Matt grabbed the bars on either side of him. It was another therapy session here in San Juan, but things were going a lot better daily. He hoped that they could finally fly home within a few weeks, also dependent on the adoption process they had started.

''Careful Matt, don't overdo it,'' the therapist that he had been assigned told him as he walked between the bars. Although he had been walking a lot more easily since the surgery, he still struggled with staying stable. He knew it was not just to blame on his leg but also his pelvis.

''Doing great Matt, how is the pain?''

''Barely any,'' he smiled. For the first time since his accident he was hopeful that he could make a full recovery. He knew if he wanted to get back on active duty he still had a long way to go, but he could see improvement.

Leaving physical therapy, he knew Gabby was already with the girl in the children's unit. They knew that soon she would be taken to a temporary shelter or foster family, since she couldn't stay in the hospital forever. As he packed up his stuff and got ready to make his way towards Gabby his phone rang. Grabbing his phone from his pocket as he stopped the wheelchair, he was surprised to see it was Mike, his therapist from Chicago.

''Hey Matt, just wanted to check how you are getting on on Puerto Rico and when you are coming back to Chicago.''

''Things are going well, just had another session here, walking is getting easier, still a little unstable but getting there,'' Matt said, thought it was so thoughtful of Mike to call him.

''That's really good to hear, so when can I expect you back?''

''No way to tell, I don't think I won't be cleared to fly because of health reasons – but we're in the midst of adopting a little girl that was surrendered to the hospital and we have been looking after since my fall,'' Matt admitted to Mike.

''That is amazing, Matt!'' Mike said excited and Matt was so happy to finally share it with some people. It was nice to finally have something else to talk about than his accident and his recovery.

Rounding off the conversation, he made his way to the children's unit. Although the little girl was no longer sick, they were glad that she was still here since they could visit her since Daniela allowed it. It was a lot easier than when she would be anywhere else.

''Hey,'' he said softly as he looked at the girl sleeping in Gabby's arms. Moving his wheelchair a little closer, he couldn't help but smile seeing them together. Although he was still worried they were getting hopeful when they didn't know for sure they could adopt her, he was hopeful.

His leg a bit tense, he stood up to walk it off.

''You wanna hold her for a bit?''

''Always, just wanna sit down first,'' Matt said a bit nervous since he still didn't stand very stably, and he worried about standing up with her in his arms and something happening.

''Don't want to drop her,'' he said a bit concerned as he took her from Gabby. For now he was just happy to hold her.

Although standing was getting easier, he was worried about not standing stable enough to hold her. Sitting down in his wheelchair, he held her close. He couldn't wait to hopefully adopt her and eventually being able to hold her a bit more easily.

''Things are getting better still, right,'' Gabby said concerned, not wanting him to get down.

''Still hope to be walking before we need to learn her how to walk,'' he smiled. They shared a kiss, things finally seeming to come together.

They sat nervously at the kitchen table Gabby's house. They still worried that they might lose the reception but they were so nervous they wanted to have this meeting in their own home.

Kelly started the call and behind him they immediately saw the nursery that here and some others from the firehouse had put together.

''It's beautiful, thank you so much,'' they smiled, so grateful for their friends in Chicago that had worked a whole day just to help them. Knowing what would he shown to CPS, they couldn't help but be even more hopeful things were going to work out for them.

Orlovsky and two officers from CPS soon joined the call and they looked along as Kelly showed them around. They tried not to laugh as Kelly put on a whole show for the tour, but were even more grateful that their friends were doing so well for them

''Thank you so much for doing this all for us Kelly,'' Matt thanked his friend, so grateful how their friends in Chicago were helping them out. They soon ended the video call.

Gabby looked worried, clearly bothered they couldn't show of their house themselves. She was really grateful that their friends had done this for him so they could proceed with the adoption process. Getting another look at the nursery, it was endearing how much work their friends had put into it. It was gorgeous what they had done, a small white crib against a beige wall. Matt couldn't stop smiling as he saw a little firehouse 51 onesie they had put on the edge of the crib.

After showing their house, they were called into the CPS office 3 days later. Gabby held Matt close as they walked inside. He knew that she was so nervous about this meeting. She held him equally close, finding comfort and hoping to give him some as well.

Luckily they didn't have to wait long before they were called into the office. Matt squeezed Gabby one more time.

''We have found her family and they officially surrendered her onto our car and the adoption agency,''

Gabby sighed with relief, knowing that this would not end like it had with Louie where they eventually would have to give her up again. It was hard to hear that they had surrendered the little girl formally, but she couldn't even imagine how hard it would have been for the family. As much as she had found a second home here, she did not know that a lot of people here on Puerto Rico were very poor.

Matt saw her get emotional and took her hand on her lap.

''She was born on the 14th of august, so she is 3 months old now. She was born named Gabriela, just like you,'' the lady smiled as she showed some papers to Gabby and Matt.

Gabby started to laugh, smiling as she thought it was even more of a sign that this girl had been meant to land inn their arms. ''Congratulations you both, you are our choice to adopt this girl,'' the CPS lady smiled at them as they listened in disbelief.

It took a few seconds before her words settled in and Gabby was still trying to process them as Matt fell into her arms, crying happy tears as he started to bawl. Relief washed over him, after all the problems they had had with starting a family. After all these years, it was finally coming together.

''Oh my god, oh my god,'' Gabby started to cry now as well as she folded her arms around Matt, neither of them being able to contain their tears.

They barely listened as the lady told them about a meeting with a notary tomorrow to officially sign off the adoption. They were told what to bring and they might wanted to think if they wanted to change her name.

As soon as they arrived in Chicago they would meet with adoption services as well since they couldn't do all the meetings now. But for now they were just so happy that there was enough belief in them that they could continue the adoption process still.

Tomorrow they would be going to the notary to start the official side of the adoption process so they could soon request a passport for her and they could fly back. They knew it might still be a few weeks before she would be allowed to fly to Chicago, but it didn't even matter to them. As long as they got to take her home it didn't matter to her.

From the CPS office, they went straight to the hospital to see little Gabriela again. Gabby had still not stopped smiling since she had found out that the little girl had the same name as her. Although they were sure about giving her a different first name to not make it any more confusing.

As soon as they walked in they held her, so grateful because they knew they wouldn't have to give her up, that they were really going to be her parents.

''I am really glad I fell in the shower,'' Matt said, still not over his emotions as his eyes filled with tears again.

''You test me every day you know,'' Gabby laughed, smiling at him with tears in her eyes.

''I am so happy,'' she just said, not being able to take her eyes of the little girl.

''We should probably name her before we go in there tomorrow,'' Gabby mumbled, not sure if Matt wanted to do that as well.

''I know,'' Matt smiled. Even though he had heard the words himself, he could still not believe that this girl was truly going to be their daughter. Even though he had been there when they had been told they could make it official, he still didn't even dare to believe it, still worried something would go wrong.

''Do you want her to take your last name?''

''Casey is a nice last name,'' she smiled. Although she still used her own name even after their wedding, she did like the idea of all three of them sharing the same last name if she would eventually take his last name as well.

''Are you sure?''

''Yeah, little miss Casey,'' Gabby smiled.

Before they could discuss her first name, there was a short knock on the door, Daniela, Gabby's friend peeked around the corner of the door.

''Hey you both, I just heard the news about the adoption, congratulations you both. She is going to have an amazing life with you,'' Daniela smiled, not wanting the bother the new parents for too long as she could imagine it was a very special moment for them.

''Thank you Daniela, that means a lot,'' Gabby smiled.

''It's nice, knowing Daniela helped us get her in our life – you like the name Daniela?'' Gabby suddenly asked as she realized how much she liked the name. She thought it would fit the little girl well and it was nice to have a name that still tied her to her roots.

''I like Daniela, as a name,'' Matt smiled.

''You think it suits her?''

''Yeah,''

''Me too,'' Gabby smiled.

''So Daniela Casey?''

''It has a nice ring to it,'' Gabby smiled, ''although I do think we should give her Gabriela as a middle name,''

Matt felt tears well in his eyes again as he nodded, a little embarrassed he couldn't seem to keep crying today. But seeing the little girl in Gabby's arms, knowing she was going to carry his last name meant the world to him.

''Daniela Gabriela Casey, you are going to have an amazing life and I can't wait to be with you every step of the way,'' Gabby promised her, Matt's arm around her shoulder. When she had gone to Puerto Rico, feeling despair as they were on the brink of divorce and sure they would never have a family, she had never even dared to dream that these months later, they were here together. Sitting together as a family, neither Gabby nor Matt could wait for the official moment she would be handed over to them and they could take her home.

Kissing Gabby on her cheek as he leaned against her, looking at the little girl, he was the happiest man on the planet, all of their hope and dreams finally coming true.
