Kara called up Lana to discuss how she would be a spy for her against Morgan Edge. "So, what should I be looking for?" Lana asked.
"You know, weird shit. He must have some kind of machine that uses X-Kryptonite to make people super," Kara said.
"Is there a way to know if someone already has powers?" Lana asked anxiously.
"Not really. I just know Leslie Larr has powers so safe to assume others do as well. Just assume everyone in the office has powers including the janitor," Kara said.
"Damn," Lana said freaked out.
"What you're doing is completely not safe. I would update your life insurance policy," Kara warned.
"It's okay. I want to help," Lana said sacrificially. "I'll call you if I find anything."
Mon entered the room and eyed a photo of an old black man. "Who is this?" he asked accusingly.
"The real Marcus Bridgewater," Kara said.
"Who?" Mon wondered.
"Our Stranger scrubbed all Marcus Bridgewater's photos from the Internet. Luckily, I know some people at Reuters that still had a photo," Kara said, proud of herself.
"That does sound like something a Luthor would do," Mon remarked. "So, two people working for Edge have attacked you so far."
"I'm sure there are others," Kara figured.
"Should we tell the kids?" Mon wondered.
"Kon will try to kill Edge immediately and Mara will try to infiltrate his organization, so no," Kara rejected.
"This town is a lot more interesting than I thought it would be," Mon mused.
"All I wanted to do in this town is completely sack it. I had no idea I would be fighting Edge in the corporate sphere, dealing with metahumans, and a black Luthor," Kara said.
"I think they can handle this," Mon said confidently.
"Yeah, because you don't give a shit if this all goes really badly," Kara rolled her eyes. "I'm going to go find the former Mr. Bridgewater. Be on call."
"Okay," Mon shrugged.
Edge was noticeably pissed off at his office. Leslie Larr, recovered from her injuries, stood next to him. "Why haven't you ID'd the man with Danvers in the mine?" he asked.
"Believe me, I've looked. We have no matches from the security footage. The man's a ghost...a black ghost but a ghost nonetheless," Leslie said defensively.
"A very well-armed ghost," Edge said annoyed.
"I've told you before. It was Danvers that attacked me. She has powers as well," Leslie said.
"That sounds like bullshit," Edge disagreed. "If Danvers really did have powers, she would have stopped me by now. So, how are we going to get that X-Kryptonite out of the mines?"
"Maybe we should send out a small shipment and see who comes for it. The intel could be valuable," Leslie suggested.
"A small fragment," Edge allowed. "Do not fail me again, Leslie," he warned.
As Leslie exited the room, Lana came in. "Oh, shit," Lana said getting out of Leslie's way as she stormed out.
Morgan smiled at Lana. "Shall we walk together?" he invited.
"So, you want me to do what now?" Lana asked confused.
"I'm looking for people I can trust, who have passion, and won't let power get to their heads. I need people like you, who I can tap for potential. I need you to help them achieve their best selves," Morgan said.
"Wow, that's really vague," Lana frowned. "How many candidates are we looking for?"
"How about...five?" Morgan said. "I'm expecting great things from you, Lana," he said as he walked off.
Lana went the other way having no clue what Edge wanted from her.
Kara went up to Marcus' RV and knocked on the door. She had already scanned the RV for Kryptonite and found nothing. Marcus came to the door looking anxious. "Kara Danvers," he addressed politely.
"That's a nice Desert Eagle you got there," Kara smirked having scanned his pant pockets.
"I know, right?" Marcus agreed. "You want to come in and talk?"
"That's a hard pass on your creepy mobile. Also, I haven't entered a trailer since I've become rich," Kara declined.
"That's actually quite hurtful and unfair," Marcus said offended.
"I don't give a shit," Kara said dismissively.
"Meet me at Victoria Maze for a chat...or I'll kill you," Kara smiled and walked off.
Flashback-Earth-23
Kara was on top of Marcus making out with him in bed. "You thinking about our sex marathon last night?" Kara teased.
"Absolutely," Marcus smiled.
"Let me burn all your clothes off you," Kara said eagerly.
Their daughter then barged in. "Childhood ruined, therapy needed," she said as she saw them making out. "Look, I'm not going to be tardy because you can't keep your hands off each other."
"This is love and affection between husband and wife. It's beautiful," Marcus rebuked her.
"Yeah, I know. You two are the most affectionate people I've ever seen in my life," she rolled her eyes.
"Hey, show, don't tell," Kara said as she began to kiss Marcus passionately.
Suddenly, the city was hit with explosions. All three of them looked out the window. Superman floated above the city ready to make some needed changes. Other Kryptonians joined Superman. They began firing heat vision beams at the city killing thousands in short order.
"Well, that's not something you see every day," Marcus said dryly.
"I have to face him," Kara said already in her Supergirl uniform.
"You can't win," Marcus doubted.
"I have to try," Kara said becoming serious, and then flew out the window.
End Flashback
While Kon ditched school to train with his father, Mara met up with Sara at her locker. "I didn't see you eat lunch. Are you anorexic again?" Mara asked.
"Wow, how about you tell me why Kon isn't at school today?" she countered.
"He's sick, possibly Covid," Mara lied.
"Right," Sara doubted and walked off.
Mara kept pace with her as she walked down the halls. "Is something wrong?"
"You're lying to me," she accused.
"About what in particular?" Mara asked confused.
"It's just I got kidnapped by Tag and now Kon isn't at school. It's just kind of weird," Sara said.
"I assure you, they have nothing to do with each other," Mara lied.
"That's not what Tag said," Sara said skeptically.
"Because of the video?" Mara asked knowingly. "Truth be told, the reason Kon isn't at school is that Tag jumped him and messed him up."
"Why didn't he tell me?" Sara asked distressed.
"He has Insane pride," Mara replied.
"Fine, whatever," Sara allowed.
Kara and Mon walked down the streets of Smallville. "I'm not sure I like you being alone with a black man," Mon said.
"Really?" Kara shook her head dismayed at him.
"Why am I even here?" Mon asked.
"In case he has some weird-ass device that can actually hurt a Kryptonian. Just stay outside," Kara ordered. Kara entered the diner and sat down across from Marcus. "I ordered a latte for you. It's almost entirely cream, milk, and sugar just the way you like it," Marcus said.
"I think we should get to know each other...intimately," Kara said as she stared at his bald head, his smooth black skin, the scar that went down the right side of his face, his piercing brown eyes...
"The butter churner is your favorite sex position," Marcus revealed.
Kara simply gave him a blank look neither confirming nor denying it. "What's important is what Edge is planning. He's making an army," Marcus said seriously.
"To do what?" Kara asked not taking him seriously.
"To take over the world," Marcus said.
"Of course!" Kara shouted earning odd stares from others in the diner.
"Metropolis will be the first city to fall," Marcus whisper.
"Good, I fucking hate that city," Kara said relieved. "Why should I believe you?"
The two stared at each other. "Hold that thought," Kara said as she answered her phone. "What?!"
"I have a source that told me about an Edge shipment. It might be X-Kryptonite," Chrissy said.
"I'll look into it," Kara said and hung up. She went back to Marcus. "We'll have to pick this up another time. I have people to whack."
"Kara, this is serious. I need to talk to you before Superman comes back with an army from Argo," Marcus said.
"Let him try," Kara rolled her eyes and walked out of the diner leaving Marcus befuddled.
Kara entered her truck and found Mon already in the passenger seat. "That was fast," he said surprised.
"I just got a call from Chrissy. Edge is on the move. Did you check his RV?" Kara asked.
"Yeah, he's got this drone that is dumb-as-fuck. It addressed me as Luthor before identifying me," Mon said.
Kara drove the truck down the road. "So, you know how I've been trying to hook you up with Lana to resolve unfinished issues she has with Clark?"
"I do recall having that conversation," Mon said intrigued.
"So...I still have some unresolved issues with Lex from the time we were lovers in Midvale. I just think...," Kara said.
"No, no, fuck no, no," Mon refused.
"What's your problem, asshole?" Kara snapped at him.
"He doesn't even look like our Lex," Mon pointed out.
"In what way?" Kara asked.
"Well, for starters, he's black," Mon said obviously.
"And?" Kara wondered.
"And he's a bitch," Mon said referring to how he easily defeated him.
"Okay, well, maybe he can massage my feet. That's not so bad," Kara said.
"Fuck that," Mon disagreed.
"It's not sexual. What's the big deal?" Kara asked.
"Would you let Lena give you a foot massage?" Mon questioned.
Kara hesitated to answer. "Fuck you," she muttered.
"That's right," Mon said victoriously. "Wait, is it still incest if this Luthor hooks up with Lena?"
"It is the multiverse. They may not have any genetic link so I guess it's okay," Kara said thoughtfully. "So, they're up ahead still. Four guys with guns are in the back."
"What do you want to do?" Mon asked.
"Just keeping following and they'll lead us to the X-Kryptonite," Kara shrugged. "Damn it. Black Luthor already beat us to the punch."
"How's that possible? He's driving an RV and you drive like a maniac," Mon pointed out.
"Get rid of the escort van," Kara ordered him.
Mon activated his Superman suit, put on his facial mask, fixed his hair, and then sped out of the vehicle. He took the armed van out of the area and put it on top of a rock formation. Marcus stopped the truck with the shipment with a rifle in his hand. "Get out of the truck. Get on your knees and put your hands on your head," he ordered the driver.
Marcus put zip ties on the driver's hands and ordered him not to move. Marcus then placed a device on the truck doors which caused the locks to blast off. Kara and Mon casually drove up to Marcus to have a chat. "Looks like you have it handled," Kara said impressed.
"I know, right?" Marcus smiled as he entered the truck and got the X-Kryptonite case.
"You know, we could have followed the truck to its destination. You kind of fucked up my intelligence mission," Kara said peeved.
"I couldn't risk this arriving at its destination," Marcus said referring to the X-Kryptonite.
"I think we have a failure to communicate. Tell us what you know, now," Kara ordered.
"Fine, follow me," Marcus invited.
At school, Mara had some difficulty with her locker. She slammed it shut a few times and when that didn't work she used her strength to force it closed. Sara came up to Mara as she locked up. "I want to apologize for accusing you of lying," she said apologetically.
"It's fine," Mara allowed.
"No, it's not," she shook her head. "I'm really worried about Tag and you and Kon are the only ones that really know what happened."
"Tag will be okay," Mara lied.
"I just want to have people I can talk to about these things," Sara said lamely.
"You can rely on me if you need anything," Mara said with false sincerity.
Kara forced the lead container open revealing X-Kryptonite crystals still in Marcus' hands. "This is shit. How can Edge create an army with this amount?" she questioned Marcus.
"Probably a decoy to know who is on his trail," Marcus figured.
"Well, now that the bastard knows, what's our next move?" Kara asked.
"I don't know. We just need to be ready," Marcus said vaguely.
"Fine, we can work together. But I want that shit," Kara said pointing to the X-Kryptonite.
"Fine," Marcus relented handing it over to her.
Once Kara and Mon were back in the truck with the box, Kara turned to Mon. "Go to the DOD and run the prints. See if this guy is an ex-military whacko or really from another universe," she ordered.
Mara came home and found Kon at the house. He had been listening to death metal through his headphones all day on the pretext he was guarding the house while both Mon and Kara were away. "You had a chat with Sara," Kon said accusingly.
"You spying on me?" Mara glared.
"Just answer the question," Kon pressed.
"I conversed with her as normal. Mostly, I was covering for you," Mara said defensively.
"It sounded too friendly," Kon said.
"I don't have the time nor the inclination to deal with your insecurities," Mara shut him down.
"That wasn't a denial," Kon noted.
"I've had your back every time someone has called you weird, dumb, stupid, awkward, psychotic...," Mara listed off. "But it's all true. Don't you ever spy on me again!"
Kon took a step back as Mara was about to explode the house in a rage. Mara glared at him and then went upstairs to cool down.
Morgan Edge looked over Lana's candidates. "Quite a diverse group of characters," he remarked: a blond woman, a black woman, a black man, and an Asian man.
"Well, there is no shortage of good people in Smallville," Lana said brightly.
"There's one still left," Edge pointed out.
"Yes, I've been going through all the resumes," Lana admitted.
"Is that all?" Edge questioned.
"I don't understand," Lana said obliviously.
"Were you hoping I would choose someone a little closer to home? Your husband perhaps. I figure he would be more than interested," Morgan suggested.
"Of course, but he's already chief of the fire department," Lana brought up.
"Arrangements could be made," Edge said coyly.
"It would be an amazing opportunity but it would be a lot for us to deal with," Lana said referring to her girls.
"I understand but we are short on time," Edge said reasonably. "I look forward to hearing your decision on the last one."
Kara went back to the Smallville Gazette to talk to Chrissy. "So...you do realize that Lex Luthor is white and this guy is black, right?" Chrissy asked Kara.
"Chrissy, I'm color-blind. I don't see race," Kara said obnoxiously.
"There's no one on the Luthor family tree that resembles that description," Chrissy said flatly.
"Well, I guess I'll just squeeze the answers out of him," Kara said darkly.
Supergirl entered a warehouse and found Marcus working near his RV. Marcus gave Kara the evil eye. "Interesting place for a meet," Kara remarked.
"I'm a builder. I've always felt comfortable in places like this," Marcus replied.
"Why am I here?" Kara asked unimpressed with her surroundings.
"The world is about to be destroyed unless I save it," Marcus said simply.
"And how exactly do you intend to do that?" Kara asked not taking him seriously.
"By eliminating the threat," Marcus said vaguely.
"You mean Edge?" Kara wondered.
"He's involved but he won't be the main source of destruction," Marcus said.
"And who will be?" Kara asked losing patience.
"I think you know," Marcus said.
"I really don't," Kara frowned.
Marcus turned on red sun lamps around her. "What's this supposed to do?" Kara scoffed.
"Your cells will naturally absorb the useless red sunlight replacing the yellow sunlight that gives you your power," Marcus said confidently.
"I guess I'm fucked," Kara said still standing.
Marcus got himself a bad-ass hammer. "This hammer absorbs kinetic energy. With enough distance, I can take you down."
"Show me," Kara said intrigued.
"I'll do it," Marcus warned her.
"Do it. I'm right here," Kara challenged.
Marcus threw the hammer at her hitting her hard to the chest. "Wow, I actually felt that," Kara said impressed.
"This hero act of yours is all propaganda. A way for you to soften the masses before you turn on them," Marcus accused.
"You're not wrong," Kara smirked. "Why you being an asshole to me all of a sudden? Your real enemy is Superman. I'll call him over here from Argo and I'll even help you kick his ass."
"No, you're the real threat, Kara. I soon realized it once I arrived on this planet. You're far more powerful than Superman is, and I've read about all of your adventures. You have to be stopped," Marcus said as he went for another strike.
Kara backhanded Marcus into some boxes stunning him. Kara then fired heat vision at the RV deactivating the annoying red sun lamps. Kara went up to a bleeding Marcus, cocked her fist back, and went for the kill.
"Stop," Mara said arriving on the scene with Kon. "It's over," she noted.
"How?" Marcus asked stupified.
"It's called reserves. It would take thousands of years under red sunlight before I even noticed a difference," Kara told him.
"Then, it's as I feared," Marcus realized.
Morgan Edge had a pissed-off expression while still at the office. Lana had just given the last slot to an Asian woman instead of her husband. Although he had completed diversity bingo, he was suspicious that Lana was reluctant to put her husband forth. "This better be good news," Morgan said to Leslie as she entered.
"The X-Kryptonite shipment has arrived. Everything is ready to move forward," Leslie reported.
"So, your plan worked," Morgan realized.
"More than I anticipated," Leslie said, proud of herself.
"Lucky you," Morgan said shutting her down. "There's no guarantee this diverse group of individuals will work. You're the only one that hasn't shown any signs of rejection."
"You have to break a few eggs to make an omelet," Leslie allowed.
"Indeed. And now we have our eggs," Edge said pleased.
Kara and Mon drank wine and had a chat on the porch. "What if he was right? What if I do conquer the world?" Kara wondered.
"Conquering one planet? Please," Mon rolled his eyes.
"I just realized you're the last person I should talk to about this," Kara shook her head. "You know, if I was weak-as-fuck like Superman, I might have died tonight."
"He did have a good plan," Mon complimented.
"I almost killed him but then the kids stepped in," Kara mused.
"We can interrogate his ass in the morning. Find out what he knows," Mon said unconcernedly.
Kon entered Mara's room inside the house. "I'm sorry I was spying on you and that you have to lie about me all the time," he said sincerely.
"It hurts every time because it's intentional," Mara said glumly.
"I want things to go back to normal so bad...like how we were in the future. With you running cities and me assassinating bad guys," Kon recalled fondly.
"I was scared we wouldn't get to mother in time," Mara said.
"The way you guilt-tripped mother into not killing that guy was awesome," Kon said amused.
Mon and Kara entered the room. "Don't interfere in our missions like that again," Mon scolded. "In this case, the bad guy needed to live because he has valuable intel. But, it may also be necessary for either of us to put down a mother-fucker."
"Yeah, you both saved my soul or whatever," Kara said dismissively. "It's time I told you some secrets about that guy I nearly killed. You see, in another universe, I was his wife. And apparently, we had a very healthy sex life. Not as good as what I have with your father, mind you."
"Of course," Mon nodded.
"But pretty good, nonetheless," Kara clarified.
"Your mother does have a thing for good-looking black guys," Mon said referring to James.
Kon and Mara simply stared at their parents dismayed by what they were hearing. "Anyway, the Superman of his universe was a dick. So, he fears I will turn out the same way," Kara said.
"Like when Batman tried to kill Superman that one time?" Kon asked.
"Yeah, like that only this guy has some serious PTSD from something that really did happen to him," Kara said.
"But as we all know, I will always be here to keep your mother in check," Mon assured them.
"The fuck you will," Kara doubted.
Mon lightly touched Kara's shoulder and the two of them disappeared.
