Chapter Forty – Websites and Worries

Logan grinned to himself as he sat back in the chair in his home office. He had finished half of the work for his father's company for the day and had been doing some work on a side project which he hoped Rory would love. At least it was better than the surprise his mother had given the two of them by inviting Rory to meet up with her whilst telling Logan that he didn't need to come. Whatever Shera was planning needed to be prepared for.

"Ace!" Logan said as he stood up and came out of the office looking around for his fiancée. He listened to the sound of public radio and walked over to her to see she was playing it on her computer whilst organizing books for her journalism classes. She always impressed him with how hard she worked. He had always been able to slack off and still turn in something great but she prepared for it, she went over it in her head a few dozen times, and then when it was put onto paper there were edits and reedits and things he hadn't committed himself to.

"You want to blow off this thing with my mother? We can get some Chinese food and watch some movie that too many people hate on," he told her and Rory sighed.

"I don't have that much time and if it's important to your mother then…." Rory argued and turned to Logan who had zero excitement on his face.

"Rory, my mother would be interested in gold napkin rings more than she would be interested in anything that mattered. I don't know why I can't go to these things, I mean, it wouldn't be top of my list but we would be a united front," he sighed as he closed his eyes. Hopefully things were going to be better with Paris than they had been before. He knew she still wanted him to prove that he was going to be staying around for Rory and their son so that would mean that he would be accepted by her when they celebrated his fifth birthday.

"Well do you think you have a few minutes to allow me to show you something in the office?" he asked and Rory pressed pause on the radio station before pushing herself up. It was harder than expected gaining this weight and she kept feeling anxious about the clothes she was wearing but if that meant their little boy was healthy then that was a good sign. She grinned to Logan as he came over to help her but managed to get up herself.

"Okay but if it's a game of Russian roulette, I will most definitely have to pass," she said and Logan rolled his eyes before kissing her cheek.

"Why would I ever put your life in danger like that, Ace?" he asked her before bringing her to the computer. "I set you up a professional website," he showed her and Rory looked over it. "It's just templates right now and we can fix it up however you'd like but I know you were trying to figure out the best path for your journalism and maybe this is an option."

Rory looked over the website and the amount of work that Logan had put in in creating it, getting the domain registered, protecting it from cyber attacks and hugged him. Even if she was forced to attend classes remotely and not work whilst she was pregnant, this was a way of proving her name and ultimately her worth to the public.

"Thank you," she said as she took the mouse and clicked through it. "I can't wait to set it up," she said and Logan slowly took the mouse away from her before going to a website that he had created for personal use and it showed him, Rory, and their baby.

"I wanted to make this one too for our family even if it is only used between us," he said and Rory glanced over it. Logan was really excited about his son being born and this site proved it. No matter what people like Paris might say, Rory knew the love that Logan had for their unborn child and the fear that he would become just like his father and they would start to fear him. She kissed him again before saying the words which they both needed him to hear.

"You're going to be an excellent father, Logan."

Something wasn't feeling right to Rory. It wasn't an impulse that something shouldn't be or an impulse to do something big and reckless such as stealing a boat but there was something that wasn't weighing on either her body or her mind correctly. She took a deep breath in as she arrived at the location where Sheera was preparing the event and suddenly she felt a huge wave of relief as she spotted Honor there waiting for her.

"H-Hi," she waved as she got out of the taxi and paid the driver. "Thank you," she said to him before coming up to her future sister-in-law. "I'm really happy to see you," Rory told her and Honor nodded before wrapping her up in her arms.

"Trust me, you don't want to go in feeling defenseless," she laughed before looking around the area. "I was really hoping to see that brother of mine," she admitted before shrugging. "Well, his loss is my gain as I'm sure we can have some fun, right?" she asked.

Rory smiled, "I'm expecting this to be the sort of fun that my grandmother likes to have…or that any of the DAR members had really," she said and Honor laughed.

"I'm amazed that you spent so much time there. I could become a member myself but that sort of thing really doesn't impress me, I'd rather spend my time doing things which are more fun, more laid back, more -"

"Cooler?" Rory guessed and Honor nodded.

"Well, yes, of course. I mean, I can put Josh in a nice tux and tell him the cause of the event and he'll do outstanding, very presentable, a leader of men if I can say that myself, but it's not what we'd choose to do with our free time. That art show was much more of our style. I have to recommend some places for Logan to take you when you're able to travel freely again," Honor said excitedly and Rory nodded along. At least with Honor here she did have someone to back her up and guide her. As much as she was able to navigate the type of world her grandmother lived within, she hadn't been brought up in that fashion.

Still, something felt wrong and different. Rory patted down her pockets and checked her bag but it wasn't as if she was missing anything or had misplaced anything, she was just…feeling off.

"Are you okay?" Honor asked as she looked Rory over and the younger woman nodded. "All right. I'll be right here, these events can be painful but Ill be here to support you and once it's over, how about if we do something fun before I go and take you home to my anxious younger brother. Trust me, Logan cares more about the two of you than anything else in his life which is very refreshing to see."

"Thanks, Honor," Rory told her before placing a hand on her belly. "I'll be okay."

"You're just a little nervous about the pregnancy?" Honor guessed before looking around. "Trust me, I don't think that anyone knows. It's not as obvious as you might think and we're here, well physically I'm here but Logan is just on the other side of a phone call."

Rory smiled again as she looked around and Honor led her over to where Shira was. "Mother, if you're ready then we're here to go over everything," she said and Shira looked over Rory before humming.

"You don't look well," she stated and Rory felt a slight pain in her chest. "Makeup. You really need someone to help you with that. I would have expected Emily to have been able to teach you what is required for polite society because your mother will slap on anything flashy."

"Could we perhaps not talk about my mother," Rory asked and Shira nodded without giving an apology.

"Very well. As you can see this room is very spacious, there will of course be buffet tables, room for dancing in one of the adjoining rooms and tables, I think we could do a couple hundred guests at least," she fantasized but as she continued talking, Rory felt more pain through her body. She tried to think over whether she had taken all the pills and necessary vitamins or what could be causing her body to hurt so much.

She felt some kind of tightness in her belly and then a release. It was uncomfortable but not excessively painful. It still felt weird though. "Honor," she whispered to her future sister-in-law. "I need to sit down, is there somewhere I can si—" she clenched her jaw as another rush of clenching and unclenching happened.

"Okay. We are postponing this and I am taking you to the doctor right now," Honor said before turning to Shira who waved it off.

"It's just nerves. I was nervous about all of the big celebrations in my honor but I knew that people were doing this for me, I knew that I had to grin and bear it. Maybe you just need some new clothes," she told Rory and Honor glared at her mother before taking Rory by the arm.

"Mother, I will pay for the expenses that this might cost and I'm sure that Rory and Logan would be happy with whatever you plan on doing but I am taking my future sister to the doctor." Before Rory had a chance to argue, Honor had pulled her out of the location and to a bench to sit down. "I have my car but is it feeling any better in the fresh air?" she asked and Rory shook her head.

"I don't know…what's happening," she said before looking nervously at Honor, "They say that sometimes a miscarriage can feel like labor or like something's hurting," she said and Honor's eyes widened as she imagined Logan having to go through that.

"I would say that my mother has this effect on everyone but I think we need to go to a doctor for a checkup," Honor said as she sat watching Rory.

Rory looked back at the location and shook her head, "Honor, I'm fine. I'll be able to go ba-" she closed her eyes again with her hand resting on her belly. "It doesn't hurt. It's just strange."

"Rory, what would my brother do or say if he saw you in this way because Logan loves you. He doesn't care about a party or an event so I think we should make sure you get checked over by a doctor. I'll call him on the way and he might even beat us there," Honor tried to persuade her and Rory looked up at her guiltily.

"I don't want him to stop his work because he's worried about me," she whispered and Honor shook his head.

"Logan's hair is too perfect and golden and styled, it'd be nice if there were some grays that started to appear," she said before leading Rory to the parking garage and not saying another word to Shira.
