"Aside from the Dr. Anderson stuff, what was her relationship like with Tyrone?" Huey asked changing the topic.
He could sense that Ebony felt guilty for bringing Dr. Anderson back in the picture at that time, so he thought they could move on from him.
Huey didn't like Tyrone but he was curious to hear more about him and Jazmine.
They reminded me of a cute high school couple when it came to Jazmine and Tyrone. They were continually talking to each other, hanging around, doing adorable things, and being the type single people despise. I liked Jazmine with Tyrone because she seemed to be in desperate need of love. Tyrone was only there to put the pieces back together because she had already been through so much with Dr. Anderson and leaving Huey had broken her.
Even knowing she was pregnant with another man's child, I was shocked he chose to date Jazmine. That generally bothers most men, but he was ready to put up with it for her.
I was also curious if he had ever done anything sexual with Jazmine. When Jazmine knew she had AIDS, I didn't want him to get the incorrect notion and try to have sex with her. But, despite the fact that Tyrone was a really attractive guy, Jazmine would constantly assure me that nothing was going on between them.
Later, Jazmine informed me that Tyrone had contrary viewpoints about sex. He was the type to wait until marriage. So I didn't have to worry about him.
I remember Nicole and I decided to invite Tyrone over for dinner when he dropped Jazmine off from work.
The one thing I didn't like about the dinner was his shorts but I was able to bypass it.
We were having salad, alfredo, bread, wine, and juice for Jazmine. I didn't feel like going to Olive Garden and waiting in that long line to get reservations.
We were all seated at the table with food on our plates and we were eating.
It was quiet at first until Nicole decided to start up a conversation.
"So, Tyrone and Jazmine, how was work today?" Nicole asked the two.
"It was okay, I didn't get that many students to come to the nurse's office today. I think I only had three at most complaints about having a headache," Jazmine answered.
"Tyrone what about you?" Nicole asked.
"I let the kids play outside today and a few of the boys were debating with me about who's a better basketball player," Tyrone answered.
"You get into arguments with the kids?" Nicole asked trying to contain her smile.
"I would say a debate, but, yes! They keep saying Shaq O'Neal is a better baller than Michael Jordan just because he's taller than him," Tyrone exclaimed causing both Nicole and Jazmine to laugh.
"They're just kids! Wait till they see it for themselves," Jazmine said still smiling.
"Yeah, I didn't feed too much into it because they're kids and they don't know much yet," he said as I nodded.
"It wouldn't look good with a grown man arguing with 8 and 9-year-olds," he said.
"If you don't mind me asking Tyrone, how old are you?" I asked catching him by surprise.
"I'm 25-years-old," he answered as I gave him an odd look.
I looked over at Jazmine to see she looked guilty and took a sip of her juice.
A 19-year-old woman dating a 25-year-old man!
I don't exactly know how I should feel about that. Dr. Anderson was in his mid 30's when he was seeing Jazmine and she was 18 at the time. Tyrone is 25-years-old and he's dating Jazmine while she's 19.
I guess it's better than dating a guy who's over a decade older than you. Tyrone's only six years older than Jazmine, so I guess there's nothing wrong with that.
"Okay, do you do anything outside of school?" I asked him.
"I either visit the family, play basketball with some of my homeboys, go to church, hang with Jazz, or just chill out at home," he simply answered.
That's normal!
"Don't forget to play video games," Jazmine added.
"Oh and I sometimes like to play video games," he said.
"Yes, on one of our dates he took me to an arcade," Jazmine said.
"An arcade?" I questioned.
"You can't lie and say you didn't enjoy yourself," Tyrone smirked.
"I gotta tell you, this woman is aggressively competitive," he said laughing along with Nicole.
"I am not competitive," she argued.
"Says the woman who was beating kids in games that gave the most tickets so she could get that pink pony," Tyrone reminded.
"Jazmine, you were beating up kids?" I asked shocked at her actions.
"No, no, no she was just going against them in video games and winning," Tyrone corrected.
"Oh okay," I said relieved.
"I can't believe you would think I would put my hands on a little kid," Jazmine said crossing her hands.
"With your mood swings lately I wouldn't be surprised," I said taking a sip of my wine. Jazmine just rolled her eyes and ignored my comment.
"Yeah, but she was able to get the pony at the end of it all," he said causing us to laugh a little.
"It was an opportunity I couldn't pass up," she said smiling.
"Is there anything else you two do for fun?" Nicole asked.
"Let me think...we sometimes play basketball," he answered.
"Basketball?" I said putting down my glass of wine.
"Yes ma'am," Tyrone answered.
"What's the problem now Ebony?" Nicole sighed.
"Jazmine you shouldn't be doing anything extremely active while carrying your baby," I said.
"Ebony it's nothing major. It's more of a walk-through," she tried to assure me.
"Yeah we don't play hard, like she said it's either a walk-through or a light jog," Tyrone also tried to assure me.
I gave him an odd look and Nicole could sense what I was thinking.
"Ebony I think it's great that Jazmine is being a little active. That's also healthy for the baby and herself," Nicole assured.
I thought about it and it's better than her sitting around not doing anything. I just don't want her to pass out for being too active.
"Okay, as long as you're not overworking yourself I'm fine with it," I said giving in.
"Ok, we can work with that! I make sure that she's never overworking herself," Tyrone assured as I just smiled at him.
He was a good man!
"I liked Tyrone, there was nothing wrong with him. He didn't drink, smoke, have any baby mamas, criminal records, or fuck with every woman on the block," Ebony said offending Huey.
"No offense!" Ebony added.
"None taken!" Huey replied taking full offense to her comment.
"Was there anything else you liked about Tyrone?" Huelene asked Ebony.
"Yes, surprisingly, Tyrone made me very self-aware of things I didn't even know," Ebony stated.
"Like what?" Huey asked.
"Like Jazmine's pregnancy!" Ebony answered.
After we were finished with dinner, Tyrone decided to be nice and stay to help us clean up. Jazmine had gotten sleepy and he wanted her to get some rest so he decided to do her part of the chores and wash the dishes.
Nicole went to go check on Jazmine to make sure she didn't pass out.
It was just Tyrone and I left in the kitchen alone with each other. Since I was done cleaning up the table I decided to watch Tyrone wash dishes and try and make conversation with him.
"So, how did you enjoy the food?" I asked him.
"It was good! I need to start cooking more often instead of getting take out," he said as I smiled.
"Yeah, I need to do the same thing. The majority of that stuff on the menu I can make at home if I wasn't lazy," I agreed.
"I know the feeling," he sighed.
It was quiet between the two of us once again and I had to start another conversation.
"Tyrone?" I asked as he looked at me.
"Why did you decide to go out with Jazmine?" I asked him.
"I thought she was a nice, funny, and smart girl. She didn't do anything bad and she seemed like she kept her head high for the future. That's the type of woman you would want to bring home to mom," he answered.
"Yeah...but you still wanted to go out with her even though she is pregnant with another man's child?" I asked the award-winning question.
"Yes, I still wanted to go out with Jazmine. I don't think there's anything wrong with dating while you're pregnant," he answered. "Before I was born, my mom was pregnant with me, and she went out with a guy who I believed was my father," he added.
"Oh!" I said.
"Yeah and she seems like she needs love in her life," he added.
"She does, she's been through a lot," I agreed.
"With her last lover?" he asked.
"Something like that," I said.
"Yeah, how are her ultrasounds going?" he asked.
"Surprisingly, they're going good. She's healthy and the baby is healthy," I answered.
"Baby?" he questioned in disbelief.
"Yes the baby is healthy," I emphasized.
"Don't you mean babies," he said correcting me.
"No, I mean baby! What makes you think Jazmine is pregnant with more than one child?" I asked confused.
"Because her belly is too big to be at five months," he answered.
"Okay, but every woman's pregnancy is different, so she could just have a big belly with one baby inside," I argued getting quite offended by his answer.
"I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just saying when I was in school we had to learn about child development and how women look throughout the months when they're pregnant with one of multiple babies," he assured.
"And what does that have to do with Jazmine?" I asked. "The nurse had told us she was expecting one baby," I said giving him a little proof.
"Yes, but did the doctor also come in to justify that she was only having a baby?" he asked.
"No, I don't think so, it was only the nurse," I answered unsure at this point.
"Okay, was the nurse young or new at her job, or did she show any unsureness when she was checking Jazmine?" he asked.
I had to think back and look over at Nurse Jenkins actions. She was nervous the whole time when Jazmine was accusing her of being wrong of her data. Jazmine was a nurse before so she could tell when something was wrong. I don't think she fully checked Jazmine when she was moving the device around Jazmine's belly. Nurse Jenkins had to be new to all of this!
"Yes," I answered.
"Okay, that explains everything," he said.
"So you believe the nurses data isn't correct?" I asked a bit nervous.
What if she could have been wrong about Jazmine's health results?
"I just believe she got numbers wrong on how many babies Jazmine has," he simply answered.
"Okay, from your perspective, how many babies do you think Jazmine has?" I asked curiously.
"From what I've seen, I believe she has at least two babies in womb," he answered as I thought about it.
He could be right! Nicole, Jazmine, and I were shocked when she was five months at her size.
"Wait, so you mean to tell me that Jazmine could have been possibly pregnant with two babies?" Huey asked to make sure.
"I could have had a couple of brother's or sister's ," Huelene said, shocked at the spoken news.
"Possibly," Ebony said.
"What did the doctors or nurses say when she went back for another check up?" Huey asked.
Not long after when Tyrone told me Jazmine could possibly be pregnant with more babies, I immediately took her to the hospital when she got off of work.
She was in a different room from last time and I had requested if we could have a doctor check her instead of a nurse.
I didn't want to be rude but this was serious business. If Jazmine was carrying more than one baby this could be bad for her and the children because of her disease.
There might be a chance one or all of them might not survive the pregnancy.
"Ebony why are we here again? I thought I didn't have to come back until it was a couple of weeks," she asked confused.
I was walking back and forth, nervous.
"We're here because you might be pregnant with another child," I answered.
"Another child?" she said confused.
"Yes!" I exclaimed.
"But Nurse Jenkins implied I was pregnant with only one child," Jazmine said.
"Nurse Jenkins wasn't even sure of herself while she was checking your ultrasound, and I don't think even checked it good enough. She looked confused the whole time," I argued.
"Who put this idea in your head that I could be pregnant with more than one child?" Jazmine asked.
"Tyrone," I answered.
"What did he tell you?" she asked frowning.
"He told me it couldn't be possible that you were pregnant with one child due to the size of your belly," I said as she rolled her eyes.
"Ebony, pregnant women belly sizes are always different. I could be having one baby in this big belly," she tried to defend.
"Okay but what if it's more?" I asked.
"Then it's more, there's nothing I can do about it," she said.
The doctor had came in with a clipboard and Jazmine was looking at him closely to see his name tag.
"Hi Jazmine, I'm Dr. Charles, and I will be doing your ultrasound today," Dr. Charles said introducing himself.
"Nice to meet you Dr. Charles," she said smiling.
"I was told you guys didn't believe the other nurse when you came in for the first time," he said.
"We're sorry, it's just something doesn't seem like it's adding up," I apologized.
"You're fine! Nurse Jenkins is a student and she was probably unsure of herself. We hire part time nurses at high schools so we can help them grow to be better nurses when they officially enter the industry," he said as he was getting everything ready for Jazmine.
"You hire them while they're in high school and you let them do all the work?" I asked crossing my arms.
"No we don't let them do all the work. We try to give them space so they can learn on their own and not have us hold their hand the whole time," he assured as he started rubbing the cold gel on Jazmine.
"What if they get something wrong or if they're not sure of themselves?" I asked.
"They have to learn to make mistakes but if they need help they shouldn't be afraid to ask," he said.
"Okay, and you don't let them do deliveries do you?" I asked. I didn't want them high schoolers coming anywhere near Jazmine when she was delivering her child.
"Do you mean delivering babies?" he asked to be sure.
"Yes," I answered.
"Oh, we don't let them do that until they get their licenses," Dr. Charles assured.
"Oh, thank God!" I said relieved.
"Let's get you checked Ms. DuBois," Dr. Charles said rubbing her stomach with the monitor.
Jazmine, Dr. Charles, and I had looked at the screen to see if there was anything else on that ultrasound that was missed.
Dr. Charles was moving the monitor all around Jazmine stomach and I couldn't tell what I was looking at.
"Oh, now I see what the problem was," he said.
"Is something wrong with my health or the baby Dr. Charles?" Jazmine asked worriedly.
"No, Jazmine, there is nothing wrong with you or your babies health," he answered.
"Babies?" she questioned taken back from his statement.
"Yes, babies, you're having twins," Dr. Charles answered.
"Say what?" Jazmine said in disbelief.
"How could this be, I thought I was only having one baby," she exclaimed.
"Yes, how could this be missed?" I also asked.
"This is a common mistake! Sometimes the babies could just be hiding in there and we won't be able to see them until later when we check them again," Dr. Charles said.
"Oh wow!" I said in disbelief.
"But congratulations you're having twins," Dr. Charles spoke excitedly.
"Wait a minute, you mean to tell me that Jazmine was having twins?" Huey asked once again.
"Yes," Ebony answered.
"How come you never mentioned she was pregnant with twins?" Huey exclaimed.
"It's been so long it was put in the back of my mind," Ebony answered.
"Something like that should never be put in the back of your head," Huey scold.
"Well, I'm sorry, but the whole situation by itself was confusing and something wasn't adding up," Ebony said.
"So you mean to tell me I have another child out there?" Huey asked as Ebony looked a little uneasy.
"I don't know about that. Everything will make more sense when I get to the end. There was a lot of stuff going on at that time that's hard to explain," Ebony assured.
Thank you for reading!
