Chapter 58 – Another Shot
So they drove all the way towards the central hospital. They both were so tired. Damn this had to happen, in the middle of the night!
Finally they got to the hospital. Mitsuiro parked the car, and so they were ready to go. They checked into the polyclinic and sat down to wait.
Mitsuhrio yawned. Inuyasha looked at him and turned his ears back.
"Oh don't worry, I don't blame you for this", the man smiled and pet the boy's back. Inuyasha bared his fangs.
A door opened.
"Inuyasha Kita", said a man's voice.
"Come", Mitsuhiro said and got up from the bench. Inuyasha followed him.
They got into the room. The man inside was the same doctor that had performed Inuyasha's blood transfusion.
The duo sat down, and so did the doctor.
"Sorry for this", Mitsuhiro apologized.
"Don't worry about it, I get calls almost always when I'm on duty", the doctor smiled and nodded. "But now! I can see you, Inuyasha, have turned back to you demon form."
Inuyasha turned his ears back.
"So this means the blood transfusion doesn't work on him, hm?" Mitsuhiro wondered.
"Not necessarily. There is one more way. It's like dialysis. You will come here regularly for transfusion. Then he will be in his hanyou for 2-4 weeks, then turns back. The thing is that you will come back here for an another transfusion every month's, let's say... first Monday."
"But what if he turns back, like, a week or two before the next transfusion?" Mitsuhiro asked.
"Unfortunately that can't be helped. Once a month is the absolute maximum we can give the transfusion to him. But don't worry, I am pretty sure the blood will take effect for at very least two weeks."
"And what about the side-effects of the transfusions? Will he always end up in the ICU?"
"I don't think so. His body has got used to the human blood somewhat, and the amount of blood he will be getting from now will be a lot smaller than last time."
"Okay now, what's going to happen?"
"We'll do the transfusion right now. After that we will take some blood tests and you will be able to leave in a few hours if the blood looks good and he gets no fever."
So Inuyasha and Mitsuhiro were escorted to the infection ward. Inuyasha didn't need to change his clothes. A nurse put a cannula in his hand, and soon a drip stand with a bag of blood was brought in. She connected the blood bag with the cannula. So the transfusion could start.
"Now, this time you will get one bag of the blood, and it will take less than an hour to get it transferred", the doctor said. "Any questions?"
"Actually..." Mitsuhiro mumbled. "It was very hard to find the right blood for Inuyasha, hm?"
"Yes. The blood donor was found from Germany only a few months ago. Why?"
"If Inuyasha will need the blood regularly for the rest of his life, which is twelve packs - twelve liters - a year..."
"Don't worry about that", the doctor nodded and put his hand on Mitsuhiro's shoulder. "He has already donated twelve bags, they will last in the freezer for a year. He has also devoted to keep donating blood til the end", he smiled.
"... And how old is he?"
"Well, about your age, somewhat over forty."
"Inuyasha will most probably live longer than that."
"Mind that things can change. We can find either more right doners, or maybe also some new cures for him."
Mitsuhiro smiled and nodded.
As it was about midnight when they had arrived at the hospital, they were both tired. Inuyasha had fallen asleep, and Mitsuhiro is fighting to stay awake, sitting in his chair. He was on the edge of being awake, until he shook his head and rubbed his head. Then he gave a look upon Inuyasha... Yes! Yes! The stripes on his cheeks were gone! But as he was sleeping, he couldn't see his eyes, but Mitsuhiro trusted they were already golden instead of red.
Suddenly, one machine, the pump which dosed the dripping blood's pressure, started beeping. Mitsuhiro turned towards it right away, but he knew what this meant. It meant the transfer was done – the blood bag was empty.
Mitsuhiro pressed the red button hanging from the bed. It was the button to call a nurse. And in a few seconds, a female nurse jogged in. Mitsuhiro didn't even need to say anything – he just pointed first at the pump, then at the blood bag.
The nurse took an ear thermometer out from her pocket and started getting closer to the boy.
"Hey, I wouldn't do that", Mitsuhiro stopped her. "First we must wake him up carefully, or he might attack you."
"...Maybe you should do it?"
"I think so."
So, Mitsuhiro gently placed his hand on the boy's chest and pressed it. Inuyasha opened his eyes. His Golden eyes
"Good, eh, night, Inuyasha", Mitsuhiro grinned.
"Now what's going on?" Inuyasha mumbled and yawned.
"We will check your temperature and take some blood tests", the female nurse said. "You can check the fever", she said, turning towards Mitsuhiro, "and I will get the laboratorian here. Just a minute."
As the nurse got away, Mitsuhiro turned at the patient, smiling, and put the thermometer in the boy's ear. It beeped in a few seconds.
Mitsuhiro looked at the screen, smiling.
"No fever. Now we just have to wait for the laboratorian."
Inuyasha nodded, sighed and closed eyes again.
It didn't take long for the laboratorian to arrive. Inuyasha was barely awake and didn't react in any way when he was stung. He was so used to needles after all.
It didn't long for the doctor to arrive either. He smiled and nodded.
"Everything is perfect – you can leave right away. But if you want to, you can stay for the night, if you are too tired to drive back at the moment."
"We're not stayin'", Inuyasha said fast. Mitsuhiro grinned and pet his shoulder.
The duo were back to the car within a few minutes. Mitsuhiro started the car and they got on their way.
"I was supposed to be in the morning shift tomorrow..." Mitsuhiro said. "But I guess you understand I need to have some rest after this night adventure. I'll come the day after tomorrow."
"Kay", Inuyasha nodded.
It was a bit over 5 AM when they got to Kuroshima. Both were so tired. They took the elevator and got into the ward.
"You should go back to bed", Mitsuhiro told Inuyasha. Inuyasha nodded and got on his way to his room.
"So, how did it go?" Kaede asked. Mitsuhiro told her everything. How Inuyasha will be getting regular transfusions monthly for the rest of his life, and how he still might be in his demon form every month from 1-2 weeks.
"So, I'll will be off tomorrow", Mitsuhiro said as he was about to leave. "Of course you can call me if you get some trouble with Inu."
"I highly doubt about it", Kaede nodded with a smile. "See ya!"
Inuyasha opened his room's door carefully. It was all dark, Miroku was sleeping. Inuyasha got in his bed and curled up in his blanket.
Morning came. The greetings were tannoyed, and the patients started getting up.
Miroku was changing this pajamas to his casual wear. Inuyasha wore those same hospital clothes every day, changing them only after shower, and usually wore just pants.
"Say, Inuyasha", Miroku spoke as he was putting his socks on. "Where were you last night? I saw you leave at midnight and when I woke up to go to bathroom, you were gone."
"The central hospital", Inuyasha answered.
"What? Why?"
"I turned back. Back to a demon."
Miroku stared at his friend his eyes wide.
"So... The blood doesn't work after all?"
"When we were drivin' back here with Mitsu, he said we will gather up and tell everythin' you need to know about this new me when he come's to work on Wednesday."
"Whoa... Can't wait for it!"
