6 Months Prior to Season 1: Spring 2015
Alan Simmons was a badass agent for the DEO climbing to the rank of the XO. He was a lone-wolf operative often doing missions by himself. He was a former Marine recruited to the DEO years prior. Hank remarked that he was one of the best of the best of the best. He was black, lean, and ruthless. On this particular mission, he was at the Hong Kong military airport. Busting the door open, Al fired his automatic rifle on the airport control tower personnel killing several men. He then quickly assembled a missile launcher from his pack. Once it was ready, the missile pointed out the window of the control tower towards the aircraft down below. Al connected the missile to a satellite as a guidance system and then put on night vision goggles to find his target. A small jet full of Middle Eastern leaders and businessmen sympathetic to terrorists was inside a small jet that had just touched down. Al waited for additional contacts from corrupt Chinese military leaders to arrive on the scene. With all of his targets in the same place, Al fired the missile.
The missile burst through the glass of the control tower and went straight for the plane. As it did, it separated into several missiles hitting the plane in two places and two armored cars nearby, killing all participants. With his mission a success, Al programmed the missile launcher platform to self-destruct and walked out of the control tower like a boss.

A disgruntled fat US Senator entered the DEO office in Metropolis. On the TV were news reports of various world leaders outraged by the airport rocket attack. "I know he goes rogue every so often to do his little side missions, but Al Simmons is the best," Hank said defensively.
"Simmons isn't the problem. You're the one that put it into his head that he's some kind of hero out there killing the bad guys. We made a deal with you that we wouldn't interfere with your operations so long as it didn't go public," the US Senator said.
"Killing fools isn't an exact science. You want it done right, we do it my way," Hank insisted.
"Keeping the DEO secret is a pain in my ass," the US Senator remarked.
"I'm making you a guarantee. All you have to do is make sure certain agencies get off my back and make sure I get all that I have been promised," Hank said standing up.
"This is me you're talking to. If I say you're the man, you're the man," the US Senator backed off. "Just make sure you keep your end of the bargain and you start by getting rid of Agent Simmons."
"He's doing a great job where he is," Hank refused.
"He's a loose cannon. Can't you find someone less redundant to be your XO?" the US Senator asked.
"Like who?" Hank rolled his eyes.
"I don't know. A woman...who's gay or something?" the US Senator suggested.
"I'll look into it," Hank said with false sincerity.
Alex was wearing a business suit as she waited for Al to get ready at his suburban house. "Not again," she said as she read a Daily Planet on the Hong Kong bombing completely oblivious it was the doing of her good friend.
Al's wife then drove out. "Hey, Wanda, do your man a favor and get him a watch," Alex said irritably.
"He's on his way out. Now, do me a favor," Wanda replied.
"What's that?" Alex asked.
"Make sure he's back by dinner tomorrow night," Wanda ordered.
"I'll do my best," Alex shrugged.
"Make sure he's back for dinner tomorrow night, Alex," Wanda pressed and then drove off.
Alex eyed Al's beautiful African American wife a little too long and then snapped out of it as she finished her coffee. Al came out of the house all dressed in black contrasting violently with the sunny day. "Hurry the fuck up. We're going to be late," Alex scolded.
"I have to come into the office in style," Al said defensively wearing a rapper outfit. Al then had a good talk with his dog, Spawn. "Guard the house, guard Wanda," he ordered the small dog.
"Great guard dog," Alex mocked as they entered her car. "Look at this shit," she said handing him a Daily Planet newspaper. "What a fucking mess."
"Sounds like some bad guys got killed. What's wrong with that?" Al asked defensively.
"Some innocent civilians got killed in the crossfire. Another CIA fuck up," Alex said obliviously.
Al gave Alex a frustrated look. "Hey, lighten up. It's not like we're responsible this time," Alex said to him.
"Right," Al muttered.
Alex went through security and entered the DEO parking lot. Arriving at the top floor, Al was summoned to Hank's office. "Simmons, God damn it, the kill zone was supposed to be free of civilians," Hank lectured behind closed doors.
"Unfortunate but a necessary sacrifice," Al said dismissively.
"I'm in the business of killing mother-fuckers, not innocent civilians. If you can't handle it, I'll get someone who will," Hank threatened.
"Like who? Agent Danvers? Please," Al rolled his eyes.
"I will send whoever to wherever I choose. You will follow orders and do your job," Hank told him. "Got a problem with that, agent?" (Never call a former Marine a soldier, WTF, Martin Sheen)
"Yes, I do, Sir, and I want out," Al replied.
"You don't quit us, son. We're not the fucking US postal service. Have you read your profile recently? You're a borderline psychopath. Perfect for government service," Hank said handing him a new mission file. "No guilt, no fear, you're a killing machine."
"You're not wrong," Al agreed.
"You won't be happy doing anything else," Hank told him.
"I've made up my mind. I'm going to join an agency that will let me kill fools without questioning my methods," Al said.
"Nothing I can say to make you change your mind?" Hank asked.
"Nothing," Al shook his head.
"I'll arrange to make your transfer to the CIA right after we run this last operation: North Korean refinery secretly producing biological weapons. It's up to you to take out the plant and carefully destroy all the biological weapon viruses. You'll be working with the CIA on this. Consider it an audition for your new job," Hank said showing him satellite images of the plant on a monitor screen.
Al gave Hank a skeptical look. "Come on, Simmons. This is a top priority," Hank said.
"Let's do it," Al said enthusiastically.
In the middle of the night, Al went around breaking necks and slitting throats as he went around the North Korean refinery. Upon reaching the lab, he noticed two guards already dead. Finding that odd, he went inside the lab and found bombs all over the place. "What the fuck?" he wondered.
The bombs detonated destroying the refinery in an explosion that vaporized All Simmons on the spot. At the CIA office, Hank and the Director eyed the explosion from satellites imagery. "I lost an agent. I expect to be compensated," Hank said dryly.
"Submit a grievance with the President. It's your right," the Director said dismissively.
"Would it do any good?" Hank asked.
"Of course not," the Director scoffed.
As expected, Al Simmons' soul went directly to the eighth circle of hell for sowing discord.
Season 7-Present Day
Kelly brought a cluster of orphan kids for a get-together party at a group home's house. As one would expect, a fat-ass clown was present to give the kids balloon animals and perform magic tricks. There was also a pinata for the kids to whack repeatedly. Unbeknownst to Kelly and Alex was that a heavily burned Al Simmons was present wearing homeless clothes. Upon seeing Kelly, a disoriented Al misidentified her as Wanda giving him a violent flashback. It didn't help that he also saw his old colleague, Alex Danvers, with her.
To Al's dismay and horror, he saw Alex and Kelly kiss away from the rest of the kids. "The fuck?" Al wondered.
A little girl then came up to the hiding Al. "Want some candy?" she asked him.
Upon seeing the situation, Kelly freaked out. "Alex, Alex!" Kelly called for her.
"Wanda," Al reached out for Kelly.
"What's going on? Holy shit," she said of Al. "You okay?" she asked the child.
"Yep," the child said amused.
"What are you doing back here?" Alex asked Al taking out her pistol.
"He looks really fucked up," Kelly said of his severe burns all over his body.
Al crawled away and then limped his way out of the backyard. "Yeah, keep moving, asshole," Alex said escorting him out of the yard and then locking the gate behind him.
Kelly gave Alex a concerned look. "He called me Wanda."
Alex gave nothing away. "Must have had the wrong address."
That night at the DEO, Alex walked in and greeted Hank. On the TV screen was Supergirl justifying DEO operations in Southeast Asia to a skeptical press. Alex glanced at the TV for a moment and then back to Hank. "With Barney's help, we have a new vaccine against the Omicron variant," Hank said pleased.
"Great, Hank. I think Al Simmons crashed one of Kelly's group-home parties," Alex said concernedly.
"That's not possible. Al Simmons died seven years ago in a classified CIA mission to North Korea," Hank recalled.
"Well, what I saw sort of looked like him and he was asking for Wanda. The group-home was also where Wanda used to live in Metropolis," Alex said.
Hank froze at that. "Maybe a shape-shifter."
"I don't think so. He looked like he had been to hell and back," Alex doubted.
"Are you trying to suggest that Agent Simmons went to hell and now he's back?" Hank asked incredulously.
"Or maybe he survived the explosion in North Korea," Alex theorized.
"I find that even more unlikely," Hank scoffed.
"Two of my drones have been disabled," Brainiac 5 reported.
"He is here," Alex pressed.
"The armory has been broken into," Brainiac 5 sensed. "I'm sending drones to investigate."
Kara then entered the DEO. "Alex," she acknowledged as she went to Hank.
"You're doing a great job handling the media. The rumors about the DEO were giving me a real headache," Hank complimented. "Let's have a drink."
"Thank you," Kara smiled. "Lying about our operations...," she said as she toasted Hank. "Has been super-easy, barely an inconvenience."
"I think all this shady business has come back to bite us," Alex said referring to Al.
"I beg your pardon?" Kara asked confused.
"Before you came to the DEO, we had an agent named Al Simmons. He was the best but he went out of control so the CIA and I conspired to get rid of him," Hank explained.
"I remember you telling me something different," Alex scowled.
"So?" Kara wondered.
"He's back from hell apparently," Hank said nonchalantly.
"This is all your fault, Hank," Alex scolded.
"Let's get something straight," Hank said seriously and then start chuckling with Kara. "I run this department however I see fit, and I will do whatever is necessary to keep it that way."
"Within reason," Brainiac 5 caveated.
"Within reason," Hank agreed. "Let's move."
"Where?" Alex asked confused.
"Oh, we have a party with some big shots tonight," Hank said.
"Do you think that's wise with Simmons out and about?" Alex asked.
"This Al Simmons sounds like a badass if he's got Alex all hot and bothered," Kara mocked.
"Al Simmons, like all my other dead DEO agents, is not coming back," Hank said confidently.
At the party, Hank greeted world-leader big-shots with Kara and Alex nearby. "Your Omicron variance test was most impressive. How do you control the delivery of the vaccine?" an African leader asked Hank.
"The latest in nano-technology," Hank replied. "Let me assure you, gentlemen, the vaccine is problem-free. We've already placed several orders with our allies."
"You're becoming quite a powerful man, Mr. Henshaw," the African leader remarked.
"Not at all. I'm just a facilitator," Hank said with false modesty. "My partners are my beneficiaries."
Brainiac 5 came up to Hank. "I have an inventory of the weapons stolen. It's considerable."
"Shit. Let's get out of here," Hank said anxiously.
The ceiling window suddenly exploded as an entity came in, floated down on a red cape, and then gracefully landed. The entity wore a black armored suit, white markings on his chest and face, green eyes, and ammunition belts across his shoulders. This was Spawn. His red cape flowed around Hank as if it were alive and then retreated inside his suit. At the same time, Spawn's suit unnecessarily shot out two chains with claws on the ends at Hank in a threatening manner before retreating back into the suit. Spawn then retreated his mask away revealing his burnt-ass face.
"You," Spawn accused Hank.
"Who the fuck are you?" Hank demanded.
Spawn grabbed Hank by the throat. To his surprise, Hank found himself unable to phase out of Spawn's group. "What's the matter, Hank? You don't recognize your own handiwork? You left me to die in that bio-chemical plant, remember?"
"Simmons," Hank identified.
Spawn forced Hank off his feet. "You sent me to hell, Hank. I'm here to return the favor," he said and then threw him onto a table collapsing it. Spawn then advanced on Alex and grabbed her. "I trusted you."
"Jesus," Alex said stunned upon seeing Al in his armor.
"How could you be with Wanda?" Spawn asked incoherently. "How could you?"
"Al, when you died, Wanda was devastated. You know about your daughter, Siona?" Alex asked.
Spawn simply gave her a confused look. "Look, Wanda left town. That wasn't her. It was Kelly, my Kelly," Alex said to him. Spawn threw Alex aside unsure of himself in this area and then advanced on Hank.
"Time to die, Hank," Spawn said as he aimed his rifle at him.
Red heat vision beams went after Spawn from above lighting tables on fire and vaporizing liquor bottles. Spawn took cover as the red beams followed him. "Nice outfit, asshole," Supergirl said from the second floor.
Spawn fired back at Kara with bullets that actually hurt her. After getting hit a few times, Kara used her super speed to avoid Spawn's automatic fire. She then fired heat vision at Spawn hitting him into the torso. Spawn retreated into the kitchen with gaping holes in his suit. Within seconds, his suit regenerated the wounds. "Damn," Spawn smiled.
"What the fuck is that thing?" Kara asked Hank as all the big-shots fled for the exits.
"It's Simmons," Hank said to her.
"What? That doesn't make any sense," Kara said incredulously.
"Kill him now," Hank said to her.
Kara went towards the stairs when she sensed Spawn was already on the second floor. Using her X-ray vision, she searched for him but found nothing. Spawn suddenly kicked Kara towards the wall dropping in from the third floor. Kara went for a solid kick to the groin only for Spawn's skull belt-buckle to block it. "Really?" Kara rolled her eyes.
Spawn retracted his belt buckle and slammed Kara up against the wall and then the balcony. "Little early for Halloween, don't you think?" Kara mocked.
"Where you're going, every day is Halloween," Spawn grinned.
Kara smirked at the witty retort, cocked her fist back, and punched a hole through his gut. "You don't have the guts," she mocked.
Spawn wrapped his metal chains around Kara keeping her still and then fired his automatic rifle into her torso. Kara's body was shredded from the bullet fire sending her into immediate cardiac arrest. Spawn tossed Kara over the balcony where she slammed onto a table.
"I guess you're right," Spawn smirked.
Spawn then quickly regenerated the hole in his torso. Brainiac 5 drones quickly arrived on the scene and fired accurate shots. Spawn fired back taking down a few drones and then flipped down to the ground floor where he continued shooting. More Brainiac 5 drones entered the building and fired on Spawn. A grenade hit Spawn in the gut blasting him out a window. As he fell from a great height, four chains extended from his suit and hooked onto the building. Slamming against the wall, Spawn morphed his hands so they suctioned onto the outside of the building and started climbing up.
Brainiac 5 drones outside fired on Spawn with an array of different weaponry blasting chunks out of the building. Spawn then used his cape to become invisible. The Brainiac 5 drones focused on the building waiting for Spawn to reappear. When he did so, his injuries had been healed. The Brainiac 5 drones fired on Spawn once more as he climbed around the building to the other side. Eventually, Spawn lost his footing and fell towards the ground. His cape came alive and took him down the street where he disappeared.
Inside the building, Hank used his X-ray vision to find the bullets inside Kara's torso and phased his hand inside her to take them out. "How is this possible? They're not Kryptonite," Alex said alarmed.
Hank tossed a green glowing bullet aide. "This is something else," he sensed as the bullets burned his hand. Brainiac 5 drones gathered around Kara and fired solar flashlights at her to assist with the healing process. Hank took the last bullet out and immediately Kara's body healed itself as the energy pathways reconnect. Kara awoke with a start and noticed her uniform soaked with blood.
"I've never seen you so badly injured before," Alex said to her.
Kara focused on her knee injury and healed that as well. "He's of an entirely different dimension."
Meanwhile, Kelly was busy making a speech on child psychology with Al watching from the second-floor seats like a total creeper. After Kelly was done, Alex rushed her out. "Kelly, we're getting out of the city," Alex ordered her.
"What's going on? Alex?" Kelly demanded as Alex escorted her out of the auditorium.
"I'll explain later," Alex dodged.
"Explain now. We're not going through this again. No secrets," Kelly insisted.
"There was trouble at the reception. Hank was attacked by some kind of hellspawn. I don't want to take any chances. Trust me," Alex said super-seriously.
"Okay," Kelly relented.
In a district of the New York area called Rat City, Hank found Spawn on the top floor of a deserted cathedral. "Missed me, Al?" Hank asked ready to kick ass on his former employee of the month.
"You conspired with the CIA to kill me," Spawn accused.
"Guilty as charged," Hank mocked.
"Give me one good reason why I shouldn't blow your head off?" Spawn asked pointing his rifle at him.
"You've got a unique set of skills. Come back with me to the DEO and I'll make you a Super-Friend," Hank offered.
"What makes you think I want to join your superhero club?" Spawn asked disdainfully as he grabbed a hold of Hank. "You can take your Super-Friends of yours and shove them up your ass."
"You got that black-on-black crime look in your eyes," Hank mocked.
Spawn tossed Hank aside to the ground. "I'm going to cut your ass into fifty pieces and then mail it to every state. I don't have to put up with this shit," Hank said as he got back up. "You're a bigger fool than I thought if you think you can go toe-to-toe with me."
Spawn fired into Hank's shoulder actually managing to injure him. Hank quickly regenerated the wound as the bullet had passed through him. "So, you want it the hard way. No more fucking around. I'm your Vindicator."
Spawn watched stunned as Hank morphed into J'onn. As soon as J'onn finished his transformation, Spawn fired on him. The bullets merely went through him. J'onn rushed Spawn and slammed him against a balcony. J'onn then attempted to mind-rape Spawn but he quickly formed his mask to block it. Spawn then fired into the floor causing it to collapse under them both. The two both hit the ground with J'onn being impaled on an electrical breaker distracting him and making it difficult for him to phase through it. J'onn eventually phased through the ground and disappeared.
Spawn went down the alley with a rifle in hand ready for J'onn to reemerge. Homeless people scrambled to get away as J'onn would appear and disappear. Each time, Spawn spent some of his ammunition firing at him. With Spawn out of bullets, J'onn emerged behind him and slammed him against a wall. Spawn suddenly formed spikes all over his body forcing J'onn to release him. J'onn then punched Spawn up against the metal fence leading to the cathedral impaling him on it. With Spawn effectively pinned, J'onn went back to being Hank.
"Green Martian: 1. Spawn: 0," Hank mocked. "Looks like I fucked you over...again. I could have killed you like that," Hank said snapping his fingers. Hank then went over to Spawn. "You look like shit," he said and then phased his hand inside Spawn's torso, ripped his heart out, and then crushed it. Spawn then hung from the fence looking lifeless.
However, taking out his heart was not enough to kill Spawn. Immediately after Hank left, Spawn came off the fence, regenerated his heart, and stole some punk's motorcycle. He then went after Alex and Kelly at a high rate of speed finally intercepting them. As Spawn was about to get next to them, Alex slammed him with her car against the curb. The two hit repeatedly until Spawn ended up on the other side.
"Wanda!" Spawn called out.
"Why does he think I'm her?" Kelly wondered.
"I don't know. He's delusional," Alex said as she slammed Spawn into some metal fences. Spawn kept going expertly riding alongside them. "Take the wheel," Alex said to Kelly as she took out an M203 rifle and aimed out the window. As Spawn approached, Alex fired every few seconds blasting up the asphalt near Spawn's location.
Spawn responded by using his cape to create an armored shield around himself and his motorcycle. Alex fired a few more grenade rounds at Spawn but the explosions couldn't penetrate the armor. "Well, that's not fair," Alex frowned.
Supergirl suddenly dropped down and blasted the pavement with frost breath. Spawn's motorcycle slipped on the black ice and skidded to a stop. Kara then fired heat vision at Spawn creating a massive explosion that ripped apart his armor. Alex and Kelly kept going to their final destination. Cautiously walking through the fire, Kara looked for Spawn but found nothing.
Midvale
In the middle of the night, Alex brought Kelly over to her parents' house. Jeremiah was on the couch, drinking a beer, and watching Jeopardy as per usual. "Is this one of those visits where you're running away from a supervillain again?" Eliza asked knowingly.
"Something like that," Alex confirmed.
"Hi, Alex," Jeremiah said from the living room ignoring Kelly's presence.
"So, what's this all about?" Eliza asked curiously.
"A former colleague of mine who died seven years ago is back as a hellspawn, and he thinks Kelly is his wife, Wanda," Alex said.
"So, just reunite him with the real Wanda," Eliza said simply.
"After Al Simmons died, we scrubbed her records and put her in witness protection. No one knows where she is," Alex explained.
"Well, that is a pickle," Eliza nodded.
Spawn then kicked the door in and entered the house. "Whatever it is you want, just take it and go," Eliza said to him.
"I intend to," Spawn said referring to Kelly. "Do you have any idea how hard it is to find this place in the dark? It's time like these I'm glad I'm already dead."
Alex took out her pistol but wasn't sure it would do any good. "Back off, hero," Spawn mocked. Alex then turned the pistol on Kelly.
"Holy shit," Kelly said freaked out.
"Trust me. I know what I'm doing," Alex said taking Kelly into the living room.
"Wanda," Spawn said alarmed.
"Don't make me nervous, Al. I might accidentally pull something," Alex threatened.
"You pull that trigger, you die slow," Spawn promised.
"No more fun and games, Al. Either you go back to hell or she dies," Alex told him.
"I will rip your heart out. Let her go," Spawn ordered.
"What's it going to be? Time's running out, Al," Alex asked as she put her pistol on single action.
Spawn got closer to Alex calling her bluff. Alex then shot Kelly in the head. "No!" Spawn shouted as she fell. Even Jeremiah was slightly shocked by Alex's move. Enraged, Spawn kicked Alex into the study room busting down the doors as she went through it.
"I got nothing else to lose," Spawn said angrily as he placed a knee on Alex's back and aimed his right fist at her back. As he did, several blades extended from his wrist. "It's payback time, Alex."
"Simmons, you kill me, you're right back where you started. You're alive now. You can redeem yourself," Alex pleaded with him.
Spawn used his X-ray vision to see her heart through her back. He was just about to slice through her when Kelly slit his throat with a knife. Kelly morphed into Hank and worked to cut off Spawn's head. Spawn resisted with spikes all over his body and threw Hank off of him. At the same time, Jeremiah fired his rifle into Spawn's torso wounding him. Hank morphed into J'onn and fired heat vision cutting Spawn's head off.
"You're going to pay for this," Spawn's head said to them. "It's not over yet."
"Give my regards to your boss," Hank said and then threw the head into the fireplace where it immediately became incinerated. The rest of Spawn's body liquified into black goo.
J'onn then returned to being Hank. "Not bad, old man," Hank said to Jeremiah.
"I'm never going to get used to you wearing his face," Jeremiah remarked referring to the real Hank Henshaw.
"Where's the real Kelly?" Eliza wondered.
"Oh, she's not yet comfortable meeting dad, yet," Alex said sheepishly.
"Fair enough," Jeremiah nodded and then put his rifle away.
Alex then turned to Hank. "I'm quitting this life for good, Hank. You know that, right?"
"I do," Hank nodded and then gave her a parting handshake. Alex was done as a superhero after an impressive service record that ended with an assist on the killing of a Hellspawn.
Author's Notes: This bonus episode is based on the Spawn movie. The comics have had Spawn be as weak as being defeated by Batman to being a literal god, so I went off the movie. Like many examples, it's a rock, paper, scissors confrontation whereby Hank is able to defeat a villain that Kara lost to. For clarification, Alex switched Kelly and Hank out just before arriving in Midvale to fool Spawn. Chronologically, the flashback with Al at the DEO was after the DEO bonus episode but before the Batman V Superman bonus episode in the fic: Midvale, a prequel to AOS.
