Evening set into LA as Dawn Summers watched her sister walk out of their two room apartment, leaving her alone to finish her homework for high school.
I should probably tell her to call Willow, maybe they can hang while I'm out patrolling,
This was an ordinary occurrence in her family, Buffy going out at night. She'd been doing since before their mother had died, when she was sixteen and Dawn had been ten. Since they lived in LA after Sunnydale had become a crater, Willow or Xander or Giles would come over just to hang out. Both were busy, but not too busy to not spend time with Buffy and Dawn.
Wonder when Xander gets back from Italy, I'm so happy that he got that construction job on the memorial over there. Lucky, I miss Italy.
Algebra already getting on Dawn's nerves after 5 minutes, she decided to take a TV break. Switching to MTV she grabbed a box of cookies and snacked for and hour or two before finally returning to the forgotten homework.
Stupid vampires, I have a life too. Although it's good for other people that I have not seen a vampire for, like, 5 hours. Wow, its midnight already! Hope that Dawnie's asleep. Oh I think I see one. Oh no it's just some old guy…an old guy that goes into a mausoleum, better check this out.
Finally done with her homework, Dawn stumbled across the entrance to her bedroom. She exhaustedly pulled on a loose gym shirt and pulled on a pair of girl boxers.
These vampires need to work on their pick up lines. Hehe! Okay enough playing around; I need to go into slayer mode.
Lazily, Dawn brushed her teeth, continually nodding off, mid-cleanse. Yawning, she began to turn off all appliances, lights, etc.
Roundhouse kick: Duck: Block: Punch: Punch: Jump
Dawn entered her room again and plopped down on her Queen-sized bed decorated with little ladybugs on an indigo background. Sighing she set her alarm for school the next morning.
Fake Punch: Block: Block; wow this guy is really powerful. Ow! He tripped me!
Oh bother, thought Dawn. She had forgotten to lock the door's second lock and had to once again leave her room and, more importantly, her fluffy bed.
Ow, ow, ow. No! He's got me by my neck.
Finally capable of lying down, Dawn breathed into the pillow. She inhaled the comforting smell of detergent.
It hurts; it didn't hurt this much the last two times I died! Oh no, what will happen to
Dawn?
Giggling softly, Dawn stretched out and fell into a deep snooze.
Blackness is around me.
Dawn woke up in the morning and hastily shut off the alarm, lest she be threatened by Buffy. Oddly enough, Buffy was silent. Dawn assumed that she was sleeping in her room after last night and hurried off to school.
School was oddly tame today, despite Dawn failing her Chem. Honors test. She simply shrugged and went through school in a haze of sleepiness that rivaled her classes slack-off. After school she headed to her friends house to hang out and do homework. She stayed about two hours before stopping by Willow's magic shop. When Dawn asked if Willow had heard from Buffy, she was a little worried that she hadn't, so she quickly went home.
The apartment was empty and Dawn tried to play off her concern that Buffy was still at work (she worked as a consultant for the police). Dawn shrugged and went to view the 2 new messages they had gotten. The first was from Giles, whose message consisted of news from the other slayers who were training in a school set up in Europe. The second message, however, frightened her. It was Buffy's boss; he was asking why she had not come to work that day. Dawn suddenly had a revelation:
Buffy didn't come home last night.
