Chapter Forty Three – Calculating the Future
43.1
Logan sighed as he watched Paris walking around the guest room and pacing back and forth. He knew he wasn't the best person for Paris right now. He didn't want to think that the very driven girl actually hated him but he knew for sure that he wasn't even her top fifty list of people she'd want to spend a night with.
"Anything that I can do for you?" he asked as he rubbed his upper back. That was the hospitable thing if he had someone in his house, for him to make sure that they had what they needed. However, he wasn't even sure what Paris needed. Rory would be so much better at this than he was.
"What do you think?" Paris asked before testing the bed, "The mattress seems good enough for one night," she said and Logan sighed before yawning. "Are you absolutely certain that Rory won't be back tonight?"
"She won't be back tonight. Hopefully she'll be back before lunch tomorrow but she's spending the night in Stars Hollow and depending on how she feels or if she does something with her parents or something…" he said and Pairs raised an eyebrow.
"Shouldn't you be more worried about your child since you went to the hospital. That's not exactly the fatherly thing to do. Couldn't you go with her or can't you tell her to stay here, actually that last one, I don't want to imagine Rory being in that type of relationship. A woman should be independent." Paris stated and Logan stared at her.
"Did Rory tell you about th-" he began but Paris cut him off.
"No, Rory didn't tell me which she should have done as her best friend. I can't believe that she'd give you more information than me but I suppose you are the boy's natural father and the hospital staff do have to give you information on the health and well being of the child," Paris stated as Logan coughed in surprise. Had she actually said that to him?
"I am engaged to Rory. We're going to get married. We are both going to raise our child in this house," Logan told her as Paris looked around.
"You don't seem to have done much in the way of babyproofing this house, Huntzberger," she said and again Logan sat there, completely caught off guard by her. There weren't many people who treated him the way that Paris did. As nice as it felt to see a change from people bending over backwards for him, he didn't know how to even start having an equal footed interaction with her.
"There's still time," Logan said before looking around the room. "So, you can stay here in this room, Paris, I don't mind if you just want to get some rest and wait for Rory. There's some non alcoholic drinks and snacks in the kitchen so help yourself to those. I'm going to try to get some work done since Ace is out tonight."
Paris looked at him before sighing and looked up. "You have a doctor for the boy, right?" she asked and Logan nodded. "So, you know all about birthing data and things about fertility. I never really did pay it that much attention when I was looking into going for a medical degree," she said and Logan frowned as he looked at her but pulled out a chair and sat down on it. He only really wanted Paris to have a good opinion of him because of how important she was to Rory, if this had just been any other person critical of him then he wouldn't care what they thought. He knew that he wasn't everyone's preferred person but he wasn't going to let Rory get hurt because of him.
"I don't really talk about that but yes, we have a doctor," he said before sighing and looking up. "Don't tell me that you're looking for a doctor who will tell you how to get pregnant. Yes, it can happen like that but I wouldn't recom-"
"If you don't plan for the future then you have already fallen behind," Paris told him and Logan nodded slowly. "I don't want to ruin my years in university by taking care of a child but I think that it would be time efficient if I were to plan to have twins. That would only mean being pregnant once to have two children and I am sure that there are drugs that I can take to obtain that outcome."
"Okay. That's beyond risky," Logan said as he looked at Paris as if she had just said that as a joke although they both knew that she was completely serious about it. "There may have been drugs or fertility studies that say that a baby is more likely to have a twin if certain conditions are there but then you get into birth defects and Rory would tell you that it doesn't work like that."
"So you're the kind of guy who believes that you can stick it in a woman and nine months later see how many babies fall out of her?" Paris asked and Logan stared at her incredulously.
"Yes. That's how It's supposed to happen," he said slowly and Paris sighed before rolling her eyes.
"When will men learn," she commented and Logan continued to stare at her. Maybe it was because he was becoming a father far earlier than he had predicted but thoughts of how to create multiple infants at once had never once entered his thoughts before that night.

Rory hadn't been able to get comfortable in her old room with her old bed and though her parents had assured her that they were going to find a bigger and better place outside of Stars Hollow whilst keeping this old house in their name as well, she found it hard to be there whilst pregnant. For some reason she had had a dream about Dean who she hadn't seen for a long time and then she had seen him and Logan fighting over something she couldn't quite remember.
Whatever the dream was though, it had made it incredibly hard for her to get to sleep. So she had come out of her bedroom and walked into the living room to find her father there looking at a photo album. She very quietly walked over to him and took a seat next to him.
Her grandparents always knew how to use words as weapons and that had been one of the reasons why her mother had tried to make a gap between her and them. She hadn't wanted Rory to be hurt like she had but they treated her better than they had their own daughter. She sighed as she looked at her father as Christopher acknowledged her with a smile.
"Couldn't sleep?" he asked her and Rory put a hand over her belly.
"Some nights are more uncomfortable than others," she said before looking at the photos and turned to look at her father. She could still remember his absences and how hard it was when he left for both herself and her mother. She could still remember when he had trouble buying things for her and now he had money and he wanted to use it to take care of them.
"Logan is a good guy," Christopher nodded and Rory smiled and looked away.
"I like to think so," she said before closing her eyes. "Don't misunderstand me. I love Mom so much. I would very quickly jump to defend her in nearly any situation but I think that what she did really didn't give you many chances and I'm sorry. I'm glad that Logan is going to be there but I think it's a two person decision and I don't want to think that I'd take this child away from him."
"I could have fought more," Christopher said as he looked at pictures of Rory as an infant. "I could have argued more, really told Lorelai how things would be best but I didn't want to become someone else that she hated and when she gave birth, when she went into labor, I wasn't there for her and I hate that. I wanted to be there so badly and I know I was a rich, arrogant, spoiled kid but - I'm sorry if I messed anything up for you."
Rory sighed, "I'm glad that you're my father," she told him. "And anything that seems messed up can be fixed. Maybe the two of you could have another child and maybe it would be one of those messed up families where the nephew's actually older than their aunt or uncle but when hasn't life been messy?"
"You think your mother would go for that idea?" Christopher asked and Rory smiled.
"You should find the right time to ask her and I think that she'd be interested in it but that time isn't tonight," she joked and Christopher smiled and nodded. "I'm going to get myself some warm milk. Do you want anything?" she offered and Chris stood.
"Actually, why don't you sit. I'm going to be the one taking care of you for once," he said before they both heard the door being blown by the wind. Christopher turned his head to look at it. He hadn't thought that it wasn't closed, was the wind that strong.
"Nyyyyaaaah," came a strange sound and Rory and Christopher gave each other a confused look before they saw there to be a lump behind the sofa and Rory could hear Babette from across the street. She smiled before going towards the cat. There had to be some backstory here about the cat and what the cat's name is and how old the cat was and it just reminded Rory of all the time she had spent with the residents of Stars Hollow.
Still, as she thought it over, she realized how much things were changing and how different she was. She didn't know how it would come out to say it but she honestly felt as if she could be outgrowing her past and ready to move on to being a mother and maybe Logan wouldn't object to getting a dog. She scooped the tiny bundle up and went to deliver him home.
She could see Babette's excitement at seeing the cat in her arms and thought to herself. How would Logan look when he was finally able to hold their son for the first time?
