AN: Sorry to insult anyone, I really cannot stand A Year in the Life when comparing it to the seasons of Gilmore Girls but then, unlike one of the managers at my work, I'm a Logan fan 😉
Chapter Fifteen - Daddy
You are what you eat.
That was a very popular adage which was not beyond Rory's notice as she slumped on the sofa of her mother's house. This for right now was what she could call home but she still wished to be with Logan. The house that she would be with her new family in was decorated well enough so that she could actually stay there instead but it would be lonely to just go home to an empty and unfamiliar house. Still, as she ate food she wouldn't have had problems with before, she kept thinking of how large she was getting and this baby in her stomach.
"You order the pizza?" Lorelei called out and Rory laughed.
"As well as the Chinese, the Mexican, the weird food from Al's," she said and saw her mother bouncing towards the front door. That was something that made Rory enjoy being at home. Her mother didn't seem to be angry at her for becoming pregnant before graduating from college, she seemed excited and supportive and okay, maybe a little overly concerned about how Rory was going to exactly finish her journalism degree but they had time to figure that out.
"Ten bucks that it's the…" Lorelei moved her head to the side trying to see who was on the other side of the door, "blond, Finnish? No. I'm guessing pizza," she said to her and Rory nodded.
"Okay. I'll take your bet, anything else but pizza though and you know where your money is going?" Rory joked back and Lorelei winked.
"Gotta keep ya on that drinking binge, hun," she said playfully before going to the front door and opening it. She paused as she saw the very exhausted looking youthful adult standing in front of her with a shopping bag and two bouquets of flowers. He definitely looked like he was working a lot harder than the other times she had seen him. She kind of liked the way he looked like he needed coffee and that he had a few papercuts on his fingers.
"Hi, Daddy," Lorelei teased as Logan blinked from the brightness of removing his sunglasses. "You need to have some coffee or something?"
"Yeah," Logan chuckled, "Is Rory here?" he asked and Lorelei raised an eyebrow.
"Do I get to keep whatever's in that bag if I say no," she teased him and he took out a box of expensive chocolates before handing it to her and then also one of the bouquets of flowers.
"Of course I got the grandmother a present, what type of future son-in-law would I be if I didn't," he said with that charming smile of his and this time Lorelei didn't feel an ounce of grease about it. She smiled and opened the door for him.
"Rory!" she called out happily, "Special delivery!"
"Special?" Rory asked as she stood up from the sofa and went to see who was at the door. Her smile spread out wide over her face as she saw the man that she loves, the father to her child standing there. He definitely looked like he hadn't slept on the plane and she would have to persuade him to get some sleep or at least coffee, although that caffeine was particularly tempting to her so maybe not too much coffee. She couldn't think too much about that because before she knew it, she had run over and thrown her arms around him and he was chuckling back, hugging her in return.
"Yes," she said as she kissed him and let her forehead rest on his shoulder, "You're here. You're here and I'm probably making a fool of myself being one of those girls who don't know what to say, don't know how to act, other than making a fawning fool out of myself."
"A fawning fool," Logan said as he repeated those words. He saw Rory take a step back and give him a look over whether to argue with him or wait, Logan shook his head. "Ace, you can be as much of a fool as you'd like and I'll still be here to love you. I'm the one who most likely looks pretty foolish. As soon as my father gave me the okay to take the weekend off, I was on the first flight here."
"And you didn't tell me," Rory said with a light slap. "I would have met you from the -"
"I had a driver who could do that, besides, I was hoping that maybe me getting off of a plane wouldn't be the first thing that you wanted to see. I thought that I would get flowers, straighten myself out a bit, and then I just couldn't stop being ecstatic that I got to see you," he said and Rory grinned as she took her own chocolates and flowers. The way that he was treating her mother as well really was something that mattered to her. Logan understood that Lorelei didn't like him that much, he had been a bad influence apparently on her, but she had put that aside because he was the father of her grandchild. He was making steps forward and including her, she wanted to do the same for him.
"I would have wanted to do that but yes, surprises and grand gestures are your specialty," Rory kissed him and Logan coughed.
"Well with child-"
"When our child is born, the only grand gestures will be ones that are planned and safe," he tried to assure Lorelei. "Young children need love and support and consistency. I plan to give my children not only a loving home but also a dependable father and to do that I have a lot of lessons that need to be learned but I'm doing my best."
"I appreciate that," Lorelei nodded and saw Logan yawn and push his hair back. She bit her top lip to keep herself from laughing at the way he looked exhausted and as if he had been rocking out all night at some concert. "Can I get you something to eat, somewhere to sleep."
Logan shook his head, forcing himself to not yawn and Rory watched him in concern. "Sorry, no, I should be fine. I'm fine," he told them and Lorelei crossed her arms over her chest.
"Your father is working you pretty hard, I bet," she told him and Logan remained quiet. "And he's going to be a grandfather too so I'm sure that he's been helping you and extending offers to help the baby and…"
"And he still is letting me make my own decisions, most of them," Logan said before almost slipping over.
"What I'm saying is that you've obviously been putting in all of this work with the benefit being a good family life for the three of you and you are welcome to take a nap and get some rest in this house. We'll even try to keep the sound down on the TV so stop being a poised gentleman as you've been trained to be and get some sleep," Lorelei told him and Logan grinned with a chuckle.
"I'll take you up on that," he nodded and Rory ruffled his hair a little hearing his soft moan before she motioned for him to come to her old bedroom and to get some rest. She looked back at her mother who nodded to her and then sat down on the side of the bed as he slumped on top of it.
"Did you want to get changed before you -" she said before hearing his snores. He had really just come into the room and passed out from how exhausted he was. Rory watched him sleeping and slowly moved so her body was curled into his. She felt him wrap an arm around her.
"Rory," he said in his sleep and Rory kissed his lips, her eyes not leaving his face. He probably pushed himself over his limits to be here with her but what mattered was that he was here with her. She put a hand over her belly and then put her other hand to his cheek. He grinned in his sleep and that made Rory smile too. There was a connection here between the three of them.
When she was a child, she would get so excited to hear that her father was going to come and visit them. She knew that her dad had his own life which was separate from theirs and she often didn't feel included. As much as Rory didn't want for their child to have a bad relationship with Mitchum Huntzberger, there would have to be some kind of interaction between the two and she needed Logan's help to be there. What she wanted to see most though was Logan holding their baby in his arms, rocking them gently, giving them the milk they would need, talking to them. She wanted to see Logan as a father. They would be young parents but not the youngest, not like her mother. Right now it seemed a good time to have a baby but maybe that was just because she wanted to have this bond with the man opposite her.
"Logan," she smiled and heard him acknowledge her with a soft hum. "Are you excited to be a father?" she asked and he wrapped his arm around her more, pulling him into her.
"As long as you're the mother, Ace," he laughed before gently placing his hand on her belly. Rory very gently held his hand from the back of it and kept it pressed against her skin. She smiled at him. She was proud of him for how hard he had been working and how he hadn't run away from her but was actually fighting and standing up to this unexpected challenge.
Most of all though, she was proud to be them, proud that she had found a man who made her want to give birth to her child. She wanted this happy family scenario and she would fight if needed to protect it.
