They stayed there like a picture in time. A moment they both could live in forever.
"I know them, I know who's coming" her voice was small, scared and tired. You could tell by one look at her that she was giving up. She was too tired to do much else.
He didn't say anything.
He stood from the floor bringing her with him in his arms. Walking them both over to the bed. Going to place her down, she grabbed onto his jacket with both hands, desperate to keep him there with her. Her protector from this big, cruel world.
They both shuffled over, curling up and resuming position. Tucking her head into his shoulder, she whispered to him.
"They were ready for me before I saw them coming. Knew who I was, where I would be, and prepared everything. I was down before I even knew what was happening."
The memories sprung to mind, the terror of it all, of being overpowered so easily, and knowing there wasn't any family close by. No one who would notice her disappearance. No one had noticed.
She gripped onto him tighter, and he pulled her impossibly closer in response. It was faint, but he was sure he could feel her terror.
"They were witches! They channelled my power, my energy, in order to become stronger as a group. To take on anyone and everyone. Trapped me in my own mind, a labyrinth of fears and memories all twisted together. Hell!"
Her eyes were glazed over, the memories playing like a movie across her face.
"They won't come near you ever again, I promise you. I will kill every one of them. You will always be safe here with me." He whispered back at her, breathing in her scent to stay calm.
No words were spoken after that, in his arms, in this very moment she was safe and that was all that mattered.
