Gabby yawned, waking up as it was bright in the little house on Puerto Rico. Matt was still snoring beside her. Sitting up, she kissed him on top of his head as she slid out of the bed. Yawning as she walked to the bathroom, it was strange being here.
For a second it reminded her of the first night he had stayed over after coming to Puerto Rico. It had been unplanned, but that night, that week of falling in love with him again was now one of her happiest memories.
Now it just felt special that they were here together. It wasn't something that she hadn't expected after what had happened to him.
Stumbling towards the kitchen, she started to put on some coffee, well rested after the long night. They had not stuck it out long yesterday night, the mosquitoes quickly coming out. Instead they had laid on the bed, talking and cuddling.
Coming back here after all this time, she knew it would be hard leaving this place. But being somewhere with Matt meant it was home.
Walking back towards the bed, Matt was awake and yawning now as well.
''Good morning,''
''Good morning,'' he smiled at her as he stretched out, taking a few seconds to realize they were back on Puerto Rico.
''I am making some coffee, you need anything,''
He shook his head, sitting up.
''You okay?'' she asked concerned as he groaned loudly.
''Just a little sore from the flight,'' he assured her, gladly taking the mug as he sat up. They had slept in, both of them tired after the long day of traveling yesterday. She sat down beside him, also up against the headboard.
''Can make some pancakes if you want,''
''hmmm – I don't want you to move,'' he said as he put the mug aside, the coffee still hot and laid against her.
''You slept well,'' she remarked, Matt sleeping a lot longer than he usually did. Even when she wanted to sleep in after a long shift, he would always be up early.
''Being here, away from Chicago – it makes me feel relaxed. Like a real holiday,'' he admitted as he closed his eyes, his head still against her chest.
''Holiday Matt hmm, I like him, think I can take him on a holiday more often?'' she teased him as she kissed him on his head.
''I think captain Matt and holiday Matt can discuss that,'' he joked along as she caressed over his head.
''You sure, you don't need anything?''
He shook his head as he sat up and took a few sips of coffee.
''Just you and me, right here,'' he smiled as he laid his arm around her, his head against hers as they closed their eyes, intertwined in the sheets and each other.
The following day, after Gabby picked up her belongings at the hospital where she has send over her resignation not long after Matt's accident, they made their way to one of the beaches. Not daring to go out onto the sand with his sore leg and unstable walk, they made their way to one of the bars, sitting down by one of the tables closest to the water.
It was nice to see how much he enjoyed this holiday. Before, he had never wanted to go to as he deemed work important. Besides that, he had never been adventurous. But since the accident, that seemed to have changed. She could see how much he enjoyed being here compared to how worried he had been the first time he was here to make things up between themselves.
Ordering some drinks, they looked out over the water. She laughed as he hung back in his seat, basking in the sun.
''It's nice to see you enjoy yourself so much,''
''Look, I am not saying it beats the pier in Chicago on a sunny day,'' he teased her, but she was right, he was really enjoying his time here and spending time with her without any of the worried Chicago and his work held on his mind.
''It is really nice here Gabby, you and being here – recovering – it really does make me feel like a lucky man,''
''And the beer helps,''
''The beer sure helps,'' he laughed.
''You sure enjoyed that beer, let me get another one,'' she laughed as she had finished her own drink as well. Walking to the bar, she ordered another round, not having expected to be here with him after going here for the first time.
Walking back from the bar, she noticed that he had taken his shirt off.
Over his swim trunks, she noticed the scars from the various surgeries, the scars making its way towards his navel. It wasn't strange to her after these last few weeks, but it was good to see that he didn't mind. Ads he looked at her, she smiled, so proud of him.
''I don't mind them, as long as you don't,'' he said, a little worried that she wouldn't want people looking at them.
''Ofcourse not, you are perfect just the way you are,'' she told him, sitting down by the table again, laying her hand on his.
''I don't care about them, it's from work – and I wouldn't have done it any differently,'' he said as he looked down.
''Matt Casey, if you ever put me through that again –'' she told him, warning him.
''It was for a good cause,'' he pointed out.
''Saving a baby,'' she agreed with a smile.
''Yeah, now we just need some luck one of our own,'' he smiled at her.
Smiling, they looked over the ocean. They knew that when they left here, they would truly start building what felt like their second chance together.
As they got back from the beach, Gabby settled outside in the last evening sun with the novel she was reading as Matt went to go take a shower. As she finished another chapter, she suddenly heard a loud crash in the bathroom.
Worried, she walked back inside. Walking to the small attached bathroom, she found him sitting on the ground in the shower, looking miserable.
''What happened?''
''I fell,'' he admitted, not being able to get up.
''Matt!''
''It's fine,'' he told her, however, as he tried to get up, he cried out and fell down again.
''Don't move,'' she panicked as she switched off the shower, kneeling down by him.
''I am going to lift you up, alright –''
Stubborn, he pushed himself up, almost falling over. She grabbed him just in time, helping to bed. Dry heaving as immense pain was washing over him and caused pain, she inspected his side and hip, worried at how red it was becoming. Only now she noticed how hot he was and how dry his lips seemed. Realizing the hot climate had been too much on him, she got even more concerned.
''It's just sore-'' he wanted to brush it off.
''Matt, you drink enough water,''
''Yeah, I think –'' he mumbled dazed.
''You are burning up.''
''I will be fine after sleeping tonight,'' he said, the last thing he wanted was to go to the hospital again.
''Matt, you know there could be internal damage,''
Feeling nauseous after even making it to the bed, she threw some clothes towards him as she mumbled something about grabbing the car keys, he struggled putting on the swim trunks and the sweater.
He however also was aware that fighting his wife about going to the hospital was a battle he was going to lose. Making his way to the car with her help, he laid on the backseat, his lower body throbbing so bad he couldn't even make out where the pain was focused.
Driving to the hospital where she had worked before, Matt groaned softly.
''We are nearly there,'' she tried to comfort him.
''It's fine Gabby, really-'' he panted, but she could hear he was lying. Rushing towards the hospital, she parked the car close by the entry of the ER. Running around the car, she put his arm around her, helping him out of the car.
He almost fell again and as he was a lot heavier, she almost fell along with him. Propping him up again, she managed to yell for the girl walking by.
The ER was small, just like the hospital itself but knowing the staff soon proved helpful as she was soon recognized and somebody came to her aid immediately. A stretcher was brought over, Matt struggling to keep focused as pain washed over him now.
Dazed as the pain from the short walk Matt laid down on the stretcher. Over him, he just registered Gabby talking rapidly in Spanish as he was turned on his back.
Panting and dazed as they examined him, he could just about make out he had to wait for a CT scan as Gabby was talking rapidly in Spanish to the staff around her.
Looking at Gabby, he looked as she broke now that she was done talking and the staff left them alone.
''Hey, hey, it's going to be okay,'' he told her as she burst out in tears. Grabbing her hand, he didn't even mind his own pain anymore. Seeing Gabby in tears again, he hated to worry her once more after all she had already been through for him. Caressing over her back, she turned around at him.
''Sorry – I''
''Don't be sorry,'' he muttered, just concerned about her in this moment.
Soon, they hooked him up to an IV for painkillers and fluids, clearly doing him a world of good. As they waited for the scan, Matt was more worried about Gabby than about himself. So many times he had told her that it would be fine and now they were here once again.
Holding his hand, she caressed his arm with her other hand.
''Gonna be alright,'' she told him, finally calming down after the breakdown she had just had, freaking out being with Matt at the hospital again.
''I know,'' he said with a short smile, feeling sorry that he had to put her through this again.
''I am not worried about me,'' he assured her as he laid his arm on her back, ''I am worried about you.''
''Matt-''
''I am sorry Gabby, I know how much you worry about me,''
''You didn't do it on purpose obviously, so don't dare to apologize,'' she told him, kissing him on his cheek.
Luckily it didn't take long before he was taken for a CT scan.
As he was taken away for the scan, she walked outside, sighing in relief as everything seemed to be okay so far. She just hoped that he would be okay, especially after the long road they had already had. Parking the car nearby but in a designated spot, she decided to stay outside for a while because Matt would be gone for a while.
Sitting down on the curb by the ER, she let out of a light sigh of relief.
Although she knew this might be bad news, considering his earlier injuries, she was hopeful that he would, once again, be okay. At least the staff was hopeful that he wasn't bleeding internally and the hardware wasn't damaged.
It seemed like a major blow after the happy day at the beach.
It wasn't how she had envisioned today after the day on the beach. But after what had happened she did believe that no matter what, he would be okay.
Her arms were on her knees, which were shaking as she stared out onto the street, not wanting to think about what this could mean, as much as she tried to stay positive. A few tears rolled down her cheeks, but knowing how strong Matt was being she wanted tot do the same. Sighing deep, she got ready to go back inside.
Only now, a faint cry registered itself in her mind. Confused, Gabby got up from the curb and walked towards the small bushes nearby, almost in a trance like state. In the dark, it took her a moment to realize what she really a heard.
A baby's cry.
Kneeling down by the bushes, she noticed the books next to them.
In a carton box was a baby, only swaddled in a sheet. The baby was crying loudly, probably barely a few days old. Tears in her eyes as she folded her hands around the baby, her heart almost skipped a beat.
Gently, she lifted the crying baby from the box, looking around confused, not sure how long the baby had been here.
Carefully taking the baby in her arms, she hurried back inside.
Soooooo don't hate me for this chapter please, it has been planned since the beginning and I really hope you like where this is going. Thank you so much for reading and hopefully till next chapter!
