Disclaimer: I don't own Harry, Lily, James, or Lord Voldemort. These characters were made up by Jo Rowling, the brilliant woman.

Lily Evans wasn't like other witches in the Wizarding World. She was one of the few people who wasn't afraid to speak his name aloud. The name of her husband's murderer. The man who had killed James. Who had shouted at Lily to leave before turning his wand on Harry. On her only child.

--Flashback--
8:45 P.M., Godric's Hollow, October 31

Lily sat down next to James on the couch with a cup of tea. Harry had fallen asleep half an hour ago and his parents were more than ready for some alone time with each other. Lily rested her head on James's shoulder and sipped her tea. She was tired and a bit upset. James had sensed that earlier and suggested that they spend some quiet time that evening. Now, he cupped her chin in his hand and titled her face so he could look her in the eye.

"What's on your mind?" he asked gently,.

"Just thinking," she replied softly.

"About what?" James asked.

"Harry," she replied.

He frowned. That wasn't what he had expected. "Not me?" he asked, teasingly.

Lily rolled her eyes. "I love you even though you're so dumb," she said, "But what i meant is that Harry's awake...again. and i have to get him...again."

She stood up and handed James her cup. Then she walked upstairs and into Baby Harry's nursery. She picked him up and held him to her chest. His cries turned to whimpers, then he quieted. Lily smiled as she put him back into his crib. Even asleep, he looked like James. Except for the eyes. Those were hers. Suddenly, she heard loud voices downstairs. The sound of someone yelling the Killing Curse. Someone falling on the ground. Lily stood next to Harry's crib, her hand over her mouth and tears falling down her face. It had happened. He had come. Lord Voldemort had come to kill the Potters. She heard cold high pitched laughter and knew there wasn't much time. She leaned into Harry's crib and wrapped in a hug for what she thought would be the last time.

"Harry," she wept, "i need you to remember this: Mummy loves you. No matter what happens tonight, Mummy and Daddy have always loved you."

The door was kicked open. Lord Voldemort entered the room.

"Get out of the way, Lily," he hissed, "You don't have to die...Just step aside...I love you and i don't want to kill you..."

Lily refused to move. Voldemort raised his wand and pointed it at her chest. He uttered the Killing Curse and she fell over dead. Well, he thought she was dead.

--End Flashback--

Lily knew that she had been the only person Lord Voldemort had ever truly loved. But if he loved Lily, why had he killed James? Why had he tried to kill Harry? Lily knew about the prophecy.

Neither can live while the other survives.

She also knew that there was another boy who would fall under the prophecy. But, as Lily held her son that fateful Halloween night, she knew what she had to do. Raise Harry normally. And, when the time was right, she would tell him how his father had died. How he had almost died. He would know about the prophecy. He would know that one day, he would have to kill Voldemort or Voldemort would kill him.

Neither can live while the other survives.
