Ch 3 A Girl Named Robyn
"Mebh, you bit her," Feza said, dropping her ears a bit. "I didn't mean to, Feza. The townie kept hitting me. I meant to only bite the rope," Mebh sighed, entering the den.
Mebh heard rustling behind them, figuring out that they were being followed. "She's following us," Mebh said, dropping her ears. Feza looks behind her, right front paw and ears raised up.
"Get back to the den. I'm right behind you," Feza said, turning and running further in the forest.
Mebh quickly followed the older wolfwalker.
They entered the den, where the pack was waiting along with their sleeping human bodies, which were sitting in Móll's sleeping body, which was still perched on a seat made out of a log.
"Come out. I know you two are there," the girl spoke, entering the den, crossbow drawn. The two wolfwalkers jump up, become a gold color before entering their human bodies.
The two wake up from their nap, their wolf souls jumping in their human bodies. The girl was in shock by what they saw. "Wait, y-you two… are…" she stuttered.
"Wolfwalkers. You oughta thank me, townie," Mebh said with a sheepish grin. "Mebh, you bit her arm," Feza sighed, rubbing her eyes.
"She kicked me in the gob a lot," Mebh said, rubbing her eyes. "She attacked me!" The girl shouted in disbelief. Feza walked up to the human girl and said, a but annoyed, "Look, she was trying to get you down. She had no intention to bite you. Besides, you're in our woods. You shouldn't even be here. No place for a townie,"
The girl took a step back. "Your woods? Your wolves are attacking the lumberjacks and the sheep," the girl spat angrily. She saw the bite mark the girl's arm, seeing it glow gold for a second.
"Tell me, townie. Are you feeling anything new? Or weird? Are you seeing visions?" Feza asked, taking her arm. "What?! No! What are you doing?!" The girl shouted, trying to pull her arm back.
"If you'd hold still, I'm gonna heal the bite my sister gave you," Feza said, her blue eye and feather glowing as she healed the girl's arm.
The girl inspected her arm in surprise, seeing nothing but a faint scar on her arm. "There, you're fixed now. Let's pretend this never happened. Off you go," Mebh said, waving her hands towards the entrance of the den.
"But you two healed, Merlyn," the girl says, the bird landing on her right shoulder. Feza rubbed the back of her neck and sighed out of frustration. "Look, you're welcome. Yes, we can do both, so you can leave now," she said, looking at the girl.
The girl notices Móll sitting asleep behind them. "Wait, who's that?" The girl asked. "She's our mammy. But you's better leave before our wolves eat ya!" Mebh said with a laugh.
"Mebh, no. Let's not bring our wolves into this," Feza groaned, looking at her sister. The girl looked at Mebh, seeing the wolves surrounding her.
The girl made a break for it, the pack and wolfwalkers following her. Mebh jumped on the leader wolf's back while Feza jumped on the leader behind her.
They chased the girl through the forest playfully as the girl ran in fear. Mebh started going through the girl's hunting gear. "Why do you carry around so much stuff, townie?" Mebh asked.
"Stop, it's my hunting gear!" The girl shouted, pulling her bag out of Mebh's hands. "But you're just a kid, a hunter?" Feza asked, looking around Mebh.
"But you're girls too," the girl said, still running ahead. Mebh stood on the lead wolf's back and cried out, "We're no girls. We're wolfwalkers! When we sleeps, we're wolves! When we're awake, we're us, Mebh Óg MacTire!" Mebh exclaimed, fist bumping the air.
"And Feza Hawking. I can heal any injury, thanks to my wolf powers and my feather. What's your name?" Feza asked. The wolves stop and let the wolfwalkers off their backs.
"Robyn," she says. "Well then, townie, nice to meet ya," Mebh said. Feza gave her a smile. "Stop calling me that," Robyn said in an irritated way.
"Ah, it's no problem. You oughta go back home," Feza said, but was interrupted by a sound of rustling outside of the forest. Feza perked up, standing on all fours, raising her left arm.
"There's somebody here," she growled, taking off towards the forest entrance. "A man, let's get rid of him," Mebh said, following her sister.
Robyn gasped at this, eyes widening. "Man? Oh no. Father," she said, sprinting to the wolfwalkers. They gathered around the entrance, but they were well hidden.
The man was tall, had blonde hair and a beard, blue eyes like Robyn. This was Robyn's father, a hunter in Lord Protector's army. "It's just one townie. I'll give him a bit of a scare," Mebh said, but Robyn and Feza made sure they were hidden.
The man heard panting from the inside of the forests, so he took his crossbow out and walked to it. They all became quiet. But he tur1ned around and left the forest.
"That was close," Robyn said, walking out of the forest. Feza and Mebh walk out with the pack followed them. "Hey, hey! You heard what Móll said, we can't be out of the forest during the day! Back to the den! Go!" Feza commanded the wolves, who whimpered and did what Feza said.
"So that woman back there is both of your mum?" Robyn asked. "She's Mebh's mother. I was adopted into the pack after both of my parents died when I was two years old. But Mebh's mother is my mother too. Mebh is my sister," Feza answered.
Robyn looked at the feather on Feza's ear. "What's with the feather?" Robyn asked. "Oh, this? I…I was born with this," Feza said, touching the gold feather gently, rubbing it.
Robyn turned away quickly. "I'm sorry, but I'm not supposed to be here. I've got to get back," she said.
"Good, and don't ever come back to our forest. Last thing we want is for those townies to find our pack. Well, get you back to that town," Feza replied, starting to push her by her back.
"Wait, I need my crossbow," Robyn said, stepping forward and turning around. "Why? So you can shoot yer bird down again?" Mebh asked, hands on her hips, and leaning over a little.
"No, it's for… Oh, nevermind," Robyn said, looking ahead. Feza was about to ask what she meant by that but Mebh started sniffing the air. "Feza, we got ourselves more tasty townies!" She said, running after the scent.
Feza sniffed the air, catching the scent. She quickly followed Mebh with Robyn behind them. The scent led them to a cart with two men sitting in front of it.
Robyn looked like she was reaching out from under the cart, shocking Feza. "Robyn? What're you doing?" She whispered loudly.
"Those tasties are ours," Mebh grumbled, pushing her sister down by pressing her hand on her head. She was eyeing the bread that was sitting on the cart.
"Im not after that. I'm getting my crossbow," Robyn said, reaching for the crossbow. "Oh, alright, but those tasties are ours," Mebh said, snatching some food before the trio quickly sneak away from the cart.
They make to the forest before stopping. "That was a close one," Mebh said, eating the bread she 9got. "But we didn't get caught, Mebh. We're much more stealthily. Being in that town creeps me out. Too many townies for my liking," Feza said, taking a bite of an apple.
"And smelly, too," Mebh replied with a giggle. Robyn looked back where they came from, in the direction of the town.
"I don't like being stuck there. I miss England," Robyn sighed, rubbing her arm. "What's an England?" Mebh asked confused.
"I used to to live there. I could go wherever I wanted. I could play with my friends, it was a good time," Robyn said. "That sounds amazing," Feza says with a smile.
"Yeah, Merlyn and I even helped my father hunt all the time, now I'm being forced to stay in town all the time," Robyn sighed. "Well, why don't you stay with us in the forest?" Mebh asked with enthusiasm.
"She's right, Robyn. You can do whatever you want here," Feza said, twirling around once. "But I can't leave my father. He works for Lord Protector and… you guys can't stay in the forest. They're cutting it all down," Robyn said.
"You serious?" Feza said with a soft gasp. "No way! We'll fight them off," Mebh said in a growl. "But he wants the wolves gone! Dead. You gotta leave this place," Robyn warned.
Mebh walked over to her sister and took her hand. "We were going, all of us," Mebh said. "What's stopping you guys?" Robyn asked with a shoulder shrug. "We'll, our mother left in her wolf form," Feza said.
"She went to find us a new place to live. It's probably a huge den with no stinker townies and plenty of food! I tell ya, it's gonna be amazing!" Mebh exclaimed, jumping up and down.
"Where do you think she could be? Maybe she got lost or even captured," Robyn said. "Nobody can catch my mammy. We'll get our wolves to eat those townies if she was," Mebh said in determination.
"They're not gonna find the den either," Feza said, crossing her arms. "But I did," Robyn said. "Only because we let ya," Mebh laughed.
Robyn smiled at the wolfwalkers. "I got to tell my father about you two. We didn't know wolfwalkers are real. Look, I'll help the two of you. Wait for me by the big tree. I'll bring you guys some bread," Robyn said with a smile.
"Don't you mean town tasties?" Feza joked, elbowing Robyn in the ribs. "Yeah," Robyn laughed.
"Smell ya later townie," Mebh said. "Not if I smell ya first," Robyn replied. "See ya Robyn," Feza says, turning around and sprinting back to the forest with Mebh.
