Holey cow- a new chapter already?! WHAT ?!
It was best to withhold the note from Garfield, for now. When he was out of the room Dick quickly and quietly asked Eddie about it.
"Oh, dude, I totally forgot! It was in that freaky room that tried to eat me!"
It was conformation that the room in the hospital was the same one that showed up in Gar's hotel room, and more then likely the one from the parade. It was after Garfield, probably because of his powers, but why did it want a normal kid like Eddie Bloomberg? Unless...
"Hay... Eddie... I know we're not supposed to talk about it, but... do you have any idea why that room could be after you? … Do you perhaps know something? Or... are you a meta?"
Eddie smiled. "Can't tell you that, dude. Gar knows what's going on with me, more of less, I just can't, like, tell randos. But I'll totally keep out of any creepy rooms, and I'll make sure not to, like, leave my aunts. Ya know?"
"Yeah. I know..."
Of course Dick knew. By day he was Richard Grayson, ward of the infamous Bruce Wayne, but by night he was Robin, sidekick to the equally infamous Batman of Gotham city. The only person outside of Wayne manor who knew his secret was Garfield (and probably his alters, though it was unconfirmed.)
He had never told Beast Boy about his secret identity. Back when they first met it was as Richard and Garfield. Rita Farr was known for her charity galas, and Bruce Wayne was expected to make an appearance. One particular even, In a bid to avoid the hustle and bustle Dick slunk away into a side room, only to discover he was not alone. Two bright yellow eyes caught the light of the hall way and shone in the darkness. The creature growled, edging into a corner, it's eyes never lifting their gaze from him. Startled, Dick took a step back.
"Merde alors!" He exclaimed, his mouth forming the first language his brain could grasp.
The creatures eyes widened as it whimpered and backed behind a sofa. Guilt spread over Dick. He softly closed the door and went to crowded hall, but this time he had a mission. The teenager selected a large plate and worked his way round the waiters and their canapés. Some of the adults stared at him and shook their heads- others, like Oliver Queen, were more curious.
"Doesn't Bruce feed you?" The man joked, before noticing something was missing from the kids plate. "Oh? You haven't got any the Chili I brought on there! What, is it too spicy?"
Spicy was an understatement. There were stories told of the famous Chili, and apparently Bruce was the only other person, asside from its creator, who could handle the heat.
"Yeah, I'm more of a sweet tooth..."
"Ah, yes. I remember Roy always making sure there was cereal in the cupboard for you..." He sighed. "Shame he couldn't make it tonight; you could go about your shenanigans together! Speaking of, I don't need to avoid the punch, do I?"
"No, the punch is safe." Dick assured him, anxious to get back to creature.
Oliver noticed, and thought it best to let the kid go about his business, without letting on he knew. "Good good. Now. If you don't mind, I have some mingling to do!"
"See you soon!"
The kid snook back into the hall. This time he knocked slightly on the door before opening it.
"Hay, kitty? Or, doggy? I have something for you..."
Carefully, Dick selected a slice of ham and lightly tossed it into the darkness. He could hear the slight growling from the animal.
"It's OK, I wont hurt you."
He then made pspsps noises and rolled a crab puff into the room. It was exciting. What was the animal? Could he befriend it?
The room fell silent.
"Hello? Chien? Mâçko? Minou-minou-minou."
Nothing could have prepared Dick for what happened next.
A dog lunged out of the shadows, knocking him off his feet. It's slobbering tongue made contact his face and its short fur was bristly under his hands.
"Did they put you in there to keep you out of way of the guests?" He asked the dog, pushing it aside so he could sit up. "Hum. Something tells me rolled in the cut grass."
"Garfield!"
Rita's voice carried down the hall as her and Steve came running.
"Garfield, get down!" Demanded Steve, grabbing the young dog by its scruff. It barked at him and was obviously unhappy. "You take him, Rita."
She obliged, but didn't have to use force. The strange green dog jumped over to her as soon as he was released.
"I'm sorry I let him out." Dick confessed as he got to his feet. "I just... wanted to make friends with him..." He expected to be scolded for his actions, but was surprised to hear Rita laugh.
"I don't even know how to explain to this to you."
"Explain what?"
Steve returned, this time with his Mento helmet under his arm. It was so peculiar. Non of the members of the Doom Patrol used a secret identity.
Irritably, the superhero put his helmet on and held one hand towards the dog. Dick dared not talk, and instead watched in wonder as something truly bizarre started to happen. The dog began to change. It's muzzle shrank, fur seemed to melt into flesh, and the whole thing grew slightly. The creature grunted. Finger began to form where there were once paws, and eventually there was a scrawny, naked boy sat on the floor by Rita. Dick couldn't decide what was stranger. The fact he had just watched a dog turn into a boy, or that the boy was green.
"Richard... This is our son, Garfield."
