"Okay, if Jazmine had a safe pregnancy then what drama came along with it?" Huey asked.

"The drama was Dr. Anderson," Ebony answered.

"Dr. Anderson?" Huey questioned.

"I thought you said you only had seen him once," Huey reminded.

"Yes, but that was when I encountered him alone," Ebony said.

"Okay, but you said that he and Jazmine didn't have any encounterments," Huey said.

"What I meant was that I never knew if they talked alone. But after Jazmine gave birth he was immediately trying to get a DNA test on both of the twins," Ebony explained.

"A DNA test? I thought Huelene and the other twin were mines," Huey said in disbelief.

"Not exactly!" Ebony said uneasily.

We were met with new obstacles as soon as Jazmine returned from the hospital with her twins. Surprisingly, it had nothing to do with Jazmine's AIDS. It had something to do with her babies. We were hit with lawsuits by Dr. Anderson only three weeks after her babies were born.

This caught us off guard because we just had a month to prepare for the trial. When you are served with a lawsuit, it can take anywhere from a few months to a year to set a date, but we only had a month to prepare.

I recall the lawyer we hired had just left our house, and Jazmine was exhausted at the table. We were all working extremely hard to prepare for this case. We only had a short time to gather evidence of what we could get our hands on. And there was a lot to cope with on top of the job and the babies.

Taking care of a baby is difficult since they are always crying, going to the diaper, being hungry, keeping us awake at night, and so on. This was the worst possible time to be served with a lawsuit.

I walked over to Jazmine to sit down with her at the table. She had her head down and she didn't look back up.

"Jazmine are you okay?" I asked as she shook her head.

"I don't know why this is happening Ebony," she sighed.

"I don't know even know how he got his hands on the babies. When did he take a DNA test on both of the twins?" she rhetorically asked.

"I don't know Jaz," I said as she sighed once again.

"This is a nightmare!" she sadly spoke.

"Do you know the results?" I asked as she nodded.

"I couldn't believe it when I first had seen the papers," she said looking up. Her eyes were a bit pink and her color seemed to be gone.

"Are the twins both his?" I asked her as she shook her head.

"Are they Huey's?" I asked as she shook her head once again.

"It's hard to explain...I never thought it would be possible," she said shocked.

"Both the twins have different dads," she said rubbing her fingers on her forehead.

"Say what?" I asked as she sighed.

"The baby girl is Huey's and the baby boy is James," she simply answered.

"Is that even possible?" I asked shocked.

"I'm afraid so...it's rare, but it's possible!" she assured.

"Is he trying to get both of the twins?" I asked as she shook her head.

"He's trying to get custody of his son," she said.

"No, that's not fair! He shouldn't have custody of his child. He wasn't there for your pregnancy, he purposefully gave you AIDS, and he mentally abuses you," I argued.

"I know, but the court might favor him," Jazmine pointed out.

"What, why?" I asked.

"For starters; he's the father, he has a higher salary than all three of us combined, he has proof of my disease, he can pull up my history, and he has good lawyers," Jazmine exclaimed.

"What's that got to do with anything?" I asked.

"Ebony he knows how to work the system," Jazmine stated.

"Okay, but if the judge sees that we're providing a safe environment for the babies and that we're well caring parents, don't you think they'll be in favor of us?" I asked.

"No, they won't! There are already three strikes against us! One is AIDS, you and Nicole are gay, and I'm pretty sure you and I have a bad history," Jazmine explained.

"What kind of bad history?" I asked, confused.

"What I mean is that you've done stuff when you were young and I've done stuff," she said. She's not wrong, I have done stuff when I was young. I wasn't the best kid growing up.

I've been to jail, had abortions, therapy, and so on. I don't have a good record either.

"Jazmine, what have you done for them not to be in favor of you?" I asked. I knew Jazmine had got AIDS but I don't think she's done anything worse than that.

"He might try and pull up my job history," she said.

"What about your job history?" I asked.

"When I was a nurse and I found out I wasn't earning enough money at work I was trying to attempt to be a stripper and then I was trying to offer my sexual services to other people but I was arrested by a cop," she said as I looked at her funny.

"Jazmine you never told me you were arrested. Did you have sex with other guys?" I asked her.

"I wouldn't say I had sex...I simply jerked them off and said seductive things to them. A lot of them were cheap and I wasn't fin to sell myself for $50 just to fuck," she said as I tried my best to contain my giggle.

"So you told them you were only going to jerk them off?" I asked as she nodded.

"If you were arrested then how did Huey not know anything about this?" I asked confused.

"When they were allowing me to make one phone call, I called James instead of Huey because I didn't want Huey to know what I was doing," she explained.

"So James bailed you out?" I asked as she nodded.

"Then afterward, I didn't want to sell myself on the streets anymore because I didn't want to get arrested again. I was really desperate for money and James was offering a lot for me to have sex with him," she said.

"You only fucked James, no one else?" I asked to be sure.

"Yes, James was the only person I was having sex with behind Huey's back. Those are the only two men who I slept with," she said.

"Okay, well, let's hope the judge favors us and not Dr. Anderson," I said with hope in my tone.

"Oh wow, I can't believe all that was happening," Huey said in disbelief.

"Yes, all that was happening, literally after she gave birth," Ebony exclaimed.

"And you only had little time to prepare for your trial?" Huey asked.

"Yes! As I said before a lot was going on. They didn't even consider the circumstance of Jazmine's mental health," Ebony added.

"Wait, then when did you name me and my brother?" Huelene asked.

"Jazmine decided to name you and your brother when she was watching the two of you sleep," Ebony answered.

"So what did she name the boy?" Huey asked.

Jazmine was in the nursey watching the twins sleep. She couldn't believe her two beautiful babies had come out healthy. I was in the nursery because I was helping her put them to sleep.

She always adored watching them sleep because they looked so peaceful.

"What are you thinking about?" I asked her.

"Just some names," she said as I perked up.

"What are you going to name them?" I asked out of curiosity.

"I'm going to name the girl, Huelene Priscilla Freeman," she said smiling.

"You're naming her after Huey," I said in disbelief.

"Yes, even though he wasn't here every step of the way, and he's with another woman, I still know deep down that he loves me and I know he would have loved her. She reminds me so much of him. She's always scowling when she's sleeping, she's very silly when she wants to be, her curiosity is just like his, and she literally has his whole face. She might have my eyes and smile but she has his looks," Jazmine explained.

"Believe it or not, they were supposed to be due on his birthday," she said.

"When is his birthday?" I asked.

"March 20th" she answered.

"Oh, they were born two days early," I said a little taken back.

"Yeah!" she said nodding

"What are you going to name the boy?" I asked as she sighed.

"I haven't thought it through yet, but I wanted to name him Nicholas Ebony Anderson," she said sure of herself.

"I wanted to name him after you and Nicole since the two of you helped me so much through my pregnancy," she explained.

"Awww, Jazmine that is so sweet of you," I said heart warmed. I almost wanted to cry. She named the boy after Nicole and me. Even though the boy might get made fun of, I still think it's pretty sweet.

"Shh!" she said holding up her finger to her mouth. She didn't want me to wake up the babies.

"Sorry!" I apologized.

"Are you ready for the trial?" I asked her.

"Honestly, no, I just hope this can all be over. I'm up to here with my mental state," she said holding her hand up high.

"I know," I said rubbing her shoulder.

"Will you be scared if James has custody of Nicholas?" I asked as she started to think about it.

"I hate to say it, but, surprisingly, no! Even though James is a sadistic asshole and sometimes can be narcissistic, I know deep down he would step up to his responsibilities and take care of Nicholas," she sadly spoke.

"Regardless with all that's happened," she said.

"Do you know why he's trying to get Nicholas?" I asked.

"Yeah," she said nodding her head.

"Why?" I asked.

"It's because James has always wanted kids, but it was always hard for him to have kids because he had a lower production of sperms," she explained.

"Oh wow!" I said taken back.

"Yeah, and I'm guessing when he found out he had a son he was going to do everything in his power to have full custody of him," she sadly spoke.

"That explains a lot," I mumbled.

"Yeah, but I'm not going down without a fight. I will not let him so easily take away my son," she sternly spoke.

"Nicholas Ebony Anderson?" Huey questioned.

"I know what you're thinking, but she liked the name," Ebony said already knowing what Huey was thinking.

"I know, I know," Huey said.

"At least she named me after you," Huelene said.

"Yeah, I know! I caught on to it when I first met you," Huey said as Huelene smiled.

"How did the case go?" Huey asked Ebony.

"It was just sad," Ebony answered.

"I swear at the end of all of it, I think that was the breaking point of Jazmine," Ebony exclaimed.

"Nobody would be able to see James or Jazmine because we had a private meeting at the court. During the few days we were working on the case, Jazmine knew James would give the court the evidence of her sickness, including her mugshot from when she was arrested, bank records, her employment history, and so on. They even questioned me about my past when I was younger," Ebony explained.

"So, Jazmine ended up losing the case against Dr. Anderson?" Huey asked knowing the answer.

"Yes, she lost the case, but James also took full custody of Nicholas," Ebony added.

"Judging by Jazmine's background history, they weren't too comfortable with her having custody over Nicholas," Ebony explained.

"Then why would they let her keep Huelene?" Huey asked a little confused.

"Because Jazmine had given us rights to take care of Huelene," Ebony answered.

"Okay," Huey slowly spoke.

"Then what happened afterward?" Huey asked.

"The expected! Jazmine was depressed that she had lost custody over Nicholas and when it came to Huelene she was slowly separating herself from her," Ebony answered.

Despite the fact that Nicole and I were caring for Huelene, we wanted Jazmine to be a part of the little moments in her life. Almost every step of the way, she failed to do so. Jazmine would do the bare minimum whenever we left her alone in the house with Huelene.

She barely changed her diapers, fed her, captured her first moments, ignored her cries, and didn't want to be with her in general. I had no idea what had gotten into her!

I babyproof the house and also made sure to have monitors and cameras in both Jazmine and Huelene's rooms. I, of course, hid the monitors in Jazmine's room so she wouldn't suspect anything.

I wanted to make sure she wouldn't do anything suicidal.

At night, when I thought I would hear Huelene crying it would be Jazmine instead. She would cry about her body, her looks, her mistakes, losing Nicholas, using James, leaving Huey, not seeing Tyrone, not being able to be the best mother, and her lifespan.

Everything upset her!

When Jazmine was out and about, Nicole and I decided to talk about what was going on with Jazmine.

"I just don't know Nicole, she's just been depressed lately," I said rocking Huelene.

"Ebony, Jazmine could just be going through postpartum depression. It's very common in women after they give birth," Nicole said.

"Well does this cause you to detach from your child?" I asked scowling.

"It could, but you also have to understand that Jazmine is going through a lot," Nicole said.

"With the disease, leaving her home and the people she loves, then Dr. Andersons taking her to court and taking full custody of Nicholas, then there is Tyrone, and so on. The list keeps going Ebony," Nicole reminded.

"Yeah, but how can we get rid of it? For all, we know the depression could be making her disease worse," I seriously asked.

"Ebony, I know you're concerned for Jazmine's health, but you have to take into mind that she can really be struggling with coping with everything. People can only take so much and they have to handle the changes," Nicole said.

"I know, I know," I sighed.

"So what do you suggest we do? Get medication or take her to a therapy session?" I asked as Nicole started to think about it.

"I don't think we should do either one of those things because she's already going through so much, and she's pretty strict on people not knowing about her disease," Nicole implied.

"Okay, so what do you think we should do?" I asked awaiting a response.

"We should simply set goals for her," Nicole answered.

"What type of goals?" I asked as she rolled her eyes.

"Goals like cooking, doing yoga, working out a little, spending time with Huelene, and maybe letting her hang out with Tyrone," Nicole suggested.

"I don't mind any of those options except the Tyrone one," I said.

"What, why not?" she asked.

"Because I'm still not sure about the blood situation," I simply answered.

"He and Jazmine possibly could have been telling you the truth," Nicole said trying to convince Ebony.

"Nicole, I know you cannot be this naive to think that he actually had got red sharpie on his knuckles. When we both came into the room he looked mad and Jazmine looked scared. She didn't say much when he was trying to defend himself," I reminded her.

"Yeah, something could have happened between them," Nicole said thinking about it.

"Exactly, and I'm not comfortable with Jazmine going around Tyrone," I said as she just proved my point.

"What about when she has to encounter her at work?" Nicole reminded.

"I highly doubt he comes around her at work anymore. She doesn't talk about him when I pick her up so she might not talk to him," I assured.

"Right!" Nicole said unsure.

"So what was one of the challenges she started with first?" Huey asked.

"Well, she started eating healthy again, taking her medication, doing yoga, she hung out with Tyrone when I specifically asked her not to, going to church, taking care of Huelene, and she made sure to get rid of everything that reminded her of Nicholas," Ebony answered.

"What was one of her biggest challenges?" Huey asked.

"Maybe talking to you and going to go see you," Ebony answered.

"Excuse me?" Huey said a bit taken back.

"Jazmine came to come see me?" Huey asked shocked.

"I'm assuming she did try and go see you," Ebony said.

"But I haven't seen Jazmine since the day she left me," Huey implied.

"But she would be talking to you over the phone," Ebony added.

"I don't remember talking to Jazmine over the phone," Huey said shaking his head.

"Huey, I would hear your voice when she would talk to you," Ebony said.

"When did all of this happen?" Huey asked confused.

I recall Jazmine being in her room almost every Sunday night, talking on the phone with someone. She also did it at the same exact time. It would be 10:00 p.m., and I'd hear her on the baby monitor dialing the number, and the person on the other end of the line would always answer.

She would laugh and always ask how they were doing.

At first, I assume it was Tyrone who she would be talking to over the phone. I thought the two of them would be having phone sex since it was so late, but I soon realized I was wrong.

Whenever Jazmine would be on the phone, I took the baby monitor to the garage so she wouldn't know I was eavesdropping on her. I would have listened to her on the other line but you could hear when the person is listening to your conversations.

The day I found out Jazmine wasn't talking to Tyrone was when I stayed too long in the garage to listen. I usually would just put the baby monitor in the garage and go back to me and Nicole's room to sleep.

When I heard Jazmine dialing on the phone at exactly 10:00 pm, I took the baby monitor and started walking downstairs to the garage. She couldn't hear me since I was good at being quiet.

I quietly opened the garage door and went to go set it on the refrigerator and leave, but then I realized I was thirsty. I opened the refrigerator to grab a bottle of water and I was about to leave until I heard Jazmine's voice.

"Hi Huey!" she softly spoke.

Huey? What the hell was she doing calling Huey this late?

"Hey, Jazz!" I heard him say on the other line. He sounded tired and high!

Was he intoxicated?

"How was your day?" she asked.

"It was long," he answered.

"What'd you do today?" she asked him.

"I went to the library, then drove to work, and I came back home to smoke before I go shower," he simply answered.

"The most relaxing part of your day huh?" she asked.

"Yeah!" he emphasized. Oh yeah, he was definitely high!

He must have a schedule to have a smoke session.

"How are your classes going?" she asked him.

"They're going alright. I got offered an internship at one of the law firms in the downtown area," he informed her.

"Really, that's amazing Huey, are you going to take it?" she asked him.

"I don't know! I don't think they're going to pay me. I still have to work to take care of bills," he said unsure.

"Don't worry about that, I'm pretty sure your job wouldn't mind, and you'll still get paid enough to pay bills and buy groceries," she assured him.

"You think so?" he asked.

"I know so, you should go for the internship! You don't know how it might go, they might start paying you once they see how good your services are," she said.

"You're right Jazz, I'm going to go for it," he said as I could tell he was motivated.

"Yeah, and remember, your goal was to get inside the system and help out the black community. Don't give up on that promise you made to yourself and your community," she reminded.

"Don't worry, I haven't forgotten," he assured.

It was quiet between the two of them until he finally decided to start asking her questions.

"Jazz, I have a question," he said.

"Yes, Huey?" she said.

"Are you safe? I know you don't want to tell me where you're at or what's going on in your life, but I just want to know if you're safe," he asked her.

"Don't worry Huey, I'm safe, you don't have to worry about anything," she assured him.

"You promise?" he unsurely asked.

"I promise!" she said full of reassurance.

"Why did you leave?" he sadly asked.

"It's complicated Huey," she said. "There are things I just can't tell you," she said.

"I understand," he mumbled.

It was quiet between the two of them once again until Jazmine decided to start another topic.

"So, how's your love life going?" she asked with her voice cracking a little.

"It's complicated," he simply answered.

"Why?" she asked.

"I don't know Jazz, every girl I meet, I just don't have a connection with them," he answered.

"Why?" she asked once again.

"They're not you, Jazz!" he answered.

"You don't understand that I didn't grow up knowing these women, I didn't willingly let them take my virginity, I didn't cancel out every female in my life to be with them, I didn't move far away from home so we could start our independence, I wasn't broke with them, I didn't admire their body like I did your's, I didn't get down on one knee and ask them to marry me and use my mother's ring, I didn't plan a future with any of them, I didn't go state to state putting up filers to look for them, and I didn't want to share my last moments with these women," he exclaimed.

"Huey..." Jazmine spoke.

"Jazmine, I don't think I'll ever be able to love again," he said depressed.

"Yes you will!" she said.

"No, I won't! I won't be able to love any woman like I love you," he denied.

"Yes, you will, Huey! You'll be able to move on from me and find love again. You'll graduate from college, be a great lawyer...find a woman and marry her, have kids, travel, start a business, retire, spend time with your grandkids...then you're going to die old in your bed...and be sent to Heaven where you'll see your family again," she sadly spoke with her voice cracking.

"Jazz-" he tried to say until she cut him off: "Huey, don't give up on life, live it to the fullest. The one thing I don't want you doing is wasting your time on me and not being able to find love. I want you to live it to the fullest so that way when you look back on it, you'll move on without regret," she exclaimed.

"What about you, are you going to live life to the fullest?" he asked.

"I honestly don't think I will be able to live life to the fullest. Huey, I'm running out of time, and my insides don't feel right. Everything hurts!" she admitted.

"Jazmine are you sick?" he asked with his tone filled with concern.

"Kind of," she said.

"If you're sick, you need to go to the hospital and get treatment, they might can help you," he said trying to have hope.

"Huey, I have gone to the hospital, and I have tried to receive treatment. Nothing is working and I have to accept the fact I'm not going to be here much longer," she said denying it.

"Jazmine, don't talk like that," he said.

"Just tell me where you're at and I'll come get you and help to make sure you stay alive," he said trying to assure her.

"It's fine Huey, you don't have to. I want you to worry about your own life you have to live. I'll worry about my own," she said.

"Jazz," he said in denial.

"I'll talk to you later, Huey," she said before she hung up the phone. I heard her start crying and I couldn't help but cry too.

I can't believe she's not getting any better!

"I found out two things that day," Ebony said

"One was that Jazmine was secretly talking to Huey while he was high, and two was that she was still sick and she didn't tell anybody," Ebony revealed.

"But I don't remember any of these conversations I had with Jazmine," Huey said still confused.

He was trying to remember any conversations he had with Jazmine and he just couldn't remember any of them. He felt so stupid to let something like this slip.

"I don't expect you to remember. She was talking to you while you were high. You mostly likely forgot the next day and it all seemed like a dream to you," Ebony replied.

"Yeah, but this isn't right. She knew the times I would get high and not remember anything," Huey said trying to contain the cracks in his voice.

He wanted to cry but he couldn't release it. He bit his tongue and swallowed his words.

Silence was key for him in these types of situations.

"Yes, I realized that, and I suggested that she go try and see you," Ebony said.

"Well, did she come and see me?" he asked.

"I think she went by your place, but she didn't see you, but she said she had seen one and spent the day with them, and then she decided to come back home. It was late so I assume she was occupied while she was hanging out with whoever that day," she said.

"Was it Dr. Anderson?" Huey sternly asked.

"No, I highly doubt it was Dr. Anderson, it had to be someone else, but she never told me the name," Ebony informed.

"It couldn't have been a friend from the hospital because they know Dr. Anderson and they would have told me," Huey said thinking about it.

"Yeah, well, I don't know, she was all around the place if you ask me," Ebony said.

"But before she left, she did leave messages for everybody while she was in the hospital," Ebony said as Huey looked at the video camera.

'Could she have left a message for me?' Huey thought.
