"God, Robbie, you are the worst male nurse ever!" Ray said as Robbie bandaged Ray's shoulder.
"When did he get to be the nurse? I want to be the nurse," Parker said as she got up from Ray's bed and stood next to the mirror with the two boys. "That's not fair."
Ray was standing sideways in front of the mirror, staring at his right shoulder. It was black and blue, do to continuous bruising, and now, had a clean, white bandage placed across it. He had cut it, accidentally. It wasn't his fault, but he could have stopped it. "Because, Parker," Ray said as he pulled his sleeve back down, "having a male nurse is meant for laughing."
Parker and Ray stopped, stared at each other for a second, and then twisted to face Robbie. They pointed and laughed. Robbie naturally rolled his eyes. "Of course." Robbie flopped onto Ray's bed. "Why didn't you just tell her?"
It was now Ray's turn to roll his eyes. "Like I could tell her. That would be mean, Robbie. Duh."
Parker pushes herself up so she's sitting on Ray's desk. "Couldn't you have just gone, 'Oh, my shoulder's bleeding. Whatever could have caused that?'"
Ray raised his left arm to the injured shoulder. "You guys just don't get it." He rubbed it. "Where'd she get the damned ring anyways?"
Robbie shrugged, but Parker answered. "We went to a vintage store today. She got it there."
Robbie sat up from his position on the bed. "You raided Nanny Haynes closet again, didn't you?
Parker nodded enthusiastically, but Ray's jaw dropped. "I just got cut by your grandmother's ring. I feel like I should be cursed right about now…"
"Ray, say anymore, and your other shoulder will be hurt too," Parker replied then checked her watch. "I have to go. Dinner in half an hour. We're having octopus tonight. Bye!" She finished, then left.
Robbie and Ray exchanged looks. "Dude," Robbie said, "I don't even want to know." He glanced at the time too. "I should go. I promised Kim to take her to some art exhibit today." He rolled his eyes. "I don't know why she insists, but she does. See you later, man." He left too.
And the cheese stands alone, Ray thought. He took a glance at the mirror. Determining that no one was home but him, he cautiously took off his shirt, and looked at his shoulder again in pride. No one could manage a left hook quite like her. He have to make sure though, when she wore a ring again, that there was padding on his arm. That cut stung like hell…but burned in his mind like nothing he ever felt before. The way she giggled after every punch, the twinkle in her eye when he said something stupid, even the teasing in her words when she reprimanded him. He loved her, he was sure, but he just didn't know how or what to say to her. But there was no doubt in his mind that he would never let her wear a ring again. Well, at least not until they were married happily with five children. Hey, it could happen.
He slipped his shirt back on and grabbed his cell phone. He hit a speed dial button, and the other line picked up only after two rings.
"Hello?"
"Hey it's Ray."
"What's up?"
"Well, Lily, I just wanted to talk about your ring. How attached to it are you?…"
