Chapter Eight: Finding Elijah
In the days after Elijah vanished, Kiara spent more time with the Martins. Mainly trying to help come up with a plan B to get Greta back. Just in case Elijah didn't return in time. She kinda felt like she owed them after they helped her. Even if Elijah made them.
Besides if anything happened to them or they decided to undo the cloaking spell, she and Holly would be screwed. So it was in her best interest to stay on their good side and keep them alive. She told herself that she could use all the friends she could get. After all, Klaus promised to get revenge on her for helping Elijah. If Elijah didn't return, she had a feeling all of Klaus's rage would be directed at her and those she cared for.
It was awkward between her and Luka at first. He had said some pretty hurtful things the night Elijah went missing, but he surprised her one day and apologized for it. He claimed that he didn't even believe what he said, only that he was upset and wanted to hurt her and that he was sorry. And Kiara decided to forgive him.
Jonas told her what Bonnie did. How she drugged Luka and did a spell to force him to tell her things, things that Elijah wouldn't want her and her friends to know. It made sense that Luka had been stressed out. Jonas was worried that Elijah would be angry with Luka so he took Bonnie's powers as punishment. This meant that Bonnie would have to try to make nice with him eventually if she wanted to get her powers back. It was just a matter of time.
In the meantime, they planned.
"Even if we were to find the witch's burial ground, we still need Elijah to kill Klaus," Jonas told her.
"Are you sure Klaus has to die?" asked Kiara.
"It's the only way we can save Greta," Luka said.
"Why?"
"He's forced witches to work for him for years—"
"To find a way to break the curse without the doppelganger, right?" Kiara asked. The two witches stared at her. "You can't kill him without him breaking the curse first, but he won't need Greta anymore once he breaks the curse… so what's the problem?"
"So what, you think he'll just let her go?" Jonas shook his head. "This is Klaus Mikaelson we're talking about."
Kiara lifted a shoulder. "I'm just saying, maybe once he's broken the curse and he doesn't need her anymore, she'll be free to go."
"I'm not willing to bet my daughter on a maybe."
"We're talking about killing someone," said Kiara. "Don't you think you should consider all your options?"
"Klaus isn't someone," Luka shook his head. "There are no negotiations, no peace talks, no forgiveness coming from this man. He's a monster. We'd be doing the world a favor by killing him."
She didn't argue. She knew that she would be better off with Klaus dead. One less monster lurking around the corner for her to worry about. But the word monster echoed in her head for days after that. Especially as she fed on strangers wandering out of bars late at night in neighboring towns. She knew she needed to build her strength if she was going to have any chance of making it through the next coming events so she started feeding more often. She couldn't help but wonder how the Martins saw her. She was a succubus, after all. A monster by definition. It was possible that they thought that the world would be better off without her too. And Kiara wasn't entirely sure if they would be wrong to think so.
As she walked the halls in school, she wondered if it was possible that she actually had more in common with Klaus than she did with the teenagers passing her by. She knew one thing for certain, he hadn't always been a monster. At what point did Klaus lose his humanity? If she was truly immortal, was it inevitable that she would end up like him? The villain of someone else's story. Can such a person ever find their humanity again? If not, Kiara would find herself on the run once more regardless if her father found her or not. This time from someone much more terrifying.
"Hey, Kiara?" Bonnie asked, coming up to her as she closed her locker. "Can I talk to you?"
Kiara glanced at her with impassive eyes. The witch's thumbs were tucked under the straps of her backpack. Her mouth pressed into a tense smile.
"Sure."
"Okay…" Bonnie said. "You're, uh, you're friends with Luka, right?"
"I don't know if I'd say we're friends exactly, but I know him, yeah."
Bonnie pushed her eyebrows together. "Right, well, I've seen you talking to him around town and I was hoping you might be willing to help me?"
"Help you, how?"
"Can you get him to call me?" she asked with hopeful eyes. "He won't answer any of my calls and I haven't seen him around lately. I just, I really need to talk to him. It's important."
Kiara shrugged. "I can try."
True to her word, Kiara went to see Luka and his father at their apartment after school and told them that Bonnie asked her about getting Luka to talk to her again. The three of them debated what to do. Luka was still pissed and didn't want to trust anything if Bonnie was involved, but Kiara was convinced that Elena and her friends did something to Elijah. This might be the only way to find out what happened to him. So Luka called Bonnie. When she told him that she wanted to set up a meeting, Luka agreed. Of course, Kiara wanted to go too, but Jonas insisted that she stay out of it.
"But I want to help," she complained. "I'm the only one who they can't lie to, why wouldn't you want me there?"
"Because Elijah didn't want you involved in this, remember?" Jonas said. "If he comes back and finds out we dragged you into it, he'll kill me."
Kiara rolled her eyes. "No, he wouldn't. I'd talk to him. He'd understand."
"I've seen the way he looks at you," Jonas said before they stepped out of their apartment. Kiara froze. "You're important to him. I'm sorry, but I can't let anything happen to you. We'll be back as soon as we can."
So Kiara waited, skimming through their grimoire collection until they came back. She heard their voices growing closer as they walked down the hallway. The two of them were arguing again over whether or not they could find the place where the witches were massacred, this time with the help of Bonnie and her friends. It was a big part of Elijah's plan and without it, they had no hope of killing Klaus. It seemed that Luka wanted to trust them, but Jonas disagreed.
"Elijah is the answer. Not Stefan and his brother. They are our enemies and they need to be dealt with," Jonas said as they walked into the apartment.
"What are you gonna do? Kill 'em?
"No. I'm gonna let Elijah do it," Jonas said, turning to Kiara. "I think you're right. I think they have Elijah stashed away somewhere and we're going to find him."
"But how? You said the locator spells weren't working…" Kiara shook her head.
"You still want to help?" Jonas asked her and she nodded. "Then I'm going to need to channel you. The spell I have in mind requires a lot of energy. It will take everything I've got and I could use your assistance."
"You got it," Kiara said and they got everything set up.
"Are you sure about this?" Jonas asked Luka before they got started. "I mean, I would go if I could."
"No. I'm not strong enough to send you, even with Kiara's help," Luka told him, playing with his hands nervously. "I can do this."
"I'll stay anchored and use all my energy. If you feel weak…"
"Dad," Luka interrupted him. "I want this just as much as you do."
When they grabbed each other's hands, Kiara placed hers on Jonas's shoulders.
"Concentrate on Elijah," Jonas told his son. "Picture him in your mind."
Luka took a couple of deep breaths before he said, "I got it."
Then Jonas started chanting in Latin. Kiara could feel her energy linking with Jonas as he spoke. The pulling sensation was uncomfortable but bearable. Luka, however, started breathing deeply like he was in pain.
"I'm in the Salvatore house," he said. "You were right, Kiara, Elijah's body must be here."
"What do you see?" Kiara asked.
"Elena and Damon," Luka told her. "They're reading."
"Good. If Elijah's there, you'll sense him. Stay focused." Jonas told him.
"That's weird," Luka said. "Elena's getting blood out of a refrigerator."
"Maybe she's grabbing some for Damon?" Jonas shrugged.
"Either that or it's Katherine," Kiara said. "But Elijah said he compelled her to stay in some tomb. Even if she managed to get out of there, I doubt she would have stuck around to wait for Klaus to come and kill her."
"I found him," Luka said. "They have cells in their basement… his body is in one of them."
"Creepy…" Kiara shivered. "Is he okay?"
"He looks dead. There's a dagger sticking out of his chest and he's desiccated."
"A dagger?" Kiara perked up, remembering what Elijah said about his siblings. She didn't know how they would have gotten a hold of one of the daggers that were made to subdue the Original family, but it was the only possibility. "You have to get it out. Elijah only stays dead if it's in his heart."
Luka frowned. "Are you sure?"
"Positive."
So Luka started pulling the dagger out slowly, he said Elena was there and wanted to wait until she left, but she couldn't see Luka so he started pulling the dagger out again. Suddenly, Kiara felt a pull and Luka started shaking.
"Elena's fighting me," Luka grunted.
"What's wrong?" Jonas asked, confused.
"She's stronger than me," Luka gritted his teeth.
"That's because it's not Elena," Kiara told him. "It's Katherine Pierce."
Jonas nodded frantically. "She's right, Luka. You have to kill her."
"What?" Luka looked scared.
"She's a vampire," Jonas told him. "Find a stake and drive it through her heart."
Luka nodded and went to find one.
Kiara could feel her heart pounding wildly in her chest. They were so close to getting Elijah back, but she didn't want to sacrifice Luka to get him. "I don't know… maybe we should try again another time?" she suggested. "We didn't expect Katherine to be there."
"No, we do this now. We may not get another chance," Jonas said.
Luka was sweating profusely now and seemed to be really struggling to stay focused.
"Luka, what's going on?" Jonas asked him.
Luka didn't answer and then suddenly, he was on fire. He jumped off the chair, screaming. Kiara stumbled back in shock while Jonas jumped to his feet shouting his son's name. They watched as he ran around the room on fire. Both thinking the same thing: how did this happen? Jonas grabbed a blanket off the couch and wrapped it around his son. But he wasn't screaming anymore.
"Oh my God! Luka. Luka. I'm sorry," Jonas said, once the fire was out and he could turn him around. "Please… just wake up son."
Kiara's hands were over her mouth as she watched him check his pulse.
"Open your eyes," he begged.
Tears filled Kiara's eyes as Jonas turned and grabbed the grimoire he had on the table and started flipping through the pages. He started reading from it and calling Luka's name. But nothing was happening.
The smell of Luka's burned flesh was all around them. Kiara felt like she was suffocating.
Jonas started crying over his son before he whipped around to face her. "Help him," he said. "Bring him back!"
She pressed herself into the wall behind her and said, "I, I don't know how and even if I did…" she said, remembering what Holly said only days ago. "What if he comes back different?"
He stood up, grabbed her wrist, and pulled her to Luka's singed body. "I don't care. Just try. Please, I'll do anything! I can't lose my boy."
Kiara put her hands on Luka's chest and tried to concentrate on reviving him. She pictured him jumping back to life. She pictured his heart starting to beat. Nothing happened. "I'm sorry. I, I don't know what to do," she said, tears streaming down her face. "Nothing's happening."
But Jonas just cried. "I love my boy," he said.
"I know," Kiara nodded, wiping at her face. "I know you do and he loves you… " she turned to Luka and leaned down as if she might kiss his cheek. "Please forgive me, Luka…" she whispered and suddenly, a strange glowing mist seeped from her mouth into his.
"Luka?" she sniffed as his burns started to dissipate.
Jonas looked at her. "What's happening?"
"I, I don't know." She sat up straight.
And Luka's eyes opened.
Slowly Luka pushed himself up into a sitting position and said, "Dad? Kiara? What happened?"
Jonas wrapped his arms around his son and pulled him into a tight hug. "Oh, thank you. Thank you for bringing back my boy."
Kiara smiled, relieved, and then slipped into darkness.
The Martins broke apart when her body hit the floor. They stared at each other for a moment before reaching out to check on her. She was still breathing, but her pulse was weak. Jonas lifted her up into his arms and laid her down on the couch so she'd be more comfortable.
"Do you think she'll be okay?" Luka said, sitting in a chair across from her. His elbows on his knees. His eyes on her chest, watching it rising and falling half expecting it to come to a stop.
"I believe so," Jonas nodded, getting something to drink from the kitchen. "She's probably just tired after… all that."
Luka nodded.
With a bang, the door flew open and Stefan was standing in the doorway. He peered inside, unable to enter, and looked confused to find both witches were unharmed.
Jonas stomped towards the vampire, still angry that his son had just died. "You nearly killed him!" Jonas said, using his magic to make Stefan grab his head in pain. "You said you wanted to help us, but you're just a lying bloodsucking monster!"
"No!" Stefan tried to speak, but he couldn't.
"Dad!" Luka stood up. "Stop."
Jonas lifted a hand and Stefan fell to the floor in pain. Then he looked at his son in confusion. "Why should I?"
"Because it wasn't Stefan," Luka told him. "And if we make an enemy of him now, we'll have no chance against Klaus. We need to consider our next steps, carefully. We owe Kiara that much."
Stefan, still holding his hand, looked into the room. He saw Kiara unconscious on the sofa. Before either witch could say or do anything, he raced out of there.
Less than an hour later, Kiara woke up with a throbbing headache. Her body felt heavy and it was hard to breathe. Slowly, her eyes wandered around the room and found Luka staring at her. The memory of his burned face wiggled its way into her head. It felt like a lingering nightmare, but she knew it wasn't. Luka had died. And then she brought him back.
"Hi," she whispered, her throat scratchy.
"Hi yourself," he smiled.
"You're okay," she said.
He nodded. "Thanks to you."
"Do you feel any different?"
"You mean, am I an incubus?" he asked. Then shook his head. "No. I feel fine."
Kiara blinked at him. He didn't look any different. Slowly, she pulled herself up into a sitting position. "Where's your dad?"
"Grabbing something to eat," Luka said, grabbing his hands on his legs like his palms were sweaty. "Neither of us really felt like cooking after everything."
"Speaking of, I kinda need to feed… "
"Feed on me." Luka offered without hesitation.
She gave him a wary look.
"I'm serious," he smiled. "It's the least I can do."
"No," she sighed, forcing herself to stand. "I don't know what would happen to you so soon after bringing you back. Besides, I don't think I should feed on my friends. Makes things too complicated."
Luka laughed. "We're friends now?"
"I think so… yeah," Kiara nodded. "I mean, I don't bring just anyone back from the dead."
"Well, friend, there's live music playing at the grill tonight. I'm sure you can find plenty of drunk people there to lead away from the crowd…" Luka said.
"Good idea," Kiara said, heading for the door. "I'll be right back. You tell your father to start hatching a new plan. I don't want Elijah staying in that cell another day."
The three of them plotted for a couple of hours trying to think of a way to get Elijah out of that house. They all agreed it was too risky to send Luka again. It left them with no other option. Kiara would have to go.
"I don't like this," Luka rubbed the back of his neck. "You shouldn't be going in there alone."
"Look I told you, Elena, Bonnie, and Caroline are at the Grill. I saw them with my own eyes. I'm sure they'll be there for a little while longer. We just need to get Stefan and Damon out of the house too."
"What about Katherine?" Jonas asked.
Kiara shrugged. "I'll figure something out. Worst case? I charm her."
Luka looked at his father, but Jonas only shrugged. "We don't have much of a choice."
"So we're agreed? You tell Bonnie that you want to talk to Damon and Stefan tonight about working together. When they go to the grill to meet up with you, I go get Elijah."
The two of them nodded at her.
Kiara waited until she got the okay text from Luka before she headed to the Salvatore house. She thought about trying to sneak in through one of the windows, but she knew that Katherine would hear her. So she knocked on the door. To her surprise, Katherine actually answered.
"Elena!" Kiara said, knowing she wasn't supposed to know about the vampire doppelganger. "Hi, um, I know this is weird, but I think I left something here the other day… "
Katherine squinted her dark eyes at her but didn't respond.
"Damon didn't tell you? I was here the other day, you know when Jules tortured him for the location of the moonstone? I tried to help, but her pack attacked me?"
"Oh…" Katherine nodded. "Right. Yeah, he said something about that."
"Anyway, I think my necklace fell off or something. I haven't been able to find it and this is the last place I remember I had it, you haven't seen it have you?"
"No."
"Do you think I could come in and look around?" Kiara asked, pointing into the house and brushing her hand against the vampire's arm in the process. "I'd really appreciate it."
Katherine smiled and said, "Sure," before stepping aside.
The vampire closed the door behind her and Kiara immediately started walking around the house, pretending to look for a piece of jewelry on the floor.
"What's it look like?"
"What?"
"The necklace… what's it look like?"
"Oh, uh, it's a teardrop-shaped pendant," Kiara lied. "Emerald jewel. It belonged to my grandmother."
"Wow, sounds pretty. I'll help you look."
Kiara froze and turned around to face her. "Oh, um, okay," she nodded. "I'll look down this hallway. Can you look in the library? I woke up on the couch there. Maybe it slipped under the cushions or something?"
Katherine hesitated, clearly not wanting to leave her alone, but agreed anyway.
Once the vampire was out of sight, Kiara quietly made her way down into the basement where Luka said Elijah was. A chill went up her spine as she spotted him. His suit was torn and burned up. His body stiff. It looked like he was dead.
Kiara stepped into the cell and kneeled down to pull the dagger out of Elijah's chest. She was surprised by how much his body resisted its removable and struggled more than she thought she would. She was just about to pull the dagger out all the way out when she was smashed up against the wall, face first.
"That's not a necklace," Katherine taunted.
Kiara groaned in pain. Thankfully, she was at full strength since she just fed and she was able to fight back at least a little bit. She turned and kicked the vampire's stomach. Katherine flew across the room. Kiara dropped to her knees to grab hold of the dagger's hilt, but Katherine was fast. She grabbed Kiara by the throat and slammed a broken chair leg into her stomach.
The pain that ripped through her was more than she'd ever felt before. Katherine pulled it back out and tossed the wood onto the floor, Kiara felt her blood drip onto the ground. Dizzy, she stumbled back into the wall and slid down onto the floor, unable to hold herself upright any longer. Eventually, she fell unconscious.
When she woke up, she was lying on a bed in a room she didn't recognize. She felt hot and achy so she knew she needed to feed. She blinked up at the ceiling. Her hands felt around until it reached her stomach. Her shirt was still a little damp, but the blood on her skin was dry. And there was no wound. She groaned and tried to sit up, but the muscles in her stomach were still healing so she lied back down.
"Finally," someone said.
Kiara looked to her right to see Elena on the bed next to her. Her face was in her hand and she was lying on her side.
"Elena?" she asked.
The girl shook her head.
"Katherine," she nodded, remembering what happened.
A grin spread over the vampire's face. "So you have heard of me… "
Alright. This chapter was a bit of a struggle. I hope you enjoyed it anyway. I'm not sure if Kiara and Katherine are going to get along... what do you guys think?
Thanks for reading!
