Barda, Nura, and Brainiac 5 remained in jail for some time. "If what you've told me is true, Kara Zor-El would be extremely dangerous if she were under Darkseid's control. I must keep her from Ronin," Barda said and then kicked the jail cell open. She proceeded to leave the jail with no one able to stop her.
"What? She can't do that...can she?" Nura protested.
"Evidentally, she can," Brainiac 5 said unconcernedly.
"But that's against the law," Nura pointed out.
"Indeed," Brainiac 5 agreed.
"Alright, I am done sitting around and dreaming the end of this world. Let's go," Nura said enthusiastically.
"Right behind you," Brainiac 5 said following her.
The two of them entered the barn at the Danvers residence. Kara, Alex, and Kenny were already there. "How are you out? You made the news," Alex said to them.
"I'm actually a space cop. So, that makes it okay," Nura said.
"Space cops are a thing?" Kenny chuckled.
"Indeed," Brainiac 5 confirmed.
"So, who was that bitch that attacked you?" Kara asked curiously.
"Her name is Barda, one of Darkseid's furries. But we straightened her out," Brainiac 5 said.
Alex gave Brainiac 5 a dirty look. "Maybe you should be on your way back to the future."
"At this rate, we won't have a future to go back to," Nura said.
"Wait, what is that supposed to mean?" Alex questioned and then got a phone call from her mother taking her out of the scene.
"Kenny Li, I thank you for your service and for giving me exposure to high school. It was truly enlightening," Brainiac 5 said with false sincerity. Kenny gave a bashful laugh at that.
"I don't think I can do all the crazy adventures you two do," Kenny doubted.
"It's not the intensity of the adventure but who you do it with," Brainiac 5 said.
Kara got in Brainiac 5's face. "Kenny may not know when you're making fun of him, but I do."
"You're going to have to tolerate us or your world is going to end," Brainiac 5 stared her down.
"I don't need anyone to save this world. I don't need a team, a league, or a society. You should have let whoever wants me to find me," Kara said darkly.
"There is greater power in converting an enemy than killing one," Brainiac 5 taught.
"I don't have time to deal with your bullshit. I have a prom to get ready for," Kara said dismissively. "So, do you have any specific predictions I should know about?"
Nura simply shook her head. "Well, okay then," Kara rolled her eyes. "Let's go, Kenny," she said dragging him away.
That evening, Kara was dressed for the prom with Alex driving. "Alex, I know you're not thrilled about Kenny and me doing superhero stuff and getting involved in galactic conflicts...," Kara said.
There was an awkward silence between them. "But?" Alex wondered.
"No, that's it," Kara clarified.
"You know, maybe you should be killing bad guys and toppling evil empires. You certainly have the power to do it. I'm not worried about you ever being physically hurt. No one can take you," Alex said.
"Finally, some respect," Kara smiled.
"I'm more concerned about your mind and what all this shit is doing to you. How can anyone kill as many people as you have and not be affected by it? I worry that one day you'll snap and never be happy again. It's why I'm so overprotective of you," Alex said sincerely.
"I'm always joking, Alex. How could I not be happy?" Kara rolled her eyes.
"Comedy is tragedy plus time, Kara. We take horrible things that have happened to us and we try to spin it into something absurd or amusing after the fact. But it doesn't change the fact that it is still a tragedy," Alex said.
"You learn that from Shakespeare?" Kara mocked.
"Fuck it, I tired," Alex threw up her hands.
"Alex, happiness was never in the cards for me. I wasn't born, I wasn't raised, I wasn't sent to this world to be happy. Sometimes, you just get handed bad cards and you can either fold or bluff your way to victory. Or sometimes you go all-in with nothing and you lose everything," Kara said somberly. "It's not your fault I am the way I am. I can handle anything that comes my way."
"Okay," Alex allowed. "Hey, look at that?"
Kara and Alex eyed a number of shooting stars in the night sky. "It's beautiful in a deadly kind of way," Kara said thoughtfully.
"Here's your mask," Alex said handing it over to her.
Kara took the mask as she took her glasses off. "What are you going to be doing?"
"Watching the show," Alex said showing her a brand new camera.
"Really? That sounds boring-as-fuck," Kara commented.
"Get the fuck out of my car and go to prom," Alex ordered.
On Ronin's ship, a hologram of Desaad appeared. "You have been betrayed, Ronin," he informed him.
"We know only that she has been captured. Barda may yet recover the girl," Ronin said defensively.
"No, our sources indicate Barda has her own plans. Your partnership with Darkseid is at risk. Darkseid will speak to you now," Desaad said and then another hologram of Darkseid appeared.
"You done fucked up, boy," Darkseid said to him.
"With all due respect, your daughter got us into this mess," Ronin excused himself.
"I would lower your voice, accuser," Desaad lectured him.
"First, she loses a battle with some primitives.," Ronin began.
"Barda was placed under your care," Desaad pointed out.
"Then she was apprehended by them," Ronin continued.
"And you have nothing to show for it," Desaad added.
"Your sources indicate she meant to betray us the entire time," Ronin accused.
"I would lower your tone!" Desaad lectured.
"I only ask that you take this matter seriously," Ronin demanded of Darkseid.
"The only thing I do not take seriously is you, boy. Your petty politics bore me and apparently, you have alienated my favorite daughter, Barda. I shall honor our agreement, Kree, if you deliver the Kryptonians. But seek an audience with me empty-handed, I will bathe the star-ways with your blood," Darkseid threatened.
Brainiac 5 dressed himself in a tuxedo on the cloaked Vindicator cruiser. He turned to see Nura in a white dress. "I don't know. Do you think it's a little...," Nura said uncertainly. Brainiac 5 scanned the dress as he circled around her.
"It's classical...but not traditional," he judged.
"So?" Nura wondered.
"If I were a heterosexual male human, I would be greatly aroused," Brainiac 5 assured her.
"Thanks," Nura said appreciatively.
"It's customary at a prom for a couple to share a dance. Have you read my instruction manual?" Brainiac 5 asked.
"I skimmed it," Nura looked away.
"Not to worry. Our competition is not fierce," Brainiac 5 said referring to high schoolers. "None-the-less, we should practice."
"Very well," Nura said getting into position.
"I appreciate you telling me your calming technique although I have no need of it, myself," Brainiac 5 said as he danced with her.
"Glad I could help," Nura smiled.
"You still worried about your dream?" Brainiac 5 sensed.
"What if it's warning me about something really important, something life-threatening and that's why it keeps coming back?" Nura asked anxiously.
"Let go of everything you fear to lose," Brainiac 5 taught.
"No fear," Nura agreed.
Brainiac 5 then eyed the ship's computer. "Ronin's ship has entered the atmosphere just on time."
"Let's finish this," Nura said resolved.
At the prom, Kara scanned the school with her X-ray vision and found Kenny staring out the window in a random classroom. "Hey, stargazer. You watching something more beautiful than me?" Kara asked.
"How could you say that? You're a dream come true," Kenny complimented.
"I know, right?" Kara agreed.
"I got these," Kenny said showing her a case with two flowers. He placed one around Kara's wrist.
"Just a couple of teens doing regular teen stuff, right?" Kara asked as she placed the flower on his tux.
"You couldn't be regular even if you tried," Kenny joked. "You said you wanted to tell me something."
"I wanted to tell you that...I love you," Kara said sincerely.
"I kind of figured that after our first kiss, making out, and having sex in the basement of your barn," Kenny nodded.
"No, what this means is that I'll die for you. It means I'd give up everything else in this world for you," Kara said sincerely.
"Sure, me, too," Kenny said awkwardly.
"It's not the same. You see, I'm incredibly unique and special so it means more when I say it," Kara clarified.
"Oh," Kenny realized.
"I'll see you on the dance floor," Kara ordered.
"Sure, Kara," Kenny said leaving the room.
Kara looked up and saw an unusual-looking object burning in the Earth's atmosphere. Suddenly, the object fired a green beam at the school. Kara looked back towards Kenny and the rest of her classmates and then Alex just outside the school. In a split-second decision, Kara tore through the window of the classroom, rammed into Alex's car, and took Alex away from the school. The green beam hit the school blasting it apart and killing most of her senior class including Kenny.
Alex gave a look of shock at the destroyed school and loss of life. Kara got back to her feet and eyed the dark object in the sky. "Oh my God, Kenny!" Alex realized.
"You bastards," Kara said seething with anger.
"Wait, don't go in half-cocked," Alex warned.
Kara gave a scream as she went straight for the ship. Ronin eyed Kara approaching his ship. In his harmer was a green Kryptonite crystal. "You stand accused, Kryptonian," he said and then fired on her.
Kara was hit with the beam and slammed back down to the ground. "Kara!" Alex shrieked.
The US Airforce quickly arrived on the scene and fired missiles at the ship. The missiles exploded harmlessly on the ship's shields. Ronin's ship launched its own fighters in the hundreds. The US Airforce was quickly overwhelmed and forced to retreat. The fighters raided down fire on Midvale destroying city hall, the courthouse, the library, the Talon coffee shop, and the water tower. The town was instantly overwhelmed by the fire.
The city-sized ship lowered down to the ground where Ronin could roll out his armies onto the surface. Nura fired a powerful forcefield around the ship preventing it from moving. Ronin's ship's engines increased their power to resist the shield. "This is actually kind of difficult," Nura said as she strained herself.
"You're doing quite well, all things considered," Brainiac 5 complimented.
The US military sent over more aircraft to counter Ronin's fighters. Every plane and helicopter they could muster was now in the air. Alex made her way over to Kara as the air was filled with explosions and gunfire. "Holy shit," she said fearfully as aircraft from both sides crashed down on the town. She eventually found Kara on her back severely wounded from Kryptonite exposure.
"I may have been rash," Kara admitted.
"Thank God you're alive," Alex said tearfully.
"What for? I'm no use now," Kara said painfully. "I should just give myself up."
"You're going to get back to full power again, and you're going to wreck their shit. You're going to avenge all those they killed, you hear me," Alex encouraged her.
Kara nodded and painfully got back to her feet. "I don't know how long it's going to take. I can barely stand."
In the town square, Supergirl revealed herself to Ronin. "Here I am. Take me," she said.
A spotlight appeared on her and then she was teleported onto Ronin's ship.
As the battle continued to rage, Ronin placed Kara in an interrogation chair. He kept his hammer nearby to weaken her. "The male has much broader shoulders, a strong confident chin, thick thighs, and sexy abs. This female is weak-as-fuck," Ronin said insultingly.
"Stop the assault on the planet, and I'll sleep with you," Kara offered.
"A tempting offer, but I am inclined to use you as bait to bring out the male Kryptonian," Ronin said.
Grail entered the room with her scythe blade. She gave Kara a suspicious look and then caressed her face with her left hand. When Kara didn't immediately sleep, Grail knew the truth. "It's a decoy!" she revealed.
Brainiac 5 extended cables around Grail and Ronin while tearing out of the interrogation chair. Liquid metal flowed off Brainiac 5's skin and formed a humanoid being. The liquid metal Brainiac 5 accessed the ship's computer through a terminal.
"Guards!" Ronin shouted.
Brainiac 5 reprogramed the engines of the ship to take it back into space. Ronin's foot soldiers arrived on the scene and fired on Brainiac 5. Their beams formed holes in Brainiac 5's body on impact. Forming blades on both of his arms, Brainiac 5 sliced them up in quick succession. At the same time, Ronin slammed the first Brainiac 5's face in with his hammer. Grail used her scythe blade to sliced through the cables freeing her. The first Brainiac 5 scrambled about with cables whipping about until Ronin blasted it with his hammer. The second Brainiac 5 was eventually melted down by concentrated plasma fire.
Grail eyed the computer. "He's locked us out."
Ronin rushed to his throne room and tore through the window where he landed on Earth with a thud. "Girl! Come to me!" he shouted. "Or I will scorch the surface of this world."
Kara weakly approached Ronin, still in her prom dress. "Here I am, asshole," she glared.
Ronin blasted her to the ground with his harmer. "So, you're the real one, this time." Kara got back to her feet and tried to fry him with her heat vision but unable to do so. "How pathetic your species is, to have so simple as a rock drain your powers. You're even weaker than the humans."
A force-field bubble appeared around Kara to protect her. Ronin glared at Nura and fired a Kryptonite beam at her from his harmer. Nura used her other hand to block the beam. A plasma beam suddenly hit the hammer blasting it apart. The Kryptonite gem fell to the ground. Ronin turned to find Alex holding a plasma rifle Nura had given her.
"Not so weak after all," Alex smirked as she picked up the Kryptonite gem.
Inside the force-field bubble, Kara regained her powers. As Nura lowered the shield, Kara fired heat vision on Ronin slowly incinerating him on the spot. He cried out in pain and rage as Kara slowly burned him away. "Impossible!" he shouted just before he was vaporized completely.
Kara and Alex looked around at their destroyed town and US military aircraft pieces scattered about. Alex's entire childhood and Kara's only Earth home was gone in the firefight. Kara turned to Nura. "You fucking knew this would happen," she glared.
"I knew something was going to happen. My dreams aren't all that specific," Nura excused.
"I should kill your ass," Kara said angrily.
"Words I've heard from you so many times before," Nura rolled her eyes. "Look, I'll give you another hint if you let me live. It's actually important."
"Alright," Kara allowed.
"In a few minutes, Ronin's ship is going to launch his nuclear missiles on the planet killing all life. I would stop it," Nura advised.
"Who the fuck are you? Really?" Kara demanded.
"I'm your central intelligence agency chief a thousand years from now," Nura said showing her officer rank.
"Not even I live that long," Kara doubted.
"It's actually a funny story. I'll tell you all about it after you destroy that ship," Nura promised.
"I can't blow up a ship looking like this," Kara said at her burned prom dress.
"I got you," Nura said taking out a small device that created a Supergirl suit over Kara.
"Wow, that's...different," Alex remarked.
Kara eyed the Supergirl outfit. "Is this a joke?"
"The joke is when your enemies get killed by someone that looks like you," Nura said knowingly.
"I can get behind that," Kara nodded and then flew up into the air.
Onboard Ronin's ship, Grail worked to manually fire the nuclear missiles. As she assembled her men, she was confronted by Barda who had snuck aboard. "Grail, please. We're done here."
"Darkseid will never let us return without victory," Grail said to her.
"Then let us make a life for each other here, in peace," Barda beseeched her.
"I'm going to kill both Kryptonians on this planet and blame Ronin for this fuck-up," Grail refused.
The two clashed with their blades. In a ferocious fight between them, Grail sliced deep into Barda's side with her scythe blade. Barda disarmed Grail and kicked her away. "Help us fight Darkseid. You know he's crazy," Barda said to her.
"You're the only one crazy if you think you can fight Darkseid," Grail rebuked. Using both hands, Grail tried to get a touch on Barda. With her left hand, a touch meant sleep. With her right hand, a touch meant death. Barda locked Grail's arms up and sliced both her hands off. Grail fell to her knees stunned.
"Order them to stand down," Barda said to her.
"It's too late," Grail said to her.
Barda felt her side and fell to the floor mortally wounded. Suddenly, the ship was breached by Kara. She ripped through the entire ship blasting away everything in front of her with heat vision. In seconds, the ship was internally gutted. She exited the ship and watched it internally explode. Barda smiled amazed at Kara's power. "Maybe, there is hope after all."
The ship then exploded before it could launch its missiles. The debris fell into the atmosphere as harmless meteorites.
Older Kara and Nyxly looked over the ruined town of Midvale. Cops, firefighters, and emergency responders were everywhere to save as many lives as they could, which wouldn't be very many. There were destroyed aircraft and bodies everywhere. "You seriously expect me to accept this future over what I already had?" Kara scoffed.
"It's meant to be a lesson, Kara," Nyxly said obviously.
"What's the lesson? That letting Kenny get killed is okay because otherwise, this would happen?" Kara asked skeptically.
"I've just freed you from your guilt," Nyxly said simply.
"My guilt, huh? It's not always about consequences," Kara said as she looked at the burning town. "I let Kenny die because I didn't give a fuck. I let his killer go free for years because I wanted an easy buck. I wanted the privilege that comes with owning my very own sheriff. I was...wrong."
"Well, maybe we can do another do-over," Nyxly suggested.
"What the fuck for? I've made wrong choices in my life. I've gone left when I was supposed to go right. I know my own weaknesses. I don't need you to give me a tour of them. Pain and guilt can't be taken with the wave of a magic wand. The things we carry with us are the things that make us who we are. We lose them, we lose ourselves. I don't want my pain taken away. I need my pain!" Kara told her off.
"You willing to send Kenny, an innocent boy, to the void of nothingness?" Nyxly asked her. "Are you that callous?"
"I am the Supreme Leader of the Galactic Federation and the greatest superhero that has ever existed. If I believed everyone that I failed to save went to the void for eternity, I wouldn't be able to live with myself. But I have faith that isn't the case. Someday, I will die, too. And when that day comes, I'll ask Kenny for forgiveness," Kara said to her.
"Sentimental nonsense," Nyxly scoffed at her.
"Eternity will come for us both. It may take the heat death of the universe for you to die, but it will come. Eternity is the same for us all," Kara told her.
"Very well," Nyxly said snapping her fingers. Midvale returned to how it was in the original timeline.
"We done here?" Kara asked impatiently.
"Oh, I'm finished with you, Kara Zor-El. But do you think your father will be so noble once he finds out what you've done, who you are? Perhaps, he might be willing to make some changes," Nyxly smiled.
Author's Notes: The entire plot of this episode revolves around Brainiac 5 and Nia being incompetent imbeciles when it came to the blue aliens in the first three minutes. The CW lesson is that it's okay to be a total idiot if you have a time machine. CW Kara is the inverse of my Midvale Kara. CW Kara has no confidence or direction and is always being bossed around by Alex. That breakup scene with Kenny was painful, more so than his off-screen death in Season 3. We're supposed to respect CW Kara's decision to break up with Kenny, abandon her town, and stop being a superhero only to break that decision several years later. If I were Kenny, I would be pissed off. CW gave us one Midvale episode in Season 3 that is now retconned away and these two episodes. After SG 6x07 there is a very long break until August. So, after 6x07, Adventures of Supergirl will transition back to Superman and Lois until its finale. After alien invasions, going back in time, and the phantom zone, we need to get back to finding out what Morgan Edge is up to in Smallville. A Falcon and Winter Soldier bonus episode is in the works. Justice League Snyder Cut will be released at some point.
