Chapter 2

"Boop!"

Floating upside-down, Kayla poked through the nose of, and then grinned at, her assignment stealthily creeping down an alleyway, utterly oblivious to her presence. There were daggers in their sleeves, daggers at their hips, daggers in their boots...being frank, maybe they'd have been better off to say they were wearing daggers with leather attached, instead of the other way around. Regardless of their love for small weaponry, it didn't matter to her. A few steps more, and from out of nowhere, a hail of crossbow bolts pummelled the figure, apparently leaving them for dead as they fell down.

After a few seconds, those who shot the bolts moved out to secure their kill, only for her target to miraculously revive and begin to slice apart those who had attacked them. They then charged towards those who hadn't approached, carving them apart mercilessly and ignoring their attacks. "Seriously, fuck this quest." They muttered, yanking out the bolts that had struck their clothing and gotten stuck. "Fucking ROB."

Grinning, Kayla drifted so she was face-to-face with her target, admiring his face for a second as he was utterly unaware of her presence. This particular person had chosen to be given a 'game system', a fairly common request among human reincarnates from a relatively large span of human technological eras, and had also, as they had enough 'value' built up, requested not to have their memories reset, something completely within the bounds of reasonability, since it only affected them.

That did mean she had to deal with his constant references to her as a 'Random Omnipresent Being', which was...sort of true, she wasn't random after all, but still close enough. His constant comments, his wheedling and requests, certainly made up for it, especially the moments where she could fuck him over. Speaking of which..."Twelve assassins remaining." The menu he had chimed in, prompting a string of curses that widened her grin just as a throwing knife flew towards him.

He took it the same way he took the crossbow bolts, relying on his utterly obscene 'game build' to survive, which consisted of him throwing every single point into endurance and literally bulldozing his way through enemies. The guy literally could take a sledgehammer to the head from a goliant and shrug it off, so crossbows and throwing knives did next to nothing to him, just damaging his clothes. He charged towards that assassin and got led around by the nose for a few minutes before through the application of oil, rope, a piece of cloth and a stinky boot he was able to bait the assassin into range so he could kill him. "Thirteen assassins remaining."

The swearing he unleashed almost brought her to tears from cackling.

"Suiton: Suidan no Jutsu!"

Eyeing the fight going on beneath herself, Kayla found herself wondering exactly why her current assignment wanted to go to this place so badly. The place was hellish by human standards, with constant wars, child soldiers and no dental plans to be found! And yet, when they were asked what they would like to do, they had adamantly declared that they wanted to go to this universe.

That of course meant they ended up as an utterly forgettable grunt in the middle of a vicious war, doing practically anything to survive. Why, they had even been forced to turn to cannibalizing the corpse of their dead comrade once the food ran out and they were still trapped behind enemy lines. And now they were once again in the middle of a fight that she would have expected to see in a bonafide war-world.

As they had a hole blasted through their chest and fell down, dying with clear regrets on their face, Kayla shook herself, resigned to never understand humans.

"Oh, you'll like this one!"

Planting her head in her hands, Kayla stared at the face of Kami as he peeked through the door almost sheepishly. "Seriously? I just got back from spending thirteen years as a fish, and you're sending me out again already? I haven't even had time to put on my slippers and tie my hair back and you already have another fuck-up that needs my attention?" He shrugged helplessly, appearing a document out of nothingness above her desk and allowing it to flop down.

"Okay thanks bye!" He said as he retreated, lest she throw his favourite mug at him in revenge.

I know, short, but I wanted to take a break from writing the first chapters of the newest Akari story, so I came here and wrote this in like...err, half an hour at most?

I might try to add little short-stories, 500-word pieces of garbage that nobody is going to read occasionally at least ^.^
