Nyxly suddenly appeared in Nia's apartment and looked over the entire room. "Everything...is pink," she noted while wearing a bad-ass black uniform. "What the fuck?" Nia wondered waking up.
"Relax Naltorian," Nyxly said as she toured around the apartment. "You'll have your mother back for one day if you keep your mouth shut. That means no telling anyone, no dreams of the future, no zip."
"Fine," Nia agreed.
"Let's get this over with so I can get to my business," Nyxly said impatiently.
"What business?" Nia wondered.
"You need not be concerned with my plans," Nyxly said menacingly.
"I think I should," Nia said confronting her.
Nyxly blasted her to the floor. "Where's my mother?" Nia demanded. Nyxly snapped her fingers and instantly disappeared. In the mirror, Nia could see her mother's reflection. Turning around, Nia gasped as she saw her mother in the flesh in her apartment.
"Nia," Isabel said to her with a bewildered face.
"Mother," Nia embraced her.
"My darling, what have you done?" Isabel asked her.
"I made a deal with a fifth-dimensional imp that said I could see you for a day if I just kept my mouth shut about the future," Nia admitted.
"No, I meant, you're a girl now," Isabel said confused.
"Wait...what?" Nia cringed.
Kara stood in front of an American flag background while the cameras rolled. "Hello, I'm your friendly neighborhood Supergirl. Do you know how I stay strong and sharp? I eat my greens," Kara said revealing a plate of random green vegetables. "You see, kids, I used to eat a lot of crullers. God, they're so good," Kara said and then stared off into space as she contemplated endless plates of them. She then snapped out of it.
"But kids, if you eat sweets all day you'll end up a fat-ass with diabetes. I wouldn't be able to stop half of all the crime I do without eating my greens. So, start eating your greens and exercise so the mayor doesn't have to put out another soda tax," Kara ordered.
"And cut," Cat said from the director's chair.
"I can't believe you made me do this," Kara said and then stared at the plate of vegetables. "Get that the fuck away from me," she ordered the Daily Planet staff as if it were green Kryptonite.
"It's perfect for your image. Your hair is a little weird but no one other than the gay fashionistas will notice," Cat said.
"Why do I get the impression that every week I'm bringing up a new pet cause?" Kara wondered.
"Because you're out of time and you have so much you want to say," Cat said obviously.
"I want to work on mental health or the welfare system," Kara said ambitiously.
"You are the least qualified person on the planet to discuss those sorts of issues," Cat rolled her eyes. "Healthy eating is important. How do you think I stay so thin and beautiful way into my fifties?"
"Not everyone can afford your physical trainers, chefs, and plastic surgeons," Kara mocked. "I can't let this shit go live."
"It already has," Cat informed her.
"What?!" Kara shouted shaking the studio. "It's fine, it's cool, It's fine," Kara calmed herself down.
"You already have five hundred thousand views," Cat smiled.
Kara looked like she was having a panic attack and then noticed something wrong. She immediately zipped away out of the studio.
In the Tower, Alex was royally kicking Kelly's ass. Like, it wasn't even competitive. "Come on, get me on the ground," Alex encouraged her. Despite all of Kelly's efforts, she was no match. Alex placed Kelly in a headlock. "You got this."
Kelly got out of the headlock only to be thrown to the floor. Kara then flashed onto the scene and then relaxed as she realized Alex wasn't in danger. "Oh, I remember my training days," Kara recalled. "The ones with your father, not you," Kara clarified.
"I recall kicking your ass under Kryptonite emitters," Alex glared.
"I recall letting you win so as to not shatter your precious ego. You should have seen Alex when I first joined the DEO. First, she was under the illusion I knew nothing about her job for the last two years. Then, she was under the impression her two years of training could close the gap between us," Kara mocked.
"What are you trying to say, Kara?" Alex asked getting close to her.
"The gap between Kelly and you is the same as between you and me even under Kryptonite," Kara boasted.
"Bullshit," Alex doubted.
"Hold that thought," Kelly said as her phone rang.
Kara and Alex patiently waited for Kelly to get off the phone. "Looks like Orlando's apartment didn't go through. God, that man has terrible credit. He may need an intervention by someone white, rich, and powerful," Kara smiled.
"You worked behind the scenes to reject his application so he would come running to you," Alex accused.
"I am hurt and offended by such a reckless accusation," Kara denied.
"I don't know what happened but I have to be there for Joey," Kelly said. "I promised I would have his back."
"I said the same thing to Orlando but it was in a more sexual context," Kara added.
"Fix this," Alex ordered Kara.
Kara stared at Alex as every instinct in her body wanted to resist, scream, and mock her. However, she had to play relatively nice in front of Kelly. "Sure, I will. I always do," she said as she walked off with Kelly.
A frustrated Orlando slammed a basketball against a wall in some alley. Kara caught the basketball with one hand and then rolled it back towards him. "Supergirl, what are you doing here?" he asked spooked.
"I heard you lost your housing. I am so sorry," Kara said with false sincerity.
"Same old story," Orlando shrugged. "As soon as things start to get better, the world knocks you back down."
"I am the world," Kara said arrogantly. "I'm the tech company that bought out the Section 8 housing. I am going to make a fortune in rent and real estate value increases."
Orlando simply gave her a blank look. "I'm crashing on a friend's couch now."
"So sad, so horrible," Kara rolled her eyes. "I told you not to fuck with me. I gave you a generous offer and you turned me down," Kara pointed out.
"So, I do whatever you say or no housing, no job," Orlando realized.
"No shit, Sherlock," Kara said obviously. "I own the city council. I am completely redesigning this city."
"Thanks for your help, Supergirl, but I'm going to do this on my own," Orlando refused her.
"Until you accept my offer, things are going to get a lot worse," Kara told him and then flew off.
Kara entered the Daily Planet in civilian clothes. As she exited the elevator, she was talking to her real estate agent. "Buy, buy, and sell," Kara ordered and then hung up. Instead of immediately reporting to Cat, Kara looked over her real estate forms. Brainiac 5 met up with her as she went to her desk. "How's the city council vote looking?" Kara asked.
"Your odds are still good," Brainiac 5 reported.
"Nothing can interfere with that vote," Kara said passionately. "You recall how we shuffled the human population across the globe according to their rank and occupations?"
"I was there," Brainiac 5 confirmed.
"We need to have that happen here. Low-skilled workers with low education and low income should be removed from the major cities to the rural areas where the cost of living is low enough for them. A fast-food worker single mom is never going to make it in the big city. It's not how much you make, it's how much you can save for investments. That is how wealth is created," Kara said.
"Preaching to the choir but mobility is at an all-time low in this country," Brainiac 5 said.
"We need to fix that. It must be a privilege for only the rich and elite to be in the major cities with this view, this coastline, this perfect weather," Kara said looking out the window.
"If you relocate the poor to the rural areas, who will make your coffee?" Brainiac 5 asked.
"Automation," Kara said simply. "We don't need the poor, they need us," she said referring to rich people.
"Your plans to replace Section 8 housing with your own apartment complex is economically and financially sound. The only question is the political will of the city council," Brainiac 5 said.
"Supergirl is going to need to make an appearance to make sure the vote goes the right way," Kara concluded. "I will make them see the benefits of population redistribution as opposed to wealth redistribution."
"Working on your own personal causes with company time and resources?" Cat accused.
"I don't get paid and I'm using my own personal computer," Kara said patting Brainiac 5 on the back.
"But you are using my oxygen," Cat pointed out.
"Damn," Kara realized.
"If you want to make sure you'll win that vote, you're going to need to do Q and A for me on social media," Cat said.
"I don't think that's necessary," Kara declined.
"We are living in a technological age where just one tweet can cause a revolution," Cat said.
"You referring to January sixth? Because that's in poor taste," Kara mocked.
"This social media takeover can promote your causes all across the world in a millisecond just like your PSA going viral," Cat said.
"Speaking of which...," Kara said.
"The view count is now over a million," Brainiac 5 reported.
Kara gave a horrified look. "You can thank me later," Cat smiled as she walked off.
Nia found herself in the dark forest with her mother teaching her. "Ha, I did it! What is that?" she wondered of an ice-cage.
"You tell me," Isabel said to her.
Ravens suddenly appeared and circled her. Nia powered up her hands to shield herself when she nearly blasted her mother. "Holy shit," she realized.
"You have to fight the impulse to run, Nia," her mother said. "You must never exit a dream out of fear."
"I'm not afraid," Nia scoffed totally lying. "I'm just distracted."
"There are no distractions in the dream realm. Everything here is for a reason. What do the ravens mean?" Isabel asked.
"That the Baltimore Ravens will win the Superbowl?" Nia guessed.
"Close but not quite. Connect your deepest self with that of the universe. What do the ravens mean to you?" Isabel asked.
Nia then saw a dollhouse in the middle of the forest. "That was my old dollhouse," Nia recalled. She then went inside the dollhouse to her bedroom. "Who are you?" a ten-year-old boy asked her.
"Oh, fuck me," Nia realized she was now encountering her younger self.
With Brainiac 5's assistance, Kara went in front of the camera for a live Q and A session with the common people. In front of the camera, Kara hid her disgust as appreciative moms remarked that their kids were eating their vegetables because of her. "What's the first question?" Kara asked, pumped, ready to roll.
"There are a lot of questions about broccoli," he noted. "What are the health benefits of broccoli?"
"The health benefits of broccoli include its ability to prevent cancer, improve digestion, lower cholesterol levels, detoxify the body, and maximize vitamin and mineral uptake. It also prevents allergic reactions, boosts the immune system, protects the skin, prevents birth defects, lowers blood pressure, eliminates inflammation, and improves vision and ocular health," Kara said to the camera and was immediately given a cluster of thumbs-ups.
"Is broccoli your favorite vegetable?" another asked.
"Broccoli came to American through Italian immigrants. It is a vegetable that dates back to Roman times. I find that pretty bad-ass," Kara said.
"Supergirl, your opinion on converting Section 8 housing to for-profit apartment complexes surprises me. I live in Section 8. I don't want to be evicted or forced out because of rent increases," one man said on the video screen.
"The deal is going to bring improvements to the general area. With higher property taxes and commercial revenue, you'll see improved parks, playgrounds, less crime, better traffic conditions, and the schools will be improved," Kara said.
"Supergirl, you're in the pocket of the rich elites. You're always talking about hope and change but you're a hypocrite," one woman accused her.
"I'm not in the pocket of the rich. The rich are in my pocket and so is this city," Kara corrected. "For too long, cities have allowed themselves to be inefficient in order to provide affordable housing for low-income residents. That ends today. If you're low-income and struggling to get by, leave the city and take root in rural communities. The city is a hell hole, filled with trash, crime, traffic, graffiti, and failing public institutions. It can't be fixed, it can't be corrected. If you're struggling, I invite you to leave while you still can," Kara said to the camera.
Kara entered the Tower only to be scolded by Alex. "What the fuck was that? You're encouraging poor people to just get out of town. Just...fuck'em," Alex said outraged.
"Why are you so surprised?" Kara wondered.
"I thought maybe you would learn some compassion from Kelly's casework," Alex said.
"It has only increased my resolve," Kara corrected.
"These people have lived in the cities for generations. They don't know anything else. They don't have either the resources or the know-how to relocate to some town in Arkansas," Alex argued.
"I can see how it could be hard to imagine any individual doing that but on a macro-level over a decade's time, there will be results. Barney and I will squeeze the poor out of the cities with rising rent and taxes," Kara said.
"It won't work. You'll simply create even greater wealth and income inequality in the cities. The poor won't move and they'll be even worse off," Alex said. "The poor have a right to live in cities just as everyone else does."
"No, living in a city is a privilege, not a right. If you can't make it in the city, get the fuck out," Kara said seriously.
"Is this how your city works in the future?" Alex asked scornfully.
"No, in the future, everyone has a rank and occupation. They are assigned a city, town, or fort just like soldiers in the army. When someone ranks up or changes their occupations, they apply to a different location in need of them. All housing is provided by the state in accordance with their rank," Kara said.
"So, why not do that?" Alex asked argumentatively.
"Your fucked up system won't allow me to," Kara said obviously. "I'm just doing the best I can with what I got here."
"Or maybe you're sabotaging Metropolis on purpose so I'll go with you," Alex accused.
"I can't speak to Kara's motives but I have given her guidance on this issue," Brainiac 5 chimed in.
Alex glared at Hank for his opinion. "Don't look at me," he threw his hands up.
Alex then turned back to Kara. "You will call off this deal or our deal is off."
"You emotionally blackmailing me?" Kara asked staring her down.
"Call it whatever you want," Alex said not backing down.
Kara gave her a flustered look. "They're just ants," she muttered.
"Not to me," Alex said to her.
Kara looked away and then back to Alex. "I...," she stammered and then flew out of the Tower.
In the dollhouse, Nia bent down next to her ten-year-old boy self as he played with a truck. "What is that in your hand?" he asked her.
Nia looked down and found a ball in her hand. An angry giant eyeball glared at her. "Holy shit," she said dropping it.
"It's beautiful. Can I have it?" Neil asked even as it continued to make alien noises.
"I don't think it's safe," Nia said concernedly.
"If you give me the precious, I'll love you forever," Neil said to her.
Neil then touched the ball and quickly became consumed by fire. "It hurts," he cried out.
"I'm sorry," Nia said shocked.
"Turn it off!" Neil said painfully.
"I'm trying. I don't know how," Nia admitted.
Neil then exploded in a fireball disappearing from view. Nia then woke up and saw her mother next to her on the couch. "The ravens are Neil," Nia realized. "You were right. I was afraid. I didn't want to face them because I couldn't face my past. I've felt such self-loathing and disgust for my boy self. Deep down, I knew I was different but I was still a boy. I looked and acted like a boy. People saw me as a boy, even you," Nia said reflectively.
"I wanted to run from these memories. I wanted to forget them forever. Even now, I'm still running but I'm only hurting myself," Nia realized.
"My darling, your authentic self is the greatest gift you can give to yourself, your whole self," Isabel said.
"Suppressing my boyhood has only hurt me and those I care about. It's keeping me back. I need to learn to love myself, all of me," Nia concluded.
Supergirl flew into City Hall before the city council was to meet. "Supergirl, what a pleasant surprise? By the way, my daughter loves your PSAs," the mayor said.
"You may dispense with the pleasantries," Kara said pissed off. "You're voting no on the deal."
"Why in heaven's name would I do that?" the mayor asked surprised.
"I don't have to explain myself. We're going to rework the deal in a way that doesn't even require a vote and no press," Kara said.
"This is a deal we can be proud of. We're improving the community and the lives of everyone in it," the mayor argued. "This deal will inject new money, growth, opportunity. This will employ thousands and add billions to the GDP. That means more property tax revenue, better schools, better infrastructure. You said as much in your Q and A," the mayor pointed out.
"I know I did but...fuck it," Kara struggled, looking away.
"You want me to sacrifice years of research and work to put roofs over the heads of criminals? Fuck that," the mayor rejected.
"We're both blonds. We can come to an alternative arrangement," Kara said as her resolve began to crumble.
"What's really on your mind?" the mayor asked seeing her distress.
Kara sat down. "My sister is passionately against this vote and she'll hate me forever if I don't stop it," she admitted.
The mayor nodded and sat down next to her. "I've had family members excommunicate me for my decisions as mayor. I've lost friends or people I thought were friends. In the end, you have to think about the common good."
"I can't sacrifice...my sister...for the common good," Kara admitted.
"I know how I will vote and I know a lot of people will be pissed off over it. I've accepted that reality. My own teenage kids think I'm a monster. You going to have to decide whether you'll go with your head or your heart," the mayor said to her.
Kara said nothing to that and just walked away.
In the Tower, Kelly practiced her kickboxing routine. The punching bag was somehow kicking her ass. "Getting that aggression out?" Kara mocked.
"I'm not a robot. I do feel anger and passion occasionally," Kelly said defensively. "By the way, your PSA has reached five million views."
Kara advanced on Kelly. "You need to set Alex straight...I mean...shit," Kara said realizing her poor word choice.
"What's on your mind?" Kelly asked going into shrink-mode.
"I will not be blackmailed to fight for or against any political issue. Not in this time or any other time," Kara pointed at her.
"Sounds like you have it all figured it out," Kelly smiled.
Kara turned away from her and then suddenly punched a piece of equipment across the room startling Kelly. "You will stop Alex from making these demands on me," Kara ordered.
"You can't order a partner to do or not do something," Kelly said obviously.
"I beg to differ," Kara said referring to Mon.
"Even you can't control Mon in everything," Kelly said.
"He knows better than to blackmail me," Kara narrowed her eyes at her.
"Is this what this is all about? You don't like being controlled?" Kelly asked. "You don't care about this vote or what happens to this city. You're just passing the time. When you go back to the 31st century, you'll be the Supreme Leader."
"What's to stop Alex from forcing my hand on a galactic scale?" Kara asked.
"We're not there yet," Kelly reminded her.
"Why are you even training anyway?" Kara asked confused.
"I have to master this move. How else can I fight with the rest of you guys?" Kelly said as she punched a punching bag.
Kara's face fell at that. "As Guardian?"
"Yeah," Kelly confirmed.
"That isn't happening," Kara denied. "I let James risk his life because he needed it in his life. You're not the same. I won't have you risk your life out there."
"It's not really your choice," Kelly said.
"I'm making the choice for you," Kara said darkly.
"I'm not intimidated by you, Kara," Kelly stood her ground.
"You should be. I can get rid of you just as easily as I got rid of Maggie," Kara said angrily and then stormed off.
Kara found Orlando still playing basketball and being a general bum. Kara grabbed him by the neck and forced him off the ground against a wall. "This is your fault, asshole. You couldn't just take my deal. You have to fuck it all up," Kara said angrily.
"What...the...fuck?" Orlando gasped.
Kara then cast Orlando to the ground. "You're going to read this speech to the city council and then you're going to take my generous offer for you and your brother. If you continue to refuse me, I'll burn your apartment down the moment you ever get one."
"Okay," Orlando relented.
"Get dressed. You look like shit," Kara ordered, throwing a bag of clothes on him.
At the city council meeting, Supergirl arrived on the scene with Brainiac 5 by her side. Alex and Kelly were also present in the back. "The floor is now open to public comments? Supergirl?" the mayor invited.
Kara went to the podium with everyone watching. Her comments would be broadcasted around the world. "I've made my opinion known on this issue on social media already. Everyone knows where I stand. It would be dishonest and cliche for me to say I've had a change of heart. But...you see...I'm not someone you should look to for a political opinion. I'm...," Kara began and then looked back to Alex and Kelly.
"I'm crazy-as-fuck," Kara admitted. "I have a fucked up moral compass. I often can't tell the difference between right and wrong. I am emotionally...unstable...at times. So, you should take that into account when you listen to what I have to say."
The room was dead silent as Kara left the room. Alex gave Kara stupified look as she left. Orlando then awkwardly stood up. "I'm one of your constituents...I think. I don't think I can actually vote because I'm a convicted felon...but I have some things to say. My name is Orlando Davis. I've spent the last two years at Van Kull Prison and I thought I needed Section 8 housing for myself and my brother. I've lived in Metropolis my whole life. We lost our parents when I was fourteen. I quit school to take care of my little brother. But there isn't a big market for felons and the bills pile up. I made a stupid mistake and I'm paying a price ever since. And the price I need to pay now is to leave Metropolis and make a new start somewhere else," Orlando began.
"In a small town, they won't remember or care about my crimes. I can rent a small house, go to school at the local community college, form community bonds with my neighbors, and work hard. Then, when I've made it, I'll be back," Orlando said. "So, don't deny this city a better quality of life on my account. The world is constantly changing and I need to change with it."
The people gathered gave Orlando and slow clap and then a standing ovation. A disappointed Alex exited the room and confronted Kara in the hall. "You bribed him to say those things," Alex accused.
"What if I did?" Kara shrugged. "I did as you asked."
"It's not enough for you to say you were wrong. You have to actually stop it from happening," Alex said.
"Moving the goalpost, aren't we?" Kara rolled his eyes.
"You'll do whatever I say exactly as I say it or the deal is off," Alex ordered. "And that includes not talking to Kelly without my permission."
"No one orders me to do anything," Kara sneered.
"Then, the deal is off," Alex stared her down.
Kara gave Alex a manic look, fluctuating rapidly between rage and sadness. Their fight suddenly ended as the building became colder. Ice appeared on the walls of the building and began to spread to nearby buildings. Hank, Brainiac 5, and Kelly met up with Kara and Alex as the building was evacuated. "Get Kara and Alex out of the building," Kara requested of Hank.
"Wait, we can help...," Alex protested as she and Kelly were phased out of the building.
"The temperature is dropping quickly," Brainiac 5 warned Kara.
"Where is the source of it?" Kara asked.
"It's here," he said pointing down at the floor.
Kara spun around rapidly and drilled through the floor dropping down to the basement. There, she came face-to-face with Nyxly. The air became visible around her as she froze it. The ice went up Kara's boots. "Miss me?" Nyxly smiled.
"Not really," Kara said honestly.
"I know we didn't end on good terms but I want to thank you and your friends for being so entertaining to me. You see, when I first came to Earth, I was rather bored. But after going through your entire history, it has filled me with such violent thoughts. I'll make you feel that pain you feel in the Fortress. I'll see your greatest hope crumble before your eyes. And, unlike you, I'm a woman of my word," Nyxly said to her.
"Remind me to fire Nia for not dreaming this," Kara said peeved.
"There's nothing wrong with her abilities. In return for giving her mother back for twenty-four hours, she couldn't warn you of this attack," Nyxly smiled.
"I don't blame her. Damn good deal," Kara said sympathetically.
"You can't defeat me. Only magic can defeat magic," Nyxly said to her.
Kara fired heat vision on her. She merely blocked the beam with her hand.
On the roof, Brainiac 5 led a number of civilians. As the building was about to collapse, Brainiac 5 summoned the Vindicator cruiser to appear. "Everyone on the ship," Brainiac 5 told them all.
Hank suddenly phased into the basement and distracted Nyxly with his telepathic abilities. Kara increased the power of her heat vision and blasted Nyxly to pieces. The freezing of the building then stopped.
"It can't be that easy," Hank remarked.
Kara looked everywhere apprehensively. "Regroup," she said finally.
After the battle, Alex and Kelly had a chat. "I don't think you should force Kara's hand. Emotionally blackmailing her isn't the answer," Kelly said.
"It's the only leverage I've got with her," Alex pointed out. "Because of me, she just admitted on global TV she's crazy as fuck and not to be trusted."
"And the press is already calling her brave and courageous for doing so. Look, it's just the wrong thing to do in any family. I've seen so many families break up over politics and religion. Kara has sincere beliefs...occasionally. And even though her heart and mind may be corrupt, she still feels she's doing the right thing. If you want to persuade her, show her by example," Kelly advised.
"Okay," Alex conceded. "I have something I have to get off my chest as well. I don't want you to follow in James' footsteps. I'm done with the DEO and that life. I want us to have a boring peaceful life."
"This last week, I realized that I can't be a superhero overnight. You and James trained for years. Being Guardian isn't my place," Kelly admitted. The two kissed and then walked away holding hands with a better understanding of each other.
Kara eyed Metropolis from the Tower with unease. Nyxly could be anywhere with powers that rivaled her own. "Orlando really made a difference. The city council voted in favor of the plan," Brainiac 5 informed her.
"Why do I care anymore?" Kara asked miserably.
"You strive to command your own fate and the fate of others no matter what time period you are in. The common denominator is always your power," Brainiac 5 said. "The year is irrelevant. What is relevant is your presence."
Kara nodded absorbing that in. "I just admitted on global TV that I'm crazy."
"And yet, Alex would be considered crazy in the 31st century. It's all relative to the time and place you happen to be," Brainiac 5 said. "If it gives you any comfort, all living beings are crazy from my perspective."
Kara smiled at that. "Until the end, I'm going to keep showing up and sharing my thoughts."
"Through it all, I will be beside you," Brainiac 5 promised. "What should be done about Nia?"
"I pardon her. Go to her and comfort her. She has lost her mother for the second time," Kara ordered. As he departed, Kara sighed. "Mr. Mxyzptlk," she requested.
He appeared immediately at her side. "How can I be of service?" he asked smiling.
"I need your help to kill a bitch," Kara requested.
Author's Notes: Issues concerning zoning laws and affordable housing in major cities is complex and can't be explained in this simplistic manner. CW Kara is firmly behind one side as opposed to being a unifying figure and the mayor is demonized unfairly. In this episode, I try to articulate both sides in an irresponsible manner as usual with some family drama. Nia's issue with Maeve was resolved in a previous season so I changed her dream here. CW Nia is responsible for every death and destruction caused by Nxyly from this point on and should be given appropriate judgment as either an idiot or a villain. As usual, CW Super-Friends are often the cause of their own villains.
