The Real Robert Chase

It was quiet. The soft beep of the monitor the only thing keeping him awake. Rubbing his eyes he slowly forced himself up. Stumbling towards the patients bed he held onto the side for the extra bit of support his legs needed. Glancing at the monitor. No change. Stumbling back towards the chair he looked at the empty bed beside the patient wanting to throw him self on to it and let his body succumb to sleep his body needed. Knowing he had a job to do he let himself fall back into the chair, not caring about the sharp pain shooting threw his back, just glad he was once again sitting down.

As the night drew on tiredness engulfed his body. His arms drooped along side of the hospital chair and his one alert eyes now fought the battle to stay open. Looking at the clock across the room he sighed slumping deeper into his chair.

He barely heard the slight click and the sound of the sliding down moving along the groves that held it in place. Lifting up his head he saw Cameron standing in the doorway. Stepping into the dark room her soft voice filled the combined space.

"Chase?"

Chase didn't answer, merely moved his head to let her know he had heard her.

"Chase, are you ok?"

"I'm fine" Tiredness evident in his voice.

It wasn't until Cameron took a few steps forward that she saw the terrible state he was actually in. Dark circles stood out against his pale face. His posture was as though each inch of his body was being weighed down by a tonne of bricks and his once blue eyes had turned a light shade of grey. Even his beautiful blonde hair looked worn out.

"You should go home, you don't have to be here" The concern plastered on her face, She had seen him like this before. He hid behind this brick wall, protecting him, not letting people see the real him.

"I'm fine" The tone of his voice coming out harsher then he had intended causing Cameron to take a few steps backward.

"Chase you ha…" She was cut off by the increasing change of levels in Chase's voice.

"I'm fine!" Throwing his hands up in frustration.

"No Chase you're not fine!" Her voice reaching the same level as him, angry at his stubbornness.

Chase immediately regretted the decision to stand up. His legs buckled under the weight of his body sending his head crashing into the side of the bed before connecting with the cold tiled floor. Cameron was by his side within seconds. A small moan escaped his lips as she lightly touched the broken skin. Carefully she started to wipe away the crimson spots the trickled down his face.

"Allison, stop" Chase's voice was firm. Ever since day one she had slowly been breaking down the wall, brick by brick. So pushing her away was the only thing he could do. Before it was too late… Before the wall was gone…

"Chase I need to clean your cut" She continued to help until Chase began to push her hand away.

"Stop" His voice once again rising.

"Chase" Her voice was low, trying not to ad fuel to the fire.

"No!" Screaming as loud as his tired body would let him. But Cameron did not move from the position she was in. There was no way that she was going to leave Chase alone when he was like this.

"Robert" Her voice was soft, almost pleading. Her hand reached out to grab his. After along while Chase turned to face her. Her heart broke seeing the pain and fear his eyes held. She saw it. She was sure she was the only person who had seen it. A little bit longer than the other times, if only for a few seconds. But she had seen it.

She had seen the real Robert Chase…
