A/N: it's been another 3 years and man oh man how things have changed in my life (not to mention this pandemic). I'm determined to get this done. let's go for it. I only own the plot which will hopefully be completed in 2022.
(Beast Boy POV)
To say the ride to the hospital for this surprise surgery was tense would be an understatement.
Terra was trying to act calm but I could hear her shifting in her seat trying to get comfortable. Robin sat in the front while Cy drove, just flipping through the radio before giving up. Hell Cyborg wasn't even going on a rant about how other people were driving.
"I know I'm blind but I can hear how anxious you all are." I said breaking the silence.
"I just don't know what to say right now." Terra responded resting her head on my shoulder and grabbing my hand.
"I want today to go well for you, man. You still got a lot to see in this world." Cyborg told me as the car turned sharply to the right, just like it always does when we pull into the hospital parking lot. "We're here."
With that I heard car doors opening and slamming shut again. By the time I got out, I felt a hand touching mine. Terra. She squeezed my hand and helped me make it inside without running into a pole.
Three doors, seven hallways, and two minutes of shitty elevator music later. I was being guided to sit while we wait for the surgeon to be ready for us.
"Mr. Logan, please." A loud accented voice called out.
And just like that our group was on the move again. I soon found myself in a much more comfortable chair and there seemed to be a desk right in front of me.
"Where are we?" I whispered to who I hoped was Terra.
"The surgeon's office to go over the procedure." It was Robin. Oops.
"The procedure isn't long and we would know right away if it works or if it causes permanent damage. The idea that we go through the retina and reattach the optic nerve. However, part of the procedure requires lasers which in some cases can permanently melt the optic nerve" The surgeon explained.
"And when have those cases occurred?" I heard Terra ask.
"If the optic nerve has plenty of tissue to reattach, it will be successful. But sometimes the nerve tissue is gone or less, the laser will melt the little bit that is left resulting in blindness." The surgeon started and hesitated. "Unfortunately, I won't know until I get in there."
"How long will the procedure take?" I ask.
"Only an hour. 90 minutes tops. "
"Let's do it." I start to rise from my chair but a light hand stops me.
"You don't have to do this." She says moving her hand up my arm and coming to rest of my cheek.
I take her hand in mind and stroke it with my thumb. "I've gotta try. Besides, its not like the tower is safe for a blind person. Can you imagine all the weird Starfire food I might eat by mistake?" I chuckle and to my relief so does she.
I'm lead to another room with the knowledge that they'll be right there waiting for me when I'm done.
"Alright, Garfield, let's get you numbed up. I regret to inform you that I need you awake for this. I need to monitor your eye movement and brain activity during the procedure. After we're done, I'm going to put a bandage over your eyes and you'll go home. Don't remove the bandage until tomorrow morning."
"Whatever you say. Can you give me anything to help with the anxiety though? I can smell that we're in a hospital and it isn't sitting right with me."
"Perfectly reasonable. I'll give you a mild dose of an anti anxiety medicine to keep you calm."
10 minutes and a couple needle poke later, I was vaguely aware I was in a chair with monitors attached to me and in an itchy hospital gown.
Sure enough, a little over an hour later I felt a cloth bandage go around my eyes. A nurse helped me get changed and got me in a wheelchair to bring me back out.
I was greeted with hugs and high fives. Once I was finally back in the car and some rap music was chosen, I leaned my head on Terras shoulder and I drifted off, in hopes when I opened my eyes, I'd actually see some fucking color.
