Disclaimer: I don't own anything except the idea for the story. That's all.
I was thinking about rule against songfics. This is what occurred. Hope you like it- and I mean that. Credits go to The Mamas and the Papas, especially Mama Cass, who performed this song- California Earthquake, just so you know.
"I heard they exploded," Rolanda said to the only person left in the Staff Room. "The underground blast, that is- the one they were talking about. The one that supposedly didn't exist." She sat across from him, watching the light from the fire glancing against his pale skin. "What they say's gonna happen," she waited for a response, "Gonna happen at last."
"That's the way it appears," Severus finally growled.
"They tell me the fault line runs right through here," she continued- she didn't know why she kept talking, but she did.
"That may be," he leaned back and took a long draught from his flask. "So that may be."
"What's gonna happen, gonna-"
His voice softened as he interrupted her, "Happen to me. To us. To everyone." He looked her square in the eye, and she had to close her eyes to keep tears back as she nodded.
"Everyone's worried about what will happen- happen to them, to their families, to their friends and lovers… even just acquaintances."
"That's the way it appears," he said, his voice devoid of emotion once again.
"They tell me the fault line runs through here," she repeated, her voice shaky.
Severus grabbed her hand and held it in both of his.
"Atlantis will rise, Sunset Boulevard will fall," she laughed cynically, probably out of fear. "Where the beach used to be, won't be nothing at all."
"That's the way it appears." Severus smiled at the reference to Sunset Boulevard- he heard that Rolanda had spent a number of years in America before returning to teach at Hogwarts.
She grew impatient with his nonchalance at the situation. "Severus, they tell me that the fault line runs right through here!"
He stood and pulled her into his arms, his voice taking on a calming quality. "So that may be,"
"I- I'm scared, Severus."
"That may be." He muttered simply, tightening his hold on her.
"What's gonna happen to you? What's gonna happen to me?"
"Rolanda," he started to release her, but she stepped into him, burying her head in his chest.
"Don't, please! Please, I need… I need you right now, Severus!" she sobbed, "It doesn't matter what happens right now, just as long as you hold me."
"That's the way it appears," he tried to joke, and she smiled.
"They tell me the fault line runs right through here."
So I wrote this as a joke- I thought I did a pretty good job! I want to know what you think about the 'fault line'- what do you think it's referring to? I know it sounds like a corny English/Language Arts assignment, but I'm really curious!
