Gabby waited in the kitchen for Matt to return. Daniela was in her high chair, having just had some fruit. Nervous, she looked out of the kitchen window but didn't see him in the street.

Relieved as the backdoor opened, she looked as he walked inside. It was such a welcome sight to see him in his running clothes, as he had gone for a run most of the days he didn't have to work.

'Hey, glad you are back,' she smiled as she had been nervous about him going for a run on his own, but after kissing her and kissing Daniela on her head, he smiled at her.

'It was fine, really,' he assured her, although he sat down to rest. His leg was throbbing, but he was glad to have gone on a run again.

'No pain?'

'None,' Matt assured her as he grabbed one of the apples from the fruit bowl on the table.

'That's good, just gotta wait for the hardware to be removed and I am sure there will be no problems going back to the force,' Gabby smiled as she wiped some of the fruity mush away from Daniela's face.

'Are you nervous about today?' she asked as she sat down as well, not sure how Matt was feeling about seeing her family today after their near divorce.

'Excited to see them,' he told her with a smile. It was just her mum, Laura, Diego and Eva and her boyfriend would join them as well, although they were still on the way from their college town.

'You must be too, they finally get to meet Daniela,'

'Yeah,' she nodded with a smile.

'I better go cleanup before are running late – probably should get Daniela sorted too,' Matt said as he got up to take a shower, looking as Daniela was moving the mushed fruit from her hands into her hair.

'Can take her into the shower with me,'

'Nothing a few wipes can't fix, I still had to change her anyway, come on, let's get ready,' Gabby smiled.

Half an hour later, they were in the car. Gabby drove, Matt still not cleared for driving. But with how well his run went this morning, he hoped that soon he would be cleared for driving again as well.

Daniela was babbling in the back of the car, holding her stuffed bear they had bought for her in Puerto Rico. They were glad she was settling in so well, the babbling was something that she had started to do recently.

Arriving at the restaurant where they would get together, Gabby started to feel a little nervous seeing her family again. She had not seen most of them since they had returned from Puerto Rico with Daniela, mostly been busy with Matt's recovery and settling back in. Only her mum had been by a few times.

Parking by the restaurant and taking Daniela out of the car, they walked inside. Camilla, Diego and Laura were already there.

Matt wasn't sure how much people knew about how he and Gabby had nearly divorced and he worried about what people would think. Especially since he had not seen most of them in a long time.

'There she is!' Camilla said excited when she saw Daniela on Gabby's arm.

'Most important guest huh,' Gabby smiled, Camilla kissing Daniela on her forehead.

Settling by the table, Matt was happy to sit down. Even though the run had gone well his leg was tired now. He couldn't help but smile though as he saw Gabby sit with Daniela on her lap, her family swarming around as it was the first time Laura and Diego saw her.

They had been back in Chicago for seven weeks now, but were glad people let them settle in as a family before swarming them with everything. But he knew it meant a lot to her.

'How are you doing Matt?'

'On top of the world with her with us now,' he smiled at Laura as she sat down beside him. She was glad that even with all the drama surrounding Antonio, she was still a fixture in the family. With Antonio having left, Camila was still really close with Laura and it was nice for the kids as well.

'She is gorgeous, I am so happy for you and Gabby,' Laura smiled. She finally got to hold her niece as well, smiling as Daniela was on her lap.

'Yeah, she is,'

'So how are you? Are you going back to work soon?'

'Already working at Arson, but still waiting to get back on the force,'

Laura nodded, looking down at the girl on her lap.

'Can imagine you don't want to go back with this little girl waiting at home,' Laura said.

'Still wanna go back, all healed up, well mostly. Hoping to return to the force within a the next three months,' Matt smiled.

They looked up as Eva came walking in with her boyfriend. They had gone off to college together but it was nice they still came to join them now.

As soon as Eva saw her little cousin though, there was no more attention for her boyfriend as she immediately started gushing over the little girl on Laura's lap. All the attention soon became too much on Daniela and Gabby took her away to walk with her for a second as that usually calmed her down.

Eva made the round around the table introducing everyone to her boyfriend now.

'That's Matt, my uncle,' Eva said as they joined the table. It was nice to hear that there was nothing to be said about it and he was glad to hear that none of her family thought any different of him after what had happened with Gabby after she had left to Puerto Rico. He was glad that now that they were bag together, nothing had changed for her family.

Daniela had fallen asleep on Gabby's lap and Camilla couldn't help but smile looking at her daughter and her granddaughter.

'She is gorgeous and you look so happy. She is so lucky to have you,'

'We are lucky to have her,' Gabby smiled, holding her sleeping daughter close.

'Very blessed,' he said as he laid his arm around Gabby and kissed her against the side of her head.

In the car on the way back, he couldn't help but feel so happy to have spend the night with the family but as well with his own little family. Celebrating a birthday like this was something that he had never done with his own family when he had grown up. But having such a nice day with his wife and daughter, he couldn't help and feel like a very lucky man.

'Eva is so grown up, it was strange to see her with a boyfriend,' Gabby laughed.

'You know what I don't want to think about?'

'Hmm,' Gabby asked curious as they were nearly home.

'Daniela one day coming in to family functions with a boyfriend – or a girlfriend. Gosh, we only had her for two months now and I already worry about her growing up,'

Gabby started to laugh and it made him laugh as well.

'I know it is silly, but always knew that I would be a protective dad,'

'I think it is adorable, but it will be a while,' Gabby laughed, reaching out her hand to his and taking his hand.

'I just – we missed a part of her life already. I know she won't remember, I just wanna be a good dad,'

'You are,'

'And you are the most amazing mom, really. She is lucky to have you,'

Gabby smiled, tears welling up in her eyes as she looked at the road. It meant a lot that he said that, as she had been scared when the adoption went through that she had so much to learn. Hearing how well she was doing made her emotional.

At home, they put Daniela to bed and sat outside. It wasn't a cold night so as they had put her to bed, they sat around the fireplace in the patio. She remembered when Matt had just come home from the hospital and so insistent on doing it himself. Now she didn't worry about it at all as they settled outside. A glass of wine in her hand, she smiled as she looked at his face lit up by the flames.

'What you said in the car really moved me, I was so worried how things would go since you know – it happened out of nowhere,'

'Gabby, you are amazing, as a woman, as Daniela's woman and as my wife, I am a lucky guy,' he said as he laid his hand over hers.

Getting up from her own chair, she sat down on his lap, in his arms as they looked at the flames.

'I am a lucky woman as well, you taking me back-'

'That worked from both side and is water under the bridge,' he said as he held her close, kissing her.

Both looking up at the stairs and the moon, both of them thought of the short few weeks they had their long distance relationship and kept telling each other they loved each other to the moon and back.

Through the open patio door, they heard Daniela cry and Matt kissed Gabby on her head again, moving out from under her as he got up.

'Duty calls,' he smiled as he got up.

'Probably left you a present in her diaper,'

'Even shitty diapers make me feel like a lucky man. Back in a few minutes,' he said with a wink as he walked inside.

Holding her glass as she looked into the flames, feeling so blessed that she and Matt had been able to rebuild their relationship, with a beautiful daughter to boot.

Just for a second, she wished that she could tell Shay about all of it. As much as she had given it a space, she felt so happy now she wished she could share that with her best friend.

'Something wrong?' Matt asked as he came walking outside after a few minutes, seeing Gabby look up at the stars.

'Nothing – just thinking of Shay and what she would say about us, Daniela,'

'She would be really happy and proud for you, have to admit I have been thinking of Andy now that I am a dad,'

Gabby caressed his arm for a second as she saw the emotions in his face.

'If they are up there, pretty sure Andy was laughing because Daniela really left me one hell of a gift,' Matt said as he sat down, Gabby sitting on his lap and into his arms again.

'Just makes me realize again we gotta make the best of every day,'

'Don't need to try, as long as I have you,' he said as he had his arms around her and they looked up at the stars.

'That was really cheesy,'

'It is true though,' he said, holding her close, looking up at the stars.
