Adventures of Supergirl 7x08

Alex looked over the Daily Planet's front-page coverage of an angelic creature murdered in the park by homeless thugs while drinking a cup of coffee. "Well...shit," she muttered.

Alex then noticed Eliza leaving with her suitcase. "Mom, what are you doing?"

"I'm going home," she said flatly.

"What? What are you talking about?" Alex asked outraged.

"I don't feel right," Eliza said vaguely.

"Look, you just got here," Alex pointed out.

"Yeah," Eliza said awkwardly.

"I have to run. We can talk later," Alex said hurriedly. "Okay?"

"I have to go, Alex. I miss my church," Eliza said lamely.

"Mom, this is Metropolis. There must be twenty-thousand churches. Just take your pick," Alex said dismissively as she put on her doctor's lab coat.

"You need to do a better job with Kelly. She's not well," Eliza scolded.

"So stay," Alex shrugged. "Take care of her if you're so concerned. Help me out."

"I'll take her home if you let me," Eliza suggested.

"This is home! Understand! This is where we live. I'm not going back to Midvale. God damn," Alex told her off. "I'm going to work. You do whatever you want."

Alex met up with John Milton and Brainiac 5 on a high floor of an unfinished skyscraper in Metropolis. They were having a meeting with one of John's clients, Robert Parr aka Mr. Incredible. Robert's civilian job was in construction management but few knew he was also Mr. Incredible, one of the strongest superheroes in existence. His entire family was made up of superheroes.

"Look at this. My secret identity is revealed and the press follows me wherever I go," Robert complained. Alex kept her mouth shut as she noticed a Catco camera crew was already present on the ground floor. "They're like insects down there."

"Calm down, Bob, and listen," Brainiac 5 said condescendingly.

"I don't know. Maybe you're right. Maybe she's a whiz kid but Jesus Christ, this is my ass we're talking about here!" Robert said to John.

"Robert, you know how this town works. You got enemies here you haven't heard from. Now with this, now that you're down, I'd get ready for one of those Class-A Metropolis-style pig-fucks. You know it's coming. Now, you're going to have to ask yourself who do you trust," John explained. "Who do you trust, Bob?"

"I don't know. I might have to look around," Robert said uncertainly.

"You don't have time to shop, Mr. Parr. Your heart could give out any second now. This is what I know. You need heart transplant surgery for eating way too much butter," Alex told him.

"How do you know that?" Robert asked spooked.

"I would get in front of this fast," Alex advised.

"So, I put butter on virtually everything I eat. Is that a crime?" Robert asked outraged. "This is a nightmare."

"You need to hear these things," Brainiac 5 said condescendingly.

"Christ, Barney," Robert shook his head dismayed.

"Right now, this moment, you need immediate surgery," Alex said seriously.

"I have a fourteen-year-old daughter who I care about more than anything in this world," Robert said ignoring his obnoxious son.

"She's a winner, Bob," John assured him. "Just like you were."

"I got some shit phone calls I have to make...alright," Robert relented. "You better be as fucking good as what he says you are," he said to Alex.

As soon as he left, Alex stared at John incredulously. "What an asshole," she shook her head.

That night, Alex went to John's office and noticed office workers carrying boxes into a room. Alex curiously went into the room to find Brainiac 5 working with a dozen office workers to shred as many documents as possible. "Don't put any shredded documents in the company trashcan," Brainiac 5 lectured one worker. "All of this has to go," he directed another giving a large bundle of paperwork.

"I thought I was the only one working late," Alex said dryly.

"So did we," Brainiac 5 said nonchalantly.

"Yeah, so good news. I've scheduled Robert Parr's surgery. Looks like he'll be a good candidate for a heart transplant," Alex said.

"What a pleasant surprise," Brainiac 5 said already aware of the situation, and then escorted Alex out of the room.

"Looks like you got your hands full," Alex noted.

"Just a little house cleaning," Brainiac 5 lied. "If anyone should ask, you never saw this."

"How corrupt as fuck," Alex remarked.

John interrupted their conversation with a smile on his face. "Grab your coat, Miss Danvers. The night is young. We're going to the Garden, ring-side," John said flashing two boxing tickets.

"I have to call Kelly," Alex said awkwardly.

"Call her on the way," John pressed.

On the subway, Alex and John were rather close to each other in the full car. "Do you have any idea what the fuck Barney is doing at your firm?" Alex warned him.

"I don't like to micromanage. I find the talent and then I delegate," John said unconcernedly. "Who the hell knows what Barney is up to? I have a lot of fingers in a lot of pies."

"You think you can share sexual innuendos with me because I'm a lesbian?" Alex figured.

"Well, yeah, it keeps things from getting complicated," John smiled.

Alex was about to object but then some gangbangers interrupted them. "Hey, what the fuck are you looking at?" he asked John. John simply ignored him infuriating him further. "What are you? Deaf, you can't hear me?"

"Oh, I hear you just fine," John antagonized.

"Get the fuck out of my car and we'll be fine," he ordered John.

"Why? I didn't know it was your car. I'm having a good time here," John refused.

"John, this is how you get stabbed," Alex warned him.

"I didn't ask you, mother-fucker, I'm telling you, so get the fuck out of my car now," he said showing a knife. "I'll cut your fucking throat."

Alex took a pistol out of her jacket and aimed it at his head. "Oh, shit," he realized.

"Never bring a knife to a gunfight, asshole," Alex said as she went to single action.

The gangbanger and his comrade quickly got out of the car as everyone else kept their distance from Alex. She then put the pistol back in her coat. "Invigorating," John smiled amused.

At the fight, Alex was actually enjoying herself. "You like boxing?" John asked her.

"I used to but then...Supergirl stole all the fun out of it," Alex recalled.

"She sure beat the shit out of that Maggie Sawyer. Aliens and humans are not competitive. It's no fun to bet on," John said. "And he's going down right now," he predicted as the champ gave the challenger a knock-out.

Afterward, John invited Alex to a Latin-American restaurant with a band. Alex suddenly realized she needed to call Kelly to tell her where she had been. "I'm with John, you know, my boss," Alex told her.

Kelly gave her a good chewing out. "You know, you're really pissing me off, Kelly," Alex said unimpressed.

"Are you drinking?" Kelly scolded.

"Yes, I'm having one shot. One shot...after seven weeks," Alex said, still a suffering alcoholic.

"When are you going to be home?" Kelly asked.

"Go to bed, I have no idea," Alex told her and then hung up.

As Alex was talking to Kelly, John expertly danced on the stage. Alex arrived at her table and ended up drinking quite a bit more. John went around the table guessing where everyone was from. He then had a woman go under the table for him like a total boss. Alex eyed the smiling John wondering if she should be cool with this. In the end, she stayed with John late into the night and got totally wasted.

That night, Kelly suddenly awoke on her couch in her nightgown. Sensing something was off, she got up and looked around. "Alex?" When she heard nothing, she went down the hallway and heard a noise in one of the bedrooms. Quickly seizing a knife, Kelly cautiously approached the noise. "Hello? Who is there? I have a knife," she said to the intruder. She finally dashed into one of the bedrooms and found a naked black baby on the floor.

Kelly quickly dropped the knife and went into shrink-mode. "Hey, baby, how did you get here? Are you okay? Where's your mommy?" she asked on the floor to be at the baby's level. "You got no mommy? What do you got there? What are you playing with?"

The baby continued to be coy about it so Kelly looked around the baby only to find that she was playing with bloody dangling female reproductive organs. Kelly backed away stunned and then found herself bleeding at her crotch. At this point, Kelly turned on her watch to send out an alert but no one came since it was a night terror.

Alex came home drunk-as-fuck in the morning and found Kelly traumatized. "Look, Kelly, there's no blood," Alex pointed out her clean nightgown. "It was just a dream."

"Not a dream if it's true," Kelly said freaked out.

"Let's get you undressed and into a nice warm bubble bath," Alex suggested.

"No, I know you. You'll leave me now for sure," Kelly said tearfully.

Alex sat down next to her on the couch only for Kelly to freak out on her. "No, get away from me!"

"Why? What is it now?" Alex asked impatiently.

"They took my ovaries, Alex. Right here!" Kelly said upset.

"Kelly, it was a nightmare. Chill the fuck out. You're supposed to be a shrink, damn it," Alex said unimpressed.

"Alex...I can't have children," Kelly sobbed.

"What? Says who?" Alex demanded.

"I got the results this morning. Non-specific ovarian failure," Kelly said.

"That's ridiculous," Alex doubted. "We have friends that can fix this. There's nothing Barney or Lena can't come up with. This is just a minor setback. Even if it is permanent, we have a spare."

"Did you just hear that?" Kelly asked spooked as she looked out the window.

"Err...no," Alex said flustered.

"You're going to leave me. I know you. Just like Maggie," Kelly said freaking out.

Alex got a phone call interrupting them. "No, Alex, they're monsters. You have to listen to me," Kelly told her.

"I have to take this. It's going to be okay," Alex said and then turned away from her.

Alex took a walk with John downtown. "Just give her whatever she needs," Alex said to Barney and then hung up. "Barney isn't sure. He thinks it might be a hormonal imbalance."

"I'm taking you off the case," John told her.

"What?" Alex thought she misheard. "This case, the Parr case?"

"Do you love this woman?" John asked rhetorically.

"Of course, I do," Alex said defensively.

"Then what are you doing? She's sick. Everyone will understand. I'll understand," John said.

"What about Parr? He has a wife and three kids to provide for," Alex objected.

"We find someone new. You consult. You live to fight another day," John said simply.

"What are you talking about, consult? I can do this," Alex argued.

"It's a disappointment, I know. We all have them. I have them. You use them, embrace them, and then move on," John said walking off.

"Hang on, we have to talk about this," Alex said catching up to him.

"Are you listening to yourself? We have to talk about this. She's your wife. She's sick, she needs you, she's got to come first," John said to her.

"We're not married yet," Alex corrected him.

"Wait a minute, you mean the possibility of leaving this case has never even entered your mind?" John asked amazed.

"You know what scares me? I quit the case, she gets better...and then I hate her for it. I don't want to resent her, John. I have a winner here. I have to nail this fucker down, do it fast, and get it past me. Then, put all of my energy into her," Alex told him.

"I stand corrected," John shrugged. "So, fill me in. Did Parr's wife admit that he ate all that butter?"

"She did to me," Alex confirmed.

"Well...shit," John muttered.

On the subway, Alex looked visibly flustered. "Don't worry about anything else. You need to focus on Parr. Prioritize. Conserve your strength," John advised.

"I can't keep Kelly out of my head," Alex admitted.

"That fact is, you won't know one way or the other until after this case," John said dismissively. "So, don't worry about it."

"I have to save this man!" Alex said determinedly. "He's a family man, a God damn hero."

"You really believe that?" John asked condescendingly.

"Yeah, I do," Alex nodded.

"Got to go with your gut," John shrugged.

"That's your advice?" Alex asked incredulously.

"I'll back you either way," John assured her. "Don't worry if he dies on the operating table. You think I haven't lost before? Alex, we've talked about this, remember? Pressure? Take a big whiff."

Alex nodded and collected herself.

At Metropolis General, Alex worked on Robert with her team around her. John watched from the second-floor window. After a couple of hours of intense surgery, Alex pulled it off and brought Robert back. After the surgery, Robert embraced his wife and kids in his hospital bed as Alex looked on. Once he was good to go, reporters ambushed the entrance to Metropolis General to meet with the Incredibles family.

Alex smiled relieved. She had done it despite the odds and all the bullshit she was going through. She then got a call from her doorman. "Shit," Alex realized and then rushed back to her apartment.

"She didn't look well, doctor. I tried to talk to her but she kept going," the doorman told her as she arrived by cab.

"Where is she?" Alex demanded.

"St. Peter, Paul, and Mary," the doorman pointed out the nearby Catholic Church.

Alex ran over to the church, barged through the church doors, and found Kelly in the front pew covered in a pink blanket. The church was empty giving them alone time. "What happened? Are you okay?" Alex asked alarmed.

"He let himself in. You need to know that," Kelly said embarrassed.

"Who let himself in?" Alex asked getting to business.

"The bath was running. I didn't hear him, I swear," Kelly said vaguely. "And then we talked. We talked for hours."

"Did somebody hurt you?" Alex pressed.

"Yeah, Milton...he fucked me," Kelly admitted. "I know I'm a lesbian but I think I wanted him to. Alex, I just couldn't stop him. I begged him but he just wouldn't stop," she said visibly shaking.

"When?" Alex asked confused.

"Today," Kelly answered. "The whole afternoon. I'm so ashamed."

Alex gave Kelly a pained expression. "Today, he was watching me undergo surgery. He was in the hospital in my presence all afternoon!" Alex said angrily.

"No!" Kelly shook her head horrified.

"Yes! Yes! Yes!" Alex told her off.

"No, Alex, I'm not crazy. You have to believe me," Kelly freaked out. Alex shook her head in disbelief. Kelly then cast off the pink blanket revealing that she was naked with cut marks all over her body.

"Oh, Jesus," Alex said, quickly covering her back up.

"No, he did this to me," Kelly sobbed.

"I'm going to get you help," Alex consoled her.

"I'm not crazy," Kelly insisted.

Alex had Kelly committed at a psychiatric hospital. She was placed on a medical bed strapped down so she couldn't hurt herself. "I know why this is happening. All those people you killed. It's coming back to get us. We don't deserve to live. I can't look at myself in the mirror," Kelly said incoherently as she was taken to her room.

Alex went back to the church not sure what to think. Feeling uncomfortable with her surroundings, she bolted only to run into her father, Jeremiah. "What are you doing here?" Alex snapped at him.

"Looking for you, actually," Jeremiah said calmly.

"I'm in a bit of a hurry. I need to talk to Kelly," Alex told him off.

"Milton's firm is more than just hospitals. You know that, right? He's into arms brokering, chemical weapons and toxic waste, money laundering for the eastern bloc. It goes on and on. Milton is into everything, bank accounts for judges all over South America, huge drug cases, murder, everything," Jeremiah informed her as they crossed several streets and interrupted traffic.

"What the fuck do you want?" Alex shouted at him. "He's a businessman no worse than Kara! Now, stay off my back."

Jeremiah crossed the street to chase after Alex when he was hit by a car hard. He fell to the pavement not moving. "Dad!" Alex shrieked and ran over to him. As she pulled his body over, she saw that he had a massive head wound. He was dead.

At the psychiatric hospital, a despondent Alex walked down the halls and found Eliza and James with Kelly. "Mom...what are you doing here?" she asked unable to bring herself to tell her the truth about Jeremiah.

"I came this morning with your father. I kept calling your cell and got no answer. Your father went to go find you. Did you see him?" Eliza asked.

"No," Alex lied.

"I need to talk to you," Eliza said seriously.

Alex looked at Kelly's deadpan expression and then broke down in grief. "Is something wrong, Alex?" Eliza asked concernedly.

"It's just...I don't know," Alex said collecting herself.

"Let's talk out in the hall," Eliza gestured pulling Alex out into the hallway. "I shouldn't have left but I'll never forgive myself."

"There's nothing you could have done," Alex downplayed.

"It's the Devil's doing," Eliza revealed.

Alex simply stared at her. "The Devil? Oh, this is great, mom," she said incredulously.

"Sweetie, please listen," Eliza beseeched her.

"You're doing this now? Because your timing is superb. After all this time, you pick today? Obviously, I'm not under enough pressure! I don't have enough on my mind!" Alex shouted at her.

"Listen to me! Alex! Behold I send you out as sheep amidst the wolves," Eliza quoted.

Alex stopped and then turned back towards Eliza to see if was truly serious. Meanwhile, James was with Kelly. "Hey, sis, look how beautiful you are," he said handing her a mirror. Kelly smiled, her first expression in hours. She titled the mirror towards her hair and saw James looking back at her. Suddenly, his face morphed giving him jagged fucked-up teeth without a nose.

Kelly immediately freaked out sending the mirror into James' face shattering the glass. Kelly then pushed James out of the room. "Oh, shit," James said as he was being pushed out. Kelly then closed the door and placed a chair on the doorknob to prevent anyone from getting in.

"What happened?" Alex demanded.

"She attacked me," James said bleeding from his face.

"Kelly, open the door," Alex ordered through the glass window of the door. Kelly shook her head, turned away from Alex, and clutched her hair in mental distress. "Kelly, it's okay. Open the door!"

"No!" Kelly shouted back.

"Come on, Kelly. You're a God damn shrink. Open the door!" Alex shouted at her.

Kelly ignored Alex and focused on the broken glass shard on the floor. "Get help!" Alex ordered Eliza as she slammed her body against the door. She turned on her watch to get Kara's attention at the same time. Alex also looked to James to give her a hand but he was mysteriously absent.

Kelly toyed with the glass shard in her hand as Alex repeatedly slammed into the door. Finally, Alex took out her pistol and fired into the window shattering the glass. She placed her arm through the broken window to move the chair away from the door. "Kelly!" Alex shouted at her.

"I love you, Alex," Kelly said and then sliced her neck open with the glass shard.

"Kelly, no!" Alex screamed as she forced the door open.

Alex got to Kelly and saw her lifeless expression on her face as she bled out. "Oh my God, what have you done!" Alex cried as she put pressure on Kelly's throat to stop the blood flow. "Get me a doctor!" she shouted down the hall. "Kara, where the fuck are you?" she asked as she kept pressing her watch.

A nurse then came by without any medical equipment. Eliza gave a horrified look upon seeing Kelly's state. Alex placed pressure on the carotid artery to stop the blood flow while the nurse looked for a pulse. Finding none, she began CPR. Even with the nurse and Alex working together, Kelly bled out and passed on.

Alex wandered the hallways of the psychiatric hospital aimlessly and then found Eliza in the lobby room. Alex had blood on her hands and clothes from trying to save Kelly. "Finish the story," she ordered her.

"When I saw him in the lobby I knew it was him," Eliza shook her head apologetically.

"Say it," Alex demanded.

"And you were so proud to be a surgeon, saving lives all on your own. I didn't have the heart to tell you," Eliza said tearfully.

"Say it!" Alex shouted at her.

"Milton...is the Devil," Eliza concluded. "He's always been there, watching, playing our family like a game."

"I have to go," Alex said taking off.

"No, leave it alone. Stay here with me. Forget about him. We can go home. You'll never have to see him again," Eliza beseeched her as she approached the elevator.

"Go home. I have to go," Alex told her as the elevator doors opened.

"Wait...I love you," Eliza said as the elevator doors closed.

Alex then exited the psychiatric hospital finding Metropolis completely dead and empty. There was zero human activity anywhere in the streets, in the buildings, or in the sky. It was as if she was in an alternate universe. The sun and clouds stopped moving. It was as if time itself had stopped. Alex reloaded her pistol and made her way on foot to her apartment building. Taking the elevator, she entered John's apartment on the top floor.

In front of her was a desk without chairs, towards the back was a large stone mural of ocean waves crashing. To the left was a globe and John's antique record player. To the right were John's fireplace and bar. The apartment was one room without a bed, bathroom, or kitchen. Alex figured it was a room used only for business only. There were two windows with excellent views of Metropolis. Alex swept the room looking for John.

"Your mother was right about one thing, Alex. I have been watching. Couldn't help myself. Watching, waiting, holding my breath," John's voice said from everywhere.

Alex looked for the source of the voice and then saw the stone mural twisting as if it were liquid. "But I'm no puppeteer, Alex. I don't make things happen. It doesn't work like that," John said appearing from behind her. Alex became momentarily distracted by the stone mural that twisted into naked men and women interacting with each other in a dance inside the waves.

"What did you do to Kelly?" Alex demanded.

"Free will...like butterfly wings. Once touched, they never get off the ground. No, I only set the stage," John said as he walked behind his desk. "You pull your own strings."

Alex took out her pistol not buying his bullshit. "What did you do to Kelly?"

"A gun, in here?" John questioned appearing genuinely concerned.

"God damn it, what did you do to my wife!" Alex shouted as she aimed her pistol at him.

John held his hands up in surrender. "Well, on a scale of one to ten, ten being the most depraved act in sexual theater known to man and one being the average Friday night run-through at the Danvers household, I'd say, not to be immodest, Kelly and I got it on at around...seven," John mocked as he counted on his hands.

"Fuck you!" Alex shouted angrily as she fired several times into John's torso.

"Oh, got me, got me!" John mocked as he backed away a few steps. "Yes, wow!"

Alex fired at him two more times to the chest without result. "Oh, yeah! Step up, girl. Come on, that's good!" John mocked. "You have a whole lot of that fury. Yeah, that's the last thing to go. That's the final hiding place."

"Who are you?" Alex questioned slightly spooked by his resilience.

"Who am I? Who are you? Midvale High investigative reporter, Daily Planet intern, Stanford grad student, DEO agent and director, a cardiologist at Metropolis General...or Supergirl's adopted sister and sidekick?" John asked her.

"What are you?" Alex asked, seriously spooked by him.

John casually walked over to his bar having no fear of her. "Oh, I've had so many names."

"Satan," Alex identified.

"Call me Sugar Daddy," he mocked her.

"Kelly knew it. She knew it and you destroyed her," Alex accused.

"You blaming me for Kelly? I hope you're kidding. Kelly Olsen, you could have saved her anytime you liked. All she wanted was love. You were too busy," John accused.

"That's a lie," Alex denied. "You don't know what we had. You don't know anything about it."

"Hey, I'm on your side," John said sympathetically.

"You're a liar!" Alex shouted and then walked towards the exit.

"Alex, there's nothing out there for you. Don't be such a fucking bitch," John antagonized.

Alex stopped her march frustrated she couldn't kill this mother-fucker. "Stop deluding yourself. I told you to take care of your wife. What did I say? The world would understand. Didn't I say that? What did you do?" John asked her.

"You know what scares me? I quit the case, she gets better, and then I hate her for it," John said mimicking her voice. "Remember?" he asked her in his usual voice.

"I know what you did," Alex said turning around. "You set me up."

"Who decided random strangers were more important than those close to you?" John asked.

"It's entrapment. You set me up," Alex accused advancing on him. "You played me! It was a test, your test!"

"You put the Parr family ahead of your own," John continued.

"You brought me in. You put me there," Alex accused.

"I don't do that, Alex. Maybe you should have stepped aside. You didn't think so," John said calmly.

"THIS IS MY CITY! THIS IS MY PLANET! I SAVE PEOPLE! THAT'S MY JOB! THAT'S WHAT I DO!" Alex shouted at him.

"I rest my case," John smirked. "Vanity, it's my favorite sin. Alex, it's so basic. Self-righteousness, the natural opiate. You know, it's not that you didn't care for Kelly. It's just you were a little more involved in someone else, yourself. Since the beginning, you've always felt left out and inadequate compared to your parents and all these superheroes flying around. You've always felt you needed to prove yourself that, despite all of your human limitations, you were the most virtuous and competent. You tried to earn your way to salvation through good works all by yourself."

"You're right," Alex admitted tearfully. "I did it all. I let her go," she said referring to Kelly.

"Oh, don't be too hard on yourself, Alex. You wanted something more, believe me," John said sympathetically.

"I left her behind and kept going," Alex admitted.

"You can't keep punishing yourself like this, Alex. It's awesome how far you have come. I couldn't make it easy. Not for you...or your sister," John said as Kara casually entered the room in a red dress.

"Well, adopted sister to be exact," John smirked.

"Surprised?" Kara smiled. "Don't let him scare you."

"Alex, I've had so many apprentices, so many disappointments. Mistake after mistake and then there's you two," John said.

Alex stared at Kara as she tried to register this betrayal, the likely reason why Kara didn't interfere with Kelly's death. Like John, Kara had been puppeteering her the whole time. "What do you want from me?" Alex asked finally.

"I want you to be yourself. I got to tell you, girl. Guilt is like a ton of fucking bricks. All you have to do is set them down," John told her.

"Alex, I know what you're going through. Come here, just let it go," Kara said giving Alex a hug.

"I can't do that," Alex said resisting Kara's hug.

"Who are you carrying all those bricks for anyway? God? Is that it? God? Well, I'll tell you. Let me give you a little inside information about God. God likes to watch. He's a prankster. Think about it? He gives you instincts. He gives you your sexuality and what does he do? I swear, for his own amusement, his own cosmic gag reel, he sets the rules in opposition. It's the goof of all time. Look but don't touch. Touch...but don't taste. And while you're jumping from one foot to the next, what is he doing? He's laughing his sick fucking ass off. He's a tightass, he's a sadist, he's an absentee landlord! Worship that? Never!" John told her.

"Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven, is that it?" Alex asked skeptically.

"Why not? I've had my nose in the ground since the whole thing began. I've nurtured every sensation you've had. I cared about what you wanted and I never judged you. Why? Because I never rejected you, in spite of all your imperfections. I'm a fan of yours!" John shouted. "I'm a humanist. Maybe the last humanist," he said quickly calming himself down.

"No, fuck you. The 20th century was entirely your doing from War World I, the Spanish Flu, the rise of Nazism, Soviet oppression, World War II, the Holocaust, the Cold War, and everything else," Alex accused. "It's all your fault, all of it!"

"Anyone want a drink?" Kara asked breaking the tension between them. "I'm having a drink."

Alex gave Kara an odd look as she got herself a drink wondering if her Christianity was all just a joke, an act. She half-expected it all to be a ruse where Kara launched a surprise attack on John. She just needed to play out John's game a little longer to give Kara an opening. "This is some pitch. You must want me really bad."

"Well, I want you to be on the Metropolis General board of directors and chief cardiologist," John began. "With your sister."

"Is that it?" Alex asked incredulously.

"No...you're ovulating," John said. "Right now."

Alex felt a chill go through her. "What?"

"Your vanity is justified. Your egg is the key to a new future. Your daughter is going to sit at all tables. She's going to set this whole thing free," John revealed.

"You want a child," Alex said dumbfounded.

"I want a family," John corrected.

"The anti-Christ," Alex figured.

"Whatever," John rolled his eyes.

"But I have to volunteer, right?" Alex asked hoping John wouldn't rape her on the spot.

"Free will...it is a bitch," John agreed. "Alex, I need a family. I need help. I'm busy. I'm ready to work. What do you say, Alex?" John asked her.

"What are you offering?" Alex stalled.

"We negotiating?" John asked incredulously behind his desk.

"Always," Alex pressed.

"Yes!" John shouted impressed.

"What are you offering?" Alex asked again.

"Everything, anything, what do you want? How about bliss for starters? Instant bliss, bliss on tap, guaranteed orgasms no matter who you're with. Bliss any way you want it," John said as the people in the mural started moving again in a sexual dance.

Alex blinked wondering if she was seeing things or drugged. "How about that first line of cocaine, that feeling going into a queer girl's bedroom, familiar?" John asked.

"You'll have to do a little better than that," Alex stalled.

"I know. I'm just getting warmed up. You want more, you deserve more. How about the thing you want the most? Saving the world from imminent peril every time, being the hero of the story every time," John offered.

"I can do that on my own," Alex boasted.

"Not like this. I take the bricks out of the briefcase. Freedom, baby, is never having to say you're sorry. I give you pleasure. No strings. This is revolution, Alex," John said to her.

Kara took Alex aside. "Forget about that asshole. This is about us. You don't know how long I've had to wait for you," she said and then tried to give Alex a kiss. Alex gave her a WTF look and pulled away.

"Cut the shit, why me?" Alex asked John.

"You, my girl, put us into everything. You're the host to the Phoenix Force and the Achilles heel to Supergirl. You will create a new lesbian priesthood. Do you know there are more queers in your generation than any other in all of human history? You're coming out! Guns blazing. The two of you, together, will take down every bigoted law, every restriction, every barrier to marriage. You can give yourself and everyone like you the freedom they deserve," John told her. "How about that?"

"In the Bible, you lose," Alex pointed out.

"Consider the source," John countered. "Besides, we're going to write our own book, this altar, this moment."

"Can you stop talking? God damn," Kara shook her head at him. "Alex, look at me," she said getting close to her. "Just go with it. After he releases us from this dimension, we can abort the fucker, and then we'll get Barney to retcon the timeline. You'll get Kelly back. Jeremiah will be back," she said seriously.

"Just take him out now," Alex whispered.

"He's too strong in this dimension. Just do what he wants and we'll be free," Kara encouraged. Alex gave her an uncertain look, now realizing Kara would not be coming to her rescue. "I'll take the first hit. You won't be alone," Kara said and then dropped her red dress to the floor.

Alex simply stared as Kara was completely nude in front of her. "Look how stunning she looks," John complimented Kara's perfect figure.

"I've wanted you from the moment we met," Kara flattered John and began to kiss him.

Alex looked away feeling uncomfortable with seeing Kara in this way. John then went over to Alex. "Soon, you won't be thinking about Kelly ever again. Just give me what is mine and you'll be free for eternity."

Alex faced John having made her decision. "You're right. It's time," she said finally. John smiled victoriously. "Free will, right?" Alex asked rhetorically. John merely gave her a blank look. Alex then took out her pistol and shot herself to the temple. The bullet went through her skull and out the other side. Alex fell to the floor brain dead.

John stared at her body, blinked, and just stared. Kara faded away and disappeared. John looked over her body to confirm she was dead. "Haven't I done enough?" he muttered softly. Disappointed, John then walked off leaving Alex's body behind.

Author's Notes:

* Craig T. Nelson was in the Devil's Advocate and was the voice actor for Mr. Incredibles. Kind of fucked up in a way as he kills his family in this movie and saves his family in the other.

* Alex denies she's married to Kelly as a matter of fact when she's disappointed in how she's acting but then refers to her as her wife after she's dead. It's not a matter of legality but how she's emotionally feeling at the moment.

* For the last couple of episodes, Kelly and now Alex has been seeing things that may or may not be real. What is or isn't real will be clarified.

* The Devil's pitch may be a mixture of truth and lies. You may or may not agree with everything he says but he's still an asshole and that's the main point here.

*Alex's fault, as I see it, is her feeling of inadequacy and pride that she has to be the one to save the world, to save a patient, and no one else can but her. In contrast, Kara has the opposite problem of being apathetic when she could be doing something. Throughout these seasons, it has been a constant clash between them on this front. The need to save patients makes these several episodes a little more morally ambiguous than the Devil's Advocate. Theologically, Alex never trusted God to solve these issues for her. She always trusted in herself and ended up isolating herself.
