Chapter Fourteen – Beginning of Life

Rory felt her nerves build as she sat in the hospital gown ready to have her next ultrasound. Fortunately, she was able to get some great health care coverage from her mother. Maybe Logan's family could have provided more but being the owner of a successful, magazine-award-winning inn meant that her mother was able to provide for her. However, the fact that Logan was spending so much time in London still was a little depressing.

Despite how Lane had said that Zak would want to be anywhere else than in the room with her and her belly and the jelly to be rubbed over it, Logan had already expressed how he hadn't wanted to miss it. Yes, he had slacked off in the past and not done what his father wanted for him to do but now that he was going to become a father himself, both his attitude and his priorities had changed. As provided for as she was, Rory really missed having a physical presence there.

As she closed her eyes and let her head rest on the pillow she slid a hand over her phone. It was an inconvenient time to make an international call but she felt that just by touching the phone she could get a link with him. It was like in those movies when you suddenly took on technology so you could be right next to someone.

She kept her eyes closed even when she heard a sound at the door but the person stepped forwards and gently pushed her hair back. Rory hummed as she curled into the warm and familiar touch. "Mom?" she asked before looking up to see Lorelei there in front of her. Rory sat up slowly and Lorelei winked.

"I hope you weren't expecting somebody else to touch you that way," Lorelie said and Roy blushed. Yes, there was another person but even with all of the surprises that he made, Rory knew that he had to attend an important meeting. Logan was doing everything that his father wished for him because it meant that after the baby was born, the two could be together. That was more important. Having a family although Rory didn't want to voice that aloud. There were different types of families and there was nothing wrong with how she had been brought up.

"Nope," Rory said before eyeing Lorelei curiously, "Are you upset that I didn't tell you I was attending an appointment?" she asked and Lorelei laughed softly. She gently pushed Rory's hair back again and shook her head.

"I would have been mad if you didn't show me the results of the test. I demand to see my grandchildren," she laughed and that made Rory feel a little bit easier.

"I'm not sure the drinking age for coffee," she joked and Lorelei hummed. She had allowed Rory to explore things early on and that was how the girl had been drinking coffee even in middle school. It hadn't stunted her growth as other people had said but then again, she and Christopher were quite tall as it was. Maybe a little stunting would be good.

"Those are things that you need to learn as a mother," Lorelei smiled and Rory laughed. Her mother always was amazing at knowing just how to comfort her. As the doctor approached her, Rory looked up at the woman who had been extremely kind to her during all of the visits and let her do her job. She looked at her, making eye contact as she reached out for her wrist.

"You heard from Logan?" Rory asked and the doctor nodded.

"Yes," she said with a grin. "Don't worry, he'll have a copy of the video footage. That is quite a good man that you have there. Especially when you're unmarried and you are young, for a man to step in and be by your side shows a really heroic position but that's just my view of things. He's smart, funny, and going to be passing down some very nice genes to the child."

Lorelei hummed, she wasn't sure if she liked the way that everyone talked about Logan as if he was the perfect guy, the perfect man, would be the perfect dad. She had learned enough about the dad-to-be to know that he didn't see himself with the same rose colored glasses that everyone else did. Hopefully he wouldn't allow these people to shape his self-image. As a dad he needed to be critical and to know where his faults were so that he could improve.

Lorelei felt Rory take her hand and she looked to the screen where she could see her grandchild. She smiled as she saw the details of the picture. This was very different from the tests that she had taken and even those she had seemed to be avoiding those since she knew how her mother wanted to take control behind her back.

Rory stared at the screen and she listened as they played the tiny little heartbeat. Her eyes watered with tears and she hoped that Logan would have the same reaction as she did. "They are healthy, right?" Rory asked and the doctor turned to her.

"You have a very healthy baby," she said and then smiled to her, "We could most likely find out the gender of the child on the next visit," she suggested and Rory looked down. She could possibly have Logan there when they found out. She hoped that he would be happy no matter what and that he would love a daughter just as much as a son. He believed in equality and he adored Honor so he probably wouldn't be unhappy with a daughter.

"You know, you can't really discover those things any longer," Lorelei commented and both Rory and the doctor turned to her confused. "I mean, you might think you have a boy and they learn that they are actually female, or you might have a biological girl who plans to add a dick to their body."

"Whoever they are," Rory said as she put a hand on her belly and smiled. "I'm sure that they'll be amazing and I know that both of their parents will love and support them no matter what."

….

….

Rory looked to Lane as they stood in the pharmacy section. It was amazing that they were going through this together because they had been through so much in their lives as friends. They would be raising their children together and giving them happy friendships. Rory knew that she would be trying to bring the families together as much as possible so that they could be part of the same united group.

"So, your mother really doesn't like the fact that I got pregnant, does she?" Rory asked as she picked up some brand name vitamins that were supposed to help with the baby. Lane looked at her and then sighed. She didn't have the money to spend on the items that Logan had requested for Rory to take. Although he had said that he trusted her to make the best decisions for her, because the doctor had written it down, he was nervous if she didn't take it.

"She doesn't mind babies, I think she finds them something to celebrate," Lane said as she rolled her eyes at how overbearing her mother was being since she learned the news. "It's the fact that you and Logan aren't married. See, if I didn't have that weird thing about no sex before marriage I could have been in the same position as you."

Rory nodded. Mrs. Kim had always had reasons to look critically upon her family but she had always been respectful and understanding towards the super-Christian woman. It must be the cultural divide between them but maybe once she did get married to Logan, Mrs. Kim would rethink her position. Rory smiled to Lane, she needed a distraction.

"Have you thought about what things to buy for the nursery?" she asked and Lane laughed weakly.

"Anything that is discounted. Zak and I need to save as much money as possible. It's all about budgeting. Besides, if one baby gets something then we need to get an identical object for the twin and Zak making things for them doesn't seem a safe option in my view." Lane turned to Rory who was shifting uncomfortably. "Listen, I'm not angry that you're in a higher social class or that the wealth's different but you don't need to be planning on which generic diapers are the best."

"Even though I went to Yale," Rory tried to defend herself, "There are a lot of people who I could have met who wouldn't be of the Huntzberger level of wealth. I mean. It's not the wealth that attracts me, it's his aloofness, his spontaneous nature, the way he wants to prove that he loves me." Rory looked to the side and sighed, there were more reasons why she was in love with him but the reasons that she had just said might be cute in a boyfriend but in a husband and father he would have to change. He really did seem willing to do so though. She should have more trust in him and his commitment.

…..

…..

As Logan logged onto the computer early that morning, he was planning on looking over his notes for another meeting with a client but his eyes widened as he saw a message that he had gotten a message from Rory. "Ace, what have you sent me," he said with a soft chuckle before going to the email and paused as he saw that there was a video attachment. He smiled with excitement. This was the sonogram wasn't it? Or the video of what was showing up on the screen.

As it downloaded, he couldn't hide his excitement. Despite having access to a lot of videos that he might want to see including movie premiers there wasn't another video he had wanted to see more in his whole life. As it loaded and he opened it to see the screen with the baby-to-be and heard the heartbeat he felt tears in his eyes and put a hand over his mouth glad that nobody else could see him in this position.

"Thanks, Ace. I'll be with you two before you know it," he said as he bowed his head. As the video finished, he put it back to the beginning. He just couldn't keep himself from watching it.
