The sound of raindrops battering against the window wakes Lena from her restful sleep, and the confusion it brings keeps her awake. Her penthouse has been soundproofed well enough that a simple downpour shouldn't wake her.
She forces her eyes open, tired and cosy in her cocoon in the sheets. She almost jumps out of her skin when she doesn't immediately recognise her surroundings, the only thing running through her brain is: 'this is not my bedroom'.
The familiarity of the dresser she's staring at puts her at ease quickly though, she does know this place. It takes a few seconds for her to connect the dots but when she does her heartrate lowers, recognising that she's in a safe place.
With her muscles relaxing once more, she allows herself to close her eyes again so she can bask in the early morning sun shining despite the rain and snuggle back into the warmth of the body behind her…wait. There's someone behind her.
Lena can't stop her eyes from growing wide, the panic returning. She tries to sit up but can't because there is two strong arms wrapped around her waist and then a soft hum to the back of her neck.
"Don't go." A mumbled voice calls out and the arms tighten minutely.
She knows that voice and now, amidst everything running through her head, she finally notices the picture frame sat upon the dresser she was looking at earlier. In the picture there is two women she knows, Alex and Kara Danvers.
She peers back over her shoulder, checking that she is in fact, in bed with the right Danvers sister. As much as she loves Alex, she would have to kick both her as and her own ass if Alex has strayed out of her marriage to Kelly.
The blonde hair mixing in with her own dark locks tells her that's not anything she as to worry about, there will be no punching herself today, thank god.
Her heartrate is picking up for a different reason now. She's in bed with her best friend and by the feeling of the sheets on her skin, she's not wearing any clothes. Well, that and the fact that Kara's boobs are pressed to her back, and she can feel her nipples pressing into her skin, hard from the cool air of the apartment.
"Good morning." Lena murmurs, bringing her hands down to join Kara's around her waist.
"Morning. Don't go." Is Kara's response despite the fact that Lena is actively pressing herself into Kara and pulling the sheets up around them more firmly to fight off the cold air.
Lena actually chuckles to herself at Kara's whiny tone. "How could I leave when you're being all cute and needy?"
Kara gives her a particularly hard squeeze at that. "Don't be mean or I won't make breakfast."
"We both know you'll make breakfast anyway, I can already sense that you're ready for some pancakes right this second."
"Are you a witch or something? How can you sense when I'm hungry?" Kara sounds genuinely confused, her tired voice slightly raspy which Lena is finding hot as hell.
"Darling, have you forgotten that I am an actual witch and I've known you for half a decade, so I know you eat as soon as you wake up?"
Kara hums a little and rolls away onto her back, letting Lena go. Both shiver at the loss of heat so Lena rolls over to reclaim the warmth. "Oh yeah, I forgot."
Lena snorts, landing on top of Kara. "How do you forget your best friend is a witch?"
"I don't know, it's just early I guess, but is that what we are now?"
"What witches? That's just me. Did you forget that you're an alien? I know you're tired but you're acting strange."
Kara let's out a shaky breath before speaking again. "I mean, are we still best friends after what we did last night?"
Lena takes in the nervous tone Kara is using and tries to make hers sound more confident, not wanting Kara to go into one of her nervous rambles this early in the morning. "If that's what you want, Kara. However if you would like to explore what we did last night a bit more, I would also be open to that."
She doesn't get a response right away and can't bring herself to look up at Kara's face, in fear that her false confidence was for naught, that she just humiliated herself and Kara's just trying to find a nice way to reject her.
Her ears are filled with the sound of the rain beating down on the windows, a physical manifestation of her feelings if there ever was one.
They should never have slept together last night, should never have crossed that line and rocked the boat that is their relationship. The line between platonic and romantic has always been blurred for them but it doesn't take a genius to know that sex isn't a platonic act for them.
"When you say 'explore' what do you mean by that?"
"That's something we'd have to come up with together, this is a decision we'd have to make together. What I do know is that I am not willing to make this a friends with benefits situation so if that's what you want, I'm sorry but I can't do it."
She is jolted by how fast Kara's head is shaking, spurring her to look up at her. "No, no. I don't want that either. I was hoping – well, I was thinking that maybe we could look at maybe a…development in our relationship."
A smile slowly spreads across Lena's face, her highest of hopes coming true and ringing in her ears like a perfect symphony. "I would love to develop our relationship."
They stare into each other's eyes, watching the way they are gleaming and their shy smiles, just inches apart. "Maybe we could talk it out over breakfast?"
"Now that sounds like a great idea."
