Chapter 1
The ink poured across the pages as he wrote down hundreds of words. Alexander sat at his desk as usual filling out hundreds of pages at four am in the morning. His eyelids felt as if they were about to give way. Suddenly his head slammed onto the table in tiredness. The sound echoed around the room and down the hall. His head shot up, immediately after. Alexander heard quiet footsteps coming down the hallway as he straightened himself back up. Alexander heard a knock on the door and peered up to see his wife Eliza standing there. Her face was filled with worry and annoyance as she glared at him.
"Alexander, do you see the time! It's four am. This isn't healthy for you to stay up doing work to this hour everyday. You need to walk and move around," Elize warned. Alexander sighed and stood up out of his chair. He stretched his arms out into the air, feeling his muscles loosen.
"Maybe I should go to sleep," he muttered as he tidied up a few of the papers. Before leaving the office, Eliza stopped him at the door.
"You know what? First thing tomorrow morning you are going on a long walk around town."
Alexander stood there thinking for a moment. But it's winter! I hate winter! She knows that I hate the cold and it's my birthday… no no, she can be scary when she's mad. I'll just go… Alexander knew that this would be a battle he would lose either way so he agreed. Eliza seemed satisfied.
Eliza walked out to their bedroom, Alexander followed. Eliza slipped back into bed and began sleeping soundly almost as soon as she hit the pillows. Alexander watched her chest rise and fall as she slept. He quickly changed his clothes that were covered in ink stains and creases and pulled on his night clothes. He came under the covers with Eliza after feeling a cold draft from the window. He lay there for a while, feeling nothing but cold. The blanket did not seem to provide any warmth and so Alexander lay there awake and shivering. He didn't know how Eliza slept so peacefully in this dreaded weather. Soon tiredness weighed down his eyes and they shut for a few hours.
Alexander woke up bright and early, even though he went to bed nice and early in the morning. Light streamed in through the curtains and the cold air seemed to circulate the room. He looked over to the brass clock that sat on the dresser opposite to their bed. 6am it showed. Alexander groaned remembering what Eliza had said in his study. He looked over to his side to see her still sleeping peacefully. He stepped out of the bed feeling the cold floorboards on his feet. He walked over to the window and noticed the window was covered in a thick layer of frost. He wiped away some of the condensation with his hand to reveal a white front yard. Snow had fallen that night which meant that there would be sheets of ice on the ground.
Alexander had never really adjusted to the cold harsh winters. In the Caribbean winters were barely more than a cool breeze but here… well here it got down to the negatives and snow fell. Alexander hated this season ever so much. The cold snow, the frost and the icy winds that the north brought. He was on break for a month from the raging war between the British and America. A few of his fellow comrades had come home too. Lafayette, Hercules and John Laurens. George Washington himself had come home for a few weeks to spend time with his wife, Martha Washington. Alexander didn't want to leave the battlefield but when Winter came the decision to take some time off became very easy. Christmas had already been and it was now early January. Alexander was told to relax, however there was so much work that had built up, he just had to finish it and so he quietly changed into some warm clothes and crept back to the study. He sat down in his chair and began writing again.
The words seemed to flow endlessly onto the pages, with new ideas forming inside his head. Even on his birthday he worked. Soon his stomach began to rumble in hunger. Alexander knew what hunger felt like very well. Before he had become an orphan, Alexander and his mother could not afford anything and so he would go to sleep hungry most nights. So he didn't mind too much about feeling hungry now. Alexander pursued writing until he felt the presence of his wife standing at the door. Just as he guessed, she was there.
"Now, I see you've woken up. How about you go on that nice walk?"
Alexander gulped. He didn't want to go out there into the winter wonderland.
"Eliza, I am not going out there! Have you seen the weather!" he protested. Eliza rolled her eyes.
"It's not that cold and you need exercise. Besides, it will give you a chance to wear the new coat you got," Eliza retorted. Alexander stood up and walked over to Eliza.
"It's my birthday, shouldn't I be allowed to do what I want?" he commented. Hoping to win her over with the old "it's my birthday" trick.
"You can do what you want outside," Eliza explained while pointing to the window.
"But!" Alexander tried one last time.
"No buts, you are going out there," Eliza responded.
Alexander hung his head low as he walked to the front door. Eliza proceeded after him and handed him the coat. The brown coat was thin and in Eliza's opinion, was warm enough for snowy weather. Alexander pulled the coat over his shoulders and put on his black boots. Eliza opened the door and gestured with her hand for him to go. Alexander slowly walked out pausing as the cold air blew into his face. The steps had thin sheets of ice lathered on them and shattered when he stepped on them. He looked back at Eliza who was waving.
"Bye! Have a nice time on the walk that you definitely wanted to go on," she called.
Alexander huffed in annoyance at her sarcasm. He trudged through the thick layer of snow that lay on the small path that led up to their house. Noting that he would need to shovel it away later.
"Winter… why my birthday has to be in winter I will never know…" he grumbled as he walked down the street with his hands buried in his pockets. As he walked down to the corner of the street an icy chill blew right through his coat. How is this supposed to keep me warm!? Alexander walked on feeling his coat fail to shield him from the winter chills. As he walked on, he turned onto a small street and walked towards the park that was at the end.
In his mind he had it all planned out. Take a shortcut through the park, walk over to Hercules' shop, buy a coat and then go home. His plan seemed simple and yet it was already becoming drastically complicated. As Alexander walked along the path he didn't notice the ice that had formed underneath the snow. Suddenly he miss-stepped and slid across the ice. He felt his legs become unbalanced as he slid from side to side. Alexander attempted to balance himself with his arms but that failed too. He saw the park fence and tried to turn around.
"AHHH!" he yelped before he slammed into the fence, causing him to slip and fall back into his back-side. He slowly moved across the edge of the ice sheet from the momentum, spinning around in small circles. No no no no no! Did that just happen! Did anyone see! Oh god! I'm so cold now and wet! Ahhhh!
Alexander attempted to stand up but the ice would not allow him and so he slid back down.
"Why have you created this horrible season mother-nature! WHY!" he cursed aloud. Alexander sat on the ground for a few moments longer after several attempts to stand up. Just as Alexander was about to try to stand up again. He heard the sound of a strong gallop heading towards him. He turned his head and saw a chocolate brown mustang with a familiar figure riding on top heading straight towards him. Alexander face-palmed himself.
"Oh boy…" he sighed. The horse came closer and closer until Alexander could clearly identify the rider's bushy eyebrows.
"Washington, sir," Alexander saluted while sitting on the ground. George gave a curt nod and then dismounted his horse.
"You ok down there, son?" George asked, with a breathy laugh.
"Im… er… great down here. Just umm… inspecting the ground, sir."
Alexander was horrible at making excuses when it came to speaking to his general. What type of an excuse was that! That was completely pathetic!
George smiled, he reached out his hand for Alexander to grab. George hauled Alexander up within a matter of seconds. As Alexander stood up, he gripped onto the park fence.
"Why are you out here and not at home on your birthday? Everyone knows you hate the cold," George questioned. Alexander thought for a moment on how he was going to explain to his commanding general.
"Well… you see, my wife Eliza decided to kick me out of the house and make me go for a walk this morning with only ONE coat. It's absolutely freezing out here and I have work to do, but she wouldn't listen. So I agreed and now I'm here in the cold and I hate winter so so so much!" he blurted out in one breath, completely forgetting how to speak to his commanding general. Alexander's eyes widened after he realised he had just talked like that.
"S-sorry sir," he apologised. George smiled and mounted his horse again.
"It's fine Alexander, I best be off now. Take care!" George said just before leaving. Alexander waved goodbye and continued walking down the street.
As he walked on several paths, he had a watchful eye looking out for the sparkling ice. Alexander shivered under his coat, so he hurried to Hercules' shop as fast as he could.
