CHAPTER 30
"Sorry, you are wrong, you can't be serious" Gabby told him. "I can't be pregnant."
"You're pregnant," the doctor stated one more time.
"But I can't," Gabby insisted. "Could check it again?"
He didn't like what he heard and left the room.
"Gabby, how you can't be pregnant?" Shay asked confused. "You and Casey never..." Gabby interrupted her.
"Of course we...". The doctor entered the room before she could finish.
"Look here… Gabriela Dawson," he looked at Gabby, "Is that your name?" he asked annoyed.
"Yes, it's my name, but they said I couldn't get pregnant. When I got pregnant the first time, it was like a miracle, and now...," she said, still surprised by the news.
"You got pregnant before?" Shay asked in awe.
"Yeah, long history, I'll tell you later..."
"Okay..." Shay was speechless.
"It seems there is someone up there looking out for you because the miracle happened for a second time," the doctor said smiling. Gabby touched her belly and tears formed in her eyes.
"I'm pregnant, Shay," she said looking at her friend. "I can't believe."
"Yes, you are. Congratulations, Mommy Dawson," Shay gave a kiss on her forehead.
"Okay... More two hours and you can go home."
"Thank you doctor and sorry, you know about everything..."
"Okay, I get it. Congratulations, Mrs. Dawson..." he left them alone.
"That's why I was feeling sick these days, but never crossed my mind that I could be pregnant," Gabby said.
"Are you happy?"
"Yes, I am..." Gabby kept quiet for a couple of seconds... Shay had a hunch about what Gabby could be thinking.
"Casey?"
"Do you think he'll be happy when he finds out it?" Gabby asked shyly.
"Of course, he will. When are gonna tell him?"
"I don't know, maybe when I feel better, we still have the trip going on... In two days we're gonna be in Florida..."
"You're right, I'm very excited about our trip. Now we are three!" They smiled at each other.
"His or her first trip..." Gabby got emotional.
/
"Chout in the house, good morning, guys!" Chout adjusted his bag on his shoulder as announced himself at Firehouse 51.
"Morning, Chout! What are you doing here?" Otis asked. They were all in the kitchen, except for Dawson, Matt noticed, assuming she was still in the locker room.
"I came to replace Dawson" he declared. For the first time, Casey looked up from the newspaper in his hands and looked at Chout.
"Why would you replace her?" Casey asked worriedly.
"She called sick today, that's the reason we have Chout here," Chief Boden informed his team.
Casey got worried the last time he had seen her, she didn't look well. Getting up from his seat, he came over to Shay, who was sipping her coffee as watching TV.
"Shay...," he sat down on the couch.
"Lieutenant...," she said as her eyes were fixed on the TV.
"She called you or you saw her? You know exactly how she is?" he was staring at Shay.
"She's fine, Lieutenant. Don't worry," she responded calmly.
"Shay, she is not fine, she missed work," he claimed.
"Yeah, I get that, but I'm her friend I know what's going on with her, believe me, she is okay. Besides, you two are not dating anymore, why bother? If you excuse me...," she turned off the TV and got up.
Casey was caught off guard by Shay's words. He ran a hand over his face... feeling frustrated he went to Severide's office...
"Hey, Shay said something to you about Dawson?" Casey asked.
"Not really, she came home around midnight last night, went straight to bed, then when I got up today, she had already left," he said.
"Okay..." he said thoughtfully.
"Why don't you call her?"
"I'll do it, thanks..." Casey walked into his office and called Dawson, however she didn't pick up any of his calls... he wished he could hear her voice.
/
Shay parked the ambulance and waited for Chout to leave her alone to call Dawson. "Hey, girl. How are you?
"I'm tired. I threw up three times since you left this morning, I'm always sleepy...," she said yawning.
"I know... Hmmm, Casey asked about you. Maybe I was a little harsh on him," Shay uttered.
"He called me a few times but I didn't pick up... I miss him and Anna..., but it was his decision, so..."
"Yeah... men... I'll never understand them...," Shay felt bad for Gabby.
"I feel empty without them... and now I'm having Casey's baby... Can you imagine? My life is a mess right now..."
"I think the baby is a good sign, it's not the end of you two...," Shay cheered her up.
"Shay. I don't want him to be with me because of the baby. We don't need being together for this baby to be loved, you know...," she wiped her tears.
"You're right. How about we have breakfast together tomorrow?"
"I would like that. Can you bring me some donuts and cupcakes too?" Gabby asked.
"Everything you want. See you tomorrow. Sleep well." Shay ended the call as Casey came into the bunker room.
"You were talking to Gabby?" he asked.
"Yeah, she's feeling better, believe in me" she knew he was worried.
"I believe you, Shay," he said upset.
/ /
"Where are you, Casey?" Severide questioned him on the phone.
"I can't say," he said sitting in his car.
"Why not?" Severide asked. "Oh, I know..."
"I... I'm acting like an idiot, I know...," Casey confessed.
"You can change that. Get out of your car, knock on her door and tell her that you love her, simple as that."
"If she doesn't want me back, after what I have done she doesn't love me anymore..." he felt so disappointed with himself.
"There is a chance, but you will only know if you open your heart and let her do the same... Tell me how long you have been in front of her building?"
"One, two hours, you know since we broke up I pass by and stay here for a couple of minutes just looking..."
"Casey, get out of the car, come on, don't waste time... go get your girl, everything depends on you..."
Casey laughed, "It's you, Severide? I never thought you would be the one giving me relationship advice."
"You underestimate me, buddy," they laughed. "I'll hang up, think about what I said."
"Alright, bye...".
/
Gabby was on her bed, drinking tea while scouring the internet for baby's nursery ideas... Anyone might say it's too early, but she couldn't help herself, she was happy, she is gonna be a mommy, a second miracle happened... She made a list of the pages she liked the most to check them later... After two hours of surfacing on the internet, she felt tired, it was time to sleep...
Carefully she made her way to the kitchen, turning off all the lights... When turning to go back to her room, she heard two knocks on the front door. Gabby waited a moment to make sure she had heard it correctly... A few seconds later two more knocks on the door. She walked to the door and opened it.
"Hi, Gabby...," Casey gave her a half-smile.
"Hi, Casey... what are you doing here?"
"I... can we talk," he was nervous, Gabby could sense it. " May I come in?"
"I was ready to sleep, Casey...," she said.
"I won't take long... I need one minute, please..."
"Fine… come in," he entered, Gabby closed the door. They stared at each other, he said nothing at first. Looking her over, Casey was glad she looked better than the last time he had seen her.
"Casey... you are gonna say something or-", he cut her off.
"Sorry, you got sick and I wanted to know how you were..."
"I'm good... I went to the doctor, he gave me some medicines and I feel better now..."
"That's great... I am glad you are okay... you look good..."
"Thank you," she smiled sweetly at him.
That's when he made a decision...
"Casey ... what are you doing?" She asked when he got closer...
Leaning down he kissed her lips lightly... When he went for a second kiss, she didn't stop him, Gabby kissed him back...
Casey wrapped his arms around her, as Gabby cupped his face with her hands... They kissed for a couple of minutes...
"I want you to stay... don't go to Florida. Stay with me...," he begged between kisses. "I love you-", Gabby cut in, she pulled away from him...
"You should go, Casey," she spoke breathlessly.
"I love you, Gabby..."
"You know you hurt me..." she said with tears in her eyes.
"I'm so sorry, Gabby. I'm sorry..."
"I'm going to Florida. I need this time to think about what just happened... Matt, you made me believe that my place was not here with you and Anna... I need time..."
"I was a jerk before... I pushed you away..." she cradled his face between her hands.
"When I come back, I'll call you... I can't promise you anything, just that I'll think about what you said..." he kissed her again and more intensely this time... in seconds Gabby's hands were under his shirt as he pressed her up against the wall...
"You... have... have to leave..."
"Sorry... I got carried away...," he panted.
"Okay... Me too... you should go home...," she ran her hands through her hair.
"Okay... I go..."
Gabby observed him... opening the door before looking at her one more time...
"I'll be here waiting for you if you want me back," those were his last words.
