Rosalie and Freckles were with Jane watching the boys practice their sword work. Rosalie had been surprised when Carlos had decided to join the team. She knew he liked tourney the best, but with the tourney season over, Carlos had decided to join another team. He was quite good, easily better than she was. Rosalie didn't pride herself on her sword work whatsoever. Ben had been teaching her as a way of self-defense before he was swamped with his duties as king. It had been a long while since she had practiced.
"Alright, boys! Let's line it up!" Jay called, "Carlos, you're with me. Let's go."
Rosalie enjoyed watching the team practice. She had looked up from the paper she was supposed to be writing to watch them practicing with each other. Jay's commands, while they practiced, helped them get their form into better shape. Although she enjoyed watching practice, Rosalie had no interest in joining the team. Though if she was being completely honest, she did rather enjoy watching Carlos practice. Her heart stuttered at the thought and she felt a blush rise to her cheeks. She had shaken away the thoughts just in time to notice Jay fiercely fighting with someone dressed in the team uniform. Jay had struggled with their fight. Finally, the opponent took off her mask.
"It's Lonnie!" Jane called.
Rosalie joined in with the cheers.
"Not bad." Jay complimented.
"You should put me on the team," Lonnie stated.
Before Jay could respond, Chad interjected.
"Hey, what?! No, no, no. We'll be the laughingstock of the league. And what's gonna happen next? We'll have girls playing tourney? Come on guys,"
"So?" Jay asked.
"So? So have you not read the rulebook? Section two, paragraph three eleven dash four. A team will be comprised of a captain and eight men. Why don't you read the rulebook?"
"Yeah but you're down a man! Ever since Ben had to leave to do all that king stuff." Lonnie protested.
"Exactly. We're down a man."
"Jay."
"I'm sorry. I mean coach trusts me. I'm not going to stay captain if I just throw out the rulebook." Jay replied.
"If my mother thought that way, she would've lost the war."
"Pffft. Okay." Chad scoffed, "Rulebook!"
"Alright, guys. Practice is over." Jay called.
Rosalie turned to Jane and they got ready to leave the room. Carlos noticed the two of them getting ready to leave.
"Rose!" he called up to them.
"I'll catch you later!" Jane smiled, heading out to leave Rose to talk to Carlos.
"What's up Carlos?" Rose rested her hands on the railing a smiled down at the De Vil.
"Uh, hi."
Rose giggled, "Hi."
"Um, how's it going?"
"Good, how are you?"
"Good, uh, Rose, I-"
Rosalie's phone started to ring.
"Oh, I'm so sorry! It's Ben. I've got to go. Great practice! I'll see you later?"
"Uh, yeah. Yeah sure."
Rosalie answered the phone and quickly left the room. Carlos sighed as he watched her walk away. Dude whined from his seat on the floor.
"It wasn't the right time okay!" Carlos defended.
Later, Carlos and Dude were in Jay and Carlos' dorm room. Carlos was typing at his computer.
"How to ask the girl you're dating to be your girlfriend," he mumbled while typing.
Mal opened the door to the room and stormed in, quickly locking the door shut behind her. She then turned off the television in the room that was playing the news about her and the Royal Cotillion. She was breathing heavily as she paced around the room. Finally, Mal stopped only for her eyes to flash green.
"Woah," Carlos exclaimed, "Easy girl."
"You think this is so easy?!" Mal snapped, pointing to the door she came in, "You don't have people taking a photo of you every time you open your mouth to say boo! I mean, it's not that I could even say boo but you know."
"I'm sorry."
"Carlos, don't you ever miss screaming at people and making them run away from you?"
"You're thinking of my mother. And I was usually on the other end of that. So, not really. No."
Mal sighed. Carlos stood because he had a moment of realization.
"Oh, hey. Did you bring it?" he asked.
Mal sighed again before putting something into her hand. Before either of them could say anything, the door to the room opened. The two of them turned to see Chad Charming walking into the room. Chad tossed a key he had into the air before catching it again. He turned around and froze when he saw Mal and Carlos standing there watching him.
"Uh, hi." Chad nervously chuckled, "Just came to use your 3D printer. Won't be a sec."
"How'd you get a key to my room?" Carlos asked.
"Uhhhh Rosalie gave it to me?"
"She would never. Try again."
"I printed it off the last time I was in here. You guys were sleeping."
Carlos and Mal shared a look.
"Look, I just. Your printer's so much better than mine! And you installed these hacks and everything runs so much smoother than mine."
"Out!" Carlos cut him off, pointing at the door, "Now."
"Fine, fine."
"Chad!"
"What?"
"Leave the key!"
Chad grumbled as he set the key down and left the room. Carlos turned back to Mal.
"Mal?" Carlos started.
"Mmm?" Mal made a noise of acknowledgment.
"My potion."
"Mmm. Yeah, um." Mal held up a gummy.
"So this thing will make me say all the things I really feel to Rose?"
"Yeah, I mean, this is a truth gummy so. Take it or leave it."
"Perfect."
"Hold on though. Are you sure you want to be taking this? Because this is going to make you say the truth. All the time, no matter what. And the only reason that I'm asking is because I know that if I took this right now, I would get myself sent back to the Isle. Which, it's not that that sounds super unappealing, but, you know."
"Yeah. I'll take my chances I guess."
"Okay," Mal went to hand the gummy over to Carlos, but before she could, Dude came and snatched it out of her hand, "Ooh! Bad dog!"
Carlos and Mal turned to Dude as he shook. Then talked.
"Man that thing was nasty!"
Carlos sent Mal a look of shock.
"And you?" Dude addressed Carlos, "You just got to man up."
Carlos and Mal continued to look on in shock.
"And while you're at it? Scratch my butt!"
After a few seconds, Mal finally spoke up, "You heard him. Scratch his butt." Mal then turned and left the room.
Carlos looked after her, "Mal! You're just going to leave me with him?"
The door closed behind Mal. Carlos turned his attention back to Dude.
"Come on! You scratch your own all of the time!"
After Mal left, Carlos realized what time it was. He left Dude in the dorm room to figure out later. Taking a slight jog, Carlos found his way down the path in the woods. When he broke into the small clearing, the slight in front of him made him smile. Rosalie was lying on her back with a book in one hand, and her other hand petting Freckles. Freckles had her head rested on Rosalie's stomach. Carlos walked further into the clearing. The noise he made on the gravel caused Rosalie to take her attention off of her book.
"Carlos!" she smiled, putting her book down and sitting up. Freckles let out a small whine of protest.
"Hey," Carlos smiled back, his heart was racing. He needed that truth potion. This was when he was supposed to ask her to be his girlfriend.
"How are you?" Rosalie patted the ground next to her.
Carlos took the invitation and sat down next to Rosalie, "I'm okay, uh, good. I'm good. How are you?"
Carlos internally cursed at his stumbling. He was beyond nervous. Rosalie raised an eyebrow, noticing the stutter.
"I'm good," Rosalie replied, "Are you sure you're okay?"
"Yeah, uh, yeah I'm fine."
"If you say so. The clouds are really pretty today." Rosalie commented as she laid back down in the grass.
Carlos followed suit and looked up at the sky. The sky was a brilliant blue other than the few wispy clouds here and there. A brush on his hand made him jump. Carlos realized it was Rosalie's hand, so he took hold of it. Before he could acknowledge it or stop it, Carlos was rambling about what had happened with Chad and Mal.
"I can't believe Chad tried to blame that on me," Rosalie rolled her eyes, "What had Mal come to give you?"
Carlos stopped, not sure how to respond.
"Well, she, uh," he was stuttering again.
Before he could think of a good answer, he was distracted by his phone ringing. Pulling it out of his pocket, he saw Jay's name appear on the screen.
"Go on and answer it!" Rosalie encouraged.
Carlos put the phone to his ear to hear Jay.
"We have a problem. Mal's gone."
