Chapter 78: New Beginnings
Arising early in his Hotel Suite, Nathan was dressed in his new regular uniform looking out over an already very busy Union City, as the entire town was preparing for the infamous Mountie Ball tomorrow evening.
Till then there was much work to do, although he still couldn't shake the strange feeling of last night.
It was as though the entire city had been sped up in order to handle the onslaught of Mounties sure to arrive.
If there had been any doubt before as to the importance of Nathan's newly designated position within the Mounties' hierarchy, that supposition was now entirely laid to rest.
From the point of disembarkation from the Train, every single uniformed man the Chief Inspector and Judge came in contact with, from the lowest rank to the highest rank, came to full attention, giving perfunctory, yet hearty and most respectful salutes to the young man standing before them.
The Superintendents even added handshakes along with heartfelt congratulations, welcoming him into their league.
"Hmph! Looks like the word's gotten out!"
"Bill, can you dial it back? It's just decorum and you know it! It doesn't have anything to do with me. Just the title!"
"I don't know. I've never been treated quite like this! I'm stickin' with you, Chief Inspector!"
"That's great!" and there was Allie's eyeroll clearly reflected in an almost identical version per her Dad.
A sleek black car with the Commissioner's seal was waiting at the hotel entrance, to bring their Chief Inspector to temporary Mountie Headquarters in style.
Promptly at 7 A.M., Nathan and Bill left Nathan's Suite and were led to the Lobby Entrance by the Hotel's Valet, where they were placed into the waiting car by their Chauffeur.
"Guess this is a life you'll be gettin' used to with the Bradfords. Suppose you might as well have it here too!"
"Bill, that's enough!"
"Hey, I'm not complainin'! In fact, I'm lookin' forward to the pamperin' in Montreal. Just didn't know I was gonna get it here too!" grinned the Judge, happy to be getting in the last word.
Nathan looked out the window on their ride from one side to the next, mentally noting all the favorite places he and Allie had enjoyed when he had been stationed there.
"There's the Church we attended, Bill!"
He pointed out several favorite restaurants they had eaten at whenever they had been able to get away from the Mess Hall.
"See that big garden, I brought Allie here to play every chance I got. She loved it so much! They have swings and several slides at the far end. But, of course, Allie's favorite was the sandpile next to the little pond. We fed those fish more times than I can count. And don't even get me started on the geese!"
This big city had been their home for quite some time, and in many ways still felt that it was to a degree.
The people had been good to both Nathan and Allie, but then there was Hope Valley, and that had become home in a way they had never experienced before.
Funny, though, how places you live become a part of you, never to leave.
"I'll have to take you to that little Irish Pub, Bill if we get time. Best Irish food in all of Canada!"
"I'm more concerned about this Breakfast Spread the Commissioner has promised!"
"You and your Breakfast..."
When the car arrived at Headquarters, a team of eight Mounties met the two at the front entrance, lined up in military precision, four on either side of the door with Matthew, the Commissioner's personal assistant standing in between, in front of the main entrance.
Nathan stood erect upon exiting the car, and returned the joint salute, then moved from one side to the other of both lines, as though inspecting, which was now required of him to do as a Senior Officer, while stopping to shake the hand of each man.
"It's an honor, Sir!" was heard time and again.
"The honor's all mine!" returned Nathan with one final salute to the eight.
Then with an exemplary salute to Matthew, Nathan and Bill were personally led directly to Commissioner Anderson and given the total VIP treatment in the process…
Having ridden to the fifth floor via a private elevator, they arrived in the Commissioner's Suite of Offices as the doors opened.
"Welcome!" saluted the Commissioner there to greet his guests personally, followed by a hearty embrace. "I hope you both are hungry and ready for a bountiful Breakfast, Anderson style!"
"The Judge is always ready, where food's involved, Sir!"
The Commissioner chuckled then embraced his old friend.
"Some things never change, do they, Judge? When Nathan let me know you were coming too, I pulled out all the stops!"
"Glad to hear it, Winston! Been lookin' forward to this!"
Needless to say, Breakfast was not in any way a disappointment.
"Just call it our VIP Spread!" chuckled Commissioner Anderson. "Not many people get this, you know!"
"Well, I for one am glad to be one of the chosen!" grinned Bill from ear to ear. "My, this is some Spread!"
Even Nathan was amazed: Eggs any way you could possibly want them; a selection of Bacon, Ham, Sausage, and Peppered Ground Veal as the main course; followed by a variety of Bakery Goods including an assortment of Danish and Muffins, followed by every kind of Fresh Fruit imaginable.
A seldom-used special issue of China had been brought out with the Mountie Emblem at the top and the Mountie Motto engraved with "Maintiens le Droit," meaning "Uphold the Right" across the bottom of each piece.
Coffee, Tea, and an assortment of Fresh Fruit Juices were also ready to be poured into fancy matching China Teacups and Cut Crystal Goblets at a moment's notice.
A large low bouquet of fresh coral flowers held center stage on the table and brightened the otherwise plush but neutral room.
"Gentlemen, please be seated!" instructed the Commissioner. "Let us Pray."
"Dear Father, Please allow us to think with clear minds, keeping them open to your almighty wisdom in the confidential matters we are about to discuss, and particularly in this new path we are embarking on in our Division of Inspection. We give you thanks in advance for keeping us focused! Amen!"
"Amen!" chorused Nathan and Bill in unison.
The men quickly filled their plates as the Military Steward filled their drinks.
As soon as the Steward left, the Commissioner began in earnest.
"Nathan, I apologize for pushing you so hard before, on selecting an Assistant. After reviewing your interviews, I could see we totally missed the mark with our selection of potential candidates. Each of the group I have here today is much more experienced, and has a desire, as well as capacity, for this type of forward-thinking, and innovative job. I believe you'll find a much better selection to choose from. So much so, that I've gotten approval for two full-time assistants in addition to your team. You can rank them initially or hire them as equals and divide up their job descriptions as you see fit!"
"Thank you, Sir! Do you think those not selected from this group would be interested in being part of our team?"
"Absolutely, I should have mentioned that as part of the screening process. These unsolved cases are growing by leaps and bounds, and we've already proven throwing more people out into the field unsupervised is not the answer! I believe you may have your team of twelve in these men, and if it takes all of them, so be it!"
"I appreciate that, Sir! I just want us to hit the ground running when I return from my Honeymoon, leaving no case unturned. I won't rest till we have the majority of these cold cases resolved, Sir!"
"Of course. Smart thinking and I love your commitment. Music to my ears that is! I'm afraid my last faux pas has cost us time we didn't have, but I appreciate you speaking up and refusing to settle. All these new men have agreed to go back and forth from Hope Valley to Montreal, as well! In fact, they're quite excited about the prospect. So, I'm pleased to say there is a much higher level of commitment embodied in this group."
"That all sounds promising, Sir. I appreciate the revamp!"
"And don't forget, you may need there to be travel involved as well within the team! These people are ready to do that as well, at a moment's notice!"
"Of course, Sir! I can already tell there will absolutely be times travel is necessary."
"I also want to personally apologize to you, Bill. Your Serge was never officially requested. I want you to know I was appalled when I heard what you were instructed to do. Not only to return your beloved Serge but to do it in person was preposterous! Turns out, it was some hair-brained idea of a lowly clerk here in Union City, as a way to save money! The poor chap had no idea these uniforms are worn and regularly replaced anyway. He has been reprimanded for taking an unapproved initiative, and please accept my most sincere apologies. You will be compensated for your trip to and from Union City, as well as your time, and you will also be issued a replacement uniform, just in case there's a future need!" winked the Commissioner. "But as you know, our reimbursement wheels grind slowly! Just be patient. I assure you it's coming!"
"Thanks, Winston! I can't tell you how much that uniform means to me!" agreed Bill. "Hate to admit it, but I felt totally lost without it!"
"I think I might have an idea. Just let them try to come after mine! They won't win on that one either!"
The two men chuckled as Nathan smiled.
"You got that, Nathan? Don't even think of coming for my uniforms when the time comes for retirement!"
"No, Sir! Wouldn't think of it, much less dare!"
"I also thought you two should know, that your Case with the Syndicate, has had a Judge seated to oversee the case here in Union City. It's great news for us against the Syndicate members, as without doubt, they will be put away forever. But probably not such great news given your relationship to that Bouchard character."
"Who is the Judge, Winston?"
"Judge Riley Jameson, Bill."
Bill moaned.
"Nathan, that's not good news at all for Bouchard!"
"Maybe not, Bill; but I have known Judge Jameson to come up with some rather innovative sentences in extenuating circumstances," noted Nathan. "Perhaps this will be one of those situations. You never know."
"You might want to have his Barrister play up that very fact bigtime, suggested Commissioner Anderson."
"That would be Millicent Bradford, Winston," explained Bill. "Nathan's Fiancee."
"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't know! Well from what I hear, he's in good hands, then. But she will most certainly have her work cut out for her, as will you two, as I'm assuming you will also be involved?"
"Yes, Sir, we plan to be character witnesses on behalf of Mr. Bouchard," explained Nathan.
"Just don't let them trip you up, because of the other gang members. Maybe try to get their cases tried first, Bill?"
"Yes, that would be ideal. I'll see what I can do, Winston."
"Nathan, I hope you don't mind me asking a personal question. Has your Fiancee been able to rearrange her schedule to attend our Ball?"
"No, Sir! It was just too much to ask," explained Nathan ruefully. "She has her Law Practice and many Foundations to restructure in addition to all the Wedding Planning! So, she's on a very tight schedule."
But then he smiled and added.
"It appears I will be free to be at Mrs. Anderson's disposal once again."
"Good man! Caroline is most certainly looking forward to it! But we are both sorry your soon-to-be wife won't be able to attend. We were both looking forward to meeting her prior to the Wedding! From what we've seen, she would have doubtless been the Belle of the Mountie Ball!"
"That she would be, Sir! She's quite extraordinary, as well as remarkable!"
"I can vouch for that!" interjected Bill. "No one more gorgeous either!"
That comment earned the Judge a futile look from Nathan.
"I would expect nothing less as to your choice of partner," smiled the Commissioner. "For all of it! Are you ready to interview this new group of men for your new team positions, Son?" asked the Commissioner.
"Yes, Sir! I am."
"Know going in, these are my best men to offer. I should have done my due diligence more thoroughly before, instead of leaving it to others. But I do believe you will be highly impressed with this group!"
"Sir, I'm sure I will be. I will of course make all final decisions, but I would like to ask permission to utilize Judge Avery to sit in on the interviews. He's a seasoned Inspector and Judge and might catch things I wouldn't look for and vice versa. Two heads and two past experiences being infinitely better than one, Sir!"
"A grand idea! Then after you make your final decisions, then I'll sit in with you and your team for a briefing of sorts tomorrow morning!"
"Excellent! But Sir, I also brought the three top cases for us to review, as you requested. Although painfully, Sir, there is quite a bit of basic information missing in all three cases and that makes valid reviews currently impossible!"
"What basic information?"
"This, Sir, for starters!"
Nathan pulled out the sheaf of forms with missing information and handed them to Commissioner Anderson.
"Are you kidding me? What are they doing out there? Write these up or get it fixed however you like, but this is not to be tolerated!"
"No, Sir, I assure you it won't be. Given this, and that it is repeated throughout numerous cases, I believe we're going to have to retrain everyone, Sir, as quickly as possible!"
"That doesn't really surprise me! But I am feeling guilty about the state of affairs we are leaving you with as a starting point. Put in a request for across-the-board re-training and I'll sign it as a priority when you begin your work with your new team full time!"
"Thank you, Sir! Consider it done!"
"As soon as we finish our Breakfast here, Matthew will take you to your Suite of Offices, where you'll be able to conduct the interviews in total privacy! Good grief, with sloppy work like this, no wonder cases aren't being solved…"
After a long morning of interviewing, Nathan and Bill both sat back in their chairs, with Bill going so far as to prop his feet up on the Conference Table.
Together they reviewed any points of concern.
"Overall, that went about as well as could be expected!" summarized Nathan. "Ready for lunch, Bill?"
"I'll say. How about that Irish Pub you mentioned?"
"Let's go! Lunch is their busiest time, but I think I can get us in. The owner Sean is a personal friend. A good man…"
"Constable Grant! Welcome!"
"Sean, great to see you! This is my friend Judge Avery from Hope Valley, and this is his first time here. He's also a chef, so let's show him what you've got!"
"Cinnte beidh!"
"That means 'sure will!'" translated Nathan.
The restaurant was crowded, but Sean had saved the best seats in the house for special guests, which definitely included Nathan.
"I said Constable, but this uniform is much too fancy for that! What in the world have you been promoted to, Lad?" asked Sean as he seated his guests.
"A new position, called Chief Inspector!"
"Has a nice ring to it, and sounds mighty important, I might add! The uniform looks it too! Do you Lads want to order from the menus? Or do you trust me?"
"Implicitly, Sean. Bring on your best!"
"You've got it!" smiled Sean, as he turned to order their food. "We'll do a series of small plates so you can taste the best of what we offer!"
There was silence at the table after Nathan and Bill seated themselves.
Bill accepted a pint of a nice Guinness offered, while Nathan declined and requested Iced Tea.
"Nathan, what's wrong?"
"Am I that obvious?"
"Not to everyone, but hey, I'm your closest friend plus you're like a son to me! So yes, I notice."
"And nothing gets past you, does it?"
"Not much!"
"Truthfully, I'm not sure what I'm feeling. But I do know I'm missing lunch with Millicent, and I also know that's silly because we'll be together forever in another few weeks!"
"Not silly at all. Yep, this trip is definitely crampin' our style! I've grown to love those lunches with our Girl!"
"Bill, you act like it's your lunches we're giving up!"
"It is, Nathan, or might as well be! Hey, I miss her too!"
Nathan smiled weakly.
"I know you do!" he admitted.
Butinsky or not, you had to love Bill!
He meant well, and there was no doubt, that he did love Millicent!
"Hey, you're not havin' cold feet, are you?"
"Not a chance, Bill! Just missing her something horrible! Perhaps I've held everything back, with Allie missing her so terribly, and now that Allie's not here, I think my own feelings are just overwhelming me. I never realized how much I was holding back! Maybe I should have talked Mil into coming. It just feels so strange for her not to be here with me. And I suppose I didn't expect that at all!"
"Is it bothering you more because Elizabeth and Charles will be here together?"
"No, that doesn't have anything to do with it, Bill! In fact, I hadn't even thought of that."
"You know having seen you and Millicent together, there's no doubt in my mind, that you made the only possible choice. The right decision!"
"No doubt in my mind either, Bill! Once I realized it was Millicent and had always been her, there never has been any doubt whatsoever. Not a bit! I honestly don't know who needs her worse, Allie or me? And I've always thought of myself as being rather independent, and you know how independent that girl of mine is!"
"You all three are as independent as they come if you must know! But you two, you three even, are meant to be. You're everything a family should be. And that's even without the marriage. Call her tonight, Nathan!"
"I plan to do just that! What did you think about the interviews?" asked Nathan, trying to change the subject.
"More importantly, what did you think?"
"If I had to rank them based on this morning, Theodore Tillson is number 1 overall, Andrew Blayne is number 2 due to experience, Leonard Russell is number 3 because of his combined experience and education, Claude Hamblin is number 4 by sheer grit, Martin Sandler is number 5 because he's by the book, and Will Maynard is number 6 because I'm not sure of his ability to self-start. What did you think?"
"All the same. Except I had 3 and 4 reversed. Sheer grit counts for a lot in my book! Especially for starting over which is what you and your team are about to do. I'm worried Leonard might be too rigid based on his education because an investigator has to think on his feet, and always outside of the box. He might reside smack in the center of that proverbial box. But hey, I could be wrong! It's been known to happen! Though rarely, I might add!"
"Oh, of course, rarely! No, those are all good points!" conceded Nathan. "Leonard's definitely an inside-the-box guy. Do you think that's something that can be unlearned?"
"With the right instructor, yes. And since that instructor will be you, I know so!"
Sean cleared his throat, before announcing their courses.
"Gentlemen, as I said, we're offering a series of small plates today, and we're starting with Traditional Beer Fried Fish and Chips, served with Mushy Peas and Tarragon! Enjoy. You'll have another plate soon!" explained Sean.
"Bill, would you like to pray?"
"Sure, Nathan! Can't let this get cold."
"Dear Father, we thank you for this special meal we're about to receive, and we ask that it nourish our bodies in order to make the very best decisions we can make today and tomorrow in these important processes before us! And please let Millicent know we're both missin' her somethin' awful! Amen!"
"Amen!"
"Here, sprinkle that with Malt, Bill!"
"Are you serious?"
"Just taste!"
Bill took one bite and moaned.
"Give me some more of that stuff! This is heaven on a plate!"
"Told you! But there's lots more, as these are small plates, so we'd better hurry or we'll never make it back to the office for our one o'clock interviews!"
"Who would have thunk squashed Mushy Peas could be so good?"
Nathan smiled at his friend's utter delight. This had been a good choice for lunch. And was a spot Nathan felt comfortable in, which for some odd reason, was more important to him today than most.
He didn't know why, but he simply couldn't shake this feeling of being lost, and he didn't even know what else!
"Next, Lads, we have Traditional Sausages baked with Creamy Potatoes and Sweet Roasted Cherry Tomatoes! A kiss direct from the Irish gods! Enjoy!"
"What?"
"Just try it, Bill! You'll love it!"
Nathan watched as Bill's eyes shot up.
"See, I told you!"
"What in the world have they done to these Sausages?"
"They're slow-roasted over a low fire and couldn't possibly be better, Bill!"
"You can say that again. These melt in your mouth. And these are the creamiest Potatoes I've ever had, Nathan! The sweetness of those Cherry Tomatoes pulls it all together perfectly! I've gotta figure out how to make this! Why this is a dish for the Cafe!"
Bill, even for him, finished his plate in record time, and was totally ready for either seconds or the next plate immediately!
Sean did not disappoint!
"Next, Lads, is a spot of our famous Shepherd's Pie. You'll be begging for more, I can assure you of that! We make it with a mix of Minced Lamb and the best Minced Filet out there to say nothing of the heavily Roasted Garlic Mashers! Enjoy!"
"Oh, my goodness! I could just drown myself in this if there were enough to do so!"
"That's why there are small portions, Bill. This meal could get dangerous! We're talking major calories here even with the small portions!"
The two men could barely speak, as they inhaled the plates before them.
"Next is our Traditional Bangers with Caramelized Onions smothered in Sriracha Sauce!"
"Oh my goodness! Does this just keep getting better," asked Bill.
"Afraid so, Judge! Let me know if you want recipes!" offered Sean, content to see his customers so thoroughly enjoying his food.
"Do I ever! One of each and anything else you've got too!"
Sean chuckled.
"Let me see what I can do!"
"Nathan, cheer up! You have the most beautiful woman in all of Canada waiting to marry you!"
"When you put it that way! And yes she is! I don't know how I got so lucky, Bill!"
"So blessed you mean!"
"Absolutely blessed! She's my everything. My Soul-mate, and I wasn't even sure I believed in those. I couldn't possibly be more blessed!"
"I agree with you on that one!"
"But I won't deny this separation has been hard!"
"Are you full, Lads," chuckled Sean as their empty plates were removed, and he sat down a huge round tray of miniature desserts.
"Here we have bites of Hot Apple Crumble Ala Mode, Peach Melba, Brownie Fudgies, and an Assortment of Traditional Irish Whisky Chocolates and Cookies! Enjoy. Have your drinks been taken care of?"
"More than enough, Sean!" admitted Nathan.
"What are you talkin' about? You've been drinkin' tea! I'm the one with the Guinness!"
"You're okay, Bill. I've only allowed you one long one. I need you sharp for this afternoon's questions!"
"Well, thank goodness for that! When did you switch me to tea?"
"After the first drink! You were so captivated by the food, you didn't even notice!"
"Very funny! We've got to come back here when we're not workin'. This Guinness is somethin' else..."
Back at Headquarters, additional interviews went on all afternoon, and late into the evening.
Nathan's questions were subtle and open-ended but shot right to the heart of the matter at hand.
In his gentle way, he got the applicants to confide in him and open up much more than the sharp-fired technique of the Judge, which intentionally tended to throw the applicants off-guard!
But the balance between the two styles uncovered a lot of hidden potential issues that hadn't even been considered before.
Finally, at Six P.M., Nathan dismissed all the applicants and told them he would be letting them all know his decisions by 9 A.M. the next morning.
As the applicants saluted, then filed out of the Conference Room, Bill noticed Nathan looked worn and extremely tired.
"Hey, are you okay?"
"Yes, this afternoon's interviews, if anything, were stronger than this morning's set of interviews."
"Agree. I can't help but wonder if the time of day has something to do with that, though."
"I suppose it's possible, Bill!"
"What do you think? Let's reorder them."
"Number 1 is definitely a tie between Theodore Tilson and Patrick Maynes!"
"Agree! Congratulations, you have your two assistants!"
"I do, don't I? And I think the work dynamic will be great among the three of us!"
"Yes, just don't forget, you are their boss. They will be there to assist you! Are you comfortable with that? Especially with these two?"
"Yes, I am! Based on their responses, I trust them implicitly."
"Okay, who's next?"
"I don't think it matters!"
"What do you mean, it doesn't matter?" asked Bill, nonplussed. "Of course, it matters!"
"If the Commissioner agrees, I think we have our team of twelve. The workload demands it, Bill. Split us in half and we will be just spinning our wheels."
"Agree, but do you think Winston will go for all twelve?"
"I think so! If we can accommodate them at both sites, I've got the workload for them. Think of it this way. There are currently eleven provinces and territories. Take away the two as my assistants, that only leaves a team of ten, meaning one per area, with the two smaller ones combined. And don't forget the training component that's expected to be developed along with the actual training and re-training. We're putting together our own curriculum, Bill! That's no small task! Two of the applicants are also very strong in the area of procedural development, and I would like that to be their primary focus, along with the lesser caseload areas. And Bill, don't forget the number of cold cases per area is staggering!"
"I think you're right on target! Let's call it a day, and get back to our hotel! You've got another early 7 A.M. with Winston in the morning and I don't know about you, but I'm lookin' forward to a second VIP Breakfast! And then tomorrow night there's the Ball!"
Nathan could feel a headache coming on, as his hands flew to his temples.
For some reason, the Ball was the last thing he wanted to hear about.
"Bill, please don't remind me..."
Nathan spent most of the evening trying to reach Millicent but to no avail.
"Did you find her?" asked Bill, peeking his head through the door to their living area.
"No, even Essie and Hendrix seem to not know where she is. I suppose all those last-minute Wedding details have enveloped her. Or she could even be at the Ranch overseeing things there! She's not answering at the office, either!"
"Do you feel good about today?"
"Professionally? Yes, I feel great about today. They're a worthy team for what I want to accomplish! But I am concerned about housing them all in Hope Valley. And to be honest, I was thinking of having a staff of maybe six, not twelve!"
"Housing's coming along. I think we can handle it! Even if Lee has to build a couple of barrack-style lodges!"
"I guess that could work!"
"You're takin' on a lot, Nathan! I don't think you totally realize how much! It's gonna take a significant staff to make it all happen!"
"I know. Think about how involved things get in our little town, alone!"
"Isn't that the truth? Hey, you look beat! Why don't we order our meal in tonight? And you get to bed early!"
"If you're sure you don't mind, I'll take you up on that! I'd prefer to be close to the phone just in case I can get through to Millicent, too!"
"That's what I figured. And I've got a weird court case to review! So a night in, it is! I'll call for a couple of menus to be sent up from the Dining Room."
"Thanks, Bill! I think I'll take my bath and get changed for bed while you do that!"
"Sure, Nathan! Take your time..."
Nathan ran his bath and started undressing to get in the hot tub.
He was overly tense, a bit from the arduous task of today, still trying to wrap his head around leading a staff of twelve! But even more so because he hadn't spoken to Millicent. Nor Allie.
He would try both again, after his bath...
"Nathan, you've barely eaten!"
"Hm? Oh, sorry, Bill! Just not very hungry! If you don't mind, I think I'll try Allie, again!"
"Of course!"
"Operator, would you please place a call to the Wiesses of Hope Valley?"
Bill watched, concerned. He couldn't remember when Nathan had been so down. Come to think of it, yes, he could!
It was when he had been shot.
But even Bill had to admit, the man had a lot weighing on his shoulders.
"Well, that's a no-go. Mrs. Weiss says Allie and Opal are at school practicing a song for Sunday's Youth Choir!"
"Try Millicent again!"
"That's what I'm doing, now!"
Nathan waited till Essie's voice came over the line.
"Essie, it's Nathan! Has Millicent made it back home?"
"Nathan, so good to hear your voice, Son! But, I'm afraid not! She's going to be so upset that she's missed you! I'm just so sorry!"
"No, Essie, I'm sure she's very busy. Just give her my love before she goes to sleep!"
"Of course, I will! Always! And don't you forget for one minute that you have her love in its entirety! Do you hear me? Not for a second do you forget that!"
"Yes, Dear Essie, loud and clear! Thank you, because I needed that! Just missing her terribly. But it won't be long, now! Love you, Essie. Talk soon!"
"Love you too, Son!"
Nathan hung up the earpiece, but his sad face told the story.
"No, go?"
"No, I think I'll go on to bed, if you don't mind, Bill!"
"See you in the morning! But Nathan, you accomplished an awful lot today! Don't forget that!"
Nathan nodded, as he quickly closed the door to his room, leaving Bill more worried than before...
In his private quarters, Nathan took out the bottle of Millicent's scent and her silk scarf she had left him, thankful he hadn't left them at home.
He sat her perfume bottle on his nightstand and pulled the stopper, closing his eyes and taking in the full scent.
Clutching the silk piece tightly in his hand, he laid down under the covers, laying it across his pillow, allowing her open scent to waft over him.
Was it melancholia, or was it just the intense pain of missing her?
Things were falling into place with his job.
And he was thankful for that.
But why had today been so hard?
And why was his body aching inside?
He was experiencing a feeling so profound, so intense, it was as though half of him was missing.
And then it dawned on him.
It was the same horrible feeling he had felt after the loss of Colleen, his twin.
Millicent had somehow magically filled that emptiness as much as she could, and they had gotten through the grief together.
But now he had neither Colleen nor the Love of his life!
He couldn't fight these feelings of loss anymore; he simply had to give into them, latching on to the semblance of what he had.
'Just keep her safe, Dear God! That's all I ask!'
Now if he could just close his eyes and dream of Millicent, wherever she might be...
The next morning during a second VIP Breakfast to Bill's delight, the Commissioner handily approved the team of twelve.
In fact, he rabidly supported Nathan's decisions for his new team.
"I actually have to commend you on your choices of Assistants, Nathan. You chose the two I would have. They are exemplary and will serve you and the program well. I have no doubt so with your leadership!"
"Thank you, Sir! We will do you proud. I will see to it. You have my word!"
"I'm sure you will. I have no doubts whatsoever! We'll also see that there is adequate work space as well as living space in both places! In fact, we have purchased the vast corner lot in Hope Valley and our architects have rendered several drawings for your review. But of course, you have the final say. If you have a different vision, the architects will start over to your specifications. Mr. Coulter has agreed to oversee the building of whatever you come up with in Hope Valley."
"I appreciate that, Sir. I've drawn up several plans as well, that I would like you to see, too!"
"Great, we'll meet with the architects this afternoon. Are you ready to designate your team now?"
"Yes, Sir, I am. Would you like to attend the Assignment Conference? We meet in an hour."
"If you are comfortable with that, I would love to..."
"Gentlemen! Attention!"
A salute was given and returned both with the highest degree of respect and with military precision.
"At Ease!"
But as they were seated, the twelve men were shocked to not only see their new commanding officer, the Chief Inspector but the Commissioner, himself, standing in front of them.
Even more shocking, he sat down at the long conference table with the men, across from the Judge, while the Chief Inspector stood remaining at the head of the table.
"The team we have assembled here is our new Team of Core Inspectors. Congratulations, men! Together, we will be forging a new path of support for our Field Force of Inspectors, and I don't say that lightly. Make no mistake we are here to serve our Team of Field Inspectors, as well as ultimately our own Commissioner Anderson. Each of you will make up a twelve-person team to serve under my immediate direction. Corps Sargents Major Patrick Maynes and Theodore Tilson! You will now function as my two Personal Assistants, never to leave my side during our work day."
Then he addressed his entire team again.
"Our overall goal will be twofold, first to resolve critical cold cases, as well as to develop an overall, inclusive curriculum required of all Field Inspectors, current and future. We will focus on re-training first, as well as assisting in current difficult cases, and overseeing the management of all Inspector Cases. Eventually, we will also be training all Inspector Recruits. We currently have eleven Provinces and Territories that will be divided according to caseload, and there will be flexibility over who is responsible for what depending on current need. We will get into specific assignments based on distribution by myself and my assistants. Each person will spend the next month studying a pre-assigned curriculum portion that will be updated as we each go back through it while focusing on learning everything possible about your assigned area (ie standard operating procedures, and province or territory as well as caseload). You are responsible for finding weak areas as well as stronger areas that need to be hyper-developed both in the curriculum and in the real world. You are also responsible for identifying missing pieces in the field inspections that have already been completed. Assignments have been made and are in the folders placed in front of you. Are there any questions?"
It was a rhetorical question, as even Nathan knew no questions would be asked with the Commissioner sitting among them.
"If not, I defer to Commissioner Anderson!"
"Thank you, Chief Inspector. This honorable man, your Chief Inspector, standing before you is here because of an exemplary and outstanding record in service including teaching, tracking, and overall investigating. You are honored to work with him and under him. He has chosen you because of your own high level of commitment to the betterment of our force. The support you give me unquestionably is now also to be given unequivocally to him in the exact same manner, without question. He is your Superior Officer, your Commanding Officer, and in turn, the Chief Inspector answers only and directly to me. Are we clear?"
A resounding chorus of "Yes, Sir!" in unison rang out loud and clear.
Nathan took charge again.
"As there are no other questions, till we meet again! Gentlemen, you are dismissed till further notice."
Formal Salutes were given by each and every man, as they left the room single file, thrilled to be working for their new Commanding Officer, whose sterling reputation was known to all...
After a long day of business plans being resolved and put to rest, for the time being, it was finally time for the Mountie Ball!
Nathan stood in his Suite, looking out over the City he loved.
He was still feeling off, fighting to not feel morose, but awfully close.
He still hadn't been able to reach Millicent or Allie.
"Oh, Millicent," he spoke aloud. "My 'Passionate One!'
Love of my life,
Light of my morning –
Arise, brightly dawning,
For you are my sun.
Give me of heaven
Both manna and leaven –
Desirous Presence,
Passionate One. (*68)
He had scribbled the words earlier this morning, unable to sleep, and still very much troubled.
Nathan sighed heavily and turned from the window to put on his Officer's Dress Serge, medals included.
Making sure everything was in precise order was no easy task, not with this Dress Uniform!
He was due to arrive within the hour to assist the Commissioner in a final review of perusing the Ballroom together before the Ball actually began.
Their afternoon meeting with the architects had gone very well. They had ended up using Nathan's preferred personal design and tweaking it with a few refinements that would streamline their working process. Individual offices would be added for each team member, with a suite for the Chief Inspector to include offices for his personal assistants, along with a huge Conference Room.
State of the Art Adult Classrooms were also tweaked using the latest fixtures conducive to learning and made even more comfortable based upon the various Field Components that were required.
After much back and forth, Nathan was very proud of what they had refined and was looking forward to the impressive building being built in Hope Valley, which would include a fountain and park-like area with benches to give back to the people of the town they were invading.
Overall, it was going to be beautiful, impressive, and functional!
And without doubt, the grandest building in all of Hope Valley!
Twelve new citizens would also bring a lot of business to the small town.
In Montreal, an old Office Building close to Millicent's Office, which also faced the Park, was in the process of being purchased to be remodeled as their city base location!
The Chief Inspector was to meet with Architects there when he arrived in Montreal to let his preferences be known.
Nathan couldn't wait to tell his Fiancee, as he knew she would be as thrilled as he was with the news.
At least, they would be in close proximity while working, and could often have lunch together, a fact Nathan was most grateful for.
Everything was lining up for their new life together!
Tonight, he was almost fully ready, dressed in his complete new Dress Uniform for the very first time.
But as he looked in the mirror, he hesitated.
Something was missing.
And Bill was right.
He did look tired and even worn.
The truth was he had lost his enthusiasm for the whole event.
"I need you Mil! I didn't realize how much, but I do. This is a night of firsts, and I'll admit nothing seems right because you're not here by my side. But I know you are in spirit, as I'm with you, my Love!"
He fingered the row of Millicent's diamonds he kept with him at all times, and slipped them into his Dress Pocket where they fell in a puddle of love there at the base of his own heart!
He smiled, although wanly.
He hadn't expected this intense longing for her.
He needed to focus; this was his job!
"Now, I'm ready! Let's get this over with..."
The Ballroom was a magical, mystical, and mythical Winter Wonderland, both frosty and dreamlike in theme and in presence, located in the most elegant and gargantuan White Marble Ballroom in all of Union City!
A virtual Palace of Ice stood before them in the far end with massive Crystal Chandeliers hanging everywhere overhead, too numerous to count, sparkling and dancing with overwhelming intensity, casting a dreamy, ethereal light over the entire space. Assorted White Candles were magically lit throughout literally bringing a slight warmth to the cold outdoors brought inside.
Large glittery White Balloons, interspersed with Silver ones of every size, covered the Ceiling from one end to the other, hiding their surprise of silver metallic glitter that was sure to fall while making its debut at the most opportune and romantic time for all the couples tonight!
The White Marble Slabs of flooring glistened to elegant perfection so much so that one could see their own reflection in the Cold Icy White!
Not to mention the gigantic Silver-encrusted Baroque Rococo mirrors that dotted the walls, allowing for the mirrored creation of eerie, dancing movements from the faux Silver and Crystal Ice Pieces hanging from the many Towering Trees painted a glittery White and placed throughout the massive space. All brought to life by dangling pieces of Irridescent Mirrors hanging everywhere.
The first initial glimpse literally took your breath away! And although the room was more than warm enough, its appearance gave off a feeling of true winter cold, creating a need to embrace your partner even tighter than usual, with the candles reminding you of an outdoor fire.
Snow blanketed mounds appeared lining the edges of the immense Ballroom.
The larger mounds held Exquisite White Antique Sleighs which were scattered around in the most unpredictable places, expertly positioned where professional photographers would be taking loving photos of couples throughout the night.
Red Poinsettias, serving as the only splash of color along with the Red Dress Uniforms, filled the massive room in magnificent displays deposited together in the same huge White Stone Urns as the trees had been placed in, only on a much smaller scale.
As was the tradition, a canvas portrait of every member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Force dressed in their Dress Uniforms was hung around the room with their brilliant red Serge matching that of the Poinsettias perfectly!
Nathan had also seen that one was done of Jack Thornton, so Elizabeth would have it to take with her at the end of the Ball.
Never had the decor of a Mountie Ball been so beautiful nor had it impacted Nathan so forcefully.
He was in love, causing a pang to hit his heart because the place was truly perfect and so very romantic.
Only the brilliance of Millicent was missing!
But no matter how much he wanted to share all this with her, he couldn't.
For him, this was just a working night. The Magic being there only for other couples to enjoy. He was simply on duty.
Escorting the wife of the Commissioner.
A full orchestra, dressed all in white tuxedoes and white gowns was warming up in the very center of the Ballroom, with only their dark woods and shiny silvery metal instruments resonating into the most marvelous sounds of music resounding throughout the fantasy space.
There would be dancing, laughter, and merriment, even romance, tonight.
But not for Nathan except, of course, for the perfunctory dancing that was required of him with the Commissioner's wife.
For there would be no Millicent tonight, and his heart was breaking...
"Nathan, I'm so sorry you and your Fiancee aren't able to enjoy this together," mused Commissioner Anderson, emphatically.
"I appreciate that, Sir!"
"I do however appreciate you taking care of Caroline. I promised her the first dance together, and regrettably, I'll then hand her over to your capable hands, and even more capable feet. I'm afraid this old dog will never be the dancer she craves and so deserves! Will you open the Ball with me?"
"It would be my honor, Sir!"
As they were speaking, the Ballroom was filling up in a sea of Red Dress Uniforms, and varied beautiful Ballgowns, mostly in White per happenstance, as no specific dress color, in particular, had been requested for the Ladies.
A Receiving Line was formed led by the Commissioner and his Wife, followed by Nathan, then the remaining Senior Officers and their wives.
Yes, this was his job, and like every job, Nathan was determined to do it well, whether comfortable or not.
He couldn't shake that inward abominable feeling of loss, and at a time when he was about to gain everything he had ever dreamed about.
'What is wrong with me?'
He plastered on a formal smile, as he greeted each and every Mountie and their dates coming through.
Each couple making him miss his Millicent all the more.
"Welcome! Elizabeth, you look lovely tonight! Charles, so glad you both could make it!"
And she did look wonderful wearing a white empire gown with a myriad of crystals covering the bodice. She draped a long throw over one shoulder and wore her antique Diamond Earrings, along with a very large Diamond Necklace.
"Thank you for making this possible, Nathan! I've never seen anything like this. It's perfectly magical! And I'll never forget this night!"
"Elizabeth, Jack's Portrait in on the East Wall, for you to take home with you at tonight's end. I hope you are pleased with it. I had it taken from his last professional portrait series."
"I don't know what to say. I never imagined. Thank you isn't enough," and Elizabeth hugged him, looking like she was about to cry.
"Thank you, Nathan, this is beyond our wildest dreams. I can't tell you how much we appreciate you making this happen for us!"
"It was my pleasure! Just enjoy! That's more than enough thanks!"
Finally, and not a moment too soon, the Commissioner motioned for Nathan to follow him to the Platform.
As soon as the two tall men in their Dress Uniforms stood imposingly in the center of the podium, the Commissioner nodded to Nathan, then took the lectern, with Nathan standing off to his right-hand side. Without saying a word, there was instant silence coupled with reverent attention from the audience.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, I have asked our new Chief Inspector to assist me in the opening of our Annual Mountie Ball! Tonight, as you can see, our theme is Winter Wonderland, and we are standing truly in the middle of that. How extraordinary! It is with great pleasure we both welcome you tonight! Relax and enjoy, this is your night. A night honoring you, the great men who make up this remarkable force that keeps our Country safe. Chief Inspector Grant, I defer to you."
The two men changed positions, and Nathan spoke confidently and resolutely into the microphone.
"May the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Ball of the year nineteen hundred and nineteen begin! Enjoy this night in honor of each of you and all of our fallen Brothers who have gone before us!"
"Hear! Hear!" followed by a thunderous round of applause.
Charles and Elizabeth watched as a Nathan they had never seen before so commandingly and elegantly followed the Commissioner down the steps, with Elizabeth wiping an eye, knowing Nathan had made a reference to her Jack.
The Commissioner then took his wife's hand and led her somewhat clumsily in the opening dance of the evening.
But to Nathan watching on, one wouldn't have known there was any clumsiness at all, judging by the look of love on Mrs. Anderson's face.
It was crystal clear for all to see.
This was the man she adored and had stood faithfully by for so many years, had born him children, had moved wherever was needed, and made a home in spite of their military surroundings.
She was to be admired equally as much as him.
For she had given every bit as much, possibly more!
In so many ways, she had made this great man into what he was to all these Mounties surrounding him.
They looked up to him, followed him unquestionably, and even revered him.
But it was Caroline who softened him and was responsible in large part for his caring fatherly attitude.
Someday, Nathan hoped to be, not famous like him. Not even necessarily the Commissioner, as he had never aspired to that. But he did desire above all else, a happy marriage with both Millicent and him content in themselves and each other, no matter what that looked like.
He would do everything in his power to make it so, for his coming marriage was the most important thing in the world to him.
It would be all the happiness he would ever desire if he could only make Millicent as happy as this older woman so thrilled to be dancing with her husband of so many years, whom she was still very much in love with.
That was success in Nathan's eyes.
It wasn't the career, although he always did what needed to be done to the best of his ability, it was the relationship.
The most important relationship, outside of his relationship with God.
God had given him Millicent, and the deep, intimate relationship they already had, that would only grow with marriage.
And despite veering off course once, he had only ever seen his life with Millicent.
She was and would be the most important earthly relationship he would ever have.
The music changed, and with a formal nod to his Commissioner, Nathan reached for Mrs. Anderson's hand, sweeping her away in the next waltz, while doing his best to bury his thoughts in the swelling music...
Gliding across the Dance Floor, suddenly Mrs. Anderson spoke.
"The night is quite beautiful, Nathan. I can't tell you how much this old Lady appreciates your care! My poor husband tries, but dancing is not at all his forte!"
"Well, you're not at all an old Lady, but someone I deeply admire, Mrs. Anderson. And you're looking very lovely tonight!"
"That crooked smile of yours almost makes me believe you, Chief Inspector!"
"It's all true! I only hope Millicent and I have such a rock-solid marriage when we're your age."
"You will!"
"How do you know that?" he asked curiously.
"You care for each other deeply. I saw it so clearly in those Engagement photos. Each and every single one," she chuckled. "That never goes away! Not if you don't lose it, that is!"
"And what's the secret to not losing it?"
"The secret is to always truly listen to what your partner is saying, as well as to what she or he is not saying, but thinking," she smiled brilliantly. "You simply must be clairvoyant!"
And then she chuckled.
"Oh, that simple, is it?" he chuckled too.
"It truly is! There will be many times as you get to know each other more intimately, that you both will be tempted to hold back. Don't. Don't you hold back, and don't allow her to hold back! That's my best advice! Lay it all out in the open, good and bad, pretty and ugly. You are now a team of two. Function independently, but also function as one together. You'll never go wrong!"
"Very sage advice, I do believe. Thank you for that, Mrs. Anderson."
As Nathan turned her with his back against the doorway, Caroline gasped.
"Nathan, your Fiancee is more beautiful in person than in her photos, and I must say in her photos she is ravishing. But..."
"That she is. She's a real stunner, Ma'am. I don't even exist when she enters the room. Quite frankly, no one else does."
"Nathan, she has love for you written all over her beautiful face."
"Yes, I could see it in the pictures too! And I see it every single time she looks at me. I'll never tire of watching her beautiful face. Each time I see her, it's like seeing her for the first time all over again!"
"Nathan, turn me around. I need you terribly, but there is someone who needs you so very much more!"
Puzzled Nathan questioned her.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Anderson, what are you suggesting?"
"It's an order, Chief Inspector! Turn me around!" she insisted firmly.
Although not a proper dance step in this particular sequence at all, Nathan did as his Commissioner's wife ordered and turned his partner around.
As he slowly looked up, he stopped dead in his tracks, in total shock, as an inner calmness and outer excitement overtook him, causing all those jagged feelings of the past few days to disappear.
Nathan Grant was whole again in that instant.
For there in the Main Entrance to the Ballroom stood the woman he loved.
Millicent stood there almost timidly, but with the presence of unmistakable grace, smiling brilliantly.
She was without a doubt, the most beautifully breathtaking woman he and others had ever seen, as evidenced by the collective gasp of awe that ensued.
Resplendent with silky blonde tresses pulled back into a low elegant French Chignon and with eyes the deepest Emerald color of the Seas, both luminous and full of love!
And those large eyes were scanning the huge Ballroom, Nathan knew at once searching only for him.
She was dressed regally in a deep red Ballgown that matched his Serge perfectly, but it was only at a closer glance past its initial blinding beauty that the very fitted, low-bodiced gown could be seen to be composed of alternating panels of Satin and Velvet, with one pair of Satin bands as partial sleeves, paired with another pair of Velvet bands corresponding to each shoulder as the rest of pseudo 'sleeves.'
Her voluminous skirt was full and heavy with the Velvet of the bodice dripping into beribboned bands that fell at alternating lengths of the Satin skirt, ending in Velvet Bows staggered around the perimeter.
The skirt fell into a slight train behind that he knew would sweep the floor as he glided across the floor with her in his arms.
Was this real?
Was this regal creature real, or just a figment of his imagination because he so desperately wanted her to be there, needed her to be here?
'No, wait, Mrs. Anderson had seen her too!'
'Millicent is here!' but the words wouldn't come out.
Mrs. Anderson attempted to push him slightly, as Bill came up to remove her hand from Nathan's now limp one.
"I've got it from here, Son. Go!" declared Bill with a not-so-subtle, firmer push. "Go now!"
'Nathan Grant, if you don't go kiss my Best Friend and your Soulmate right now, I'm never speaking to you again. And neither is she! Got that, Brother? And you'd better love her well, or I'll haunt you till the end of time! And no more grief! Enough is enough! My little girl needs a family and happiness. And so do you! You've always been right there in Mil's heart, just as she's been in yours since we were ten years old. Now, go!'
He could feel Bill's push and Colleen's smile above him, over her veiled threat, as he released all past grief and tension, fully welcoming the happiness, the joy, the wonder that now awaited him.
Nathan nodded to Colleen, who smiled back brilliantly, as she blew her beloved brother a kiss.
'I'm not going anywhere, I'm right here in both your hearts and will always be. Thank you, dearest Brother and Twin, for all you've done!'
The last two pushes were just what a shock-filled Nathan needed in order to spur him into action, starting slow, but moving faster and faster as he got his bearings.
From that moment of seeing Millicent standing there, even with the shock coursing through his body, Nathan Grant knew his life was changed forever, in a most miraculous and positive way.
His wide strides widened further, quickening as he was drawn to the woman he loved above all else, in a visceral way he had never experienced before, with her ebullient smile for him alone, drawing him.
A hush came over the Ballroom, as all eyes were glued to the Couple, but Nathan and Millicent didn't even notice.
By the time he reached her, both had tears in their eyes, and he lifted her high inside the doorway and swung her around and around jubilantly, Ballgown and all with her skirt flowing out around them.
Her refined slender hands landed on his strong shoulders as his large rugged hands encircled her tiny waist, for the entire gathering to see!
But what no one missed was the love on their faces.
Till finally he set her down and kicked the doors closed behind him with the heel of his dress boots, as his lips came crashing down to hers in a need for her that was so intense it was overwhelming.
His strong arms were still around her holding her closer, making them one after such a long time apart.
Even though not privy to their kiss, although assumed, an eruption of vigorous clapping from inside the ballroom increased in crescendo, but again, wasn't even heard by the young couple.
Only he existed for her and only she existed for him but at this particular moment, that was more accurately interpreted as tangled lips and limbs.
No one else was even there and it wouldn't have mattered had they been!
With hearts beating out of their chests, their kiss deepened as tears streamed down both their faces.
They didn't even notice the salty water freely intermingling one with the other's as the resultant stream fell to their lips.
His subconscious instantly noticed she had indeed lost weight. As she felt even smaller in his arms. But if possible, she was even more beautiful.
"You came," his words were muffled by their still entwined lips. "I needed you so desperately and you came!"
"Nothing in this world is more important than you and Allie, my darling Nate! Nothing. I worked hard and did the best job I could for everyone concerned, but now this is our time! Yours, mine, and Allie's time from now on till our Wedding. Couple time and family time. The Wedding is now completely in our Mothers' capable hands. We are together again, right where we belong!"
Holding her head in his hands, he smothered her exquisite face with kisses, and she did the same across his handsome and freshly shaven face.
"I'm so sorry the Train was late."
"No 'sorrys'! You're here now. This is perfect!"
They couldn't stop kissing, and they couldn't let each other go.
Both were leaning on the other trying to remain upright, till finally Nathan swooped her up and carried her to a settee that he could barely recognize in his peripheral vision, where he held her tightly beside him there, unable to let her go.
"You look absolutely ravishing! So very beautiful doesn't even begin to describe you! There are no words, my darling Millicent! None."
"I've never seen you look more handsome, Nathan Grant! What an extraordinary Dress Uniform! I had to be here with you tonight, Love! I had to be here tomorrow, too for Allie's first dance!"
He took her hand and lowered his lips to it.
"You will never ever know how very much I needed you right at this very moment! Nor how much this means to me."
She couldn't help the pained look of love while smoothing his wayward lock of hair.
"I do know my Darling! Don't you know? I could barely breathe without you. I needed you every bit as much..."
After escorting her to the Lady's Room, which Tom had ensured was clear, and parting long enough for Millicent to quickly retire there long enough for make-up repair, Nathan wiped his own face free of lipstick, then turned to Tom and Matt, who had been discreetly guarding them.
"I can't thank you enough for bringing her here to me, for protecting her, and keeping her safe. Thank you, both, from the bottom of my heart! I don't know what happened to me, but I felt I couldn't make it through another day without her! Thank you," and their handshakes turned into masculine embraces instead.
"Our honor, Chief!" smiled Tom with a salute.
"She's missed you terribly, Sir!" agreed Matt. "We're glad to be back!"
Truth be told, the men seemed thrilled to be getting their Couple back together again, as was their Couple!
"You two belong together," assured Tom with a pat on Nathan's back. "This is the way it should be! We're just happy to play a small part!"
As Millicent entered the entry hall again, Nathan was instantly by her side.
He gathered her to him and looked down lovingly, even giddily at this exquisite woman now on his arm.
"I adore you, Millicent Alexandria Bradford!"
He bent to kiss her forehead, doing his best to stop any additional tears from either to fall, gently wiping her cheeks, as she reached to wipe his own.
He was truly overcome but had to pull himself together for her, and for his Commissioner.
He was on duty, although it did appear he had been somewhat relieved. Perhaps this was to be a night of romance for Nathan Grant after all!
"Are you ready to make our entrance, Darling?" asked Nathan.
She patted his arm with her own looped through his.
"With you by my side, I'm ready for anything! And always will be, my Love!"
"Wait! I believe this belongs to you," and Nathan reached into the pocket over his heart and took the diamond bracelet he was used to her always wearing, and clasped it securely around her left wrist.
"This may have saved me, Mil!"
From that slight touch, an electrical charge so fierce traversed through both of their bodies.
And all she could do was allow a lovely sigh to escape her lips, her heart full of love for this handsome man with the most giving and loving heart.
"One last kiss for our beautiful future together, filled with all our dreams!" winked Nathan, wanting only to be with her, instead of the crowd of people, but knowing they had to join everyone.
Their resultant kiss promised all that and more.
Their lives together were once again the focus. And all was right in their world again!
They were together, and now always would be.
The double door opened to thunderous applause, and as Nathan proudly led Millicent to the very front of the Ballroom, the applause continued.
First, the Commissioner and Mrs. Anderson moved to meet her, both taking her into their welcoming arms, leaving Nathan distraught at having to let go of her.
"You're everything your photos proved you to be and more. You are beyond stunning, my Dear!" exclaimed the Commissioner. "Simply breathtaking!"
"Lovelier than I could have ever imagined, Dear Child! I honestly don't believe I've ever seen anyone who could hold a candle to you, my darling Millicent! And I can tell you're just as beautiful inside where it counts. We are going to be great friends, my Dear! The Commissioner and I both know you have captured the most honorable Mountie in all our Regiments! To say nothing of our most handsome!" she added with glee.
"I must agree on all that, Ma'am!" smiled Millicent warmly. "My Nathan is all that and so much more!"
Her Emerald eyes were full of the most fervent love directed at one Chief Inspector, but his own deep blue eyes, also the color of Oceans, held an equal match of love returned to her.
His heart was simply full and overflowing with love for her, and he was so proud to finally get to introduce her personally to the people who were so important to him.
In moments, Bill slipped up from behind and hugged his precious Millicent.
"I know, I don't count nearly as much, but come here! I've missed my Barrister too!"
Millicent embraced him and gave him her full attention.
"You count very, very much! Thank you for taking care of Nathan, Bill, and also my Allie! I'm forever grateful!"
Had there been a King and Queen crowned for the Ball, this couple would have unanimously been it, without question.
Nathan Grant looked like a handsome, rugged Prince, while Millicent Bradford was every inch his beautiful blonde Princess.
Not even the real people holding those royal titles across the world could compare, and everyone knew it, except, of course, the Couple themselves!
But a radiant love emanated from both Nathan and Millicent, warming the cold, icy-looking area around them into something passionate.
Their love was palpable, a living thing that could be felt by all.
As the Prince led his Princess to the dance floor, they matched perfectly.
He in his Dress Serge, she in her brilliant Red ballgown, with strands of Velvet ribbon down the long skirt and train peppered with little Red bows. He noticed the simple oval Diamond earrings hanging from her ears, which, unknown to her would soon be replaced by Emerald and Diamond ones perfectly matching her Emerald Engagement Ring. She had access to unimaginable jewels, yet she preferred to keep things simple, with her earrings, her engagement ring, and now the tiny strand of diamonds around her wrist again, a gift from her Auntie Luciana she always wore.
The new Bridal jewelry wasn't necessary, and he knew it, especially not to her, but this Chief Inspector had not at all forgotten his responsibilities as a Groom. He would take his own money to see that his new wife was gifted with appropriate Wedding Jewelry. Because it was a symbol of their love.
And it was important to him.
Besides, what man wouldn't have gifted her with all he had?
She deserved only the very best.
Suddenly the orchestra was playing Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 1 in G minor known as "Winter Dreams." It was a quintessential winter piece fitting perfectly with the Winter Wonderland Theme of the Night, as the crowd joyfully joined in the dancing. (*69)
As Nathan led Millicent to the Dance Floor, it was soon clear to all, that this couple was exquisitely trained in dance.
Few knew it was a testament to the talents of Nathan's own mother!
But beyond skill, they were simply magic together. Sophia would have been so proud! In more ways than one.
As "Winter Dreams" finally ended, the orchestra quickly transitioned from G minor to D major by going from G minor directly to D, since D7 is the dominant 7th of G minor. The members simply first hung onto the D major with no 7th for a while, then played A7 to set up the resolution back to D major. Nathan recognized the chords he was so familiar with from playing his guitar, but even he wondered where they were going!
It was a rather simple technique used to move to the dominant chord and one that is actually used quite often in Baroque and Classical music.
The transition did catch the dancers off guard, leaving them mysteriously waiting for what was coming, in a way that was remarkably and beautifully poignant.
But when Nathan realized they had transitioned to play the Christmas Carol, The First Noel, he knew it to be Millicent's favorite and elegantly took her hand and kissed it to let her know they would still be dancing. (*70)
Likewise, when Millicent heard the notes and recognized her favorite Carol, a beautiful smile crossed her face. Only Nathan could tell she was tired, but she still wanted to dance with the man she loved, so she fell into her Fiance's arms as he kissed her forehead once more, then rested his chin on the top of her head as she nestled into him, and they danced closely and slowly with each other, as those around them fell to the sides.
Suddenly nothing in the room existed but this beautiful couple dancing, gliding so elegantly across the floor, as a spotlight centered around them.
But again, our couple didn't even notice, off in their own dreamy world of perfect love.
A group of Singers began singing the lyrics to the music being played as first, Ballroom, then Latin, and last, Old Tyme tempos as the rhythms took over, with Nathan happily and fluidly leading and transitioning a sleepy Millicent from one to the next!
Noel, Noel
Noel, Noel
The First Noel, the Angels did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep
On a cold winter's night that was so deep
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!
Noel, Noel
Noel, Noel
They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the East beyond them far
And to the earth it gave great light
And so it continued both day and night
Noel, Noel
