Tails wasn't doing well. After leaving Sonic and Amy alone, he had basically beelined straight to his home, where he had spent the past 15 minutes in tears in his bedroom. He almost missed the buzz of his spare communicator. He read the name:
AMY
By now, he was certain that Sonic would have told her what had happened, so he wasn't ready to face her yet, so he just let it buzz. She gave up after a few more buzzes. Or so he thought.
It was only a matter of seconds before she called again, and again he ignored it.
Then again. And again.
It wasn't until her sixth attempt when he finally worked up the guts to answer.
"He-Hello?"
"Tails! Finally! Are you ok?"
Ok, that was unexpected.
"Why would you care? I assume Sonic's already told you."
"You're right, he has, but he wants to talk to you about it, not me. In person."
"I'm not sure I'm ready to get rejected, Amy, especially not face-to-face."
"Who said you'd be getting rejected? I only said that he wanted to talk to you."
"You weren't there when it happened, Amy. You didn't see how he reacted. He practically shut me out right there!"
"Oh, believe me, he told me that too, and I've already given him the stern talking to. He's ready to talk now, and I really think you should listen."
"I… still don't know. I'm scared."
Suddenly, it seemed as though Amy lost her patience.
"Miles 'Tails' Prower, if you don't get over here now, I'll have to come and drag you here myself! I really don't want to, because you're my friend, and because I don't want to leave Sonic alone with his ankle in this state. But, even if things don't go the way you want them to, isn't it better to just get it all over with, instead of torturing yourself with the 'what ifs'? Just trust me on this one, Tails. I promise it won't be as bad as you're thinking."
He was silent for a second. She was right. The reason he was scared was because he didn't know how Sonic was going to react. Better to just find out… right?
"Ok, ok. I'll be there as soon as I can."
As soon as she ended the call with Tails, Amy made to call some doctors (of the non-Egg-related variety), to see if she could get some assistance regarding Sonic, but the blue speedster was quick to tell her to wait.
"Sonic, that ankle needs more medical attention than just me. Just let me call a doctor to help you."
"For all we know, Amy, our favourite Egghead could have figured out our frequency. If he hears that I'm stranded here, unable to fight him, he might come to finish the job, our attack our friends without me to defend them. I don't wanna risk that."
"I suppose that's fair enough, but what are we supposed to now? We can't just leave you here to heal on your own."
"I assume Tails is on his way back?"
"Yes, he is."
"There you go, then. Once we've had our little chat, he can airlift me to a doc, or bring a doctor out here. All you'd need to do is find the nearest hospital."
"Fair enough. Well, I'll let you ask him."
"Speaking of Tails, how are you coping with all this? You seem to be taking this revelation quite well."
"I mean, my feelings for you are not really a secret, and they haven't changed. I still wish you would have chosen me, but I'd rather be here to support you as a friend, rather than get angry and lose that friendship. Same goes for Tails." Her demeanour changed suddenly. "But, if I get so much as a hint that one of you has a broken heart because of the other, they'll suddenly find me a lot less friendly. Are we clear?"
"Crystal."
It was a few minutes later when Tails finally arrived, although he still landed a fair distance away, hiding behind his namesakes as he approached the two hedgehogs. Amy walked over to him, holding out her hand to guide him over. He shakily accepted, before the two of them began the short walk back to the injured hero. Though, for Tails, it felt like a marathon, considering how quickly his heart was beating. Amy quickly noticed his apprehension, and gave his hand a comforting squeeze.
"It's alright, Tails. Just a few more steps." Amy stole a quick glance towards Sonic, and she immediately knew, judging by his face alone, that he was feeling guiltier than ever, now that he was seeing the way his reaction, or lack thereof, had hurt the poor fox.
As soon as Tails arrived beside Sonic, Amy gently pushed on his shoulder, silently instructing him to sit, which he did.
"Right. You to have a lot to talk about, so I'm going to go and give you some privacy. I'll stay close, though, so just wave or shout if you need me." As she turned, she fired another death glare Sonic's direction, unseen by Tails, as a reminder of her earlier warning, before she turned and walked away, back to where Tails had landed.
"So, Tails, about what happened earlier—"
"I'm really sorry, Sonic. It just felt right in the moment. I should have stopped myself."
"Tails."
"It's just, you mean so much to me, and all the things you said earlier were just so nice and—"
"Tails!"
"But, I know now that it was wrong. You clearly didn't like it. I feel like I've ruined our friendship."
"MILES!"
The fox was silent.
"Just listen. I wasn't angry. I was just shocked. I mean, I didn't even know you liked guys!"
"Neither did I."
"Ah ah. You had your turn." Sonic playfully ruffled the fox's hair. "Honestly, Tails, everything I said was true. You really do mean a lot to me, too. That kiss made me question a few things about myself. Including my thoughts about you. I've always felt different towards you, compared to the others. I hadn't quite realised what those feelings were until today."
"What-What are you trying to say?"
"Basically, that you were right: you did ruin our friendship. I don't want to just be friends anymore. I want us to be more than that." Immediately, Tails' face erupted into the brightest shade of crimson Sonic had ever seen. It was adorable.
"R-Really?!" The fox had practically squealed that word, and he was certainly not doing a very good job of hiding his wagging tails. Sonic couldn't help but chuckle, as he leant in towards the fox.
"Come here, you." And, like Tails had done to him earlier, Sonic planted a kiss square on the surprised kit's lips. Neither of them heard Amy's cheering in the background. It wasn't a long or passionate kiss, but the message it conveyed meant more than either of them could put to words. Well, other than the ones that came next.
"Miles 'Tails' Prower, I love you."
"I love you, too, Sonic the Hedgehog."
Then they kissed again.
Don't worry, the story isn't over! I've still got more when that came from! And, yes, I'm well aware that this chapter may not be as long as the others and is very dialogue heavy, but those chapters are sometimes necessary. And, I feel like I did a good enough job with this one!
Also, I feel the need to mention that title drop! I've been waiting to use that line in the story itself! And, before people start talking about ages, and the fact that Sonic is canonically 7-8 years older than Tails (which would make him 20-21 here), I'll say that this story, like my other Sonic story ('Game Over'), will not be delving anywhere near an M rating (unless that's something people would like to see), so the ages don't really matter. At least, that's my opinion. If canon Amy wants to chase Sonic at the age of 12, then Tails can do the same thing at 13!
Ok, now that that's cleared up, thanks to yorel for following this story and adding it to your favourites! It always makes me feel good about my work when other people show their appreciation like that, so once again, thank you! Although, I have to mention that I might be disappearing for a few days, but I'll definitely be back before the end of the week. Ciao for now!
