As soon as Beau frantically got done checking over a terrified Emily, he turned to Avery and glared at the man. "I understand you're pissed —," Avery began.
He didn't even get to finish the sentence because Beau handed his badge over to Jenny and then whirled straight around to punch him. Carla didn't even protest. "Now I'm satisfied. If you ever put my daughter in danger again, it'll be the last thing you do," he threatened. He stared the man down, wanting Avery to know he was serious. Nobody should have ever put Emily in a situation like this and he hoped it never happened again.
"I didn't hear a thing," chimed in Jenny.
Emily unwound herself from her terrified mother and hugged Beau. "I love you, Dad."
"I love you too, Em. You sure you're okay? You're not hurt?" he triple checked.
Under any other circumstances, Emily would have rolled her eyes but she was still too ramped up from the camping trip from hell. She couldn't stop shaking either. "I'm fine, Daddy. Just coming down from the adrenaline rush." This last night had gone terribly wrong in so many ways, and she was pretty sure she'd be traumatized for life as a result.
"I think we need to get out of here - I never want to see the woods again, especially these ones." Carla sighed, sending a glare towards her husband.
"What am I going to have to do to make up for this?" Avery questioned.
She laughed. "Oh, don't even talk to me. I can't even look at you right now. Let's get the hell out of here."
The group left, Beau continuing to fuss over Emily until they got to his camper. "I'm starving," she murmured, rushing to his fridge to rummage through it.
"Doesn't seem to have ruined her appetite at least," Jenny comforted.
Beau couldn't take his eyes off his daughter, now scarfing down some food. He smirked. "Hoyt, she is my daughter. Of course she inherited my appetite."
"Are you always like this, Arlen?"
"Maybe. What are you going to do about it?" Beau shot back.
"Perhaps you two could refrain from flirting right in front of me," chimed in Carla, crossing her arms and glaring daggers at them.
"You and your husband are right here, Carla!"
"Shut the fuck up and let me eat in peace," Emily ordered.
"Language!" her parents - and Jenny - shouted at once.
"Free pass since I nearly died several times on this trip." Emily smirked at them and then headed into Beau's bathroom for a shower.
"She's got us there," Beau admitted.
It would take Emily some time to recover from this fiasco, if ever, but she planned to deal with the trauma later with both her parents' help. Beau didn't want to leave her out of his sight for the time being, even though he knew that was irrational, but he refused to do wrong by his daughter. And fortunately, he didn't have to shoulder this burden alone since Jenny, Cassie, and Denise planned to support them in any way they possibly could.
