Chapter Twenty One – Sisters

"This house is enormous compared to where I'm living," Lane said as she looked around the new house where Rory and Logan were staying. It had become well furnished in most of the rooms – or at least the rooms they would be using daily – but there were still some empty spaces. She had wanted to put together the nursery for the child but she knew that Logan also wanted to help with that. She hadn't decided whether or not she wanted to know the sex of their baby before they were born. Even if she did, that shouldn't matter. Boys didn't have to have blue. Boys could have pinks. It was supposed to be a free country with independent thought after all.

"It is rather big but we wanted a place where the child could grow up we-" Rory said before looking at Lane. Her friend was also pregnant with a baby but she was living in a smaller residence due to her wanting to pursue her life in the band. "Lane, I'm sorry. I wasn't thinking."

"Hey, it's okay," Lane replied trying to make sure Rory knew she wasn't taking offense. "You are a Yale student who wants to go into journalism, I took the more…artistic route. I followed my passion…a different passion to what you have."

"I think that we both are trying to live out our dreams," Rory smiled happily. "Remember, you are the pro at music. I will always refer to your judgment, sensei."

"Very good," Lane smiled. "I think Zack wants to fill the house with music and laughter. He's still panicking from time to time," she commented with a smile and Rory nodded. "How is Logan dealing with this? I'm sure that a party boy like him is having -"

"Logan has been very supportive," Rory replied as she thought about the man who would be the father to their child and who she knew she would marry. Logan had had some unfaithful times and he had tried to bribe her into her forgiving him but she had a strong belief that those times were out of his system. "He has to finish off his work in the UK before he's here full-time but he's…"

"He's not panicked at all?" Lane asked and Rory smiled.

"I think he's uneasy but it's not as if becoming a father is an easy task. I think he and Zack will both be excellent dads." Rory put a hand on her belly. She hadn't asked Logan this but she knew that if he disagreed with this, she would have an argument with him. The times when he had been around Lane, he had always shown her respect and they had had long talks about bands and music and she had teased him saying that he must have had a string quartet there for every birthday playing classical music. He had replied that he should book the band for any future birthdays he had. Logan was supportive, more supportive than she had given him credit for.

"Lane," she smiled as she turned to the girl who was more like a sister to her than a friend. "I know that my grandparents would feel shocked if I wasn't to have the baby baptized…"

"Not as much as my mother," Lane interjected making Rory smile. There was nobody who she knew who was into the Christian religion as much as Mrs. Kim. She didn't know whether Lane would follow her wishes or rebel. It was up to her.

"True," Rory nodded. "We're not going to send the child to any weird religious school or camp or anything…unless they really want to go."

"Maybe they'll learn to know Jesus is a friend of theirs, he's a friend to everyone," Lane replied with some sarcasm in her voice. Rory smiled. "I mean, as long as they are not being indoctrinated into a cult. I don't think I could bear it if my child wanted to sing hymns all day. That's why I need to play as much decent music as I can before they are born."

Rory nodded, "Will you be godmother?" she asked and Lane smiled, taking a step backwards before nodding.

"Only if you'll do me the honor of being godmother right back to my own kids," she smiled and Rory nodded. Lane hugged her close. "Of course I want to," she replied. They both held onto one another but as they broke away, Rory took hold of Lane's hand in her own. "Come, I want to show you the room that's going to be Logan's office. I want to surprise him with something."

Lane followed her along. She didn't mention how strange it was to be discussing a home office. Her home didn't even have room for Brian to stay there any longer. If they had home offices and guest rooms, she would feel as if she were living in luxury. The difference between her and her friend seemed amplified by this house but she knew that they would continue to be best friends.

Rory showed her a nearly empty room, there was a desk, a top of the line computer, a comfortable chair, and an empty bookcase. "This is where Logan will be working from home. I thought that since he will be away for a couple more weeks, I'd surprise him with redecorating."

"And you'd like my help with it?" Lane asked and Rory nodded.

Lane took a step into the office until she was standing right in the center of it. Of course she could come up with ideas. She could think of a theme or at least a color palette but she did feel a little jealous with the idea that Logan would have something so great when she couldn't even afford to buy name brand items from Dosey's.

"Tell me a little bit more about Logan and I'll be able to do it," she winked and Rory nodded. She felt glad that Lane was here. She had the feeling that unless she made it over-the-top feminine, Logan would be happy with whatever she chose but she wanted him to feel grounded here. She paused. She wasn't worried about him, right? He had shown her time and time again that she could rely on him. Why would she have difficulty at this point?

Logan stretched backwards as he saved the forms he had been working on for the company. Although he was pleased that his father had told him that he could go and live with Rory and their child in only a few short weeks, he was still nervous about that. It wasn't going back to the US, he was excited for that part but it was living up to the expectations of being a father. He didn't want to screw it up. He didn't want his child to ever feel unwanted as he had when younger.

He heard a knock on the door and pushed the top of his laptop down so that the information wouldn't be leaked. He stood and went to the door. "Hello," he said, expecting to see one of the men on his level in the company, instead he saw a woman who made him feel very excited.

"Honor!" he said as she walked over to him and hugged him.

"Hey, little brother," she winked before taking a step back and held onto his hand. "How are you? How's Rory? How's the baby?"

"I think we're all good," Logan said before Honor flicked his forehead. He put a hand to where she had flicked him, he hadn't been expecting that. He blinked before frowning. "What was that for?"

"I haven't heard very much about my future niece or nephew and I am practically dying to hear what is happening. I hope I don't have to fly out to confront you each time I have a question about your child." Honor told him. "So, when are you going to hurry up and propose to Rory. I know you love her and you can't do better than her if that's what you're waiting around for."

"Well…" Logan said as he looked away. He knew that they had wanted to keep it a secret so that he could do it as if asking her grandparents and parents for advice but he considered himself engaged already even if only he and Rory knew about it.

"You did it already?" Honor grinned, "That's great. I mean, you should have told me when it happened but that's fantastic. You better treat that girl right. I am upset that I didn't know, you should have told me, but it's great how you two are going to get married. I hope it's before the baby."

"I did it privately, we're going to pretend to do it publicly so don't tell anyone, Honor," Logan replied and Honor smiled before putting a finger to her lips telling her little brother that she would of course keep their secret.

"Grandfather's not going to like this," Honor commented and Logan scoffed and rolled his eyes.

"So what…do I have to be a trained puppy all the time, doing whatever I'm told. No one told me to get Rory pregnant but it happened. Grandfather wouldn't be happy that Rory still wants to work rather than being a wife and mother full time."

"Good," Honor replied. "I'd hate to see Rory lose that independence, I don't think that I could forgive you if I didn't see that fire in her anymore."

"How's Josh?" Logan asked, changing the subject.

"Working. He's working a lot. He's already in the family and yet he's still attempting to prove his worth. Sometimes I really can't stand our family, Logan," she said. Honor reflected on those words and placed a comforting hand on Logan's shoulder. "Well, except you and Rory. You do happen to be my favorite member of our family. Just make sure to be a better father than Dad is."

"Thanks," Logan smiled. "Same to you, Honor. I'll try to be better than Dad. He wasn't much of a father to either of us, was he?"

"Don't worry," Honor laughed. "I trust that you'll be better, no I know that you'll be better. I'll only be disappointed if you don't allow me to babysit your child. I want to be there when my niece or nephew is a baby. I want to be the cool aunt, you know, the type of aunt that a kid's proud of."

Logan laughed, "You'll definitely be their favorite aunt."

"Yeah, their only aunt," Honor replied. She looked to her brother, "I'm proud of you for how you're taking this although I might have found the situation a little more humorous had you been freaking out." She looked to Logan who nodded. He was panicking inside but it was good that it wasn't shown on the outside. How could he not be panicking about becoming a father, of bringing life into this world that he had responsibility over. He just hoped that if this was a charade, it wouldn't fail for him. He didn't want to let Rory down.
