In the hospital, Matt got off the bed, carefully stepping down on both feet as he looked at the doctor.

''Everything is looking good Matt,'' he was assured.

''Walking has been a lot easier,'' he said, not wanting to have more people worried about him.

''Don't overdo it,''

''Never,'' Matt said he sat down and lifted his leg on the leg rest. Although it was a lot easier to walk since the surgery, walking too far took its toll.

''Want to go see her?'' Gabby asked as they made their outside of the doctors office.

''Yeah,'' Matt nodded, having grown just as attached to the little girl as Gabby had.

Almost like a routine, Gabby pushed the wheelchair to the children's unit after. It was eight days since Matt's surgery and her finding the baby girl and off the four days since they had been back from the hospital, they had spend three with the girl.

Matt had had to go almost every day, for checkups and physical therapy and things were going a lot better.

Daniela greeted them as they arrived at the ward where she had been staying.

''Not seeing any more of the island today?''

''Gotta be here anyway,'' Matt smiled at her, leaving Gabby be for a second.

''Oh, everything alright?''

''Just went for a checkup, it's all looking good,'' Matt smiled at Daniela, so grateful how caring Gabby's friend towards them.

Gabby didn't listen, her whole attention diverted to the baby babbling in the crib. Leaning on the edge, she smiled. The little girl was looking a whole lot better than when she had brought her in. She showed a big, toothless grin as she saw Gabby.

''She has been fidgety all day, I think she was waiting for you,'' Daniela smiled leaning against the doorpost. It was wonderful to see how much the couple cared for the baby, knowing how much she had lost from what Gabby had told and how this girl was no longer alone.

Matt smiled at Daniela, knew how much it meant to Gabby. As Gabby's friend left them alone, she took the baby in her arms, smiling as she held her.

''hey Guapa,'' she smiled the baby, the girl flaying in her arms as she babbled.

Matt moved a little closer with the wheelchair, smiling as he looked at her. Tears filled his eyes as he looked at Gabby holding the little girl. Seeing her as the mom that he had known she had always wanted to be, moved him.

''What's wrong-''

''Just seeing you with that beautiful girl,'' he said, chocking up for a bit. She laid her hand over his hand, her fingers intertwined with his as she held the girl on her other arm.

''You want to hold her?''

Although Matt had been with her on all these visits, he was clearly not comfortable with holding her. Although she didn't want to push him, she knew that deep down, he did want to hold her.

Still afraid he was going to get attached to another child they weren't going to be able to see grow up, he was hesitant of taking her, but let the girl in his arms then.

Her tiny hand on his shirt, pulling slightly on it as she was dozing off in his arms and looking at Gabby beside him, he felt the same love that she was so clearly feeling. She leaned against him as they looked at the baby girl.

Looking at his wife and the girl in his arms, he was still hesitant to feel good about what was happening, but he couldn't help himself.

Waking up in the middle of the night, Gabby was panting and sweating. Upset about the nightmare she had just had she was dazed for a second before she realized she was in Puerto Rico and not in Chicago. It wasn't even on her mind, only the nightmare she had just had.

Rolling over, Matt was fast asleep beside her.

Her stomach balled up as she thought of the nightmare she had just had. Thinking of the nightmare she had had of Matt not making through the accident, she moved closer to him. Pressing up as close to him as she could, she pressed her face into his back, sobbing as she thought of the nightmare she had had.

She felt him moved, rolling around as he wrapped her in his arms.

''What's wrong,'' he said, clearly sleepy but just concerned about her.

''Just had a nightmare,''

''Anything I can do,'' he said concerned, groaning as he propped up on one elbow and kissed her on her forehead.

''Seeing you what that baby made me realize how close I was to losing you – just – had a nightmare about the accident,''

He nodded understanding, kissing her on her forehead.

''I know it was scary, but I am not going anywhere.''

Laying close together, he held her close, never wanting to let her go again.

It was the third day in a row they had come to see the little girl. Gabby knew it was selfish, but each time she heard no family had shown up for the little girl it gave her hope. It felt unfair, knowing that this girl might have a family out there.

Walking back into the ward where the girl was staying, she smiled as Matt had her in his arms, looking out of the window and talking softly to her.

''I could get used to this view,'' she smiled as she walked up behind him, wrapping her arms around him, kissing him in his neck as she looked at the baby girl asleep in his arms.

''I was just telling her about Chicago… singing not a lullaby.''

''Clearly you weren't singing, she's still asleep,''

He chuckled softly, keeping his voice down as not to wake her.

Gabby moved one of the chairs closer, smiling as she looked between the girl and Matt. Laying her hand on his knee, she moved a little closer, sitting against him as they both looked at the girl sleeping in his arms.

''Daniela said CPS will come soon to take her to home, maybe she will end up in foster care or she will be adopted,'' Gabby said softly, still not wanting to wake her.

''Adoption…Gabby,'' Matt didn't to finish his sentence.

''Do you wanna go for it?''

''Yeah,'' he said without even the simplest doubt.

''Me too,'' she smiled as he looking down at the little girl in his arms.

Sitting in the coffee bar Gabby had used to video call him before, they pushed against each other as they tried to get into the frame of the video call.

For a second the screen remained black as they heard the chaplain ask for help, some grumbling from a teen and soon they did see the chaplain on the screen.

''Not really used to this video calling, luckily I have some people to help me out,'' Orlovsky smiled as he waved. They saw some of the other churchgoers behind him.

''Thank you so much for making the time,'' Gabby smiled.

The chaplain waved it off, so happy to see the couple, as the last time had been when he had been called to the hospital as they had waited for news on Matt.

''how are you both doing?''

''Not any worse for wear,'' Matt joked, immediately followed by a nudge from Gabby.

''We are good – we were just hoping that you could maybe help us,''

Explaining about the little girl and wanting to talk about the adoption and hoping that the chaplain could tell them about the right way to go about it, they gushed about the baby girl they had been visiting in the hospital nonstop. Even showing some pictures from their phones in excitement, they talked about their ambitions to adopt.

''I will talk to my contact with CPS here in Chicago and let them know about your situation, they might be able to give me some contacts for you for Puerto Rico,''

Matt nodded, gratefully. He knew that there was not much else that the chaplain could do them right at this moment. But it meant a lot that he would ask around for them. Since he had a lot to do with CPS in Chicago on calls where kids had been involved, he hoped that it was enough to at least give them a contact.

Waving their goodbyes, Matt wanted to feel hopeful about at least knowing where they could start the adoptions procedure.

On their way back from the coffee bar, they dropped by the big department store in San Juan. It felt almost strange, a place that they had never expected to be after losing their baby those years ago.

It wasn't a long search for something they liked, a soft bear immediately catching their eye. They picked up some clothes for her as well and soon they made their way home, excited to bring it to the hospital tomorrow.

At Gabby's house, they sat outside for dinner, Matt soon walking inside to get some more drinks. She listened carefully, but heard him make his way to the kitchen. She knew he would tell her not to worry and he felt a lot better after the surgery, but she did worry about him falling.

''All good?'' she asked concerned as he came walking outside with two bottle of beer.

''All good,'' he told her as he sat down, handing her one of the bottles.

''I don't know what to do, Matt,'' she admitted as they looked over the water.

''Anything I can do to help?''

''No, just not sure about what Orlovsky said.''

''I know, it has been weighing on my mind as well.'' He admitted. He knew that even a contact from Orlovsky was not just going to give them a clear path to adoption, but he was hopeful that it was the right place to start.

''You know, with my accident and the lasting injuries, the trouble we have had conceiving, when we lost – you know. I think is the way it was meant to be,'' he said as he laid his arms around her and pulled her against him, pressing his nose in her hair as he closed his eyes.

He hoped so much that this was the way it would happen as it almost felt like it was the right thing to happen after everything. As they weren't even sure if they would be able have a baby through surrogacy, this little girl almost seemed like a beacon in uncertainty.

The following day they went to see the baby girl in the hospital again.

Gently laying her down on the dressing pillow, Matt carefully unpacking the small set of clothes to dress her up in, sorting out the socks as well.

He smiled, looking as she carefully dressed the girl, almost like it was the easiest thing. Even more it felt that it was the thing that was supposed to happen.

The smile that had been on her face slid off though.

''What is wrong,''

''just – what if we manage to adopt her and we lose her, like Louie.''

''Gabby, I know I am a fool for promising this to you, but after all of these things we went through, I believe that things will go our way for once, I promise that we are not going to let his little girl down,'' he said softly, his voice breaking as tears filled his eyes. Thinking about the hardships that they had faced over the years, he hoped that things would finally go his way for once.

Tears welled up in her eyes ass well as they looked at the baby between them, they just hoped that their dreams for the future were not misplaced.
