Gabby woke up early in the morning. Reaching out her hand to touch Matt, she felt the cold on his side of the bed. Worried, she got up, only to calm down as soon as he walked into the hallway and saw the door to Daniela's room open. He sat in the comfy chair next to the crib. Daniela was in his arms, still fast asleep.
Leaning against the doorway, she smiled at the sight.
''Hey you,''
Looking up, Matt smiled at her.
''Didn't want to wake you up,'' he said softly, Daniela in his arms. Gabby sat down on the armrest of the chair, kissing Matt on top of his head.
Gabby would start working again tomorrow. Although eventually they would have to look for a daycare for her to stay, she was glad she and Matt could work out their shifts so that one of them was with Daniela at all times. The last thing they wanted was to leave her alone.
But today, they would finally visit the firehouse for the first time since they had come back from Puerto Rico. The last few days had spent settling everything in their house. Their last morning before they would need to get back in their normal rhythm had started off in bliss.
''How about you go take a shower, I make some breakfast and we visit the firehouse then,'' Gabby said as she knew neither of them would be able to sleep any longer. Beside that, she knew that would need to feed Daniela soon.
About an hour alter they did get ready to go to the firehouse. Matt was already seemingly so excited to show their daughter to their friends. They knew their shift would be on duty today so it would be nice to catch up with all of them.
Gently, she put the firehouse shirt on Daniela as well as the jacket they had bought for her the first day were back in Chicago. Although it was still fall, it was getting colder.
''Are you sure she is going to be warm enough?'' Matt asked concerned as Gabby put her in the stroller.
''It will bhe fine Matt – It's Chicago, not the arctic,'' she smiled, thinking it was adorable he was so concerned about their daughter. As they left the house, Matt took over the stroller.
''Gonne be okay to the firehouse?''
''It's not far, I will be fine,'' he assured her, especially walking with the stroller that gave him some extra support. Gabby laid her hand on his back as they started walking. It was a nice fall day and it was nice to be outside.
Although his pelvis and right hip did sometimes ache, it was an easy walk holding onto the baby stroller as it gave him some stability.
The firehouse was only a mile from the condo and it wasn't long before they arrived. It would be nice to finally have their friends meet their little girl.
At the firehouse, they were immediately met by squad, Kelly jumped up at first.
''How is my favorite person of all of Chicago?'' he cooed as he made his way towards the stroller, Matt and Gabby laughed.
''Don't let Stella hear that,'' Gabby joked. Kelly had been over, helping them out with some shopping and to see Daniela. It was sweet to see how much of a soft spot he had towards the little girl, given he had never shown any interest in kids before.
Making their way to the common room, everybody came over to meet Daniela. Gabby had her on her arm now, smiling proud as she held their daughter. Although she had not been here for a while, she was glad to be back here and for their second family to finally meet Daniela.
The girl they had been waiting for for so long.
The following day, Matt made his way towards the hospital for his physical therapy session with Mike. The first time since he was back in Chicago.
Getting in the uber, he walked into the hospital carrying the carrier. Daniela was still fast asleep and he was grateful she had been so good. Keeping an eye on her during the therapy session, he hoped that soon he would not have to take her, since he felt a little guilty about having to do so.
''She's gorgeous,'' Mike nodded over at her.
''Yeah, she is,'' Matt smiled, so proud to be her dad. As much as it had been a sudden change to his and Gabby's life, they had been adapted to it so easily. It came just naturally to them.
''So – do you still want to return to the firehouse now that – now that you got a little daughter?'' Mike asked as he took Matt's right foot and helped him stretch his leg. His hip hurt as Mike did so still. Even though it had been a few weeks, his hip still remained sore. He still hoped he would make a fully recovery though.
Groaning for a second, Matt was glad he had a reason not to answer. Looking as Mike put his leg down on the exercise Matt, he took a moment to collect his breath and collect his thoughts.
''I don't know to be honest,'' Matt finally said. It was something that had been on his mind. He did want to return to the job he did. But at the same time he had experienced now how dangerous it could be and he did worry about something happening to him now that they had Daniela in their lives.
''I don't know yet,'' Matt just mumbled. It seemed clear to Mike not to push it as they finished up the session.
At home, he put Daniela down for a nap as he checked some of the stuff to catch up on before he would be going to arson tomorrow. Reading through the files, he started to make dinner after. Although Gabby had offered to do it, he figured that she would be tired as it was her first shift back.
He figured that the last thing he could do was make dinner. As he couldn't drive himself though, he arranged with Kelly to bring the groceries over.
Kelly chatted with Matt, Daniela on his arm as he talked to Matt.
''Something wrong?''
''No, not really,'' Matt lied, not wanting to talk about what Mike had brought up and how he didn't have an answer.
''Alright, enjoy dinner,'' Kelly said after chatting for a few minutes. He handed Daniela back to Matt, not sure what was going on with his friend. Looking as Kelly left, he soon started dinner.
What Mike had said was still going through his head though.
He had just finished dinner as Gabby came walking in from her shift.
''Hey you,''
''Hey, smells good,'' Gabby smiled. She looked tired, but realizing Matt was making them dinner, all seemed right in the world. For a second, she couldn't even believe that she once willingly left his side.
''I figured you would be tired,'' He said as he kissed her on her forehead. Hugging him, she put her bag away and sat down by the table after taking Daniela from the playpen. Tired, but so grateful to have him as she looked at all the food in the kitchen, she was so grateful for the family she had.
Looking as Matt was finishing up plating the food, she couldn't be more happy that he had come Puerto Rico to fix things between them and they had finally.
''What is the cheese you used?'' She enquired as he came walking towards the table with to plates.
''It's – I don't know, Kelly helped me get all the stuff from the shop,'' Matt admitted.
Gabby laughed as she looked at the food, so appreciative of him. She couldn't help but smile as he put the plates of pasta down.
Digging in, she saw he wasn't eating much,''
''Something on your mind?''
''Mike asked me today if I would come back to the fire department now that I am a dad,'' Matt said as he moved his food around the plate.
''What do you want?''
''I want to return, but I am not sure how you feel about that now that we are parents,''
''Matt, what happened was an accident. I get your worries, but I don't want you think I will stop you from going back to active duty. When you are fully recovered, you should go back to the firehouse if you want to,''
He nodded, glad to have finally talked about it. He still wasn't sure, but he was glad to know that Gabby would support him. Holding hands on the table, she leaned over to kiss him.
She knew that no matter what, they would be alright.
