The month of May was a lovely time. Spring wasn't quite over yet, but the beautiful shining sun still held promises of a most untypically sunny English summer. Saturday afternoon was such a lovely time too, and the only moment of the week when Audrey had a day off, as most Sundays were spent at the Burrow for an obligatory lunch. She quite liked the month of May, but spending her precious Saturday afternoon locked in, waiting for someone who would miss the sun, was not her idea of a nice day.
After one longing look out of the window, Audrey got up from the sofa where she had been reading a book, and made her way down the corridor of their apartment. Their home was a quaint place, filled with family pictures from when Lucy and Molly were younger and not yet at Hogwarts. She reached her husband's office and stopped.
"Percy?" she asked softly as she cracked the door open.
"Yes?" he replied, distractedly.
Audrey opened the door fully. Her husband's office was crowded with books and papers in every nook and cranny. He sat hunched-over at his desk, scribbling wildly on a paper while he poured over a thick open file in front of him. There were also a few half-full cups of coffee strewn over his desk in a most haphazard fashion.
The sun was streaming in from a large window directly onto his face and from where she was, Audrey could make out the green leaves of a tree and a few birds singing gaily. But it was as though he was blind to the spring that was streaming into the room.
"What're you working on?"
Any other person would've been dismissed with a flick of his hand and a growl, but because it was her, he took the time to reply. "Ministry rapport due next Tuesday."
The brevity of his response and the fact that he didn't look in her eyes and continued writing told Audrey all she needed to know. He was getting all stressed up about this. "Percy… can't you do it on Monday?"
He sighed. "I need to get this done as quickly as possible. I've got about three meetings on Monday and-"
She cut him off, "And who else is supposed to be working on this rapport?"
He shifted in his chair. "Robins and Siwele, but if I get it done quicker, I can get that promotion and" – the disappointed look from his wife made his voice die down – "and I didn't want them to spend their weekend working."
Audrey sighed. He hid behind pretentiousness and ambition when truly, he was just being self-sacrificing. Well, there was a good deal of ambition, but that was no longer the only thing that moved him. "And so you are the one spending our Saturday afternoon at your desk."
He blushed sheepishly. "Well-"
"Let's go outside," she declared, cutting him off once more.
He blinked several times, looking at her, mildly surprised. "Outside?"
"You know," she said, with a laugh, "the place with the air and the trees."
He didn't react to her obvious teasing. "But what would we do 'outside'?"
"Oh, I don't know, go for a walk, enjoy the sun or something. Just the two of us." Already she could feel herself outside, enjoying her time with Percy alone, before Molly and Lucy would come back from Hogwarts for the holidays. Saturday afternoons were their time, when there was no one to mind, no one to see, and Percy wasn't supposed to be working.
"Where would we go?" he continued, clearly puzzled.
"Anywhere, everywhere!"
"But, my work…" She could almost see him weighing out the options in his mind, deciding which one would be the best.
She smiled at him. "Come on, it'll be fun. The work can wait, and it'll take your mind off things."
He sighed, but it wasn't heartfelt. A quick spell had all the papers carefully put away and organised. He closed the file in front of him and got up from his desk. "Let's go, then."
Audrey took hold of his hand and squeezed it. The warmth of the sun in his office was radiating through her and she was so happy he had agreed. And she could tell he was also glad of the distraction, no matter what his work-oriented values were telling him; he was also smiling.
Yes, it was going to be one beautiful Saturday afternoon in May.
