Chapter Forty: Stay (by Mayday Parade)

Chapter Summary: On the safety of the Oro Jackson, the alliance still has to get past the Marines who are blocking their path. Only to be stunned as Sengoku makes an order. Mihawk starts to realize Shanks' condition might be more serious as Ace recalls what happened in the final moments on the island.

Rouge grimaced as she grabbed at her shoulder again as Marco weaved through the oncoming Marine fire. Each movement sending pain splintering through her shoulder and down her back and into her neck. She could feel the blood moving down her back. There wasn't much that she could do right now. Their safety and the safety of the others were their main priority.

Rouge had been seconds away from greeting death. Though, she couldn't say she wasn't interested in exactly who the man that attacked her was. On the other hand, she had a bad feeling in the pit of her stomach. She may have not been on the seas for going on twenty years now, but she had kept herself up the best that she could in her down time. She never even sensed him coming and she was one of the best with Observation Haki.

She could count on one hand how many people she knew for a fact that could mask their presence.

The man's words echoed in her mind. Almost taunting like as the smirk that had been on his face. She could almost feel the chill going down her spine again. He held no emotion in his eyes as he had shot her, teasing her with her life when the gun was pointed at her head.

It was targeted. She knew that.

Somehow, she knew this wouldn't be the last time they saw this man. They would see him again. He had said he was a Devil Fruit user. What she didn't know was his power. That could be dangerous. Devil Fruit abilities were almost unpredictable. Sometimes they could appear as one thing but be something completely different entirely.

Part of her wondered if the man had indirectly told her what his power was. Hell, she didn't have a clue who he was but here he was. On the same island where they were trying to get Shanks back. Get to Ace. It didn't feel like no coincidence. He did say he was after blood of his own. With the mention it felt like two options, and she hated one of them.

Teach or Shanks.

She wasn't positive. There could have absolutely been a chance that those two had nothing to do with this man's objectives. It was a terrifying thought to know there was a man that powerful with ulterior motives, but the motives weren't known to anyone. It was always better to be secretive on the seas, but she supposed her mind was clouded with the thought of her son, her family being on this island right now in the mist of the Buster Call.

A Buster Call still felt completely extreme for an altercation between two pirate crews.

This man didn't seem like a Marine. Not even Cipher Pol. It felt too far from that. His question to her was weighing heavy on her mind. She didn't recall ever meeting a man or even a boy that matched his description. She was a well-known name, so there could always be a possibility. She couldn't remember every person she came across.

Her question was: why was he here? How did he know where they were? How did he know Teach had abducted Shanks from Sabaody Archipelago? The only thing that she could think of was, he was watching. Now, it was just who.

It seemed like the only reasonable cause. He knew too much.

"What's on your mind, Commander Rouge?" Marco questioned.

Rouge exhaled, "That man."

Marco hummed, twirling through the air again to miss another cannon ball before they were flying above the ocean now. "He was dangerous."

"Yeah." Rouge muttered, "I can't help but wonder… why was he here?"

Marco turned his head enough to look at her, the calculating look on his face. "Well, he attacked you. My best guess would be he was working in the shadows for Teach."

Rouge contemplated it for a second. "What I don't understand with that theory… he wasn't with Teach. I wasn't even sure exactly where Teach was, yet he attacked me. It almost felt personal."

"Have you ever met him?" Marco questioned.

Rouge shook her head, "Not that I can remember. I feel like I would remember those eyes."

Marco made a noise, "They were an incredibly bright blue. Those would be hard to miss. It was the one major thing I noticed about him, and I only saw him for a few seconds."

"This might sound odd, but I think he might after been after Shanks." Rouge stated.

"Red-Hair?" Marco hummed. "Well, he does have a lot of enemies along with allies. It wouldn't surprise me if someone tried to take advantage of the fact he had been weakened by Teach."

Rouge paused, noticing the way that Marco was still relaxed. "Wait, have you seen him?!"

Marco nodded. "He's with Ace, Luffy, Sabo, Law, and Big Nose." He stated. Rouge felt the instant relief come to her. That meant they were all together. They were going to be safe. "He was perfectly fine when I left them. Though, they were fighting to get out of the burning forest. Red-Hair told me to go ahead of them and get to our nakama to warn them of the Buster Call."

Rouge still felt like she could breathe again. They were all together. They would get out of there. She didn't feel like she had to worry, even though as his mother, she would always be concerned for him. Worry if he's safe.

"That's good." Rouge muttered.

She stopped, looking down as she felt a flood of familiarity come over her. She couldn't place it, but it had directed her eyes to the ocean. It was almost like she could hear a voice.

"Marco, do you hear that?" She questioned.

The Alpha hummed, looking down before she heard the audible catch of his breath. "Yeah, I do."

She surveyed the area. The ocean under them and the burning island before her eyes settled on a small part that had yet to catch fire. She narrowed her gaze as she noticed the way that the flames were moving. Like they were being repelled. "Wait… that's… Ace!" She exclaimed, pointing down at the side of the cliff.

She cried out the second she had seen all of them suddenly jump off of the side of the cliff. Heading straight for the water. "What the hell are they doing?!" Marco shouted.

Rouge had noticed it. The first who had been to do it. Buggy. Why would Buggy jump from a cliff towards something that could kill him? She blinked. Hearing the voice get louder. Her eyes widened the second the water's surface broke, and the Oro Jackson came out of the water, catching all of the falling pirates – and Revolutionary – from hitting the water.

"Oh my God." Rouge whispered.

"Isn't that—" Marco choked.

"The Oro Jackson." The Omega confirmed. "Roger's ship."

They were in fact safe.

She just didn't expect it to be from the Oro Jackson of all things.

She had never been happier to see that ship in her life.

X

He could feel just how much weaker he truly was. Shanks still didn't completely understand what was going on, but for the time being, he had felt completely safe. His mind was still venturing off to Ace and Luffy. Wondering if they were safe. Both had something being close to a handicap. Ace's pregnancy. Luffy's surgery that he had still yet to completely heal from.

Why did this have to happen?

If he had just been paying closer attention to what was happening at Sabaody, this never would have happened. He never did take into consideration that Teach had survived their attack. He had always been the person warning everyone else that something was up with him. Even Buggy seemed to notice something was off about him when they first met.

What if he never got out of this?

What if he didn't wake up?

Roger's laughter had pulled him out of his thoughts, looking over to see the Alpha grinning at him. "You're still worried."

"Of course, I am!" Shanks exclaimed, "They are my kids."

Roger smiled, sighing as he rested his arms on his legs. "That's just what it's like being a parent. Biological or not. The concern one has for children is always something that is great."

"You don't know the half of it." Shanks muttered.

"Those two are part you." Roger stated, "Which makes them part me. It doesn't matter what is going on with them. They will act no matter what. No matter what anyone tells them."

The Omega snorted, shaking his head. Roger was not wrong in the slightest. He had seen Roger in Ace at Marineford. He had seen Roger in Luffy plenty of times. It was a secret that they could only keep for so long. He froze. Rayleigh's actions and words from Marineford coming back to mind. Shanks turned to look back at Roger, "Hey, Dad… about Rayleigh…"

"You want to know why I asked him to adopt you." Roger said as a statement, rather than a question. Shanks nodded. He wanted to understand more. He actually had the chance to get that information himself directly from the source. Rather than just Rayleigh and Rouge. "I knew that if the World Government ever suspected I had a child, they would kill them and their mother without hesitation. Just for my blood. If the suspicion was ever put on Rouge, like I thought it would be, Rayleigh could step forward and claim that she was his mate and any children she had was his. It was the hardest decision I had ever had to make. It was the one thing I could do to ensure the safety of you, your mother, and any future children that could be involved somehow."

Shanks nodded. The understanding becoming clearer to him. On the bright side, Rayleigh had always been like a father to him, so it didn't feel much different to him. He just wanted to understand.

"There's something you need to see, Shanks." Roger said, reaching over and grabbing a hold of Shanks' wrist before the area around them had changed. Shanks felt like he was floating in the air before his heart skipped a beat. Noticing they were floating directly above water.

His body felt so light as he looked down, the air catching in his throat as he noticed Ace and Law fighting back against the flames that were trying to get closer and closer to them. "They… get out of there!" He screamed. Completely forgetting the fact that he knew they couldn't hear him.

His eyes surveyed the ones on the cliff. Ace. Luffy. Sabo. Law. Buggy. Mihawk and himself. They were all together again.

"Everyone else is safe." Roger muttered.

"They—" Shanks couldn't breathe.

"Are safe." Roger interjected. "A friend is on their way."

Shanks paused, looking over at Roger with uncertainty. Shanks hated the fact that there was nothing he could do. They could at least get into the water and off the island, but they would need another set of hands to keep the Devil Fruit Users above water. They were outnumbered at this rate. "A friend?"

Lacey and Shay weren't far from them, smiles gracing their faces as they watched the scene ahead of them. "It's okay, Momma!" Lacey exclaimed, almost flying through the air until she was moving, and her arms were wrapping around his shoulders, and she was practically sitting on his back. "You know this friend."

"A place you once called home." Shay added.

The air caught in Shanks' throat as Buggy pulled Ace over the side of the cliff, calling for the others to follow. "Wait—Buggy!"

"Buggy knows." Roger stated, moving them further down towards the ocean.

Shanks' eyes widened as he noticed that the water began to bubble underneath those who were free falling before the surface broke. He never dreamed that he would see that ship again. "The Oro Jackson…" He whispered.

"My last wish for the Oro Jackson was that she continues to be a home for my pack when I was gone. She is fulfilling that promise." Roger stated.

Lacey giggled, jumping slightly, almost amused by the events she was watching. Shay was also smiling as she let her feet touch down on the deck of the Oro Jackson. "She's been waiting for the day for when you guys needed her. That day was today." Shay said.

Shanks was in awe as he felt his own touch down against the wood. The familiarity that he felt seeing this ship again. The tears came to his eyes as he placed a hand over his mouth and shielded his eyes with his hair. Lacey had dropped down, rushing across the deck with her arms held out, giggling as she went. She stopped, standing right in front of where Ace was staring at the Oro Jackson in complete shock.

The others were scattered on the deck as Buggy yelled out to the ship, a laugh in his voice. Shanks looked away from Buggy long enough to look over to his children. Ace had a smile come to his face, laughing as he leaned back against the rail while placing a hand on his stomach. Before he knew it, all of them were laughing aside from Mihawk.

They were safe.

They got off the island.

"Oh, thank the seas." Shanks muttered, falling to his knees, and letting out a laugh of his own.

X

Whitebeard wished he could say he was surprised, but at the same time he wasn't. They had just gotten around the island, blocking off all the cannon fire that they could. Whitebeard even using his own powers to deflect many of them. Two of the Strawhats, Zoro and Sanji he figured out their names were, were also working in blocking them.

The Strawhats were all wanting to go back onto the island in search of their Captain. Many of the Hearts Pirates who had followed Law here were acting the same way. The only reason they hadn't left the ship was because Whitebeard had told them that they would be okay. He had been having this gut feeling since the ships pulled away from the island. Now, he understood it.

A smile came to his face as he stated, "Have to protect them even from the grave, huh, Roger."

It had shocked them all as the Oro Jackson had broken out of the water. Facing towards the Marine battleships that were heading their way. Sailing across the water as if the ship had been doing it every day for the last twenty plus years.

It had always been a mystery on what happened to Roger's ship after his capture. Bounty hunters and treasure hunters alike had gone in search of it. Pirates had looked for it. The Marines had looked for it. No one could ever find the Oro Jackson or what had happened to the ship. Many believed that Silvers Rayleigh had been protecting the ship for years. Others believed that she was given a funeral at sea by setting the ship on fire. Whitebeard had been a believer that she had been burned. He never did expect to see the Oro Jackson here, but he was happy to see that ship.

They had all watched as the remaining members of their alliance had jumped off of the cliff. Many of them concerned that the Devil Fruit users were going to drown in a last-ditch effort to escape the Buster Call. He should have known the second that he had seen that the ringleader had been Buggy.

Knowing that they were safe, he turned his attention towards the Marines, "Alright! Now we just need to break out of these Marines! Let's go boys! Give them hell!"

"Teach's ambition has been destroyed. It's over now. So, why don't you just run off and hide wherever the Revolutionary Army has been at."

"Not a chance." Dragon hissed. "I've heard of your power. You've done something to Shanks, so I can't just let you go."

Luca sighed as he noticed that Dragon hadn't moved, and he reached for the gun that he had in the back of his pants. "You really don't give up. Do you?" He sighed.

Dragon just kept a glare leveled on him. His facial expression not changing as he balled his fists. This man was trouble. Dragon had heard of him before. His power made him even more dangerous. The way that he played with people's lives. Cipher Pol and the World Government had been looking for him. He was a man similar to what Dragon worked like. His name known. His face known, but not one person actually being able to catch him.

"You talk about Blackbeard's reign of terror. What about your own?" Dragon questioned, letting the haki move around his fist, the air picking up around him. "What did Shanks have to do with that?"

Luca smirked, a dark glimmer coming to his eyes as he placed a hand on his hip. "Isn't it obvious?" Luca drawled. "What man wouldn't be obsessed with the person they were in love with? Let alone managed to do things that no one would ever suspect." Dragon gritted his teeth, raising his hand and sending the blast of haki towards Luca. The other Alpha dodged easily, landing on a nearby burning tree branch and looking down at him. "What a mother would do to protect the very children he brought into this world."

Dragon jumped out of the way as Luca jumped forward, a haki covered fist hitting the ground that he had been standing on. The rocks blistering and flying away as the Alpha landed back on his feet. "What are you talking about?"

Luca smirked. "One of my specialties are looking into the minds of the people I've come in contact with." He stated, his hand glowing again before he was lunging and heading straight for Dragon again. "I've seen everything. I've heard his thoughts. Poor Shanks doesn't even remember a thing, but he will. One day, he will realize just how far he's willing to go to protect those around him. It's a noble cause."

Dragon blocked the move, his wrist connecting with Luca's before he was turning them and flipping Luca over his back. The other Alpha landed on his feet, sliding across the ground. "You sound like a fan of his." Dragon replied. "Why do anything to him?"

Luca smirked, almost sadistic as he tilted his head, "What would be fun in just letting him slide out of here when I had the perfect opportunity. He was unconscious. Just laying there in a stream of water. I could have let Teach's body stay where it was. Let him burn. I could have let Shanks' pups find him. Teach had to learn that his so-called love was pointless. His drive to stay alive needed to be extinguished. I love to bring pain to Dracule Mihawk of all people, but I would rather not use Shanks to do so. It doesn't mean I won't."

Dragon paused.

This man wasn't after Shanks.

He was after Mihawk.

"Hawkeyes." Dragon stated, watching the way that the smirk on Luca's face got bigger. "You're after Hawkeyes."

Luca smirked again. "I'm after anyone I deem unfit for life. Hawkeyes' display at Marineford showed enough for me. Shanks' memories showed enough." His eyes started to glow a brighter blue for a moment as almost looked like he was ready to going into a psychotic episode. "Having the power of life and death at my fingertips… what do you think life means to Hawkeyes?"

Dragon growled. "I wouldn't know. I'm not him."

Almost as soon as that sadistic look was there, it was gone again. "I met Hawkeyes and Shanks a long time ago. Both of them at separate times. Hawkeyes only craves power. I can eliminate that."

Dragon wasn't exactly sure what to do. Apparently, the only person who could fix what happened to Shanks was this man, but he clearly had a vendetta against Mihawk. This didn't look good. He seemed to thrive off of the idea of death. This wasn't good. Dragon's attention was taken away from the man as a cannon ball was coming in their direction, forcing him to jump backwards.

By the time he looked back, Luca was gone.

Dragon cursed, he had to get out of here. He turned, heading for the cliff, and putting his haki through his body. He didn't have time to hunt him down. Not with the island about to disappear completely.

He had to get the message back to the others.

This was far from over.

X

As the adrenaline of the Oro Jackson appearing started to settle down, Buggy pushed himself up. Putting on the best face that he could. He was still scared. Still wanted to run in the opposite direction, but he couldn't do that right now. He had an obligation to fulfill.

"Alright, let's run for our lives!" Buggy exclaimed, rushing up the steps of the Jackson to get where the stirring wheel was.

They just had to make it past the Marines, and it would all be okay. This would be over.

He paused as he placed his hands on the wheel. The feeling of Roger being right there with him overflowing through his body. That small moment had given him all the strength that he needed to place his normal smirk on his face. The others were pushing themselves up, getting back to their feet.

"We're surrounded!" Sabo shouted, "The Marines are still going!"

"To hell with it!" Buggy barked, "We just break through!"

Ace smiled, looking up at him, "This is unlike you, Buggy."

Buggy narrowed his gaze. That felt like something Shanks would say to him.

He sighed. He had to do this. Shanks couldn't right now. Of course, the bastard had to be knocked unconscious just at a vital moment in time, but he was back with them. Time to return the Omega to his crew and they would part ways again. This meant nothing.

Buggy sharpened his glance again, "Let's go!"

He was shocked as it felt like the Oro Jackson was stirring itself, moving directly for the path that would give them a clear shot out of there.

"C'mon, Oro Jackson… one last time." Buggy whispered. "Let's have a last adventure together."

He's with you, Buggy. He's here to help.

The Alpha didn't know what to think of those words, instead pushing them to the side as he placed the grin on his face. Almost like a childhood dream coming true of being able to command the Oro Jackson. The ship that belonged to his Captain. The Pirate King's ship. This ship was legendary, and now it was at his control for the time being.

X

Sengoku's eyes widened as he stared ahead of him. Seeing the famed ship heading straight for them. "Fleet Admiral sir is that—" He heard someone say.

Garp was cackling, shaking his head, "Damn, Roger. You have more than one trump card."

Sengoku sighed. He didn't see or hear of any signs of the Blackbeard Pirates making it off the island. If they did, they would be taken care of. The Buster Call had done its job of destroying the island. The entire place up in flames now as he called for the cannon fire to cease.

Sengoku sighed. It was better to end it now.

He lifted the snail up to his mouth, creating contact with the battleships that they had brought with them. "Cease fire men!"

He gained the confirmations before he heard the objection of, "What about the pirates… and the Revolutionaries? This is the perfect opportunity to put an end to them all."

"It would be." Sengoku replied, making eye contact with Garp as the Vice Admiral turned to look up at him. "Four of those pirates are Government Sanctioned. They are not to be harmed. We cannot confirm which ships they are currently on. With the end of the war, it's better to let them pass." He paused as a few more questions were sent his way, but the cannon fire started to stop. Each ship one by one stopping and pulling their cannons back. "We will not wage war against this alliance. As far as I'm concerned, they've been through enough as well as all of you. All of you deserved a well-deserved vacation when we return to Headquarters."

With that, he placed the snail down.

This was the end of it.

Even if he would prefer to take down these pirates as the opportunity showed it. It was better not to lose any more favor from the world if word got out about this Buster Call.

Sengoku was getting too old for this.

Garp's family was bat shit crazy and somehow always was a magnet for trouble. He announced the call to start to turn the ships and head back to Headquarters. They had done their job. They were done here.

X

Law was absolutely stumped as they all watched as the Marine battleships started to turn, the cannon fire stopping as the ship started to get closer and closer to where they were. The ships that they had brought were getting closer to them to the point he could now see all of them. Pinpoint certain people on some of them.

He had even caught sight of Marco flying above the Moby Dick with Rouge on his back before he was swooping down and landing.

He felt almost as shocked as he did back in Sabaody Archipelago when he saw Silvers Rayleigh for the first time in person. He never dreamed of being on the ship of the deceased Pirate King. He had always believed the ship had been given an honorable death at sea. This was absolutely real. Underneath his feet was the wood deck. His hands touching the rail.

It was all real.

He sighed as the smile came to his face, Luffy standing next to him with that large smile on his face. Law felt his face flushing over as he let himself finally relax. It felt like all of this was finally over. That they could just relax for a while. "Straw Hat-ya—" He stopped as he felt lips pressing into his own.

Law smiled into it, reaching up and bringing his hands to either side of Luffy's face. The tingle that went down his spine as Luffy's arms looped around his waist.

Yeah, he must be dreaming.

Luffy was the first to pull away, snickering as he said, "Sorry, but that felt like the right thing to do."

The Omega let the genuine smile come to his face as he sighed, "If you are going to do this… you have to do it right."

Luffy hummed. "You bet I will."

Law chuckled, pulling away before he was turning to see that Ace and Sabo were pretending to look anywhere but them. Though it as obvious that they had been watching. For a moment, Law looked down at Ace's stomach. He had almost forgotten. Ace was his patient now, and the younger Omega deserved just as big of a scolding as Luffy did for aggravating his wounds again. "Freckles-ya." He said, moving away from Luffy and starting towards the other pirate. "I want to check you over really quick. You took a hell of a beating on that island."

Ace shrugged. "I feel perfectly fine. Great even."

Law shook his head, "You became my patient from the second I checked you over at Marineford." Law retorted, muttering out for his room to appear around them as he reached out and placed his hand on Ace's stomach. "I just want to make sure nothing went wrong. You might be a D, and D pregnancies tend to work out even in risky situations… but it's always better to check—" He paused as the air caught in his throat.

His reaction had Ace suddenly freaking out and exclaiming, "What's that noise for?! Is something wrong? Oh seas, something happened on the island that I can't remember—or it was something, I don't know, but please tell me they are okay!"

Law smiled, shaking his head in disbelief. "Perfect, actually." He stated. The heart beat—no heartbeats were strong. "It seems like I may have missed something before."

"What?" Ace questioned, calming down by the second.

"Freckles-ya…" Law whispered, looking up and making eye contact with Ace, "You're pregnant with twins."

Ace's eyes widened as his jaw dropped. Law was almost sure that Ace had stopped breathing entirely. Sabo moved, waving his hand right in front of Ace's face and gaining no reaction. "Ace? You okay?"

"Freckles-ya?" Law tried, pulling his hand away the second that he deemed that Ace's pregnancy was still perfectly intact. That surprised him. D's really were stubborn. Weren't they? "You look like you've seen a ghost."

"There are… two?" Ace questioned, his voice barely above a whisper. Law nodded. "And, you're sure." Law nodded again. The younger Omega's eyes widened even further as the reality dawned on him. "Oh God, I was only expecting one! But now there are two of them?! Does this world hate me?!"

"Actually, I think it rather likes you." Law stated, adjusting his sword on his shoulder. "Your pregnancy is still going perfectly when I suspect you shouldn't. You managed to survive a war and multiple attempted executions. Survived a Buster Call. Nah, I think the world actually does like you."

Ace exhaled sharply, rubbing a hand over his jaw. "Well, Marco is either going to love this or freak out."

"The more the merrier." Law muttered.

X

Mihawk listened in on the conversation. A soft smile coming to his face from seeing Ace's reaction. Well, that had been unexpected. Though, at this point in his life, he should always expect the unexpected.

He looked down at Shanks, wondering what he would say if he was awake at that moment. Shanks looked worse than he had before. His skin even paler, and his blood vessels even more black now. He wondered what would have happened if he had let the man actually come in contact with Shanks. Not actually breaking it off. He hadn't actually felt malicious intent, just the strange power that came off of him.

"What did you mean by something happened?" Sabo questioned.

Mihawk perked up, turning his head to look back at his sons. Ace was shuffling on his feet as he muttered out, "I thought I had lost them." Ace's voice cracked as he reached down, placing his hands over his still flat stomach. "I was bleeding and then there was this man. All I remember was feeling warm than I woke up and there was no blood. I thought I had dreamed it."

Mihawk felt the air catch in his throat. Ace didn't dream it up. He had made the connection quickly. The same man that did this to Shanks had gotten to Ace.

"You have no signs that something like that happened, Freckles-ya." Law stated, "It must have been subconscious."

Ace shook his head, "I don't think so. I think something happened, but I just don't remember it." Ace sounded so sure.

Mihawk looked back down at Shanks. It was the complete opposite. Ace looked like he was bursting with life. Much like Shanks was during his pregnancy with Luffy.

You're underneath a power, Shanks. Mihawk thought. I'm sorry I couldn't be there to protect you.

He had never thought in his life that he would ever have to protect Shanks. He had always been so powerful. Powerful enough to completely take care of himself and guard himself. It had been another reason that he hadn't been concerned with staying close by. He had been worried about bringing unwanted attention to all of them. Especially after what happened not long after Ace's birth. He couldn't risk it.

Now, they were here.

And he could lose Shanks completely.

It didn't feel like they have had enough time together.

Shanks still had so much life to live. Mihawk had so many moments that he wanted to have with them. They still had to recreate their bond. That was if Shanks wanted too. Shanks had happily married him. He had no doubt that Shanks would want to bond with him again.

He just had to figure out how to wake him up first.

He needed to find that man.

Devil Fruit powers were not easy to break. It almost felt like the only person who might be able to fix this without the need of the man was already dead.

Nothing felt right at the moment.

Now it was just time to reunite and get back to Sabaody. They would fix this. They had too.

Shanks had to come back to him.

Especially with the news for Ace. Shanks would want to throw a party. He needed to be here to see it himself. Mihawk refused to believe this is how all of it came to an end.

Though, now that he thought about it, he didn't believe that Shanks would wake up on his own.

When it had finally felt like it was all over, it was only truly just beginning.
