Author's Notes: I'm currently reading a wonderful book that includes a song for each chapter. I love this idea and plan to implement this in my writing, too! I think it just adds another layer of description that helps you be present with the characters in the scene.

I have also signed up on GoodReads dot com. If you are an avid reader, I recommend you check it out.

Thus, on with our story.

Chapter 40

Rose wasn't sure what she had expected for her suite but felt her mouth drop open when Danny opened the door.

She stepped into a small receiving room that had several doors leading to the other rooms.

Danny walked directly to one that was marked "B" and opened it. "I had my bag put in here. I hope it's not-"

Rose stepped into the room and giggled, "Presumptuous?"

"Damn. That's what I was aiming for." He teased and followed her into the room. "You look a bit better. You probably still need a wet towel for your face."

"No." She told him quickly, "I don't want to spoil my make-up."

He pulled her to him and looked at her face for a few moments. Watching his eyes brought back the lust that he always arose in her. She felt his fingertips stroke her arm. She smiled, which forced him to look away and laugh.

"I suddenly became…." He cleared his throat, "nervous. Gosh, I'm really standing here with-"

She smiled, "Rose. It's just Rose, Danny."

He grinned, "Rosie."

"Kiss me. Maybe it will help."

He cupped her face in both of his hands. Staring at her lips, he licked his own. The anticipation rose her heart rate. His beautiful dark eyes seemed to be lost in hers.

Finally, their lips met. He gave her a couple of kisses to tease her lips. She held him loosey around his waist.

He leaned back and smiled at her. Seeing his face again made her heart skip.

"You, are such a child." She rolled her eyes. "Do I need to take charge of this?"

"That's a killer idea." He smiled and dropped his hands to her bum. He whispered, "You handle all of the romance decisions, and Russ can have everything else."

She put her finger over his lips. "Stop."

He spoke out the side of his mouth from behind her finger. "This is getting in the way of me kissing you." Then he kissed her finger. "Or is that what you want? Got a finger fetish?-"

"Stop!" She threw her hands out and walked away from him. "Oh! You drive me, mental!"

He laughed and disappeared into one of the bedrooms.

She crossed her arms and laughed. Danny always seemed to know just what to do to lighten the mood. Maybe it was because he didn't seem to take anything seriously at all.

She smiled as she realized that he was just what she needed right now in this moment of her life.

The room had been beautifully decorated for Christmas and even had a small tree in the corner of the room. The room also had a long window that took up most of the third wall that showed the view of the passing Earth beneath them. The sun was beginning to set behind the mountains that were growing closer.

Danny had just stepped back out holding a blanket. He pushed the low table against the wall to make room and spread out the blanket on the floor.

"What are you doing?" She asked.

He stood up and smiled at her. "When was the last time you had a picnic on a flying carpet?"

She laughed just as a doorbell sounded. Danny walked over and took her hand. "Get comfortable, I'll get the food."

He kissed her quickly before he stepped back out of the room.

She turned and slipped off her shoes. She was wearing a comfortable dark purple jumper and those odd pair of jeans that she had found in her closet. She sat down and ran her hand across her thigh, looking at the material.

She mumbled, "I could have sworn I left these in the TARDIS."

Danny reappeared in the room holding a tray. "And I have food for the picnic."

She laughed and crossed her legs. "Just in time!"

He handed her the tray that she sat down on the blanket.

"Is the blanket too close to the window, or-"

"No. It's fine." She smiled. "This is so clever. I would have never thought of this."

"Clever, huh?" Danny took off his jacket and lay it across the arm of the sofa. He sat down on the blanket with her. "That's the first time I believe I've ever been called that."

"Be careful. You're showing that you just hang around Americans."

"Something I plan to change in my future."

She giggled.

He removed the silver domes over the plates and presented the food. "So, chips as you requested. But, I figured some finger food would be welcomed, too. Tell me if you don't know what anything is."

She looked over the plates and smiled as she saw familiar things such as small sandwiches, chips, wings, some fruit and vegetables, cheese, and olives.

She grabbed a chip, "This is perfect, Danny. Thank you."

"I've decided that I'm going to be your guide in this new place. This new place that we'll call, "Danny's World.""

She took some cheese and giggled at him, "Danny's World, huh? I like that."

She had to admit it was much better than what the Doctor had named it, "Pete's World."

Danny sipped some of his drink. "So, does all of this food look familiar?"

"It looks normal. And these chips are gorgeous."

He laughed, "Gorgeous. Imagine a place where there are ugly French fries, deodorant soap bars, and tooth styling gel."

She shook her head and began to laugh. "Shut up, Danny."

He chuckled at her. "And to present the best that Danny's World has to offer, I have brought us some of my favorites. The only thing I like that I opted out on was onion sticks."

"What are those?"

"Well, they cut an onion into sticks. But, they don't lay flat because of the natural curve of the onion. Then, you roll it in flour and fry it. It's like a french fry, but instead of the potato, they use an onion."

She smiled, "That sounds like something we have back home. But, they cut them into rings. Onion rings."

"Onion Rings?"

"Yes." She giggled.

"See. Something else familiar to you then. I wonder why they cut them differently?"

She took a small sandwich. "Maybe to match the already popular chip?"

He nodded, "Well, that makes sense. Probably."

She couldn't help but feel proud of herself.

With a pang, the memory of the Doctor returned to her. Her reply sounded so much like his words with a reasonable answer to the problem. She stared down at her sandwich as she absentmindedly chewed. It must have shown on her face.

"Hey," Danny said quietly as he reached over and put his hand on her thigh. "What's on your mind?"

She shook her head. "Stuff. I'm sorry, I-"

He sat back up and grabbed a chip. "Don't be sorry. Sometimes it still comes back and…." He tossed the chip in his mouth and moved his hand around his head in an animated way, "….just…contaminates all of the progress."

"Exactly!" How did he always seem to know how she felt? "It's like, one minute you're completely fine and-"

"Yes. Just in an instant, everything comes back. I think it's like standing in an ocean. Sometimes the waves are small, sometimes it overtakes you. But, it's always there."

She decided to change the subject. "Why didn't you get onion rings…Or chips?"

He rolled his eyes, "Onion chips."

"Well, wouldn't that be the English equivalent?"

"No." He laughed as if the idea was mad, "They call them onion sticks, too. Well, I think they do. I don't know. I'll have to ask someone. But, no. They had them, but didn't want them tonight."

"Why?"

"Because my dear, we're fresh out of tooth gel."

She covered her face and laughed.

"And we simply don't have any idea how we're going to style our teeth." He tossed a fry in his mouth, "And I thought the craziest thing about your people is you didn't know what shit was."

She playfully pushed his shoulder. "You are mad."

He laughed.

Rose sipped her drink, "What is this?"

"Guess."

It was red with several cherries floating around the ice. She sipped it again through a straw, leaving her lipstick prints on it.

"See, it's good for you, too. Well, not really." He glanced up at her. "I think that's bullshit. What do you think?"

"This is Vitex!" She realized.

"So, you have had it?"

"This is my first one."

He laughed. "How long have you been here? You are just now trying this? What do people drink on the other side?"

She sipped it, "Pop. Regular stuff."

"Like what? Name something."

"Coca-cola."

He sipped his purple drink and looked at her, "A what?"

"A Coke?"

He laughed. "Here, coke is sort for cocaine. An illegal drug."

"It was there, too. Because it was made with cocaine."

"So, there's cocaine in the drink?"

"Not anymore. I don't know. Surely not."

"Now, that's the craziest shit I've ever heard in my life."

"I'm serious!"

He met her gaze and offered her a sip of his purple soda. "This one is called, "violet." It is supposed to melt fat and give you a Vitamin C boost. I always drink one when I fly."

"But, you think the health benefits are bullshit." She pointed out.

"Hey. This is real talk, here."

"You do realize I'm the heiress of this drink you're insulting."

"Doesn't change my opinion of it."

She sipped some through the straw, "That tastes like a grape pop."

"Oh! A grape pop. Now that sounds good. I imagine it would taste a bit like grape juice, right?"

"Not, at all." She smiled and bit her straw. "It tastes like….purple."

"Oh, that's violet, here. I eat violet everything. Bubblegum, candies, that hard candy that turns your mouth purple….."

She laughed, "So, violet is your favorite?"

"Absolutely. Which one is yours?"

"I have no idea yet."

He winked at her, "I'll help you figure it out. This one is cherry. It's supposed to keep you from getting wrinkles. I think it's because it is so sour."

He drew up his face to tease her.

"You are such a child." She laughed before she sipped her drink again.

He picked up an odd eggroll that was cut in half, longways, and ate it. Rose smiled but didn't say anything about it looking strange to her.

After eating a bit more, he took one of the red Christmas napkins and wiped his hands, "What did Lewis want?"

"He was about to have a meeting with Pete and wanted to know what he should tell him about, you know. The mob."

He nodded and began to eat some of the chips. "And me. What have we decided about that?"

She sat back and sipped her drink again. "Danny, I think it would be best to just keep it between us for now. Well. And Russ."

He chuckled, "And Russ. Yeah, sorry. We're a package deal at the moment."

"And I've told Mickey."

"Okay, between you and me, Russ and Mickey, Lewis. A small army of bodyguards. Damn. This bed is filling up quick."

She laughed. "Danny, I'm so glad that I met you."

"Fries that good, huh?"

"All of this is wonderful."

Danny smiled, "I wonder what Lewis will be eating for dinner tonight?"

"He had waffles with peanut butter and cheese before we left."

Danny didn't appear surprised. "No jelly, too? It wouldn't surprise me."

Rose sipped her drink, "Talking about Lewis. How well do you know him?"

"I've known Lewis for a few months. While I've been in New York. Why?"

"I hate to admit it, but….I think he's lying to me."

He tossed a chip into his mouth and grinned. "Lewis is a terrible liar. I doubt it."

"How do you know that?"

His dark eyes met hers, "I play cards."

"What? Poker?"

"Yes. The entire point of that is who can lie the best."

She smiled, "That's how you can tell when I'm lying-"

"You are the worst liar I've ever met."

"Oh, come on. Seriously. How can you even tell that?"

He sipped his drink. "It's just a look you have. It's like, high beams on a car to me."

"Oh, whatever. Anyway. Lewis….he's well. I…" She began to put together how she wanted to explain that she had mistaken Lewis for the Doctor because he could change his face.

She looked up to see him looking at her. "So, what are you debating on telling me that you're sure I won't believe now?"

She closed her eyes. "How do you always know?"

He grabbed another eggroll, "It's just a look you have."

She sighed, "I hate to even talk about this."

"Oh," he chewed, "It's about him, then. Did you ever tell me this Doctor's name?"

She bit her lip, "Jack."

"So, there were two Jacks? What are the odds?"

"Oh, shit."

He laughed, "Such a terrible liar."

"Okay, I'll give you that one." She sat back and decided to just tell him. "The man who, I traveled with before I came here, he could change his face."

"Change his face?"

"Yes. I know that sounds mad, but it was this thing his race of people could do-"

"Because he was an alien-"

"Yes. Look, I know this sounds daft, but-"

"See, that right there. When you are telling the truth, you always doubt I'm going to believe it. Tell me a lie, and add that in there. That doubt. It will make it more believable."

She stopped talking and looked at him in confusion.

"What?" He asked innocently. "Try it."

"Anyway." She decided. "Lewis was helping me fit everything into my bag before we left. I walked out of the room and he had managed it, in a very short time -"

"How long?"

"I don't know. I didn't time it." She thought, "Maybe, it's nothing."

"Maybe it's not." Danny reasoned.

"It is very possible I'm seeing things." She smiled, "It's fine, Danny."

He winked at her and wiped his hands on a bright red cloth napkin. "Okay, let's try this."

"Try what?"

He put the silver domes back over the plates and pushed off of the blanket. "Our magic carpet. Ready?"

She laughed, "Sure!"

He turned on his stomach facing the window that sat nearly a foot away from them. He lay his head level with the floor and looked straight out of the Zeppelin window, above the horizon and the tree line of the approaching mountains. Rose joined him.

"I usually put it directly against the window, but I know you don't like heights."

"Oh, this is wonderful!"

Laying there, looking out at the colors that displayed across the skies, Rose was almost overtaken with tears again. But this time, it wasn't because of her grief as it had always been in the past. "Oh, Danny. This is so beautiful."

She felt his body move closer to hers. She turned to meet his gaze. Facing her, he propped his head in his hand.

His cologne filled her lungs as her heart began to beat at nearly five times its normal rhythm. His sexy, American smile was just inches from her lips. His deep laugh sent tingles all through her body.

He studied her face causing her to blush.

"You look like a rose."

"Oh, shut up." She laughed and turned back to look at the sunset.

Danny took the opportunity to study her body. Reaching out, he traced her spine with a gentle touch. "Is this alright?"

She met his gaze again and whispered, "Of course it is."

He gently stroked her back as she returned to watching the sunset. "Are the colors the same?"

"Yes. It feels like I'm home."

He lay back down and they continued to watch the sunset together. After a few minutes, he purposely bumped her body with his own. She looked back at him.

"Welcome to Danny's World, Rose."

She smiled just before he met her lips with his.
