Chapter 10
With great difficulty, a few stumbles and a couple of almost falls, Piper and Polly managed to get Alex from the cab, into her apartment and tucked into bed.
Piper removed the brunette's jacket, shoes and jeans, trying to make her more comfortable while Polly brewed fresh coffee.
Alex lay passed out in her bed as Piper and Polly quietly discussed what to do over coffee in the living room.
''So, is heroin withdrawal like a hangover? Do we just leave her water and aspirin?'' Polly asked the blonde as she sipped her coffee, making herself comfortable on the expensive leather couch.
''It's heroin, you can't mix drugs with prescription drugs… Geez, Pol!'' Piper scolded as she gave her friend a disbelieving look.
''How am I supposed to know? The closest I've been to drugs is that one time we smoked a joint in college! This is your area of expertise!'' Polly replied looking innocent.
''My area of expertise? I don't do drugs! How would I know?'' Piper asked with a disgusted look.
''Your girlfriend was a drug dealer… I'm sure you've seen this kind of thing before!'' Polly stated as she sipper her coffee.
''Firstly, she was an importer, not a dealer. Secondly, a successful importer or mule doesn't use the product. So, no… I haven't seen this kind of thing before!'' Piper replied, sounding rehearsed.
''Now I get it… Besides from the money, good looks and the sex, Supercunt had you brainwashed! Makes perfect sense now!'' Polly said with a smug smile.
''Alex didn't have me brainwashed! You know, you forgot to mention one thing… Love. I looked past her job, and I didn't care about the money. I loved Alex, the good looks and the mind-blowing sex was just a bonus!'' Piper replied with a smirk of her own as she sipped her cooling coffee.
''I know you loved her, Pipe. I'm only kidding around. Seriously though, what do we do about Alex? Do we just let her sleep it off? Take her to the hospital? I'm out of my depth here!'' Polly asked, looking genuinely concerned.
''I think we just let her sleep it off and sober up. I'll keep checking on her to make sure she doesn't throw up or something. But you should go home, Pol. I've got it from here.'' Piper explained and ended with a friendly smile.
''I can't leave you here to deal with this alone, Piper!'' Polly protested, looking offended.
''You've already done more than I could have asked for. The worst part is over, all I can do is keep checking on her until she wakes up. You might as well head home and get some sleep.'' Piper said with a reassuring smile.
''Are you sure, Piper? I feel guilty about leaving you here.'' Polly replied, looking uncomfortable.
''Really, it's okay. This used to be my home. One more night here won't kill me. Thank you for everything today!'' Piper said as she leaned over and grabbed the brunette's hand, giving it a gently squeeze.
''Okay, Pipe. You know that I would do anything for you… Even if it involves helping Supercunt!'' Polly replied with a loving smile.
''Thanks, Pol. I love you. You should grab a cab before it gets too late.'' Piper said as she took a mouthful of nearly cold coffee.
''I love you too, you stupid lesbian. Call me in the morning or if anything happens!'' Polly responded as she downed the last of her coffee and placed the mug on the coffee table.
''I promise. Text me and let me know that you got home safe!'' Piper demanded as she walked her best friend towards the door.
''I will. Call me if you need anything. Be careful.'' Polly said as she hugged the blonde and left the apartment.
'Be careful… With what? My heart? That already broke yesterday!' Piper thought to herself as she closed the apartment door.
Piper stood awkwardly for a few moments, wandering around the apartment aimlessly like a lost puppy. The blonde didn't know what to do with herself, she knew she couldn't go to sleep in case something happened to Alex, not that she would have been able to sleep with everything that has happened in the past twenty-four hours. Piper decided to pour another cup of coffee and grab a random book from the bookcase. The blonde sat on the couch fighting an internal battle with herself for a while, until she finally decided that it would be best for Alex's safety if she lay in bed beside her and read the book, not because Piper wanted to be close to her, strictly to supervise the brunette for her own safety. That's what the blonde kept telling herself as she snuggled closer under the covers beside the unconscious older woman.
A few hours had passed, and Alex was still peacefully in a deep sleep beside the blonde. Piper had tried to reread the same page for the last forty minutes with no success, she just couldn't concentrate. The blonde leaned over and quietly placed her book on the bedside table and grabbed her phone instead. Piper wasn't too sure how Alex would feel when she woke up and what she could do to help. The younger woman began googling heroin withdrawal symptoms and how to help with withdrawal.
An hour and a lot of google searches later, the younger woman was more prepared for what to expect. Piper checked on Alex, mostly to make sure she was still breathing. The blonde had fell down a scary google hole and read a few heroin horror stories. When she was content that the brunette was still alive, the younger woman decided to keep herself busy and tidy up. Piper collected the few cups and glasses that were laying around and washed the dishes, she opened all the windows to air out the stale smell of cigarette smoke and sprayed air freshener, then she had a nosy in the fridge for something to make for breakfast in case Alex was hungry when she woke. Disappointed by the contents of the empty fridge, the blonde sent a text to Polly asking her if she could pick up breakfast and drop if off. Just as Piper was debating what she could do to keep herself occupied, she heard noise coming from the bedroom. The blonde ran to the bedroom to find an empty bed with the covers thrown back. Before she could think, she heard violent screams coming from the ensuite bathroom.
Alex was abruptly woken by shooting pains in her stomach, as she opened her eyes a wave of nausea washed over her. The brunette quickly threw off the bed covers and made a dash for the bathroom. As she leaned over the toilet the contents of her stomach emptied into the toilet bowl with a string of violent retching noises. As the vomiting subsided for a few seconds and she caught her breath, the brunette jumped as she felt a warm hand rubbing her back. Alex looked behind her and seen a blurry blonde figure, she reached for her glasses on top of her head, but they weren't there.
''Piper? Fuck! How high am I?'' Alex asked herself out loud as she flushed the toilet.
''Yeah, Al. It's me, Piper.'' The blonde replied as she continued to rub soothing circles on the older woman's back.
''What're you doing here?'' Alex asked confused as she tried to take in her surroundings.
'I knew she wouldn't remember anything that happened! Of course, it was the drugs talking last night. She doesn't love me!' Piper quickly thought to herself.
''Eh, I-We were at the same bar last night and you were fucked up. Fucked up like I've never seen before, Alex! Out of your mind… On fucking heroin! Alone in the stall of a bathroom, you could barely walk. I couldn't leave you like that. Polly and I helped you get home and I stayed to make sure you didn't choke on your own vomit in your sleep!'' Piper explained as she started to get angry at the previous night's events.
''I- Fuck! I'm sorry, Piper! You didn't have to do that. But I appreciate it, thank you… Really!'' Alex replied, feeling guilty and ashamed of her actions, especially after she lied and told her ex-girlfriend that sleeping with her was a mistake and she didn't love her anymore.
''No matter what happened between us, Alex, I'll still always care about you. I couldn't live with myself if I had seen you in that state and walked away. How are you feeling?'' Piper said honestly.
''I- I'm fi…'' Alex began to reply but another wave of nausea came over her and she retched into the toilet.
Piper gently rubbed her ex-girlfriend's back until she was done and handed her a wad of toilet roll. Alex gratefully accepted it and wiped her mouth. The brunette scrunched up the toilet roll and disposed of it by flushing.
''Can I get you a glass of water or anything?'' Piper asked sweetly.
''No! I'm okay, thanks.'' Alex replied abruptly, even the thought of water made her feel queasy. ''I feel a little better… For now. I'm just gonna freshen up.'' Alex explained as she shakily rose to her feet.
''Okay, I'll…'' Piper awkwardly mumbled as she stood up and motioned towards the bedroom before leaving the room.
Alex washed her hands and splashed some cold water on her face. The brunette leaned against the sink for a few moments as she tried to piece together what happened the previous night. The memories came back slowly in a hazy, muddled mess. 'Just like my life.' Alex thought. As the brunette remembered the other blonde woman who had been all over her last night, another wave of sickness came over her. The brunette lunged for the toilet as she began vomiting again.
Fifteen minutes later, Alex was content that there was nothing left in her stomach to throw up and brushed her teeth and washed her face. The older woman debated a shower as she could smell last night's alcohol and other substances oozing from her pores, but she didn't have the strength to stand much longer. The brunette needed to lay down and rest for a while, suddenly she was feeling weak.
For the past nearly thirty minutes, Piper had been awkwardly pacing around the bedroom. When she heard Alex retching after she had left the bathroom, before she knew it her hand had been on the door handle, but she had to force herself not to turn it. 'If she wants me or needs my help, she'll call me.' Piper had to reason with herself. This had caused the blonde to awkwardly pace around the bedroom, patently waiting for her ex-girlfriends call and to make sure she was okay. When the bathroom door swung open nearly thirty minutes later, Piper was relieved, for a split second. Now the younger woman was filled with nervousness, she didn't know how her ex-girlfriend was going to react to her presence. 'Was she waiting for me to leave? Maybe she heard me pacing around and thought that I had already left, and the coast was clear to come out? Should I leave? Is it weird if I stay? Alex didn't want me around before, why would she want me here now? She never was a good patient when she was sick! She's clearly alive and I think the risk of her dying in her sleep is over now. Is there even any reason for me to stay? It's not like she even wants me here! I should go… soon. Just a little while longer. Just to I make sure she's really okay. Besides, I need to wait on Polly to deliver breakfast. Yeah, breakfast… That's a good excuse!' Piper was lost in her thoughts until Alex startled her.
''Pipes?'' Alex called from the bed as she wrapped herself in a blanket cocoon.
''Sorry, what?'' Piper asked as she noticed that the brunette was tucked up in bed, she hadn't even seen her walk past as she was lost in her thoughts.
''Is it cold in here? Are you cold? I can't stop shivering!'' Alex asked as she shook in the bed.
''It's not cold in here, I'm just nice.'' Piper said as she approached the bed and placed a gentle hand on her ex-girlfriend's forehead. ''Al, you're burning up!'' Piper said worriedly.
''Am I?'' Alex asked as she rattled in her cocoon.
''I think your withdrawal is kicking in! I'm gonna get you some water and a cold cloth.'' Piper said as she turned to leave.
''Pipes?'' Alex called after her, making the blonde turn around to face her. ''Please don't leave!'' Alex said in a small, vulnerable voice.
''I'm not going anywhere, Al. I'm just gonna get you a glass of water and a damp cloth to control your fever. I'll be right back!'' Piper explained reassuringly.
''Promise?'' Alex asked softly in her husky voice.
''I promise, Al.'' Piper replied, as she turned to leave the room, she couldn't contain the grin that crossed her face.
'It's just the drugs talking. Don't get your hopes up, Piper. In a few hours she's going to come to her senses and kick you out again.' Piper thought to herself as she filled a glass with ice water and held a cloth under the cold tap. 'I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts!' Piper thought with a smile.
