Chapter 3- Back to School.

School's back in session it is week two and Junior year is nothing out of the ordinary. Well for me, except I had 2 free periods this year instead of one. That's the beauty of being smart and having mostly all A's. As of right now, I'm spending my free time in the library reading romance novels. 'It's a guilty pleasure of mine as much as I didn't want to admit it.' Although today one book in particular that I have never read catches my eye. But it is at the very top of the book shelf for some odd reason. How would I retrieve it...

This is ridiculous why did that certain novel have to be up there. I'm not short in fact I'm 5'7 but it's kind of far up, out of my reach. My eyes scan around for the librarian, a stool, or something that could help me. However, all of those were nowhere to be found. 'Guess I have to take matters into my own hands.' I climb on the book shelf, it's only a few shelves up so not bad. Once up there, I also see a few books that look intriguing but not only novels… A certain boy with an afro, my eyes train on him walking in the library looking around. What was a guy like him doing in here? My gaze stays on him for a few. He made me lose my train of thought, he's dangerous. 'Get it together.' I lecture myself.

I focus back at the task on hand, literally. The romantic novel is kind of wedged between the other books so I have to pry it out.

"Gotcha." I grin as I retrieve the book. I start to come down but my foot slips.

"Ah ahh!" I let out a squeal. Waiting for the impending pain to come although it doesn't. 'But why?' The answer to my question is something caught me, a pair of arms...Or Should I rather say someone, Huey Freeman. 'Talk about Deja Vu.' I stare into his deep wine eyes, they are so brown. So full of something, that I can't pick out.

Huey's lips pull into a smirk, "You know you're kind of clumsy, Dubois." His deep voice speaks while putting me down. I feel fine, I didn't fall so why do my legs also feel like jelly?

I readjust my clothes, "Yeah we've got to stop meeting like this." My face grows hot from how many times I embarrassed myself in front of this boy in the span of less than two months.

Huey's face returns stoic, "What were you trying to get anyway?"

"This." I show him the book I'm holding. He examines it before raising an eyebrow confused or amused, maybe?

"You read erotica?" My turn to look puzzled. I look at the novel in my hand closer than before and my eyes widen in horror.

"N-no I t-thought this was romance." I stutter, feeling flustered.

"I mean hey, if that's what you're into." Huey trails off, "I'm not judging." I sense playfulness in his tone.

"Ha, ha Mr. funny man," I remark sarcastically,"Why are you in here?"

"Anytime I have free time I read. Mainly history and informational things stuff like that." He shrugs. This shocks me, most sports players are dumb ans shallow.

"That's cool… I just didn't think a guy like you would spend time reading."

"A guy like me?" There's that eyebrow raise again. I shrug, I meant a jock, isn't that what he is?

Suddenly Huey comes closer, putting his hand on the book shelf behind me, "Inform me Jazmine, just what do you know about a guy like me?" I suck in a breath at how close he is. Goosebumps forming at our proximity, we are too close for me to think straight. It's like I'm trapped between his arms and the shelves. I peer up into his daring eyes, Huey looks like he's waiting for an answer and he's not letting up.

"I-I don't know n-not much." I struggle to talk.

Huey scoffs, at last moving out my personal space, "You shouldn't make assumptions about people, especially a girl like you." He clicks his tongue, shaking his head. 'Is he mocking me?!'

"Enjoy your erotica. See you in French, Dubois." He speaks in a monotone voice. And with that he's gone, leaving me asking what the hell just happened? Does he get off by teasing people and why did it affect me so much? One thing for certain is Huey is unreadable and I have to steer clear.

After School.

It isn't quite cold outside yet so my friends and I decide to go to the park. Cindy and Riley are in a heated game of 1 on 1 while the others are off doing their own thing. Caesar and Taylor are flirting, Asia awkwardly stands there, watching the two. Huey and Hiro have been debating about something since I got here. And I'm on the swings listening to music in my headphones.

I hum along with Usher's 'Burn' I loved Usher's music so much he's been my number one artist since I was a little girl. R&B is my comfort music, it's so soothing and it clears my mind. Although, I dance to anything my passion is dance along with some gymnastics in there too. Since I was a child I took up all types of dance styles such as ballet, hip hop, and jazz. I enjoy it all.

The song stops just as a figure blocks the sun next to me. I look up, "Yes Huey." I try to show no interest. Lowkey happy that he was over here.

He takes a seat in the swing, "Why are you all alone?"

I shrug, "I can ask you the same. Shouldn't you be somewhere chasing a football around?"

"Remember it was me chasing a football around that saved you from getting knocked upside the head." He taps his chin. Ugh that ball should have just hit me that day.

I copy his action, "You know I don't recall that happening."

"Hmm reading all those eroticas must be clouding your memory." I gulp at him reminding me of earlier. Huey probably thinks I'm some sort of sex crazed freak now. I clear my throat and stand up from the swings. Walking away quickly.

"Where are you going?" Huey snorts.

"Bye." Is all I say. I'm not making a fool of myself no more.

I get to the court, "Guys, I'm going to head home. Got homework to do.""

"Ok girl."

"See you." My friends tell me bye.

I stroll past Riley on the ground and turn to Cindy, "What's up with him."

Cindy goes to say something but Riley interrupts, "Your fucking friend sacked me in the balls!"

I giggle a bit, "That's funny Mariah?" I press my lips together in a thin line. I told him to stop calling me that.

"Yes, yes it is. You probably deserved it."

I turn to Cindy, "He did, he grabbed my boobs."

I chuckle, "See you later Cin."

"Text me." She replies and I nod my head before walking off.

Huey's POV

The sun is setting and I'm taking my time to get home. Exploring the new area I'm currently living in. It's different from Chicago. I don't think I'll ever get used to Woodcrest, it's small and immensely white. Well at least the public high school is diverse I guess… There's a nice breeze flowing, that's how you know summer would be over pretty soon. My feet stop when I see a hill, I don't know why but my feet take me up there.

Once up at the top, I'm surprised to see who is up there, more shocked at what she is doing. Jazmine gracefully dancing to whatever music is playing in her earbuds. She is so into it that she doesn't even notice me standing there. I lean against the only tree up there. It's a big oak tree maybe? Me being here is probably wrong and invasive because this seems to be a private spot. But Jazmine's movements were so swift and soft but sharp to turn away from. I'm too intrigued for me to move my feet. I hate to admit it but I am mesmerized.

Jazmine's POV

You really know how to make me cry

When you gimme those ocean eyes

I'm scared

I've never fallen from quite this high

Fallin' into your ocean eyes

Those ocean eyes

Billie Eillish's Ocean Eyes is fading out. I do a spin to finish my freestyle. This song is pleasant and Billie's voice is so angelic. It's a masterpiece I had to dance to it. Slow clapping interrupts my thoughts and I pop my eyes open. I dance with my eyes closed sometimes when I'm really feeling the music. I take out my headphones, 'No freaking way what is he doing here?' I immediately grab my sweater to cover up my body, I'm wearing tights and a tank top. I don't want him checking me out that will only make this situation more awkward.

"You scared the shit out of me! How'd you even find this place?" I rush out.

"I was just trying to learn the area… You can really dance." Huey compliments.

"T-thanks." I reply, shyly. Blushing profoundly, his gaze is intense. Good thing I can play if off as me just being out of breath.

"You on the dance team?"

"Um there isn't one." I respond a bit confused, as to why he cares.

"Well what about cheer or something?" I look at Huey crazy. 'Is he serious?'

"You're a gymnast too. I can tell from your body and muscles. Didn't take me seeing you dance to know that." His eyes rake over my body. So he's been watching me?

"What are you? A chiropractor?" I scoff. He didn't know anything, he's probably just a jerk that looks at girls' bodies. Secretly though I wanted him to watch me.

"You've got jokes." He notes, sarcastically.

I cross my arms, "Yeah and anyways I can't join the cheer team."

"Why not? Dance is a part of cheerleading too, right?" Me as a cheerleader? I can't even picture myself being one of those extremely perky, peppy, or mean girls. Plus I could barely keep myself up straight around Huey, how the hell was I going to cheer for him? Along with his teammates at his football games in front of all those people in the stands.

"Mhmm well what's with the nice guy act? Why do you care?" I put my hands on my hips.

"I don't. Do what you want but you are deflecting...You know what I think?"

I arch an eyebrow, 'What's that?"

"You care too much about what other people think." I scoff at Huey's belief about me.

"No I don't."

"Prove it then. Try out for the team."

"I will!" I retort furiously. He thinks he has me all figured out 'Tsk I'll show him.' Huey smirks and walks away. I instantly regret blurting that out so impulsive but I couldn't back down. Not on my word.
