caught her attention.
Socka, her brother, had just woken up.
"I smell food!"
Of course, the only thing that could make Socka want too get up.
Aang woke up as well. Soon the camp was alive with energy.
Socka tore his way out of his sleeping bag to find the source of the wondrous smell.
"This fantastic Katara," Aang chirped.
Katara folded her arms.
"For your information I didn't make it. Blue did."
Socka's eyes just about bulged out of his head.
"What!"
He stared at blue.
",but cooking is woman's work!"
The blue spirit tilted his head in confusion and Katara burst into laughter.
"I think I tastes great," Aang added.
"Me too, and if blue, a man, can help out with the chores than so can you two."
Blue seemed to finally understand and laughed silently.
He grabbed a stick and wrote in the dirt.
Cooking isn't "woman's work" it's a survival skill.
Katara smiled to herself pleased. Socka on the other hand was staring jaw dropped at the writing in the dirt.
"Don't worry Socka, you'll be cooking and sewing in no time."
Blue nodded in agreement not seeming to understand that Katara was mocking her brother.
About time that socka's sexism got put in its place.
Katara had a feeling that having blue around would be the best thing to happen to their little group.
